Rosemary's Blessing of the Week

May the sun shine bright on your joyous days

And the rain refresh you through peaceful nights

May summer show God’s wondrous ways

And prepare you for heaven’s great delights

And till we meet there

May the God of summertime

Hold you in the palm of her hand

  • Sunday Homily, August 5, 2007, 18th of the Year

    Readings: Ecclesiastes 1,2; 2, 21-23; Psalm 90; Colossians, 3, 1-11; Luke 12, 13-21

Eccllesiastes: this book contains the thoughts of the "philosopher," a man who reflected on how short and contradictory human life it.  He could not understand the ways of God.  Nevertheless, he advised people to work hard and to enjoy the gift of life as much and as long as they could.  In our selection you will see how he is pessimistic & depressing.

I’ve chosen to expand the reading to give you a better view of his style.

The Gift: Celebrate it and Share it

Last Saturday evening our group of seven set up a campsite above the shore of the second of a group of three High Sierra lakes ten thousand feet high. The lakes are called the Rae Lakes. The next morning we planned to climb 12,000′ Glen Pass, which was standing straight up in front of us. The Rae Lakes are exactly at the line where trees cease to grow very well, so we were camping on somewhat open granite & shallow soil.

Our menu that night was beef stroganoff and because we always had more than we needed, we invited three women at the neighboring campsite, a mother & daughter and another young woman.  The two younger women turned out to be teachers in the San Francisco area, teaching mostly underprivileged & handicapped children.  The girl traveling by herself had once even brought a group of 7th graders out to the wilderness. The three were eventually planning to climb Mt. Whitley and then exit.

The next day Rose spent a lot of time climbing & talking with the girl who was hiking alone.  As a result, the two became good friends and discovered that they shared a number of the same dreams, to teach kids and to teach about nature.  The girl even recommended a neat little Italian restaraunt in Fresno, our town of arrival & departure.

Our readings today all seem to indicate that life is futile and useless.  Why do anything?  Just eat dirt.

    Two observations on this.

First, life does not have to be looked at as useless.  It can be seen as a gift.

Secondly, the gift can be celebrated and shared with others.

Let me work backwards.  I was impressed with those women because they were into sharing the gift.  The two young girls were teaching.  The mother came into the wilderness to share the gift with her daughter, even though the mother did not look like the backpacking type.

We also saw numerous scout troops during our nine days.  Once we ran into a group of fourteen, about four adults and ten boys & girls about 15 or 16.  When we asked them who they were they said they were a camp.  We think they were taking a group of troubled teens on a wilderness trek.  This is sharing the gift.

Before I share it, however, I think I got to celebrate the gift.  Which is exactly what we were doing in the High Sierras, and do every year.  Which is what we do here on Sundays.  We celebrate the gift of life.

How do you celebrate the gift and share it?

  • Sunday Homily 4-12-10, 4th Easter

Readings: Acts 13, 14, 43-52; Psalm 100, We are His People, The Sheep of His Flock; Revelation 7, 9, 14-17; John 10, 27-30

Acts:  a brief resume of what Tony has already explained, using the structure of who, what, when, and today's reading.

Who wrote: Luke, who wrote the Gospel.  He was a Greek speaking Gentile convert to Judaism.  He writes for Gentile Christians.  Writes about Paul, but did not know him nor his letters.

When: Big question.  Before or after 2 momentous events–

70 C.E: the Jews rebel against Rome.  Rome smashes them and destroys the most precious temple.  End of priests, beginning of rabbis.

88 C.E.: the Jewish Christians who have been worshiping in the temple or synagogue for decades split off.

What about: story of spread of Christianity after Christ's death.  History or not?  Big question.  Idealized history?

    Mass Begining 4-25-10

Today: Paul & Barnabas scolding the Jews and affirming the Gentiles.  Is Acts pro Gentile?

    Revelation: a strange book

Some of my old Jesuit confreres were convinced the author(s) of this book was on halucinagens, undergoing an LSD trip.  What do you think?

    Sacrament of the Sick 4-25-10

    The Good Shepherd

Want to know what a good shepherd looks like?

There is a couple.  They are celebrating 25 years of marriage.  They met in college in Pennsylvania.  Good kids.  The girl, Donna had spent a summer overseas doing service work in Calcutta.

Know who else started out in Calcutta?  Mother Teresa.

The guy, John had also been doing summer mission work with the Glenmary Home Missionaries.

    Offertory 4-25-10

So they got married and planned to have a family.  They tried and waited.  The news: they could not have kids.  So, one thing led to another and they adopted.

They adopted Rosa, a baby from an orphanage in Mexico.

Then they adopted Natalie, a baby from Guatemala.

Then David, a baby from a local foster care family.

Then they adopted a 12 year old.  Maria Elena came from the same Mexican orphanage as Rosa.

They had been living in a house in Philadelphia.  They moved to a church basement.  Then to an empty convent.

All the while they continued adopting kids.  Just could not say no.  Donna was home schooling the kids.  John was working as an independent contractor—until they reached 11 kids.  Then he quit his job.  He was needed too much at home.

With the number of adoptions rising they found a 7 acre farm in south east Pennsylvania.  Here they could attempt more self-sufficiency.  They also were granted status as a foundation and took the name of St. Joseph House.

    CCAC 4-25-10

Today on the farm they have somewhere between 17 and 20 kids under their roof.

How have they managed over these 25 years and 20 kids?  With the help of Catholic communities like ours right here.

What kind of good shepherd are you?  Are we?

I found the story of John & Donna Kurtz in the March edition of The Anthony Messenger.   There is a picture of the whole bunch on the cover. http://www.americancatholic.org/Messenger/Mar2010/Feature1.asp

  • Sunday Homily for November 25, 2018, Christ the King, B cycle

    • Intro to Readings:

Psalm 103 – In Psalm 103 we hear the psalmist’s description
of God. This same verse is also in psalm 86 and 145, and in Exodus

Ch 34 and Jonah Ch 4. It’s no wonder that, hearing these words,
thanksgiving became one of the hallmarks of Christian communities.

First Corinthians: Ch 1 Paul opens his letter to the
Christian community in Corinth by giving thanks for the
abundance of spiritual blessings they have received.

Luke, in his Gospel, Ch 17, highlights how thanksgiving is
the way to acknowledge blessings in our daily lives.

      Homily:

Marv Knox is field coordinator for Fellowship Southwest, a
ministry that provides services for people in the Rio Grande
Valley, including refugees at the border, kids in public schools,
disaster relief, and helping people avoid the unjust system of
payday loans. His article in the Morning News on Friday inspired
me. He wrote of the similarity between giving thanks and counting
blessings. He proposes counting our blessings, as we do here
every Sunday. People pretty much agree we’ve been living
      through hard times.

It’s clear we are a nation divided. Some are still waiting to
know the outcome of political races; when people are
divided almost 50-50, counting and re-counting votes takes
      a lot of time.
We’re still hearing of the forest-fire body counts, with
hundreds still missing and unaccounted for.
Refugees the world over, and at our own border, are hoping
and asking for safety from danger.
The chaos in Europe and confusion in our western alliance.
Experiencing the results of global warming, with increased
intensity and frequency of storms, floods and fires.
The dropping and shaky stock market.
The threat again of nuclear aggression from North Korea.
      These hard times, of course, are societal, shared by all;
there are also the personal hard times we each live with,
e.g., living with my sisters’ hurt and inability to speak with
one another. You know your hard time—the anxiety, hurt,
sadness or trauma you live with.

Counting blessings moves our focus from the dark to the light.
It helps us see what’s going right, even while we know much is
      going wrong.

Counting blessings turns our attention away from ourselves to
acknowledge the helpful actions of others.

Counting blessings gives us hope. As we count blessings—
and give thanks—we see that God is unchanging—ever faithful,
      loving, and abounding in kindness.

Today, like every Sunday, we counted blessings in our lives.
Imagine, rather than writing his letter to the Christian community
in Corinth (Greece), Paul wrote to this Christian community,
saying: I give thanks for your openness to God. There’s no end to
what has happened in you; it’s beyond speech. The truth of Jesus
has been clearly verified in your lives…. God will never give up on
      you. Never forget that.”

So: How have you opened your eyes and minds to see and count
      blessings in your life?
