Giving Back

Psalm 8 is one of my favorites because it says that with all the beauty of creation around us, the heavens, the stars, still even more beautiful is the human being.  Last week on Hilton Head Island I saw this in a few surprising ways. 

First, did you know that at night the island has no street lights?  As you ride around the little lanes, it is dark and there is the sensation that you are out in the boonies, which I liked. The island is heavily forested with live oaks and pine, even around the houses. The reason for the darkness is turtle migration. The turtles won’t come where there is a lot of light. 

As much as this struck me, the next two things struck me more. They both touch on projects we as a community believe in and support. The first has to do with Habitat for Humanity, one of our favorites. Not only is there an active Habitat chapter on Hilton Head, but there is an all female chapter. The island has a number of retired & semi retired people. The women had helped with the local Habitat projects and decided they wanted to have their own group. 

As a group they determined to reach out even beyond the island. Consequently, the women took themselves and their generosity to Ireland, of all places, and there they built a number of Habitat houses. They are still quite active, according to Rosemary’s sister. 

The other phenomenon that struck me.  Many of the 50 thousand full time residents on the island are retired professional people. They have free time and are ready to contribute it to the community.  Many of the retirees are doctors and nurses. 

They have set up their own clinic. Similar to the Collin County Adult Clinic we support, all the staff are pro bono, working for free. Dissimilar to our clinic, which is able to open only one night a week, Thursday, the Hilton Head clinic is apparently open seven days a week.This astounded me, because I know how difficult it is for Julia & Al and all the staff here in Plano to open even one night a week. 

I’ve visited Clare & Joe probably four times over the past few years. I have ridden a bicycle over numerous shady roads and bike paths through the neighborhoods. This visit I got a look behind the facade. I am impressed. These folks, even in retirement, are giving back, through Habitat and through their clinic.

    The Baptism of the Lord – Introduction to the Readings

     Our second reading from Acts of the Apostles deals with what I will call a tipping point of major proportions, namely the account of how St. Peter understood that the Good News was not just for the Jews but also for all peoples.  We have just a short section of the whole story; it is about the baptism of Cornelius and his family.   It is also the last sermon which we have from St. Peter. 

     Prior to the section we read today there were two visions, Peter had a vision of all kinds of animals being lowered from the heavens and heard a voice telling him to eat, but he protested that the animals were unclean, only to hear God say that what He has made clean you have no right to call unclean.

     Cornelius also had a vision, which told him to send some men to get Peter in a neighboring town.  This double vision is what it took to convince Peter that it was okay to baptize gentiles without having them circumcised first!!  This was a major change for the early community.

     The other great tipping point is in the gospel, which gives us the account of the start of Jesus’ public ministry.  This is one of those rare accounts, which all four of the gospel writers agree on, and marks the transition from Jesus’ private life to his public life.

    By the way, our first reading is from a book we have been reading from for several weeks now, namely Isaiah.  As John has pointed out, there are different writers of this work.  Last week we heard from Isaiah 3 and earlier we had Isaiah 1.  Today our reading is from Isaiah 2, who introduces us to the Suffering Servant. 

    Why didn’t the later two writers use their own names?  For the same reason that you will see books with James Patterson’s name boldly on the cover, but if you look closely you will see that there is also another name below his.  The well-known name adds authority to the unknown author; true today and true over 2,500 years ago!

    The Baptism of the Lord – Homily

     If we look for signs of confirmation in the New Testament they are all over the place, in fact they are clearly mentioned in two of today’s readings.  We are told that we receive the Holy Spirit in Confirmation and that is what happens in Acts to Cornelius and his family as they are baptized and in Matthew’s Gospel to Jesus as He is baptized.  The Holy Spirit is very much part of baptism; while pouring the water the words said are “I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit”.

     So how is it that we now have two separate sacraments?  I was baptized when I was four days old and confirmed when I was ten years old.  In the early church there was only the sacrament of baptism.

    But as the community grew and as the numbers who were joining grew – particularly after Constantine declared Christianity the official religion of the Empire, the bishops could not attend to all baptisms, both because of the large numbers joining and because their diocese were quite large. 

     In the Eastern Church, centered in Constantinople, the problem was solved by having the priest both baptize the candidate and confirm that action with the laying on of hands. 

    In the Western Church, centered in Rome, the bishops decided to keep the conferring to themselves, and so the practice grew that way of separating the sacrament of joining or initiation into two events.  What also helped speed up this process was St. Augustine’s position that baptism was needed to overcome the effects of Original Sin, if one wanted to enter into heaven.  Let’s not wait for the bishop to make his rounds for baptism!

     It is clear just from our readings today that the Holy Spirit is received at baptism.  What I would like us to focus on is this.  We are told that we receive the Holy Spirit at Confirmation- we become soldiers for Christ.  What does this mean to you and me here today?  I find some clues in today’s readings.  It was only after he was baptized and received the Holy Spirit that Jesus comes out from obscurity and begins his Father’s work. 

     It was only when the Spirit came upon both Peter and Cornelius, in our second reading, that there was a major change in the requirement for the membership of the early community.  One no longer needed to be circumcised, or no longer needed to be Jewish.  Membership was now open to the gentile world.  The Spirit was responsible; it gave these people the courage to step beyond themselves.

     At the beginning of mass today I quoted from Pope Benedict about the importance of quietness and reflection in our lives.  It is only if we have this quietness that we can begin to hear the promptings of the Holy Spirit which can call us to new actions.  I really believe that it was the Spirit that led me to this community and the courage to reactivate my priesthood after 33 years of silence.  What is the Holy Spirit saying to you?

  • Sunday Homily 11-9-08, Lateran Basilica

    Readings:  Ezekiel 47, 1-12; Psalm 46; 1 Corinthians 3, 9-17; John 2, 13-22

    Why the Lateran Basilica?

    If you are like me, when you heard that today we celebrate the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome, you want to say, "What??"  "What has that got to do with me, with my life?"  I even got a call from our man Federico asking if we were having our Mass at the Lateran Basilica today.  It would have been fun.

    I do not remember doing any research on this celebration in the past.  This is due partly, I discovered, to the fact that the celebration always takes place on November 9, which does not show up on Sunday very often.  My research did give me an idea, however.  Namely, that we are exploring our roots today, like we search out our family trees.  Today we explore an ancient, prominent ancestor of our religious family tree.  Two observations: the meaning & the story.

    1.  First, the meaning of 'basilica.'  In Roman times a basilica was a large rectangular hall where the Romans met for business or meetings.

    From what I can discover, when a church or chapel is designated by Rome a basilica, it is an honorary title, like a priest being named a monsignor.  There are five or six levels of basilicas & churches.  On the most elemental level is the church or chapel, like St. Mark's or All Saints.  Then comes a minor basilica.  This could be like the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City.  The first basilica in the U.S. is St. Mary's in Minneapolis and it is, I think, a minor basilica.  Above a minor basilica is the bishop's cathedral.  For instance, while Mexico City has the Basilica of Guadalupe, the Bishop's cathedral is in the Zocalo, the center of the city.  The cathedral may simultaneously be a minor basilica and it is where the bishop has his throne and special altar.

    Next comes the papal basilica, which has a throne & altar that only the pope uses and which is used by others with the pope's permission.  Then a major basilica of which there are only 4 in the world, all in Rome, Mary Major, Paul outside the Walls, St. Peter's, and our subject today, the Lateran. 

    Finally we have at the top, an arch-basilica.  One only in the whole world.  The Lateran.  Why?  Age & historical significance.

    2. The story.  In the time of the Caesars & Jesus the place where the Lateran is had two buildings.  One was a fort & residence for the special calvary that defended the emperor.  These guys chose to defend the emperor against Constantine around 300.  He, of course, won and destroyed their fort.

    Next to the fort was a palace owned by the Lateran family, the members of which worked as administrators in the government.  Constantine married a woman named Fausta and with her came the palace.  Constantine did not need it, so he gave it to the Christians to whom he granted freedom to worship in 313, a big date in Christian history.

    Legend had it that Peter had said Masses around the area and he had used a table that still existed 300 years later.  The Christians built a church where the fort was, placing in it the table Peter had used.  They used the Lateran palace as a residence. This church, therefore, became the first Christian church in the whole world.  It was not built over a tomb like St. Peter's or St. Paul's, but it had the table. 

    Around this same time along comes Constantine's pious mother, whom I mentioned recently, because she had discovered where Jesus' cross stood and built a church there, the Church of the Sepulcher. She also found what she thought were the steps in Pilate's house which Jesus had climbed for his trial.  She moved the marble steps to Rome and set them up in the Lateran, where they are today. This is around 313 A.D., the famous year. 

    Consequently, for the next 1000 years the popes lived in the Lateran Palace and used the church as their cathedral.  Want to know what happened at the end of 1000 years?  The Avignon Papacy: for about a century, 1300 to 1400, the popes lived in Avignon, France.  With two, sometimes three rival popes, this is a story worth telling, but another Sunday. 

    When the popes returned to Rome around 1400 they continued to use the Lateran Basilica as their primary church, the bishop of Rome's cathedral, but they lived at St. Peter's because the Lateran Palace had deteriorated badly in their 100 year absence.  The popes still reside at the Vatican Palace and still use the Lateran Basilica as their #1 Cathedral.

    The Lateran Basilica was sacked by the barbarians in the 5th century, destroyed by an earthquake in 900, burned twice in the 15th century, and last remodeled in 1730.  In the 10th century it was dedicated to John the Baptist, in the 13th century dedicated to John the Evangelist, and since it had also been dedicated to Christ, its official title as the mother of all churches in the world is the Lateran Basilica of Christ our Redeemer, John the Baptist, and John the Evangelist.

    So what?  What is this?  Churches or temples or sacred places go back to the dawn of our evolution as humans.  Outside Mexico City are the temples of Teotijuacan,'  whose builders not even the Aztecs of 1521 seemed to know (the year the Spaniards & Cortes arrived).  In Egypt up the Nile River are the temples of Luxor, near which was found the tomb of Tutankhamen.  These temples go back 2000 years B.C. 

    Churches used to be sanctuaries.  You could run there if the law was after you.  Today the sanctuary is more spiritual and psychological. We go into such a sanctuary to calm our spirit, to converse with God, to regain perspective on life.  Granted these temples can equally be found outside, like in Yosemite.  I find there the same peace and perspective.

    I also think it is fun and fascinating to look back at our religious family tree, to get in touch with our Christian roots. 

    Today we celebrate an ancient ancestor in the Lateran Basilica.  It has been a sanctuary of peace for many of our ancestors.

  • Sunday Homily 11-29-09,1st Advent

    Readings: Jeremiah 33, 14-16; Psalm 25, To you, O Lord, I lift My Soul; 1 Thessalonians 3, 12-4, 2; Luke 21, 25-36

     

    FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT: Lighting the First Candle 

    Tony:  The Gospel of John speaks of Christ as the true light coming into the world. In commemoration of that coming, we light candles for the four weeks leading to Christmas and reflect on the coming of Christ.  It is significant that the church has always used that language—the coming of Christ—because it speaks to a deep truth. Christ is coming. Christ is always coming, always entering a troubled world, a wounded heart. And so we light the first candle, the candle of hope, and dare to express our longing for peace, for healing, and the well-being of all creation.

    Reflections on Readings for First Sunday in Advent, 2009

     

    As I mentioned at the beginning, the Gospel readings for this year will mostly come from Luke’s Gospel.  This Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles were both written by the same author.  It is worth noting that together they make up about 25% of the New Testament!

     

    So, who wrote them and whom were they written for?  The Gospel was most probably written around the year 80, so almost 50 years after the death/resurrection of Jesus, and 10 years after the destruction of Jerusalem.  The author was most likely a companion of Paul and a fairly well educated Greek speaker who was very familiar with the Greek version of the Old Testament.  The intended audience was primarily non Jewish early Christians.  And the books seem to show a nice continuity with the Old Testament.  The Gospel being about Jesus and then the Acts about the early Church. 

       

    In the opening of both the Gospel and Acts they are addressed to Theopholis, which in Greek means Lover of God!  Luke used both Mark’s Gospel and a source called Q, plus some independent material.  What he took from Mark he cleaned up and expanded upon.  This Gospel has a couple of very significant different focuses, namely the poor.  For instance in Matthew’s version of the Beatitudes we hear Jesus say “Blessed are the Poor in Spirit” whereas Luke has Jesus say “Blessed are you Poor”.

    Since we are approaching Christmas, it is interesting to compare the two versions of the Birth of Jesus which we have, namely Luke’s and Matthew's.  They are each quite different and when you look at today’s Nativity Scenes we have a combination of both!  Luke has Joseph and Mary going to Bethlehem, no room in the inn, and Jesus’ first visitors are the Shepherds.  Also the angel appears only to Mary!  Matthew on the other hand has Joseph and Mary living in Bethlehem, the Angel only appears to Joseph, and several times at that.  The Magi and the massacre of the innocent children and the flight into Egypt all happen only in Matthew and it is only on their return from Egypt that they relocate to Nazareth!

     

    Today’s reading comes from far into the Gospel.  Jesus has just gotten to Jerusalem and he is preaching each day in the Temple.  He has cleaned out all the stalls and moneychangers and he is foretelling the destruction of not just the Temple but all of Jerusalem.  It is very easy for Luke to put these words into Jesus’ mouth because he is writing about ten years after the temple and city have been leveled by the Romans.

    Readings: Daniel 7, 13-14; Psalm 93, The Lord is King, He is robed in Majesty; Revelation 1, 5-8; John 18, 33-27

    History of the Christ the King Feast: date, author, reason it was declared

    Date: Not during the early church, not during the time when Constantine made Christianity the religion of the Empire, not during the time of Luther & the Reformation, not during the time of Pius IX with the Italian Resorgiamento & his Infallibility statement (1870), but in 1925.  Fairly Recently.

    Author: Pius XI, pope 1922-39

    Trees 11-22-09

    Reason(s): at least 2 factors–The Times and Modernism/Secularism

    1.  The Times:

    a) End of WW I and build up to WW II   

    b) Mussolini & Hitler: the same year Pius XI became pope, Mussolini became prime minister.  By 1925 he had become a dictator.  The feast was to counter the dictatorship.

    2.  Modernism & Secularism:

    a) Modernism.  Despite being scholarly and pro-scientific methods, Pius XI was suspicious of biblical scholarship which questioned, for example, biblical inerrancy, the nature of bible miracles, the virgin birth, the resurrection, the atonement theory that God demanded his son suffer & die for a single sin by a human.

    b) Secularism coming out of the Enlightenment said that all people were equal, people should have a say in government as in democracy, and backed the separation of church/state, like proposed by Jefferson.

    Requiem for a Chevy Pickup

    When I first returned to Dallas after my time in East Africa, I determined that I would like to stay here and I would help to make Dallas a prettier place to live in by planting a few trees.  I started the fall of 1987 by planting on the Jesuit campus 88 trees plus.  The next year, with no more room on the campus, we went down Inwood Road and Willow.  I watered the trees out of buckets in the back of a Chevy Celebrity sedan.

    A year or so later I was using the school pick up.  I remember it conking out on us the Sunday we planted Royal Lane.  The red trailer was tearing up the transmission. 

    So I said to my Jesuit community brothers, "Hey, I am needing a new truck."  And they said, "Sure.  But you got to get the money yourself."  "Thanks, guys."  This was early in 94.

    I'm thinking to myself, 'where can I get all this money?'  I called Claude Smyth.  The former pastor of St. Mark's, Monsignor Claude Smyth.

    I ask him, since this is my community, may I contact some of the parish people whom I know?  He says yes, but then gives me a long list of things I cannot do under any circumstances, like no appeal at Mass, no public announcements on Sundays, and so forth.  "No problem," I say.  Then I proceed to contact maybe a dozen families I think can help me personally or who can spread the word quietly that I need help.

    The following Sunday, after saying the Mass in the main church at 9:00, I am walking the breezeway over to the cafetorium for the 10:30.  I run into Marcia Kolar and some other women passing out pages saying John Stack needs help to buy a new truck.  I walk into the cafetorium and there are plastic containers saying the same thing.  A few minutes later, Jim Herman, the lector is announcing the message from the podium.

    At that instance, guess who walked in.  'Walked in' is an understatement.  'Stormed in' is more like it.  He was taking the pages out of people's hands, running back & forth.  Anyway, after screaming at me for a while, I walk up the aisle and start the Mass. 

    The couple responsible for that event is here today.  Fred & Maureen.  I will always be grateful to you two.  In fact, just before Christmas, that year, 1994, I went over to the old Doran Chev. and paid $15,000 for that white truck I've used all these years to drag the red trailer around watering hundreds of trees.

    Today I hand over to Janette Monear and the TX Trees Foundation the keys to the truck & trailer, so the rig can continue to maintain baby trees around Dallas.  The truck was given to me for that project and now that I am semi-retiring, I hand over the truck to Janette.

  • Sunday Homily, September 15, 2013, 24th Ordinary Time C

    Readings: 

     Exodus 32, 7-11, 13-14,   I see how stiff necked this people is.

    Psalm 51,  I will rise and go to my father.

    1 Timothy 1, 11-17, I am grateful to him who has strengthened me.

    Luke 15, 1-32, The Prodigal Son (The Best).

    Exodus observations :

    What : a story, a long parable.  It has 2 parts, the exodus or exit from Egypt
    and the years wandering in the desert.

    Who: the work is all about Moses, but he
    did not compose it.  Rather, it was put
    together by a committee during the Babylonian Captivity, 555 before Christ.

    Subject: it appears that the purpose of the
    work was to encourage the people during the Babylonian Captivity.  It is not history and borrows stories from
    other cultures.  For instance, the
    parting of the Red Sea comes from a Mesopotamian creation myth and the 10
    Commandments resemble the Code of Hammurabi.

    Our Subject: The people have been bad, God is
    mad at them, and Moses defends the people.

    The Prodigal Son: A Work of Art

     This story is my favorite parable of the whole Bible.  Note one thing: this is story, not
    history.   The author carefully crafts
    his work of art to show how much God loves us unconditionally.  Let me give you three observations about the
    son, three about the father, and an extra three to show you how astounding this
    story is. 


    Torri 9-15-13

    The Beautiful Torri.

    First, the younger son:

     

            1.  He has no right to ask for inheritance.  None. 
    By asking he is saying he wishes the father and the older son dead.  A symbolic murder.  Father can kill him for this.

            2.  He works feeding pigs instead of asking for
    help from the temple.  This means he
    rejects the religious tradition and is considered a traitor not only to the
    family, but to the religion. 
     

        3.  So, as a horrible failure as a son of the
    family and a son of the religious tradition, he decides to return.  He makes up his little speech and heads
    home.  He is hungry to the point of
    dying.  Do this or die.  Many listening Jews would say, Die. 
     


    Buddy 9-15-13

    Buddy is ready, too.

    The Father: he actually commits as many crimes and sins as
    the son.

     

        1.    
    He runs down the road to
    the son when he sees him coming.  A very
    undignified action.  Outrageous.  People who emphasize conditional love point
    out that the son at least came back. 
    Despite this point, all the other elements of the parable point to a
    father with unconditional love.

            2.  He embraced and kissed the son.  Huge violation of Jewish religious custom and
    law.  By doing this the father positions
    himself outside of the religious & cultural community.  He is a reject like the son. 

            3.  He cuts the son’s speech off before he can finish, eliminating the last sentence, “treat me as you would one of your
    hired workers.”  And to make it worse, he
    orders the servants to bring the finest robe, ring, and sandals.

    The robe, the ring, and the sandals:

            1.  The robe: restores the son’s dignity. 

            2.  The ring: gives authority to the son, even
    equal to the father and certainly more than before he left.

            3.  The sandals: gives the son freedom.  Slaves were not given sandals so they would
    not run away.  The father is doubling the
    message he gave when he cut the son’s speech off before he could say the third
    part about being treated as a servant.

    A word about the older son, because we so often identify
    with him.  Two additional and final
    points.

            1.  That he tells his father how he feels.  Great. 
    In those days, it meant the father can kill him.  Today: communication.
     

            2.  What is his challenge: acceptance of his
    brother, his father, and himself; focus on gratitude for all he has; move from
    trying to be a good boy to loving?  Any
    one of these?  Or all?  All. 
     

    I apologize for so much data.  There is even more.  The point is that the story is a carefully
    crafted literary work of art that attempts to describe how totally unconditionally
    loving our God is.

  • Sunday Homily 4-11-10, 2nd Easter

    Readings: Acts 5, 12-16; Psalm118; Revelation 1, 9-10; John 20, 19-31

     

    Second Sunday After Easter – Reflection on the Readings

     

      

    Acts of the Apostles continues Luke’s Gospel by focusing on the spread of Christianity after the Resurrection.  The focus is first on the work of the Apostles and especially on the position of Peter, and then in the second half of the book, the focus is on the work of Paul. 

     

    Today’s reading from Chapter 5 comes immediately after the apostles have been brought before the Sanhedrin (the powers that be in the Jewish community) and told to stop their preaching about Jesus.  This is clearly a focus on the question “who will be in charge of the twelve tribes of Israel?  It also echoes back to Abraham and his being placed in charge of the tribes of Israel. 

     

       

    Remember, we are dealing with a group who have only the Old Testament to turn to in their attempts to make sense of all that they remember or heard about Jesus.  The power of God, working thru Peter is now much stronger than even when Jesus cured.  All people need for healing is to have Peter’s shadow pass over them.  There is no need for any physical contact!  Luke is here building up the importance of the “new leaders” of the people, the apostles.

     

      

     

    Our second reading is from the Book of Revelations; a much-misunderstood work, which I wish had never been included in the New Testament!  The work is primarily written in an apocalyptic style and its main focus is on the Roman Empire and the battle which the early Christians had with that entity.  There is nothing about the 21st century in this writing, nor about how the world itself would end!  The writer had no idea of a place called the USA nor the Soviet Union!

    Second Sunday After Easter – Homily

     

    Poor Thomas!  Actually thank God for Thomas!  It is comforting to know that someone else had doubts about the resurrection.  One week after our high point of Easter Sunday we are immediately given this wonderful little incident.  What I like about it is that it allows space for a very natural doubt to exist side be side with the faith in the Resurrection. 

       

    Back in 1968 a book was published called Introduction to Christianity by Joseph Ratzinger.  The book was a through examination of the Apostles Creed.  I remember being surprised when he talks fairly early on in the book about both the believer and unbeliever share, each in his own way, doubt and belief.  At the time it struck me as quite surprising.  Remember I was a naive seminarian in my early twenties and everything was rock solid!  Oh for those nice innocent days!!

    I have since grown up to recognize the truth in Ratzinger’s book, and in my own life.  If we remember back to the church before Vatican II we seemed to live in a world of certainty.  We were told exactly how everything was, now it seems things are messy!  It is what happens when you look behind the curtain, as happened to Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. 

       

    Doubting seems to be an integral part of our lives.  We would very much like the comfort of absolute certainty, and we do have it in a few things, like death and taxes, but for all the other areas of our lives we move from one doubt to another, all the while trying to either buy insurance or insulate ourselves in some other way against the uncertainties of life.  And belief in God is one area where there is lots of room for doubt, since God is mystery.

    So what can we begin to compare or faith in God to in our experience?  It seems to me that it is like being in love.  You meet someone and fall in love.  But the other person is free to respond or not.  The minute you force their response it is no longer love.  And so our most intimate of relationships with other humans is based on a hope that the other will respond and continue to respond.  If I think of God along those lines there is one major difference, God is going to love me, in this relationship; God is the only one taking the risk.
