Tori & Zoe at work lighting our candles.

Exodus: 2nd book of the Bible & of the Torah, the first 5 books of the Bible.

Date of Composition: put together ca 450-400 BCE, though elements come from 1000 BCE at least.

Author(s):  Moses, no.  At least 3 sources, maybe 4, e.g., the Yahweh (J) source, the Elohim (E) source, the Priestly (P) source, and even the Deuteronomy Source.

While Zoe & Tori light the candles, Georgie reads the Candle Blessing.

Subject:  The 10 Commandments–observations:

  1. Academics see 3 maybe 4 versions of the 10 commandments, Exodus 34 (the oldest), Exodus 20 (our selection), Deuteronomy 5 (the last)
  2. The versions come from the sources composing at different times, for example these 4
  • The Yahweh Source, 10th Century BCE, therefore, Exodus 34
  • The Elohim Source, 9th Century BCE, therefore Exodus 20
  • The Deuteronomy Source, 7th Century BCE, therefore Deuteronomy 5
  • The Priestly Source, edited all the sources in 6th Century BCE (450-400 BCE, at the end of the Babylonian Captivity).  The 7 Day Creation Story comes from this source at this time.

Source:  Bishop (Episcopal) John Shelby Spong (Excellent Biblical Scholar)

Side Note:  it is interesting to realize that the 10 Commandments are not considered the first set of laws.  For instance, the famous Code of Hamurabi .  Hamurabi was the ruler of Babylon (good old Babylon again) 18-20 centuries even before the Christ event.

Good Morning to the Kerns, Michael, Candy, Ben, and Holly around here somewhere.

The Week's Blessings (3)

Two Sundays before Ash Wednesday we had a first reading from the Book of Job.  Job was the man over whom Yahweh and Satan had a little wager.

Job was a prosperous man.  So Satan bet that Job would curse Yahweh if Yahweh allowed Satan to send into his life a whole lot of afflictions.

IMG_2895

And Good Morning to you, also, Vanessa and Stella.

The line that Job is famous for comes after Job has been flattened.  He says to his tormentors, “The Lord gives.  The Lord takes away.  Blessed be the Lord.”

This has been one of those rare Job weeks in my life.  Things started going down Thursday about 2:00.  I felt a slight whisper in my chest.    I know my physical system well enough to spot when something different is happening.

The Team, Georgie & Buddy.

Rosemary & I had just spent Monday to Thursday with Kay Reddick in the small Ontario town of Lindsay.  We were just departing to drive into Toronto to share dinner with Renee, one of the Reddick kids.

When we arrived at Renee’s house, I knew I was coming down with something.  It turned out to be Influenza Type B.  I struggled with that all the way home and through Saturday & Sunday until I saw my favorite internist Monday.  Initially, he thought I had severe chest congestion.  Only on a just to be sure did he do an influenza test.  In ten minutes my doctor said, “You got it.”

Ladies 3

Ladies' Luncheon, Friday.

I felt immediate improvement once I got on Tamaflu.  What a gift.   But, as far as I was concerned this diagnosis complicated my life.  I had hoped to join the Dickinson team.  I never made it.  “The Lord gives.  The Lord takes away.  Blessed be the Lord.”

I truly have no significant reason to be anything other than grateful—for my health.

  Laadies 1

Who let these people out on the streets?

I had a five day menu of Tamaflu and every morning I felt better until Saturday morning I woke up and knew I was healed.  I am grateful for my health.  I am disappointed I did not get to take part in Dickinson, but I am touched and proud of our community which contributed so much.

What are you grateful for this third Sunday of Lent?

    Readings:

Deuteronomy 26, 4-10     You shall bow down in his presence.

Psalm 91,  Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble.

Romans 10, 8–13,   The word is near you.

Luke 4, 1-13,   Jesus was led into the desert to be tempted by the devil.

    Gen 4

Says Genevieve, "Welcome in, Folks.  Happy Valentine"s Day.

    Deuteronomy

The scene: The Israelites have escaped from Egypt and have been wandering in the desert for years.  They are just about to enter The Land.  They are assembled.  Moses is addressing them and reminding them of all Yahweh has done for them over the years of wandering.

    Cole & fam.

Cole, also, with Erin & Diane his mom & Grandmom, says, "Hi, Everybody, Come on in".

In our chapter he is telling them that when they have settled in their new land, where he will not accompany them, they must take a basket full of a portion of their first harvest, present it to the rabbi, and offer it as a sacrifice of thanksgiving.

Who: Though about Moses, Deuteronomy is a compilation of numerous sources.

Guess when: post Babylonian Captivity, say 555.  Easy to remember.

Having a happy, healthy, positive Lent?

Last week I talked with you about having a happy, healthy, and positive Lent.  How’s it going?   I have an example that may expand your possibilities.

I have already mentioned a little bit of this story last week, but would like to get more into it.

    David

    David, Happy Birthday to Drew.

At the Jewish Community Center, where I arrive at 5:30 for a spin class, there is a guy named Michael at the entrance counter.  He is from Nigeria and new since the beginning of the year.  There was a lady on the counter for years, but she retired.  Nice, but nothing special.  Michael is special.

First off, he seems to have memorized every person’s name and usually what they want when they check in.  We introduced ourselves my first time to see him.  The second time he knew my name, knew I wanted only one large towel instead of two, and that I like a locker around the number 30.  He had it all.  There are hundreds of people who check in at this counter every morning.  I hear him call them by name.

    John

Happy 22nd Anniversary, John, to you and Lambrini.

We chat a bit both when I come in and when I leave.  So, as I mentioned last week, I told him that our Friday spin teacher was having a birthday, that I was going to get the class to sing, and that I was going to give her a Cliff Bar (instead of a cupcake.  Good figure).

So, Friday morning I mention to him I am going to celebrate Jennifer, and he says he will do something.  What I don’t know.  Like I said last week, what he does is he runs in as we are singing at the beginning of the class and sticks a big sheet of poster paper on the glass wall. The poster says, “Happy Birthday, Jennifer.”  I was surprised and delighted.

    Dick

    Happy Birthday, Dick.

Then at the end of the 45 minute class, Michael rushes in with a basket of 20 or so cold rolled face towels.   Again I was surprised, totally, and delighted.  Never before had any staff person done this.

Michael is special.  He has a pretty insignificant job in the Center and he has used it as a platform to make a marvelous, positive difference.  He helps us all to start off the day with delight.  He makes it a joy to walk in the door, even on a cold morning in the dark.

    Cole 1

Thanks, Cole for being a super candle lighter.

Do this and you make for a happy, healthy, and positive Lent.

    So, how are you doing?

Malachi 3: Look! I'm sending my messenger on ahead to clear the way for me. Suddenly, out of the blue, the Leader you've been looking for will enter his Temple – yes, the Messenger of the Covenant, the one you've been waiting for.

Hebrews 2:  That's why he had to enter into every detail of human life. Then, when he came before God as high priest to get rid of the people's sins,  he would have already experienced it all himself – all the pain, all the testing – and would be able to help where help was needed.

Luke 2:  Then when the days stipulated by Moses for purification were complete, they took him up to Jerusalem to offer him to God  as commanded in God's Law: "Every male who opens the womb shall be a holy offering to God,"

    Rosemary's Blessing:

What good did it do when you frowned?  Let me ask:

Did it help you at all to accomplish your task?

Did it lighten your burden or help you along?

Did the frown that you wore make a right out of wrong?

What good did it do to be grouchy today?

Did your surliness drive any trouble away?

Did you cover more ground than you usually do?

Because of the grouch that you carried with you?

If not, what’s the use of a grouch or a frown?

If it won’t smooth a path or a grim trouble down?

If it doesn’t assist you, it isn’t worth while:

Your work may be hard, but just do it and smile.

    Mass 1

    Does it get any better??

    Homily

Recall how the gospel ended last Sunday: Jesus told the chief priests and the other religious leaders that evil men and prostitutes were going to enter the Kingdom before they did. Visualize this: The angels in heaven have begun to rejoice for those who have repented and turned to God.  So Jesus said to the lawyers who have rejected him, “Have you not read the Law and the Prophets; where The Father’s servant, Isaiah, taught you how to bear fruit; we are to love one another with goodness and kindness, with tenderness and compassion.  In the John gospel Jesus addresses us this way: “I’ve chosen you from the world, to go and bear fruit that will last. “I am the vine; you are the branches.
