Thanksgiving, 2019-11-15

Guess what, Everybody.  Two Sundays and we celebrate my most favorite holiday, Thanksgiving.  To get us into the spirit I want to describe my three biggest blessings of the year.

The Candle Lighting Ritual.

 

Blessing 1 is my health.  My whole life I simply assumed that I would always be healthy. 

Trouble started last Thanksgiving when Rosemary, Aviana, & I made our annual visit to Rosemary’s sister’s in Hilton Head.  I could hardly walk, even with a cane.  My routine doctor sent me to an orthopedist.  I’ll never forget the visit.   He pointed to his computer screen, said, “I can fix this.”  He even said he had one opening before the New Year.  Did I want it? 

Wow, did I want it!  I had lumbar stenosis, a pinched nerve in my lower back.

While I was dealing with this my parkinson decided to get more active.  My neurologist said exercise, box, work out on ellipticals, anything to get my arms swinging.  He gave me a pill to take 3 times a day. 

We had a May cruise in the North Atlantic & I was pretty nervous, even just with the trans-Atlantic flight.  I took a cane.  I never used it.  Everything improved.  No dizziness, better coordination of my legs and arms. 

Which brings me to today and Thanksgiving.  I am grateful.

    Isaiah: We finished the year with the hopeful passages from the great book of Isaiah and we begin 2008 with another of the passages.  Remember these images were the dreams of people, probably men, who lived ca. 800 years B.C.

    I did it again, folks. 

    Rosemary & I have a custom when we are in our little bed & breakfast at Oaxaca, Mexico or in other places.  In the evening we put a bottle of wine, some peanuts, and maybe some cheese on a table in the tropical little paradise of a patio the Valencia family have in their house.  A bottle of wine on a table with a couple of glasses seems to draw people and we have some great conversations.

    When we arrived in Oaxaca this past Dec. 29, we followed our usual custom, set it all out and prepared to wait for people to come in from their day’s adventures.  I noticed that in a little alcove at the edge of the patio a lady in her mid 50’s was quietly sitting.  I walked over to her and invited her to have a glass of wine with us.  She declined. 

    When I returned to the table I mentioned it to Rosemary and she said she had already invited her, but that she had declined to her also. 

    Meanwhile, people drifted in and soon we had about half a dozen guests talking about their wanderings around Oaxaca, a beautiful little colonial town.  All the while we were at our  table the lady sat by herself in the alcove.  At one point her husband came up and sat with her, but never came over.  In fact, they did not even look at us. 

    So I did it.  I said to Rosemary something like, "Those people seem rather unsociable and stand-offish."

    And you know what happened.  The next day at breakfast we got to know them a little more.  They were from Vancouver, he French Canadian and she British.  They were shy, but proved to be quite warm and friendly once we got to know them.  In fact, they eventually became one of our favorite couples among a bunch of really interesting people.

    On one occasion they even surprised and impressed all of us because on their own, even without Spanish, they took a country bus out to one of the mountain ranges that surround the valley in which Oaxaca is, so they could go hiking.  We were impressed because not only was it a pretty adventurous trip, and they did not strike me as athletic.  But also they persevered with their hike even though the day they chose happened to be one of the coldest days I have ever seen in Oaxaca.  When they got off the bus in the middle of nowhere, they said the wind was blowing fiercely and eventually they ran into rain and snow.  Fortunately, they had rain coats, but not a lot of warm clothing, because no one expects cold in Oaxaca.  When they actually joined us around the table that evening they were celebrated.  Ultimately, I think they did not drink.

    I talk about this couple because they were for me something like the Magi.  We imagine them as kings, but in reality they would have more resembled anything but.  They are intended as symbols by Matthew, symbols of the non Jews, the ugly Gentiles, which is what we are.  In other words, surprise, surprise, Matthew wants to show that Jesus appeared even to these unsavory characters.

    This Vancouver couple was not unsavory in any way.  Just because they did not eagerly accept my invitation to a glass of wine, I did it.  I judged them negatively.  Judging the book by the cover again.

  • Sunday Homily 10-2-11, 27th Ordinary Time

     Readings:  Isaiah 5, 1-7; Psalm 80, The Vineyard of the Lord is the House of Israel; Philippians 4, 6-9; Matthew 21, 33-43 

    Sacrament of the Sick 10-2-11 

    Isaiah:

    • The biggest of the big 3 prophets not only because of the book's volume, 66 chapters, but because of the beauty of some passages.   The book is my favorite.
    • Time written: before the Babylonian Captivity (ca. 590) chapters 1-39 seem to have been composed by the prophet.  After the Captivity (ca. 540) at least two followers seem to have composed chapters 40-66.
    • Today's selection: talks about a vineyard worker who labors carefully to bring forth good grapes, but gets only weeds.  What does he do with the vines?  This story matches up with Matthew's parable.

    The Crazy Landowner 

    Every week when I read the Sunday readings for the first time, I have one of three reactions.  Once in a while I know exactly what I would like to say.  Other times I have not a clue.  And then there are the in betweens.  Today’s reading about the landowner with the vineyard is an in between for me.   

    There are all sorts of handles to grab onto.  Like what each component of the parable is a symbol for.  Obviously, the landowner symbolizes God, the son symbolizes Jesus, and the tenants could be the Jews or clergy or rabbis.

    Remember, too, Matthew is writing for both Jews and Gentiles.  He may be warning the Jews that they are going to lose it.

    I want to focus on the landowner and make two points. 

    The first point is that when you think he is crazy, you are right.  The landowner never gives up on his tenant people even to the point of being crazy.  Which means:  our God never gives up on us and always accepts us so much so that we think our God must be crazy.

    The second point.  To understand this it helps me to remember a story I connect with this parable and have told before.  Hang on.  This is it. 

    When I first started planting trees seriously in Dallas I started on the Jesuit campus in ’87 & ’88.  I planted 88 trees the first year and among those trees, I planted most of the trees along Inwood Road and along Willow, the small street on the south side by the playing field.

    A month or so after the planting, one of my trees was pulled out and thrown in the Willow creek ditch.  I was especially disturbed because the tree was exactly the first tree on Willow and would one day shade the bus stop.  So, I planted another.  This is like February.  Guess what.  It was pulled out and thrown in the ditch.

    What to do?  I did nothing all that spring and summer.  When October returned, I decided I would plant a special tree, a 10 gallon container tree, two times bigger than my normal trees.  People told me I was crazy.  And I agreed.  I planted the tree.  

    What happened?  Go by today and look.  You will see a gigantic, beautiful red oak shading the bus stop.  

    The second point of this parable: we are challenged to imitate the landowner, meaning we accept and help our neighbor and our people even to a point where others are saying, “That person is nuts, is crazy.”

    Hopefully, we all have the same success I had with the red oak.  Whether yes or no, we know, firstly, our God accepts me to a point of looking crazy.  And secondly, we are challenged to do the same.

    Observation & Homily from John

    Love for Kids: A few words about Love for Kids yesterday. Bill Hammond signed up a John Stack Ministries team for it. I met up with three others from our community—Rich, Cheryl, and Mike Carrell. We were assigned to help prepare lunches and manage the lunch line for about 900 kids and their adult guardians. Our team totaled ten volunteers plus the head honcho from Love for Kids. Some in our team were college students looking for a volunteer experience and they proved they were there to work. The team worked without a break for over two hours, and collaborated as a real team.

       Many of the kids expressed their gratitude. It was cute seeing their eyes scan the lunch boats for any differences, like some differences in cookie selection. Some kids said, “I don’t want chips; I want Cheetos” or “Where’s the drinks?” etc. I checked with our volunteers, and we all were highly honored to represent John Stack Ministries, loved our gig, and were happy to be able to stand strong for Bill.

    Homily:

    There are umpteen healing stories in the Bible (Old and New Testaments). Healing and forgiveness stories are at the core of the Gospel message. They’re mostly connected to forgiveness and reconciliation. They teach us to watch for the blessings that come our way daily; how different this is from that Christmas song, you better watch out cause Santa knows if you’re good or bad.

    The Good News invites us to watch carefully for life-changing blessings, rather than watch fearfully for threat and punishment.

    Recently I shared my family’s struggles over forgiving a family member for past mistakes. We suffer in a relationship of brokenness and distance.

    Another example from about 20 years ago gives me hope. It was when two of my sisters and I ganged up on another sister whom we thought needed to change how she related to the nursing home staff where our disabled older sister lived—basically to force her to do things our way.

    Happy Birthday, Tom.

     

    My sin was not being sensitive to how each of us is different, and so ‘gives’ in different ways. My blessing was to see on the long drive home how wrong I was in judging rather than accepting and forgiving. I returned the next weekend and asked forgiveness. In spite of her children’s advice to say no, she forgave me. Her gift of forgiveness and reconciliation was and is a great blessing in my life.

  • Sunday Homily 6-22-08, 12th Ordinary Time

    Readings: Jeremiah 20,10-13; Psalm 69; Romans 5, 12-15; Matthew 10, 26-33

    Jeremiah: one of the 3 great prophets along with Isaiah & Ezekiel.  He lives just before the defeat & destruction of Jerusalem 650 years before Christ.  He foretells the catastrophe, warning the Hebrews that their sinful ways will lead to destruction.  He lives to see the event, but also prophesies that the exile will be temporary and that one day the people will return to Jerusalem.

    Jeremiah was unpopular with the people because of his warnings.  Today's reading shows him bitter and complaining about the people.

    As Good as Sparrows, as Good as Aviana?

    In February, when we put our little dog Naomi to sleep after 15 years, Rosemary & I debated whether we would ever want to get another dog.  Putting her to sleep was one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life. 

    Around Memorial Day, however, Rosemary began to look on line just a bit.  Shih-tzus were our favorite, but we entertained other types of small dogs.   In fact, our vet had recommended a woman in East Texas who occasionally raised a litter of maltipoos, a mixture of maltese & poodle. 

    Last Wednesday we took a trip to East Texas.  We had two ladies to visit, the one recommended by the vet and another who raised shih-tzus.  On the way we debated: yes or no.  We decided to just look.  

    Well, so much for looking.  In fact, the hardest thing was coming home without one of each. 

    Behold Aviana, a maltese-poodle mix whose name comes from the air base north east of  Venice, where we visited Michael & Lydia on our spring trip.  The base is Aviano; we made it feminine.

    Do I have any doubts or reservations now that she is part of our family?  No, not one.  In fact, I am reminded every day why she is a special gift.  A couple of observations.

    Do you realize that she is not afraid?  I think she is like all of us when we are born.  When do we begin to be afraid?  I know how Aviana could become afraid.  If I treated her mean & rough, and abused her.  Matthew recommends that we be afraid not of the person who kills the body, but of the person who kills the soul.  I would suggest the word spirit instead of soul.  Abuse kills the spirit.  At the least it wounds the spirit.

    Yesterday I was working on line and Aviana was lying under my feet sound asleep.  Not on her tummy or on her side.  She was lying on her back with her legs and ears splayed out.  Talk about trust.  Lack of fear.

    Matthew says that we need not fear because we are worth more than many sparrows.  Am I worth as much as one Aviana? 

    Second observation is that I see the acceptance of God in the behavior of Aviana.  I saw it in Naomi.  I walk in the house and receive not just unconditional acceptance.  I encounter excited & joyous celebration.  I am amazed and touched.  We hear a lot about how we will be judged a sheep or a goat at the great roundup.  If I am lax, God will come like a thief in the night and hurl me into hell for being caught off guard. 

    My preference is to see the acceptance of Aviana as reflective of the acceptance of God.  She is another of those little creatures we talked about last week.  She is another metaphor or parable about God's acceptance of us as we are.

    Aviana is not afraid of us.  She amazingly trusts us.  Moreover, she accepts and celebrates us just as we are.

    Last Sunday Stack reminded us about how Moses told the people of Israel that they would have their own land promised by Yahweh.  And how after Moses’ death Joshua and others wiped out the Cannanite tribes who resided there, and just moved in.

    The theme today is that of healing.  During the week I was touched by two visuals of a lack of healing for people.  The first was the visual of a dead child lying on a beach in Turkey, whose family were trying to get from Syria to safety in Europe.  His family was one of thousands escaping from war torn Syria, escaping death by the King’s military, or by the rebel fighters, or by ISIS jihadists.  Newspeople often refer to them as ‘immigrants’–-yet their country is in civil war and there is hardly a safe place for anyone on any side.  They are refugees.  They leave everything behind.  They cross the Mediterranean in rubberized boats or rafts.  Many don’t even make it to the first stop in Turkey.  These thousands of refugees are leaving their homes, leaving their land, in search of a safe place for their families, for their children.

    The second visual that struck me this week was from a series of articles in the National Catholic Reporter on the ‘Doctrine of Discovery’ and its impact on people over centuries.  The ‘Doctrine of Discovery’ is found in papal bulls beginning in 1436; that’s almost 600 years ago.  One example is a papal bull from 1493, after Columbus’ ‘discovery’ of the Americas.  This papal bull gave Ferdinand and Isabella “full and free power, authority and jurisdiction of every kind” over almost all of the Americas, except for part of modern-day Brazil and a few islands.  Some say this was the beginning of international law as each succeeding papal bull would quote or reference those that came before.  When, in the late 1400’s discoverers were finding lands far away from Christian Europe, they found these lands occupied with non-Christian peoples, tribes and civilizations.  The papal bulls gave Christian discoverers full power and authority over all non-Christian peoples in these lands.  This meant the land could be claimed by the Christian discoverer (like for Spain or for France, etc.) and the non-Christian people could be enslaved, made to become Christian, even killed if they resisted.

    Fast forward to 1823.  This Doctrine of Discovery was legitimized in a ruling by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall.  His ruling maintained that Native Americans had the right to ‘occupy’ land, but not have full ownership, and that tribes were dependent on the federal government.

    So the two visuals that touched me this week were the thousands of refugees fleeing Syria, especially the little boy lying dead on the beach; and the millions of peoples in the Americas, Africa, the Pacific islands, etc., dispossessed of their lands, culture and religion, to a large extent due to a series of papal bulls and the Doctrine of Discovery.

    Thessalonians 4, 13-18 ,  The Lord will come down from heaven.

    Matthew 25, 1-13,  The kingdom of heaven will be like the 10 virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.

    Introduction

    What we call Chapter 25 of the Matthew gospel is composed of three parables,

    the first of which is about a Wedding Banquet, the Father’s gift of salvation.  The Bridegroom of this parable is the Lord, Jesus who is coming for his Bride, the Church, those who have welcomed and are living the Good News.

    Good Morning, Dearest Tori, Welcome.  It is so nice to see you.

     

     

    The First Reading, [a substitution, Isaiah 25:6-8] is from the Prophet Isaiah. It describes the Wedding Banquet for those who seek to do the will of the Lord; what unites us together is good food, aged wine, and forgiveness.

    Our Responsorial Psalm, ‘My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God,’ addresses our yearning for a spiritual banquet with the Lord.

    Our Second reading from St. Paul’s Letter to the Thessalonians addresses the mystical body of Christ rising together as one Body, for the Wedding Banquet at the end of time.

    Our spiritual gift, of course, is that the Lord comes to us here and now in our banquet of the Liturgy of the Word and Eucharist, the fish and the bread.

    The Holy Gospel according to Matthew: the parable of the Ten Bridesmaids.

    I say to you that something is terribly wrong in the way we understand this parable:  We sense it in the failure of the wise bridesmaids to share some of their oil with the foolish bridesmaids whose lamps were going out.  Obviously, there must be an answer to this dilemma, and you will be surprised to find where I found it?

    Most of you can remember singing along with the children, as they held up their little paper or cardboard lamps, “This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine….” You probably don’t recall that its meaning is purposely given in Matthew’s ‘Sermon on the mount.

    Here they are, Folks, better than ever (as they say on Mike & Mike, A.M. sports radio).

     

     

    You are the light of the world….let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” The oil that was brought by the wise bridesmaids for their lamps in this parable, is a metaphor.  It represents the good works they have done by loving others as Christ has loved them. When the wise bridesmaids, who are the Light of the World, trim their lamps with oil to go out to meet the Bridegroom, they are of course lighting the way for others as Christ escorts them to the Wedding Banquet.

    This Little Light of Mine, will always be special because of you singing it for us, Emma.

     

     

    The foolish, however, have no oil. Without good works it is impossible for them to trim their lamps, so the wise tell them to go to the marketplace for that’s where they can to do good works by becoming the Light of the World for others, the oil that gives glory to God.  It is where they can choose to use their God given talents for the good of all, to be the Light of the World in their encounters with the poor, the lonely, the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the sick.
