Mark 11:  Hosanna!   Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!

Isaiah 50: I gave my back to those who beat me,  my cheeks to those who plucked my beard;  my face I did not shield  from buffets and spitting.

Philippians 2:  Rather, he emptied himself,  taking the form of a slave,   coming in human likeness;  and found human in appearance,  he humbled himself,  becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Mark 14: The Passion of the Lord

Rosemary's Blessing:

Gethsemane  by Mary Oliver

The grass never sleeps.

Or the roses.

Nor does the lily have a secret eye that shuts until morning.

Jesus said, wait with me. But the disciples slept.

The cricket has such splendid fringe on its feet,

and it sings, have you noticed, with its whole body,

and heaven knows if it ever sleeps.

Jesus said, wait with me.

And maybe the stars did, maybe the wind wound itself into a silver tree, and didn't move,

maybe the lake far away, where once he walked as on a blue pavement, lay still and waited, wild awake.

Oh the dear bodies, slumped and eye-shut, that could not

keep that vigil, how they must have wept,

so utterly human, knowing this too

must be a part of the story.

Deuteronomy 4:  Yes. What other great nation has gods that are intimate with them the way God, our God, is with us, always ready to listen to us?

James 1:  Real religion, the kind that passes muster before God the Father, is this: Reach out to the homeless and loveless in their plight, and guard against corruption from the godless world.

Mark 7:  Jesus called the crowd together again and said, "Listen now, all of you – take this to heart.   It's not what you swallow that pollutes your life; it's what you vomit – that's the real pollution."

  • 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time, August 16, 2020–Special info on this Sunday’s Celebration

    A note from John Cade:

In the summer of 1956, when still in the seminary, I spent a week at the Trappist monastery north of Atlanta, outside Conyers, Georgia.  I got to experience how Trappist monks end every single day, expressing their devotion to Mary, Jesus’ mother—a hundred men standing together and chanting in Latin, Salve Regina, Hail Holy Queen.  August 15th is one of the days we have traditionally honored Mary.  I will chant this hymn in her honor at the end of Sunday Mass.

    SALVE REGINA.                                                   HAIL HOLY QUEEN.

Salve Regina, mater misericordiae:  vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Hail holy queen, mother of mercy; Our life, our sweetness and our hope.

Ad te clamamus, exsules, filii Hevae.  Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes in hac lacrimarum valle.

To you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.  To you do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Eia ergo, Advocata nostra, illos tuos misericordes oculos ad nos converte.

    Turn then, most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us;

Et Jesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui, nobis post hoc exsilium, ostende.

And after this exile, show us the blessed fruit of you womb, Jesus.

O Clemens.   O pia.      O dulcis Virgo Maria.

O clement,   O loving,   O sweet Virgin Mary.

    Rosemary's Blessing:

We are called to be co-partners and co-workers in the unfolding of God’s vision. Our faith brings us to a deep truth: we are made in the image and likeness of a God who is unconditional and unfathomable love. Jesus lives and teaches this idea of God that surpasses all other concepts of God. Our God is intimately close to us and in love with us. We abide in God.
