Sunday Homily
Cursed is the one who trusts in human beings.
This morning I would like to talk about this line from Jeremiah, which, you know me, I do not like.
A little story for perspective.
Victoria doing her magic lighting of the candles.
It was only a week ago this past Thursday that I went to visit my spine surgeon for my 6 week post op check up. I expected to get a looser leash, like maybe a physical therapist. Rosemary came with me, mostly because she did not want me to come home saying I could do things she doubted came from the surgeon.
So, what happens? I got more freedom than I could imagine. I was even asked if I wanted a physical therapist. I said I did not care. He asked if I learned anything new from the physical therapist I had pre-op. I said I really learned nothing. So, he said just go do what you know.
I was so stunned, so surprised, I was in tears. Lucky I had Rosemary there. She would have never believed me.
Buddy reading the Blessing of The Winter Candles. You just gets better each week, Buddy.
So, from the office in the Presby complex we headed home all elated in our Prius. We took Royal Lane west from Central and caught the light at Hillcrest. We were behind a lady. The red light changed to green and the lady sat there. I flashed my lights one time.
Then, Bamm! We were tail gated.
What now? All the horror stories I have heard of hit & run people, people who get angry and blame the victims.
I am proud to say, Carol, that I am jealous of your hair.
So we went to the first left bound lane, pulled over to the right hand curb, and got out. My elation had turned to a downer. At least the person had not tried to run away and pulled right up behind us. Moreover she jumped out of her Infinity SUV, asking, "Are you okay? Anybody get hurt? I am so sorry, my foot just slipped off the brake pedal." I know you are warned never to do this if you caused the accident.
The Music Musicians Ben & David.
Corey was the lady's name, middle aged, slender, and probably from the neighborhood. She had a lot of integrity, claimed she was responsible, gave us photos of her papers, especially the insurance paper.
By the next day, Friday, her insurance company was in touch, they offered us a rental, which we did not think we needed for a few days, and we booked the Prius into the local service King this past Thursday.
Elevation time.
So, cursed is the one who trusts in human beings? Jeremiah, you must have been having a bad day, a bunch of which I know you had in your life.
I think the real challenge for us is to trust.
Who are the people in your life whom you trust?

Amos 7: But Amos stood up to Amaziah: "I never set up to be a preacher, never had plans to be a preacher. I raised cattle and I pruned trees. Then God took me off the farm and said, 'Go preach to my people Israel.'
Ephesians 1: Because of the sacrifice of the Messiah, his blood poured out on the altar of the Cross, we're a free people – free of penalties and punishments chalked up by all our misdeeds. And not just barely free, either. Abundantly free!
Mark 6: Then they were on the road. They preached with joyful urgency that life can be radically different; right and left they sent the demons packing; they brought wellness to the sick, anointing their bodies, healing their spirits.

In our first reading, the word of the Lord came to Jonah; he was to call the people of Nineveh to turn from their evil ways.
Our second reading from 1 Corinthians is reminding us what is really important;
be Christ in the world.
Hi, Leo.
Homily: Mike
The first words in our reading from the Mark gospel were a call given by Jesus of Nazareth to follow him to Jerusalem, ‘The time is fulfilled, the kingdom of God is at hand, repent, and welcome and live the Good News of Jesus Christ.
Jesus then calls Peter and Andrew and James and John, to leave their nets and follow him, to become fishers of men. It is important to realize that the inspired writers of all four gospels began each gospel with a summary of the important teachings that they had presented within their gospels.
Leo?? Anybody seen Leo around?
Today’s reading is about the enhancement that the early Church made to the sabbath synagogue service of Judaism to form the Christian Liturgy of the Word.
During the Babylonian captivity the sabbath synagogue service began to come into existence, for the Jews were in exile, the temple was a long way off, and it had been destroyed. This service of worship and instruction was implemented and Judaism did survive; its worship and its religious instruction that had been handed down to each following generation had become the glue that held the Jews together.
Welcome to the Choir, Emma. You sing beautifully.
At the time of Jesus of Nazareth, it was a service each sabbath with Psalms to be sung to worship God, a readings that was an expectation from the Law and Prophets for the coming of the Messiah, and a teaching on that same reading given by an elder or scribe, if possible.
With that in mind, listen how our early Church chose to enhance the sabbath synagogue service for the Church’s Liturgy of the Word and show, at the same time, the sacred relationship that would always exist between Judaism and Christianity:
Our Candle Man of The Week, Ben, at work.
In today’s reading, Jesus entered the synagogue and taught, and we are told that by the power and authority of the Holy Spirit he astounded those at the service for his teaching of the Good News was unlike those given by the scribes. The scribe could only give a teaching on the expectation of the passage; Jesus’ words gave a fulfillment of the expectation.
This fulfillment was followed by a spiritual instruction given on the fulfillment [like the one you are reading]. The inspired writers of a complementary parable Story about this enhancement, given in the Luke gospel, put the fulfillment of an expectation on the coming of the Messiah from Isaiah this way: Jesus stood up after the reading from Isaiah in the synagogue service saying, ‘This day these words are being fulfilled in your hearing.’
The Team, Leo, Georgie, Buddy, and Deacon Mike, waiting to share his homily.
Something to think about: Yesterday’s Sabbath Synagogue Service, at one location, began with Hymns and Blessings, and a reading from the Torah from a calendar of readings that stretches over one complete lunar year.
Mike, scoping out the landscape.
Acts of the Apostles 2: Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them.
Corinthians 12: To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit.
John 20: Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you."

Reading 1 with John Schanot
A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles
At that time Peter stood up and, backed by the other eleven, spoke out with bold urgency: “Fellow Jews, all of you who are visiting Jerusalem, listen carefully and get this story straight. Jesus of Nazareth, a man thoroughly accredited by God—the wonders that God did through him are common knowledge—this Jesus, following the deliberate and well-thought-out plan of God, was betrayed by men who took the law into their own hands, and was handed over to you. You pinned him to a cross and killed him. God untied the death ropes and raised him up. Death was no match for him. David said it all:
I saw God before me for all time.
Nothing can shake me; he’s right by my side.
I’m glad from the inside out, ecstatic;
I’ve pitched my tent in the land of hope.
I know there will be no trip to Hades;
and no stench of death.
You’ve got my feet on the life-path,
with your face shining sun-joy all around.
Let me be completely frank with you. Our ancestor David is dead and buried—his tomb is in plain sight today. But being also a prophet and knowing that God had sworn that a descendent of his would rule his kingdom, and seeing far ahead, David talked of the resurrection of the Messiah—‘no trip to Hades, no stench of death.’ This Jesus, God raised up. And every one of us here is a witness to it. Then, raised to the heights at the right hand of God and receiving the promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father, he poured out the Spirit he had just received. That is what, today, you see and hear.
Our word for today.
Remember?
Reading 2 with Mary Jane
A Reading from the First Letter of Peter
My sisters and brothers: You call out to God for help and he helps—he’s a good Father that way. But don’t forget, he’s also a responsible Father, and won’t let you get by with sloppy living.
Your life is a journey you must travel with a deep consciousness of God. It cost God plenty to get you out of that dead-end, empty-headed life you grew up in. He paid with the blood of Christ, you know. He died like an unblemished, sacrificial lamb. And this was no afterthought. Even though it has only lately become public knowledge—at the end of ages—God always knew he was going to do this for you. It’s because of this Messiah, whom God raised from the dead and glorified, that you trust in God, that you know you have a future in God.
Our word for today.
A Reading from the Gospel of John with Deacon Mike
On that same first day of the week, two of them were walking to the village of Emmaus, about seven miles out of Jerusalem. They were deep in conversation, going over all these things that had happened. In the middle of their talk and questions, Jesus came up and walked along with them. But they were not able to recognize who he was. He asked, “What’s this you’re discussing so intently as you walk along?” They stood there, long-faced, like they had lost their best friend. Then one of them, Cleopas, said, “Are you the only one in Jerusalem who hasn’t heard what’s happened during the last few days?” Jesus said, “What has happened?”
They said, “The things that happened to Jesus of Nazareth. He was a man of God, a prophet, dynamic in work and word, blessed by God and the people. Then our high priests and leaders betrayed him, got him sentenced to death, and crucified him. We had our hopes up that he was the One about to deliver Israel. And it’s now the third day since it happened. Now some of our women have completely confused us. Early this morning they were at the tomb and couldn’t find his body. They came back with the story that they had seen a vision of angels who said he was alive. Some of our friends went off to check, and found the tomb empty, just as the women said, but they didn’t see Jesus.”
Then Jesus said to them, “So thick-headed! Why can’t you simply believe what the prophets said? Don’t you see that the Messiah had to suffer and only then enter into his glory?” Then he started at the beginning with the Books of Moses, and went through all the Prophets, pointing out everything in the Scriptures that referred to him.
They came to the edge of the village, and Jesus acted as if he were going on. But they said: “Stay and have supper with us. It’s nearly evening; the day is done.” So he went with them, and here is what happened. He sat down at the table with them. Taking the bread, he blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. At that moment, wide-eyed, they recognized him. And then he disappeared. They said to each other, “Didn’t we feel on fire as he conversed with us on the road, as he opened up the Scriptures for us?”
