Reminder for 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time, August 18, 2024

Proverbs 9:  "Are you confused about life, don't know what's going on? Come with me, oh come, have dinner with me!   I've prepared a wonderful spread – fresh-baked bread, roast lamb, carefully selected wines.  Leave your impoverished confusion and live! Walk up the street to a life with meaning."

Ephesians 5:  Sing songs from your heart to Christ.  Sing praises over everything, any excuse for a song to God the Father in the name of our Master, Jesus Christ.

John 6:  In the same way that the fully alive Father sent me here and I live because of him, so the one who makes a meal of me lives because of me.

  • 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time, August 16, 2020–Special info on this Sunday’s Celebration

    A note from John Cade:

In the summer of 1956, when still in the seminary, I spent a week at the Trappist monastery north of Atlanta, outside Conyers, Georgia.  I got to experience how Trappist monks end every single day, expressing their devotion to Mary, Jesus’ mother—a hundred men standing together and chanting in Latin, Salve Regina, Hail Holy Queen.  August 15th is one of the days we have traditionally honored Mary.  I will chant this hymn in her honor at the end of Sunday Mass.

    SALVE REGINA.                                                   HAIL HOLY QUEEN.

Salve Regina, mater misericordiae:  vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Hail holy queen, mother of mercy; Our life, our sweetness and our hope.

Ad te clamamus, exsules, filii Hevae.  Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes in hac lacrimarum valle.

To you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.  To you do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Eia ergo, Advocata nostra, illos tuos misericordes oculos ad nos converte.

    Turn then, most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us;

Et Jesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui, nobis post hoc exsilium, ostende.

And after this exile, show us the blessed fruit of you womb, Jesus.

O Clemens.   O pia.      O dulcis Virgo Maria.

O clement,   O loving,   O sweet Virgin Mary.

Amos 7:   But Amos stood up to Amaziah: "I never set up to be a preacher, never had plans to be a preacher. I raised cattle and I pruned trees.  Then God took me off the farm and said, 'Go preach to my people Israel.'

Ephesians 1:  Because of the sacrifice of the Messiah, his blood poured out on the altar of the Cross, we're a free people – free of penalties and punishments chalked up by all our misdeeds. And not just barely free, either. Abundantly free!

Mark 6:   Then they were on the road. They preached with joyful urgency that life can be radically different;   right and left they sent the demons packing; they brought wellness to the sick, anointing their bodies, healing their spirits.
