Sunday Homily, May 27, Pentecost

Readings: Acts 2, 1-11; Psalm 104; 1 Corinthians 12, 3-13; John 20, 19-23

Breaking Out

We had been traveling all night and all the next day to reach Nairobi recently. I was dead, we were all dead when we got off the plane about nine in the evening.

This is the airport that witnessed a lion walk in one night and lie down right in the lobby. In the 80’s. The airport borders the Nairobi game park. It used to be wide open, but now is glassed into sections, probably for security, if not lions. 

I remember when I got off of the plane, I said to myself, "Okay, Stack, it is time to try your Swahili." So as I walked down a corridor I saw a cleaning lady, a little, middle aged Kenya woman, and I put together a simple question, "Where is the bathroom?"  (Choo kiko wapi?) Granted, I could even see the bathroom down the corridor a bit. But I wanted to break out. 

After I asked this simple question, the little lady looks at me and says, "WHAT??!!" in this loud impatient voice. Talk about being deflated! I was ready to chuck the whole language. I was embarrassed.  It was like no more Swahili for me. English. 

However, as I got beyond her and the comment, I remembered that Kenyans are not as good with Swahili as Tanzanians. I was using Tanzanian quality. Maybe she, too, was just tired and worn out with rich tourists. 

Whatever it was, I renewed my intention and started talking with the immigration & security people.  There I got a pretty good receptions. And then our driver from the Lutheran Guest House went crazy.  That was consoling. 

I talk about this because what I had with that little lady was a type of a pentecost experience. I was scared like those people in the room. Scared even before I talked with the lady.  Then I was more scared and discouraged. Fortunately, because I knew I used to have the language well enough, I broke out again and it worked. In fact, finally I realized it felt like getting back on a bicycle after 20 years.  I just took off. 

This pentecost experience pits risk vs fear. We are all like those fellows in the upper room. We can be scared of so many things. Even scared of standing up here and reading. Scared of speaking out, of leaving a job I don’t like, of taking a new job, or hundreds of other scares. Getting married!

Growth involves risking to break out of the trap of fear. When I break out, even if I fail, consolation results.

    2 Samuel observations: (Following upon last week)

    What :  2 Samuel is the second book in a 4 book semi-history of the early tribe of Israelites.  The books, 1 & 2 Samuel, 1 & 2 Kings.  The story goes from Samuel, the last of the judges, to Saul, the first of the kings, to King David (with Goliath, Jonathan, Mikah and dancing, Bathsheba & Solomon).

    The two books of Samuel focus on Saul & David and their difficult relationship.

    When composed:   during the Babylonian Captivity, ca. 555 before Christ.  Why at this time?  Same reason why so much was composed at this time, to explain why the Captivity, to keep the tribal identity, and to provide hope for a brighter future.

    Who composed:   Tradition said Jeremiah the prophet, but contemporary studies show at least 3 writers.

    Today's selection:  the prophet Nathan is chastising King David because he has been really bad.  See the homily, a Bible story today.

    A Bible Story

    This morning I would like to tell a bible story.  It is about the great Jewish hero, King David.  I tell the story because it is background to today’s first reading from 2 Samuel.  More than likely you have not a clue about where today’s passage is coming from.

    Here we go.  This is the way the composers put it together, not necessarily how it was.

    Anybody notice?  Buddy has his own robe.  Congratulations, Buddy.

     

     

    There was a man named Jesse who had 8 sons.  Samuel, the last of the judges is sent by Yahweh to find a successor to Saul, the present king who is misbehaving and Yahweh has decided to reject him. 

    Read about Saul and you can’t help but see bipolar symptoms.

    So Samuel goes to Bethlehem to the house of Jesse, who has 8 of sons.  The first 7 pass by and Yahweh tells Samuel, "Not this one."   Eventually number 8 comes in, Little David.   When Samuel sees him, Yahweh tells him, “That’s the one.”

    So, David is especially chosen by Yahweh, a hero quality.

    David goes to Saul’s court and becomes a favorite.  Then in a fight with the Philistines, little David kills the giant Goliath.  Another hero quality.

    Time goes on, Saul gets jealous because David is so popular and he decides to kill him.  The second part of 1 Samuel details all the struggles between Saul and David.  David even has a chance to kill a sleeping Saul in a cave, but he simply cuts off a piece of his cloak to show Saul later.  Saul cries, swears he will stop trying to kill David, but then continues.  David’s mercy, another hero quality.

    Time goes on, Saul actually commits suicide, and David becomes the popular king of the Jewish nation.  His army is defeating all their enemies.

    One morning our hero king is strolling on the roof of his palace.  While walking he spies a beautiful woman on another roof taking a bath.  He invites her over for dinner and, behold, she becomes pregnant.  David is already married to Saul’s daughter, Michal, but Yahweh has rejected her because she mocked David for dancing before the people in a victory parade.  The woman, Bathsheba. 

    So David decides to invite Bathsheba’s husband to dinner.  Her husband, Uriah, is with the army in the field.   David gets him drunk and tells him to go home to his wife.  Then Uriah will assume that Bashsheba’s baby is his.

    However, Uriah tells David he won’t sleep under a roof while his men are sleeping in the field.  So that plan won’t work. 

    Then David tells his commander to put Uriah on the front line, get into a battle, then pull the other men back, leaving Uriah.  So Uriah is killed.

     So David, our hero king, invites Bathsheba to join his household. 

    At this point the prophet Nathan of our story is told by Yahweh to visit David.   Nathan tells David a little story.

    Guess who now walks.  Beware.  "Good Morning, Genevieve."
     

     

    There were two men, a rich man who had everything, large flocks and every convenience.  The second man, a neighbor had nothing more than a little lamb which he had bought.  The man loved the lamb and even slept with it.

    Two visitors come to the rich man’s house.  Instead of preparing a meal from one of his own lambs, the rich man takes the poor man’s lamb for his meal.  Nathan asks David what should happen to that rich man.  David says he should be severely punished. 

     Nathan says, “You are that rich man!”   David is stunned and goes into penance and mourning.  This is where our story comes in.  All this happened before our little reading.

    A lesson?   Even the hero, the chosen of Yahweh, fails and commits sin.  We are all King Davids.   

    Lesson 2: Yahweh forgives and accepts.  This theme is exemplified by our gospel, the woman bathing Jesus’ feet with her tears.  Forgiveness and acceptance.

    I would suggest it also involves self forgiveness and self acceptance when we fail to be what we would like ourselves to be.

     Introduction: 

    Before the Exile the OT prophets warned the Israelites of the punishment they were about to receive for not being obedient to the Commandments.  After returning from their exile to find their temple, homes and fields in destruction they were exhorted by the OT prophets to restore and rebuild and purify themselves before God.

    The written words of the very small book of the prophet Malachi anticipated the coming of a messenger to prepare their hearts to welcome and put into practice the life-giving and love-giving words and actions of the Messiah. 

    Our reading from St. Paul’s second letter to the Thessalonians continues this theme: the virtuous will be known by their words and actions.

    Homily:

    When our first reading begins with these words, ‘a day is coming,’ it is speaking of the Day of Judgment to separate those whose life and love giving words and actions have served God and neighbor from those who failed to do so.

    The Prophet Malachi implies that those who have served God and neighbor have done so naturally because they have been purified [by the Spirit].  Indeed, Jesus’ words in the Matthew gospel to those who have shown mercy and justice invite them to enter the kingdom of God prepared for them from the foundation of the world.

    They are told that they had clothed him when he was naked, given water and food when he was hungry and thirsty.  The just are perplexed; they ask him ‘when did we clothe you or visit you when you were sick or in prison?’ 

    The Lord replies, ‘when you did it to the least of those around you, you did it to me and for me through the Spirit.’

    And we begin…

     

    In today’s gospel his disciples ask Jesus when this Day of Judgment was coming. The gospels tell us that only the Father knows the day when his Son, the bridegroom, will come for his bride; but Jesus replies that those who have endured persecution and have chosen to be led by the Holy Spirit will recognize the signs in the heaven. Then they are to raise their heads knowing that their redemption is at hand.

    Ten years ago I spent some time examining some early Christian writings that were not included in the NT.  I came across a writing that was done by a 22 year old, well educated, young woman named Perpetua living in the north African city of Carthage in the year 203 AD.

     She was writing about herself during the last days of her life. She had just finished the final stage of the catechumenate when she had been arrested for being a Christian.  [The Romans in Carthage needed some Christians to throw to the Lions on the Emperor’s Birthday.]

    Perpetua was baptized as she waited to be put into prison. Her father came to visit her, begging that she tell the judge that she was not a Christian.  She pointed to a pot near her asking him to tell her what it was.  Then she said to him that in like manner she could not be anything other than what she was, ‘a Christian.’ 

    With her head raised high, she identified herself as Christian before the judge.  She described prison as a dark hole, but she prayed for endurance with three others who were catechumen; including her maid, Felicity, who was expecting a child.

    On the night before they were taken to the arena to be thrown to the wild animals during the festivities these martyrs were given their last meal.  These four Christians called it their love feast; they were receiving the Bread blessed and broken.   By no other name did they want to be called.    Let us cherish the Christian name to which each of us has been called.

    Introduction to the readings

    To set the stage for todays readings, the Jewish religious feasts were celebrated in conjunction with harvest festivals.  For example, the feasts of Passover, Unleavened Bread and First Fruits occur over a period of eight days when the barley was in the fields waiting for its first sheaves to be offered in thanksgiving to God.

    Seven weeks later the Jews celebrated Pentecost at the beginning of summer when the wheat in the fields was waiting for its sheaves to be offered in thanksgiving to God. The feast of Tabernacles was the last feast of three feasts celebrated in the fall when the dates, figs and olives were harvested.  The thanksgivings given to God for the harvests were from the heart!

    Our first reading from 2nd Kings is an event in the life of Elisha, the prophet. The prophets Elijah and Elisha did not write books; they proclaimed the one god of all, Yahweh. They chastised the Jewish Kings who called themselves Jews but worshipped idols.

    Elisha is the head of a brotherhood of 100 prophets who are sitting with him in this first Reading.  Our second reading is a letter from Paul to the Ephesians addressing all those who welcome and live the good news of Jesus Christ. They are, with Christ, one body.

    The Gospel of John: 6:1-15    

    If you have a reference Bible and looked up our first reading in 2nd Kings 4:42-44 you would find in the margin, John 6:1-15, our gospel reading. Recall that the good news of Jesus, the Messiah, fulfills the expectation of his coming given within the Law, Prophets and Psalms [hence our Liturgy of the Word].  A non-descript man brings twenty barley loaves and a few ears of corn as first fruits to Elisha the prophet, a man of God.

    There was a famine in the land; the man is giving thanks to God through Elisha.  Elisha welcomes the gift and tells a servant to set it before his 100 pupils.  His servant says that he can’t, for it won’t be enough to feed them. Elisha replies that the gift is from god. They will be able to be filled and have some left over.  The 100 have heard this, and they accept in thanksgiving this man’s gifts and their teacher’s wisdom.  They will eat each bite slowly, with continuing thanks, saving enough for Elisha and his servant to eat also.

    In our gospel reading Jesus, too, receives a gift of first fruits—five barley loaves and two fish. We know that it’s a gift of first fruits for we are told that ‘Passover is near,’ the grain is still in the fields. Andrew is like the servant in the reading from 2nd Kings, saying, ‘What good are these for so many?  I’ve told you before that the stories within each of the four gospels that seem to be about a multiplication of loaves or fish, aren’t what they seem to be.

    These parables anticipate what will happen much later, and they do happen. The loaves in these parables are symbols for the twelve apostles.  We are told here, that from the 5 loaves, 5000 are going to be fed; from five of the twelve to whom Jesus gives this mission, as Church, to feed the Jews with the good news. But, more importantly, there are 12 baskets filled with leftovers—indistinguishable from the anticipated twelve, who will have received the Holy Spirit! The church has grown by leaps and bounds.  It happens just this way in Luke Acts 3-4 after the twelve receive the Holy Spirit!  In thanksgiving we are called to recognize with one another, through the power of the Holy Spirit, Christ present within and among us.   We are his body!

    Who:  
    one of the 12 minor prophets.  Why?  Small work.  Only 14 little chapters.  Vs the Big 3, who have chapters numbering into the 60’s.  Zecharia is really the author of this work.

    Time:  
    post Babylonian Captivity, therefore, after 555 before Christ.  How do we know?  Reference is made to Darius, the king of the Persians.

    Content:  
    part 1 involves visions about the restoration of Jerusalem.  Part 2, our part, talks about future prosperity.  Maybe a slightly forgetable book.  I have not one line highlighted in my bible.

    Deny Myself and Take up a Cross Daily

    Ever since I can remember hearing this item I have felt discomfort and
    rejection.   I think there was some of this in my original decision to enter the Jesuits to be a priest in 1958.

    Certainly in those early years of Jesuit training, we practiced this.  We lived in silence most of the time, worked hard on the beautiful Jesuit farm at Grand Coteau, and we never went back to our original homes.   A really regimented monastic life, up at 5:00, lights out at 10:00, every day, month after month, year after year.

     Times have certainly changed and I have obviously changed.  Three comments about the idea of taking up a cross daily.

    First, it is a metaphor, a metaphor for self discipline.

    Secondly, the self discipline involves obvious things, let's say, three:

              Healthy eating, that is, watch out for salt, sugar, and fat or butter, the major seducer ingredients of fast food places, like McDonald’s.

              Exercise, that is, keep moving.  2 a days are coming for high
    school football players.  You want to see self discipline?  27 days from now I will join 15 thousand other wakos to ride across Iowa in a week, about 500 miles.  I’m exercising, getting in shape. 

              Next, take breaks, days off, vacation periods.  A day off a week
    or 3 once a month, as I do.   Contemplate and reflect during the
    breaks.  What?  My blessings & gifts & joys.  Number one, number two, and on.

    Thirdly, the goal?  Follow God’s invitation to be fully alive.

    Readings:

    Isaiah   53, 10-11,  The Lord was pleased to crush him.

    Psalm 33,    Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you

    Hebrews  4, 14-16, Let us approach the throne of grace.

    Mark 10, 35-45,  Whoever wishes to be great will be your servant.

    Isaiah:

    A review:  

    Authors: at least 3 because there are 3 distinct parts to Isaiah the book.    Today's author is number 2.

    Time of Composition: near the end of the Babylonian Captivity, i.e., ca. 555 Before Christ.

     Subject Matter: part 1 up to chapter 39, warnings about impending doom because of the badness of the people.  The remaining two parts are called the Book of Consolation, letting the people know that a more peaceful &:prosperous time is coming.     

    One exception: 4 Suffering Servant passages in writer number 2, plus today's passage.

    Today’s Selection:   Isaiah number 2.  Pretty nasty treatment being dealt to someone.    4 observations—         

              A. This chapter in 2 Isaiah is not included as one of the 4 Suffering Servant Songs, even though it presents the same theme.           

              B. The he, the servant that is talked about is

                        –for the Hebrews, the Jewish nation/people;

                        –for Christians, Christ.         

              C.  False Belief number 1?  The Jews thought Yahweh demanded suffering or sacrifice of valuable items ( e.g., sacrificial lamb, scape goat ) as payment for badness or for favors.   

              D.  False Belief number 2?  The early Jews & Christians believed that an original great sin had been committed by our ancestors & that sin could only be paid for by a human-divine hero, Jesus.  He had to be sacrificed to this god.  Or as the first line of our official reading says, “The lord was pleased to crush him with infirmity.”  

    Do you think God crushes people with infirmity?   Was there really an original sin?   Contemporary theology says no.

    If I don’t want to be 1st, do I have to be a slave?

    I want to talk today about being first and being a servant or slave.   Or if I don’t want to be first, do I have to be a slave?  I am uncomfortable with the either or.  I have seen good people get obsessed with serving.  Can there be a healthy middle ground?  I would say, yes, and it is self acceptance of myself as I am.   A story. 

    You all know that Rosemary & I love to ride our bikes around White Rock Lake.  We go south on the White Rock Creek Trail from Royal Lane.  The second bridge we go under is the bridge where David Stephens was killed Monday Mmorning, 7:45.   Then circle the lake clockwise with a break at the boat house at the south end, near the dam.  All together about 20 miles.

    Homeward bound from the boat house we use West Lawther Drive, a beautiful little lane running between the lake and gorgeous mansions. Lots of bikers use this road and walkers and runners use the path meandering along closer to the lake.

    There can be mini, spur of the moment competitions on this road among northbound riders like we are.

    One day I am cruising along Lawther, when I am passed by 4 young kids about 13 years old, 3 boys & a girl.  “Whoa,” I think, “How can these kids

    do this to me?”   “I am going to pace these kids.”  

     I discover that these kids are well coached by somebody.  They are drafting and they are changing leader every mile or so.  Plus, they are flying.  I don’t draft, but I stay behind enough.

    We fly under the bridge that is Nwst. Hwy and race up the White Rock Creek Trail.  I keep up with them, but don’t like it.  They are going too fast, especially on curves, doubly especially on curves that involve shaded tunnels under bridges, a bit like Walnut Hill.

    Finally, about half way up the trail to Royal Lane, I Iet them go.  I never see them again.

    I decide two things:

    1. I will not race with people on the White Rock Creek Path.  Too dangerous.  Both West and East Lawther Drives, okay.
    2. Give up trying to be a great biker or first.  I am a B level biker.  I am a B level athlete and a B level intellectual.  In fact, one of the therapeutic values of biking is that, just after I think I am hot stuff because I have passed some young dude in all his fine bike clothes, along comes someone, like a girl, who passes me like I am waiting at the DART station.

     Anybody not want to be first once in a while?  Be best in something?  Absolutely normal.  Look at sports, academics, appearance.  So does that mean I have to be a slave or servant?  Very tricky statement psychologically.

    2 Observations:

    1.  It is normal and okay to want to be first. I hope so.   Certainly I know kids at 75 who have it.
    2. When Mark says “servant” and “slave,” do you see Mark’s hyperbole, his exaggeration, and his use of infinite demand?   This is his literary tool to make a point. 
    3. From my experience, the danger is…  A person who is religiously obsessed, poorly trained, spiritually & psychologically insecure, or scrupulous, this poor person can take the servant idea to an extreme.  The motto is, “Always better to give than to receive.”  No way.

    I have known & worked with people with this mentality.  We had them in the Jesuits.  The person cannot allow anyone to do anything for them.  Sometimes it is called scrupulosity.

    For that matter, I have some of that stuff.  I don’t always like to be on the receiving end.  Giving and serving can be quite comforting.

    Spiritual health avoids extremes.  It helps me to accept myself as I am.  It also challenges me to make a difference in our world.

    On the one hand, how do you handle not being number one?  On the other, how do you help others healthily?

    Before you hear the first reading from the Book of Numbers, I want you to realize that this is part of a parable.  The people were complaining against God and Moses in the desert because of lack of water and food; and because of this complaining we are told that God has punished them with poisonous serpents. ‘Moses, ask God to take away the serpents!’ 

    Moses replies that the Lord wants them to make a bronze replica of the serpent and put it on the top of a pole.  If someone has been bitten and looks upon it [has faith in my words and quits complaining] they will live. 

    When we look upon the cross that has been lifted up [which means exalted] we no longer think of it in terms of punishment; but rather one of triumph. It has become a sign of our Faith.

    To continue the theme of the past few weeks, I suggest to you that the Scripture verse, ‘My yoke is easy and my burden is light,’ encompasses, ‘Take up your cross and follow me.’  

    John spoke to us two weeks ago about a mother who asked for his advice about one of her children, an overly active boy. Learning didn’t come easily for the boy.  The boy had his own, unique, cross to carry.  John didn’t carry the boy’s cross for him. Instead, he encouraged the boy to welcome his cross, to derive strength from it.

    Sometimes we encounter someone with a cross that would seem to be too heavy and too burdensome to be carried…and yet that person’s faith is so strong that they can say ‘thank you’ to it.  When that happens it should also bring us to our knees to say, Alleluia.

    No matter what our cross, we are to give thanksgiving, and it will be given back pressed down and over flowing.

    My dad never talked to my older brother or to me about college.  We had always worked in the summer, and each of us had saved some money.  We knew that when we left home we could be self sufficient.  After getting our class schedules my older brother got a job at a bar in Iowa City working a few hours every night to pay for his food during college.

    The yoke was easy, the burden light.  I followed the example he had given me a couple of years later, however the food that I ate was better and more plentiful. All through college I worked lunch and dinner at a sorority house a few blocks from the campus with three other guys. One of them was Tony Lazos—I realized after college that he had become my best friend. 

    I lost touch with Tony after college. He did a couple of tours in Vietnam and afterwards he started a couple of small companies. When he found out that I was working in Dallas he called to visit on his way through.  Time passed and we lost touch with him again.  About a year ago Judy found a story about him on the internet that was three years old.

    Cupcakes of The week to Mike & Geri, Mary Jane, Rob & Beth, and Tom & Lynda, plus others.

     

    He had eaten some tainted chicken and had caught a disease that left him a quadriplegic and on a respirator.   I tried to reach from the email location Judy had found; but three year had past and I received no reply from my emails. Four weeks ago I received an email the subject of which was Chi Omega Waiter.  It was from Tony.  He is still a quadriplegic; but he’s off the respirator.

     This is his testimony, ‘Faith in our Lord, Jesus Christ is my foundation, my strength.’ He had built his foundation on rock.  Some friends of his in California had gotten him a voice activated computer, and he had found me in Dallas a second time.  We have been conversing with one another by email 3 or 4 times a week this past month.

    Sometimes I send him a photo; other times we share a remembrance. Tony remembers washing dishes this way, ‘Since we had to run across campus to make it to the Chi O house for the noon mean, we made darn sure that washing dishes was fun.’ 

    I’d like to send him another picture this week, and I need your help. I’ve brought with me some cards to spell out, ‘We love you, Tony Lazos!’  And I was hoping that before we sing our final song this morning that you will join with me to hold up the letters that spell out this message to him.  Please, someone remember to take a picture and send it to my email address.
