True?

I believe there is an important distinction to be made between religion and spirituality. Religion I take to be concerned with belief in the claims to salvation of one faith tradition or another–an aspect of which is acceptance of some form of meta-physical or philosophical reality, including perhaps an idea of heaven or hell. Connected with this are religious teachings or dogma, ritual, prayers and so on. Spirituality I take to be concerned with those qualities of the human spirit–such as love and compassion, patience, tolerance, forgiveness, contentment, a sense of responsibility, a sense of harmony, which bring happiness to both self and others.

Acts 2:  All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their property and possessions and divide them among all according to each one’s need.
1 Peter 1:  Although you have not seen him you love him; even though you do not see him now yet believe in him, you rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, as you attain the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
John 20:  Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.”

John Cade’s Easter Homily:  04-05-26 Homily Easter Sunday

In the end, it will always be what we have done to assure those who have less than we do the same quality of life we have that will count most. It won’t be how much money we made in the doing of it.

    True?

The mantra we frequently pray, "Come, Lord, Jesus, come," means somehow in Advent we have to make sure we are hungry, that is, that there is room inside us for "more."  Who else do I need to "take in" my heart and my mind?

Like Jesus, we can give the God who dwells in us a way of coming to human expression in the way we are neighbor, the way we are in solidarity with those who are different from us or who have less than we, the way we put an end to divisions, and the way we are more expansive and inclusive in our loving, forgiving and giving.

As we live this holy season of Advent, let us remember "God comes to you disguised as your life."*
