Sunday Homily for July 15, 2018, 15th Ordinary Time, B cycle

Says Our Dearest Tori, "Welcome, Everybody."

Readings:

Amos 7, 12-15,  The Lord said to me,”Go, prophesy.”

Psalm 85,   Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.

Ephesians 1, 3-14, In love he destined us for adoption to himself.

Mark 6, 7-13, Jesus sent them out two by two.

  Welcome

They are back, Folks, Shonda & Ben.  So good to have you both with us like usual.  Thanks, David, for carrying the load often.

Amos  observations:

Author: Amos or his scribe.  He was a shepherd of sheep & tended sycamore trees.  One of the 12 minor prophets of the OT, minor because of smallness of the works.  Amos has only 9 chapters.  Usual pattern of prophets: 1. predictions of dire times for evil behavior; 2. predictions of better times in the future.

Date: Ca. 777 (a memory help), after the kingships of David & Solomon, time of King Jeroboam of the northern kingdom, called Israel vs the southern kingdom, called Judah (where Jerusalem is).   The northern half of the state is still undefeated.

IMG_3114

Time for thanks to our God.

Geography: Note the two kingdoms, Judah in the south, Israel in the north.  Amos tended sheep in a little town called Tekoa, 10 miles south of Jerusalem, in Judah, the south.  He is sent by Yahweh to Bethel, a small but important town in the northern kingdom, 10 miles north of Jerusalem, to warn the people of Israel & their king Jeroboam that Yahweh was mad at them.  The wicked high priest of Bethel, Amaziah condemns Amos for his interference.

  The Gang

Who let all these crazy people in??

The Setting: a time of prosperity.  But Yahweh is mad at the greed of the wealthy and their oppression of the poor (which ties into our gospel talking about walking lightly through life).  We know the people of this kingdom of Israel are headed for annihilation by the Assyrian nation.  And they will disappear as a significant body.

Our Selection, chapter 7:  Amos describes three visions or dreams he has had.  Amaziah, the priest, gives it to him for spreading these visions around.  Then, Amos responds and socks it to Amaziah with a hammer.

Take Nothing for the Journey

I apologize this morning for telling you a story that some of you will probably remember.  However, the event so speaks to the gospel this morning that I can not pass it up.  Another African story.

One evening in Tanzania I boarded an overnight train in Dar es Salaam, the capital.  I would get off the next morning in the region near Kilimajaro where there was a Jesuit house that I used as a base when I was not on the road giving seminars or retreats.

IMG_3892

Thanks for bringing up our gifts, Kevin, Connie, & John.

I had bought my ticket just the afternoon of the trip.  No compartments were available, which were not much anyway.  Two shared the compartment and an upper bunk came down.  You had to be careful in the little stations, because thieves would look in the window and grab.  So, no big loss.

I had to take general booking.  This entitled me to a place on the train, not necessarily a seat.  It is not air conditioned and can be a bit warm.

I started out sitting on a suitcase I traveled with.  There were mothers with little kids and a few chickens all around my area at the end of one train car.   I expected it would be a long night, but I would get where I wanted to go and then sleep extra.

IMG_3860

Cody & Ben, you are having too much fun.

About midnight the train stopped, like in the middle of nowhere.  We sit there.  No explanation, nothing.   I finally join others getting off.  I lie down on the rocks on the edge of the track, my case under my head so no one would snatch it, and wait.  And wait.  We sit there with no explanation until about 7:00 the next evening.

Just like Mark recommends in the gospel today, I had boarded that train with nothing to drink or eat.  Looking back, I cannot believe I was so stupid.  Normally I would never have set out without water.

Commumion 1

 Communion for Bill.

Why did I not ask the Tanzanian ladies for a drink?  I could easily talk Swahili with them.  Trouble was, they did not often purify their water and I was afraid of it.   So there I sat, now in the shade.  I look around.  Everyone on that train is Tanzanian.  I am the only white guy, which I am at home with.

Suddenly I see up the track maybe 4 or 5 cars ahead of me a white couple.  They must have extra water.  Hooray.  They are Germans, but speak English with no problem.

We hang out.  They saved me, and let me tell you a quickie about how I saved them.

Communion 2

Communion for Dee & Ray.

We were  seated in the shade of a Frangipani tree I can still clearly remember.  All the passengers were seated along the train in the shade.  Next to us was a momma with her baby.  At one point the momma gets up and goes into the train leaving her baby in the shade on a small blanket.

The German guy who was about 6, 4 gets up and takes a picture of the baby.  Bad move.  Someone on the train sees him, tells the momma, she tells her husband, and he comes out yelling with a bunch of people.  He wants the camera.  He wants to take the German to the police, wherever that might be.

  IMG_3871

Welcome back, Sophie, so nice to see you with us.

So, I stepped in.  We all sat down under the trees and I talked.   I finally got the father to allow the German to go to his compartment, cut off the baby’s picture, and give it to the man.

He cuts off  the end of the film, brings it back, and gives it to the man.  It is black, of course, and the man is angry again.

I explain how all the film is black until it is developed.  The crisis comes to an end.

  IMG_3859

So good to see you, too, Dear Leo.

I ended up climbing Kilimanjaro with the couple, which ended up being amusing.  He was an Alpine Mountain rescue expert, like a 4 on a 5 scale.  He could crawl across your ceiling holding on with his fingernails.  When we got to the top of Kilimanjaro he got altitude sickness and I carried his back pack.  Of course, I teased him mercilessly.

I never saw them again, although they were begging me to come to Germany on one of my homeward trips.  I wanted to see the Berlin wall and never did.  She was East German, he West.

IMG_3878

Hang in there, Buddy, we are almost up to Cupcake Time.

The story simply tries to show how literal reading of the Bible can get you into bad places.

What  would you suggest is a positive in this story about traveling with nothing? Could this be what Francis is emphasizing when he talks about Less is Better?  Consumerism?

How is Less Better for you?

    One Day on a Walker

For a New Appreciation of People, Try a Walker

This morning I would like to talk about how I came to see again how genuinely good ordinary people can be.  Want a quickie answer to that?  Try lumbar stenosis which leads to lower back pain which leads to life on a walker.

    Another Day on the walker.

    Two examples.

Just after the doctor put me on a walker I had an 8:00 A.M. appointment with my skin doctor.  It was freezing dark, cold, windy, and I had to park in one of those ground level parking areas, like about ½ a mile from the double glass entrance doors.

As I hobbled up to the doors, a guy and a woman jumped ahead of me and held the doors open for me.  I was most touched.

The same thing happened when I departed the buildings.

Other similar events happened all the time we were in Hilton Head.   But a special one took place at an Alabama highway welcome facility just departing Georgia.

We stopped in the visitor space to visit the facilities.  As I approached the one story building I noticed that the host of the facility this particular morning was a black guy about 60.  He saw me and was immediately heading toward the entrance doors.

Buddy reading the Blessing of The Advent Candle.

We arrived about the same moment and I reached out to pull outward the right hand door.  Trouble was, I was coming at it from the left.  I was awkwardly pulling the door with my right hand when the guy opened the door and stepped out to help me.

Lucky me, because I was planning on using the door handle with my right hand to balance.  Suddenly the door was open, the handle out of reach, and I am falling over—right into the arms of the welcoming station.  Yes, he caught me and graciously got me righted.

    IMG_4685

Yes, Harper, you look really pretty with your new shorter hair.

Then, even at the restroom door, truckers were holding it so I could enter and depart.

I have been most touched, folks, and feel privileged.

Any of you seen these people around lately?

And the question I would ask normally, I don’t ask now because it is irrelevant.  You do this kind of activity every day.

Thanksgiving History: Everyone knows about the first Thanksgiving in 1602 with the Pilgrims and the Indians eating together, the Mayflower, and Plymouth Rock.   Here are 5 facts that people do not hear about usually.

    1.  When did Thanksgiving begin?  Our ancestors have celebrated end of harvest feasts of gratitude for centuries.  Lincoln first focused on a national feast; FDR established the national holiday in 1941.

    IMG_4631

    Michelle with her dad, Gil.

    1.  The pilgrims did not know they were pilgrims.  They called themselves saints, and non-saints were called strangers.  The word pilgrim came along in the 18 hundreds, 2 centuries later.  They were not even Puritans, but separatists.  They split off from the Church of England, old Henry VIII's church, and the Puritans did not split off.
    2.   The Separatists did not come to establish religious freedom.  They came for religious freedom for their religion and only their religion.  Like the Catholic Church, the Separatists demanded everyone belong to their program.  Failure to conform could result in execution, ala inquisition.

    IMG_3018

And the Father will Dance, One of our most favorite hymns led by Ben.

    1.  The Mayflower returned to England, was torn apart, and its beams were used to build a barn in Buckinghamshire (just north of London & east of Oxford).
    2.  How did the Indians & Separatists communicate?   The Indians were Algonquians & one of them, Squanto had actually lived in Briton some years.  He returned to his tribe and taught his friend, Samoset English.  It was Samoset who communicated with the Separatists, & the Indians taught them to raise corn, to fish, and to hunt.  In the first winter half of the 100 Separatists died before the Indians taught them how to survive.

    Thanksgiving

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, my most favorite celebration, I would like to talk about blessings.  Excuse me for the personal focus.  It is my annual assessment.  Rosemary & I do this together more toward the end of the year, but initially I put together my own list.

As an aside, this Tuesday we celebrate the 26th anniversary of the 6 Jesuits killed in the patio of their residence of their university, UCA, University of Central America, El Salvador.

    Thanksgiving

Despite the fact that Rosemary says, when she hears that I want to give a Thanksgiving homily this Sunday, “Not another thanksgiving homily.”  I  promise her that  won’t repeat the Big 3 Blessings in my life.  Like entering the Jesuits, spending 10 years in East Africa, and marrying her.

Instead, I have Ragbrai.  The ride across Iowa in July.  You have heard me talk about this event on numerous occasions.  To me this is an extraordinary event, some 30 thousand riders, 400-500 miles from the Missouri River to the Mississippi.

I have my favorite vendor, the Mennonite community, serving home made pie slices and a big bowl of vanilla ice cream.  One flavor of ice cream, a dozen flavors of pie, which the are baking right there on the edge of the road. Like in October we took an ocean cruise in the North Atlantic, starting in Bergen, Switzerland, and continuing through Amsterdam and Portsmouth, England through the Straights of Gibraltar to Barcelona, Spain.

One of the most moving experiences was taking a bus from Bruge, Belgium to the First World War battle lines at Ypres.  This was to be the war to end all wars.

      IMG_0677

Away they go on a new journey in life.

Thirdly, and this is the best year after year.  This community, you people.  Like what community could you find who would welcome with open arms a crazy woman who wants to tell us about her ancestors who came over on the Mayflower.  Moreover, we loved the presentation, complete with singing and a costume change.

These are just three of my blessings this year.  What are three of yours.

    Mike Carrell's Homily.

Readings: Our first reading from Sirach includes the social doctrine of the Church; however, it is yet to be put into practice: ‘The Lord is a God of justice who has no favorites!’   In our reading from Second Timothy Paul gives glory to God for allowing him to bring Christ to the Gentiles.

Homily: Our Mass began today with the lighting of the candles by Tori and Zoe [maybe Leo, too]. It was accompanied with a reading given by Buddy from Matthew, who reminds each of us to become a Light of the World; like a city built on a hill top.

We then joined together, in a penitential rite, following the example of the humble man in the gospel who asks the Lord to shown him mercy.

Recall that the Liturgy of the Word today placed us in a synagogue with two men; the one who was arrogant spent his time bragging to God about how holy he was. This Pharisee journeyed home empty.

The humble tax collector chose to open his heart to receive the power of the Holy Spirit; he left the synagogue filled with grace.

As we begin our Liturgy of the Eucharist, we celebrate another tradition.  It is an anointing with blessed oil for the sick and the elderly and for those, filled with grace, who prayerfully, journey with them.

John's brief description of The Sunday Night.

It started at 15 minutes before 10:00 P.M. Sunday night.  Aviana & I were already asleep.  Ro woke us up, saying a big storm was coming , and,  in fact, that the wind had already smashed in the bay window in the living room.

We put on our bike helmets, Ro & Aviana scooted into the hall closet.  I was standing with my right hand on the closet door handle, planning to squeeze in, when suddenly CRASH!  Then, quiet.

    IMG_0886

    Neighboring House.

People began coming out of their houses & checking on their neighbors.  Rosemary especially went yelling for Joyce Scott, our 91 year old neighbor just across the street.  Her daughter from San Antonio was in the house with her, along with the daughter’s husband, just out of the hospital.

Joyce’s house was almost demolished and no response was coming out.  The cops were all over, so she told one.  He found them alive and shaken in their hall closet.   They could not get out, so the cop got them out.

    IMG_0887

It began to pour, a neighbor couple begged a place to spend the night, and we all went to sleep after putting out about 20 containers to catch ceiling drips.

Then began one of the most touching & humbling days I’ve had in a while.

    IMG_0893

Our friend Chris Phipps was walking Tulip Lane toward our house when two young dads about 35, plus their 3 sons each yelled to Chris, “Know anybody who really needs help?”  “Yes, that house on the corner,” said Chris.

Those dads & their sons, along with others who just walked up, pitched in and worked like beavers. Into the afternoon.  All our trophy trees were stripped of their branches.   They ended up  piled all around the house.

About 9:00 John Bresson & Doug LeBlanc with two of his buddies all showed up with a chain saw.  And did they go to work!  Slowly the branches got pulled away from the house, cut up, and piled on the edge of the property.

    IMG_0895

    Gym, St. Mark's Boys School

All of our trophies have been stripped of their branches and look naked.  They will all have to come down.  The house now is covered with a few enormous blue tarps held down with 1 by 4’s nailed down.

People continue to come looking to help.  Kids walk the streets handing out water, sandwiches, and cookies.  Central Market, which got hammered, has supplied free breakfasts, lunches, and dinners for all workers and home owners from food wagons.

The goodness & generosity of people has again touched my spirit.

    A little story for perspective.

Victoria doing her magic lighting of the candles.

It was only a week ago this past Thursday that I went to visit my spine surgeon for my 6 week post op check up.  I expected to get a looser leash, like maybe a physical therapist.  Rosemary came with me, mostly because she did not want me to come home saying I could do things she doubted came from the surgeon.

So, what happens?  I got more freedom than I could imagine.  I was even asked if I wanted a physical therapist.  I said I did not care.  He asked if I learned anything new from the physical therapist I had pre-op.  I said I really learned nothing.  So, he said just go do what you know.

I was so stunned, so surprised, I was in tears.  Lucky I had Rosemary there.  She would have never believed me.

So, from the office in the Presby  complex we headed home all elated in our Prius.  We took Royal Lane west from Central and caught the light at Hillcrest.  We were behind a lady.  The red light changed to green and the lady sat there.  I flashed my lights one time.

Then, Bamm!  We were tail gated.

What now?  All the horror stories I have heard of hit & run people, people who get angry and blame the victims.

    IMG_5831

I am proud to say, Carol, that I am jealous of your hair.

So we went to the first left bound lane, pulled over to the right hand curb, and got out.  My elation had turned to a downer.  At least the person had not tried to run away and pulled right up behind us.  Moreover she jumped out of her Infinity SUV, asking, "Are you okay?  Anybody get hurt?   I am so sorry, my foot just slipped off the brake pedal."  I know you are warned never to do this if you caused the accident.

Corey was the lady's name, middle aged, slender, and probably from the neighborhood.  She had a lot of integrity, claimed she was responsible, gave us photos of her papers, especially the insurance paper.

By the next day, Friday, her insurance company was in touch, they offered us a rental, which we did not think we needed for a few days, and we booked the Prius into the local service King this past Thursday.

So, cursed is the one who trusts in human beings?  Jeremiah, you must have been having a bad day, a bunch of which I know you had in your life.

I think the real challenge for us is to trust.

Who are the people in your life whom you trust?
