Isaiah 22, 19-23,    I will pull you down from your station.

Matthew 16, 13-20,  You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my church.

Not only is Wendy back, but also her parents, her sisters, and their kids.

 

Matthew observations–

Biblical scholars agree that Jesus did not say what is in this little story.  Rather, the Matthean community shaped a highly stylized scene that attempted to establish Peter's position as leader of the new community.  The writer, because he wants to authenticate Peter, creates a scenario where Jesus makes Peter The Man.

Isaiah observations—

  1. Notice the chapter, number, 22.  Students, as you are, of Isaiah, my favorite, will immediately know this is Isaiah 1.  Chapter 1-39 make up Isaiah 1.  Isaiah 2 and 3 follow.
  2. Since it is Isaiah 1, you will know that the composer lived before the Babylonian Captivity, which took place around 555 before Christ.  Isaiah 2 is composed during the Captivity.  Isaiah 3, whom we had last week, works after the Captivity.
  3. Knowing that things were not good before the Captivity, you can guess that Isaiah 1 is critical of Israeli life.  You would be correct.
  4. Our selection today is both critical, “I will pull you down.”  But it is also talking about a better day.

In the presence of the angels I will sing you praise

When I told Rosemary a day or so ago that I wanted to talk about thanksgiving and did she have any ideas, ( She often has good ones.)  she says to me, “Why do you want to talk about thanksgiving ?  This is August, not November.” 

“You love this Psalm 138 almost as much as I and I can’t be grateful enough,” I responded.  Consequently, I have 4 delights I am grateful for this morning, and Rosemary reminded me of all 4.  They are an unexpected delight, a seasonal delight, a nocturnal delight, and a constant delight.

The first delight, then.  Parakeets, wild parakeets.

When Rosemary & I ride our bikes around the jewel of White Rock Lake, we begin at Royal Lane & Greenville, we ride south on the White Rock Creek path to NW Highway, and then we pass along the eastern shore of the lake to the very southern edge, where we stop for a break at a shady boat house.  Not always, but occasionally we are welcomed by a whole bevy of green parakeets.  These parakeets are famous in Dallas

This past week they welcomed us raucously every day.  It was especially a delight because we introduced Carrie to our little friends.   For this unexpected delight,  I give thanks.

 Secondly, the delight of a landscape.  The seasonal delight took place on the White Rock Creek path.  Rosemary & I are going north on the path back to our car.  We have passed under the Skillman St. Bridge and passed over a small scenic, steel & wood bridge heading for the tunnel under Abrams Rd. 

I glance up from watching the cement path and what I see was so touching, about 300 yards of the path winding ahead of me through dark woods, the rich green grass recently mowed, and, framed by the forest in a V image, the  sky so blue it took my breath away.  I wanted to stop.   For a seasonal delight, I give thanks.

The Minor Elevation.

 

The nocturnal delight took place after I had gone to sleep Thursday night.  Rosemary comes into the bedroom and whispers that the movie event for Souls Harbor came off really well and that the best part for her was that a whole bunch of our community was all there together.  I went back to sleep proud of you people. For a nocturnal delight, I give thanks.

The constant delight is the non-stop generosity and the always ready to help presence of John Cade and Mike Carrell.  What would we all do when Rosemary wants go on a cruise or go visit her sister in Hilton Head, if it were not for you two guys?

For you two constant delights, I give thanks.

What delights you are grateful for?

     Readings:  

     Daniel  7, 13-14,   His dominion is an everlasting dominion.

    Today we celebrate the last Sunday of the liturgical year with the Feast of Christ, King of the Universe. Pope Pius XI proclaimed this Feast Day in 1925 to counter the increasing nationalism and secularism of his time. The Christian religion and the church seemed to be losing ground to modern secular movements. As we’ve seen before and since, the Vatican tends to overreact, in this case by condemning so much of what was new in the world.

    As if in counterpoint, Jesus, in today’s Gospel reading, redefines the title of ‘king’ as being witness to the truth.

     

    A few words about today’s readings from Daniel and Revelations.

    Daniel is considered by some to be the 4th major prophet, after Isaiah,
    Jeremiah and Ezechial. However, his book has only 14 chapters and most don’t place him with the big three.

    Daniel describes events during the Babylonian captivity, about 600-550 BC. The book was probably compiled as late as the 2nd century BC during the rebellion against Greek ruler Antiochus IV.

    Authors were probably at least 3, since parts are written in Hebrew, Aramaic and a little in Greek. The book is rich in symbolism similar to Book of Revelation. Its most famous stories are about Shadrack, Meshack and Abednego, thrown with Daniel into the fiery furnace, and the story of Daniel thrown into the lion’s den.

     

    The Book of Revelation is the final book in the New Testament, written in Greek. Modern scholars think the book was written by an unknown author who was given the name John of Patmos to increase the authority of the book.

    As to when it was written: most say about 95 AD/CE during the persecution by the Roman Emperor Domitian, others say earlier during the persecution of the Roman Emperor Nero. In either case the book describes in dramatic allegory the battle between good and evil, with good winning out in the end.

    Jesus said: “My kingdom does not belong to this world.”

    Especially in the gospels of Mark, Matthew and Luke, Jesus gives umpteen descriptions of what the kingdom he proclaims as already present is all about.   And its not about lording it over others or about vengeance or greed or that place called ‘it’s all about me’.   It’s about the simple things children do naturally, like giving themselves fully to each moment,
    knowing what they like, giving and sharing (like Leo freely shared a bus with Cole a couple Sundays ago), receiving and taking graciously/joyfully, asking for what they need or want, and knowing how to say No to what they don’t need or want.

     These simple things are a stumbling block for many since they don’t seem big enough or important enough or memorable enough to count for a lot.

     

    In Mark, Matthew and Luke there is the parable of the people bringing little children up to Jesus and Jesus’ friends trying to stop them. And then Jesus saying, “Let the little children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these children.”

    Every time I am with my grandsons I learn more about what it means to be real and connected with others. They are real and connect with me instinctively. Like Freddie clamoring for me, his Papou, asking me to be a ‘monster’ and chase him, later, as he and we are enjoying his birthday cake, calling me by my name, John, later asking me to be the one who puts him down for a nap and tell him a story as he snuggles in my lap, later still playing with me with his new toy train.

     

    The question I leave us with today is twofold: what do we learn from the children around us? And how does what we learn help us live in the kingdom Jesus says is here?

    Exodus observations :

    What: After two weeks in the first book of the Bible, today we move to the second. The book basically tells the heroic struggle of Moses to get the Hebrew people out of Egypt, where they had gone because of the drought in their land some decades or centuries before. 

    Author: The book is about Moses, but he is not the author, as was thought for centuries. Instead, it is a compilation.

    My Dearest Genevieve, are you playing for us this morning?

     

    When:  Take a guess.  Yes, during and after the Babylonian Captivity, 555 before Christ.  Why now?  To help the Jewish tribe stay together.  Biblical commentators will say this is the most important book in the Bible.  Why?  Cultural history gives identity, especially one that goes from tragedy to triumph.  Plus, the writers, the priests-Levites, emphasized that God considered this tribe to be The Tribe.

    Today’ selection: an amusing story about how the Jewish people are bummed out with Moses for taking them out of the so called cushy slave life of Egypt into a desert with no water and no food.  

    Recommendation for Lent: Read Genesis and Exodus.  Interesting stories.

    Life Giving Water

    This morning I would like to mention 3 comments about John’s gospel that contemporary Bible scholars make.  Then, proceeding from the general observations, I would like to look at today’s gospel and especially the play on water.  Is it symbolic maybe?  Of what?

    Hi, Kevin, thanks for all your help.

     

    Observation 1: 3 writers can be identified as contributing to the gospel of John.  The 3 authors worked over a period of 25 to 30 years, up to around 90.

     Secondly, the figures in the stories are literary creations, perhaps built around certain people.                                                                                                         

    Thirdly, the words that Jesus uses are not just recordings, but words composed by the writers to convey a message or a symbol, like water.

    Which leads to our selection from John this morning, the Samaritan woman at the well. 

    She is talking about ordinary well water.  Jesus is talking about symbolic water, living water that gives life to the spirit.  

    I would propose this life giving water takes all sorts of forms.  For example.

    Remember the first time we had our penitential rite?  When Mike proposed the idea at a team luncheon I confess I was a bit skeptical.  I was thinking, ‘Nobody is going to want to do this.  More focus on sin.’  This is why I don’t like Lent, the endless focus on sin.  What does the ordinary Mass always begin with?  Focus on me a sinner. 

     Was I pleasantly surprised!  In fact, that penitential rite was pure water to my spirit.  I was humbled and touched.

    So, events can be life giving water, people can be life giving water.  Put them together and my spirit is moved. 

    Last week in Hilton Head we had Rosemary’s two sisters and husbands.  We celebrated a little Sunday Mass in the living room.  I was moved to tears.  I could hardly talk.

    This book with 28 chapters basically tells the story of what happened to and in the Christian community after Jesus died.

    Resurrection

    Want to know what Resurrection looks like?  Let me give you a couple of pictures. 

    As you heard me mention at the beginning of our celebration this morning, I went to the Circle R Ranch in Flower Mound Saturday morning for a picnic titled, For the Love of the Kids.  There are two of these picnics a year.  One takes place around Thanksgiving when busloads of kids come for a picnic with horse rides, hay rides, bounce houses, face painting, dancing on a stage, and visits from Superman, Batman, Santa, and others.  It is enormous, a couple of thousand kids.

    In April the picnic is for handicapped kids.  They come with their families, maybe a hundred or more yesterday.  It is wheelchair friendly.  I have my favorite job.  I stand at the entrance, usually with Beth, and welcome everybody.  I am always touched by something special, some resurrection moment.

    So here I am yesterday registering an hour before the kids arrive.  I walk into the big pavilion and unexpectedly the first resurrection moment hits me.  You will never guess what it is.  It is The Community.  I’ve already seen Kevin, Kerry, and Joe at the registration desk.  But when I enter the pavilion I see brown shirts of Bona Responds everywhere.  The first Resurrection moment.  I was so proud to be part of this community.

    Just take a guess. Yep, our beloved Gerwer gang at 7, believe it or not.

     

    Later, Beth, I, and another lady named Lindi are at the welcome lane into the pavilion.  Families are starting to come in, many pushing wheel chairs, but all with kids handicapped in some way.  Along comes a family with a little blond girl about 5 or 6.  I am saying hello and welcome to everyone.  The little girl comes right over to me and holds up her arms.  I gulp, pick her up, and hold her.  I did not want to ever let her go.  Another Resurrection moment.

    A little later a Hispanic mother comes up pushing her son in a wheel chair.  We chat and I look closely at the boy, who is about 12 years old and very nice. What I see is that he has a white sweat shirt that says “Jesuit.”

     Well, of course, that starts a conversation, while I hold the boy’s left hand in my left hand.  I’m on his left.  He is tuned in but not speaking, just watching me sort of fondly.  Finally, I reach over with my right hand and caress his soft cheek.  He gives me the most beatific, gentle smile that I was almost in tears as we parted.  A third Resurrection moment. 

    I left Circle R in a zone of greater peace, gratitude, humility, and awe.

    2 Maccabees Observatons :

    What :  another reading  from one of those unique dozen extra books.  A history of the Maccabee family.   This is the only time in the 3 year cycle
    this book is used.  Perhaps it is only
    used to support in some way Luke’s gospel about the wife of the 7
    brothers. 

    Date :  around 200 before Christ.

    Subject: In order to
    emphasize how God appreciates faithfulness, the author describes in vivid
    detail the torture and murder of 7 brothers who refused to eat pork.  I wanted to read the whole story, but it is
    too brutal for public reading.  Check it
    out for yourselves.

     What to Die for

    I want to talk this
    morning about an event that took place 24 years ago, November 16, 1989.  This Friday is the date.  I was back in the States about 2 years at
    this time. 

    The event I’m talking
    about happened in the early morning of November 16, on a Jesuit university
    campus, called Universidad Centroamericana, UCA for short.  This is a Jesuit university just like many others
    you know of, U. of San Francisco, St. Louis U. Fordham, Georgetown, Marquette,
    and the Loyolas.  This university is in
    San Salvador, El Salvador.

    There were 6 Jesuits
    home that night, plus a housekeeper and her daughter in a rear apartment.  All was quiet.

    Suddenly about 12:00
    there was a great commotion at the door of the residence, lots of yelling and
    banging.  The, Jesuits, thinking the door
    was going to be bashed in,   opened the door and in burst about 40 soldiers
    in camouflage and heavily armed.

    Continuing to yell,
    the soldiers went room to room, busting down doors, smashing windows, storming
    around, and ultimately dragging the 6 Jesuits out into their interior
    patio.  Even the housekeep and her daughter
    were dragged into the patio.   Can you
    imagine the fear?

     

    For an hour the
    storming around and the noise continued. 
    Then, a bit after 1:00, witnesses outside said shots began.  Each of the 6 Jesuits and the two women had
    to lie on the ground on their stomachs. 
    One by one they were shot in the back of the head and left.

    years before this, on March 24, 1980, a similar event had happened in the same
    country, El Salvador.  Archbishop Oscar Romero was shot by a single
    assassin in the middle of his Mass in a chapel at a hospital in San Salvador.

     

    The
    same year three American nuns and a lay woman volunteer were all killed on
    their way to the airport one evening.

    I talk about this this
    morning because, first, it still moves me and the anniversary is coming this
    Friday.   Secondly, I talk about it
    in reference to the 7 brothers who died rather than eat pork. 

     

    Question:
    what would you die for?

    Two
    observations.

     

    First,
    what these Jesuits died for is something really worth dying for.  I can imagine all of us doing this, dying for
    people dear to us.  The people dear to the
    Jesuits were the poor of El Salvador, especially those abused by the military
    dictatorship. 

    Secondly,
    while the 7 brothers showed heroic courage along with their mother, that they
    were going through this because they thought God told them they should not eat
    pork is just sad.  The don’t eat pork law
    did not come from God, but from Jewish elders and priests. 

    At
    the time it may have been a health instruction. 
    But religious people set this instruction up, not God.   Watch
    out.  Religious leaders lay lots of loads
    on people and say that God demands this. 
     Remember the prohibition to eat
    meat on Friday?  You could go to hell for
    this.

    I
    would propose that we all die, that is, give our life for something or
    someone.   Teachers give their lives for
    their students.  That is what the Jesuits
    did.  Parents give their lives for their
    kids.  Coaches, like my friend Frank,
    give their lives for their kids.

  • Sunday Homily 4-12-09, Easter

    Readings: Acts 10, 34-43; Psalm 118 (This the Day the Lord had made; let us Rejoice and be Glad); Colossians 3, 1-4; Mark 16, 1-7 (from Saturday night readings)

    Easter Mass 4-12-09

    Acts: 

    Author: Most likely Luke, who wrote the Gospel with his name and who followed and copied some of Mark's material. 

    Date: ca. 70-100 A.D., therefore ca. 40 years after the death of Jesus. 

    Subject: the ministry of Paul & the 12 Apostles after the death of Jesus.

            Chapters 1-8 deal with the Resurrection, Ascension, & Pentecost (Holy Spirit)

            Chapters 8- 28 deal with Paul's conversion & ministry.

    Today's selection: Two visions/dreams have just occurred:

            1. Cornelius, a captain in the Roman army and a Gentile, has a vision in which he is instructed to go to a town called Joppa and talk with a man named Peter.

            2.  Peter has a vision in which a sheet held by its 4 corners comes down and is full of all kinds of animals.  A voice says, "Eat."  Peter refuses because of the law of ritual impurity, i.e., some animals are ritually impure and it is prohibited to eat them.  But the voice insists.  At this point three of Cornelius' people arrive and invite him to come to Cornelius' house.  This vision symbolizes that even Gentiles who are ritually impure are invited to the new Christian community.

    Our selection takes up just after Peter arrives are Cornelius' house, finds a group of Cornelius' friends, is invited to speak to them, and he begins.  The following is what he says to the group of Gentiles gathered in Cornelius' house.

    Meaning of the Word Easter: the origin of the use of Easter seems lost in history.  Probably not from Latin, which uses pasqua.  Probably not coming from a German goddess of spring, which some have suggested.  May have emerged from early Celtic converts (British Isles), who wanted to use their own words for Christian feasts, rather than Latin words.

    The Easter Event Today

    I think it was last Tuesday morning.  I had come out into the yard in front of our house to let Aviana do her business.  Suddenly around the corner comes a little black Prius which I recognize.  The window comes down and one of Aviana's favorite neighbors stops to give her a little loving. 

    The neighbor who is so friendly asks how we are all doing and was I getting the spring weddings going.  I said that, yes, we had weddings for all the weekends of May except one and that one weekend we had two weddings.  I also mentioned that I was looking forward to a fun Easter Sunday with an Easter egg hunt for the kids.

    She then mentions that Lent has passed by in a flash and that she has paid no attention to it and really did nothing special.  Am I hearing maybe some minor Catholic guilt?  I'm also thinking to myself that this woman is just terrific as she is.  She does not need to do anything special for Lent.  I mean she loves Aviana and she is friendly to me.  That in itself is extraordinary.  But she also goes back & forth in front of our house it must be a dozen times a day ferrying her 4 kids to numerous events.  On top of that, she teaches at SMU. 

    I thought about this friendly lady as I started looking around in my daily life for a recent Easter event.  You know what I think an Easter event is.  It is something or someone which gives me greater peace and life. 

    Good Friday 1, 4-12-09

    Initially as I looked back over the past six weeks since we started Lent, I thought of the week I spent in Galveston with the 50 kids from St. Bonaventure U. in Buffalo, NY.  That was a dramatic Easter event for me. 

    Way back I had talked about making Lent a time of service and greater sensitivity.  I hit the jackpot with the Galveston trip.   The generosity and desire of those kids to donate their spring break to service gave me a ton of peace and life.  I still feel the effect of them in my life.

    I am aware that I lucked out with the Galveston trip.  Just to be able to get away for the week.  Like Rosemary who is working now in downtown Dallas, the majority of you cannot walk away from your job for a week.  However, if Lent has passed you by quickly and you look back with any guilt, I would say, "Get rid of it." 

    The sensitivity begins now.

    Unprofitable Servants?  Faith the size of a Mustard Seed?  

    Wow!  What do you think when you hear this reading?  How do you feel?   Got faith enough to remove a mulberry tree?  I need the faith to remove an overgrown Live Oak tree out of our back yard.  I, for one, don’t get good vibes off of this reading.  And many of the other readings we have had this year from Luke.

    Therefore, I would like to dispute with Luke.  From my psychology experience, am I seeing a man with a slightly split personality?

    Hi, Nora, You look very pretty this morning.

     

    While Luke has the touching Nativity narrative and the magnificent story of the Prodigal Son, and, even, the lost coin and lost sheep, look what else.  

    We have had the master and his debtors, leave your parents and take up your cross, the narrow gate that only a few get in.  Likewise, be ready because he comes like a thief when you are not ready and guess what happens—you go straight to hell!

    You know my bias.  I believe in a God who is unconditional, unconditional in his love for us.  Forget about hell.

    Hi, Harper, you may tell your grandmother that we can repeat the homily for her any time, since she missed part of it.  And we know she hates to do that.

     

    As another alternative to this discouraging passage I would propose a simple, favorite line of mine from the Old Testament and from one of the Minor Prophets, Micah, only 7 little chapters.   

    Says Micah in chapter 6 verse 8, “The Lord has told us what is good.  What he requires is this: to do what is right, to love unconditionally, and to live in humble fellowship with God.” 

    Initially this may sound pretty easy.  However, is it always easy to do what is right?  Like to stand up for peace when everyone wants war?

    Easy to show constant love?  To troublemakers, to other races, to other religions, to the political candides in this fall’s elections?

    To walk in humble fellowship with our God?  Can this fellowship eliminate fear, fear that I am headed for hell? 

    How do you do what is right, love unconditionally, and live in humble fellowship with our unconditionally loving God?
