January 25, 2015, 3rd Ordinary Time B

Readings:

Jonah  3, 1-10, The word of the Lord came to Jonah, saying…..

Psalm 25,    Teach me your ways, O Lord.

1 Corinthians 7, 29-31,   Let those having wives act as not having them.

Mark 1, 14-20,   Come after me and I will make you fishers of people.

"Hi, Folks," says Charlotte, "Welcome."

Jonah: This little book of 4 chapters is a gem and tells a delightful short story.   It is so good I would like to read it all, but will read only chapter 1 and most of chapter 3.

Background: Jonah has been asked by Yahweh to go to Nineveh in Assyria to tell the people & leaders that they are evil and will be punished shortly by Yahweh. Trouble is, Nineveh is the enemy, like me going to Houston or Philadelphia.

So he runs away, catches a boat headed for Spain, is blamed by the sailors for causing a big storm on the sea, and is dumped overboard. The whale swallows him and for three days Jonah is constrained to reflect on what he is doing. When, after 3 days, the whale dumps him on shore, Jonah is more willing to listen. We arrive at this point and I will have most of chapter 3 read.

Chloe, too, with her sister, says, "Welcome, Everybody.

Author: For centuries, while people took this story as factual, Jonah was considered author of his own story. Once it was seen as a fable or allegory, it is accepted that the story probably has some unknown ancient as the author.

Date of composition: no one really knows, but educated guesses put it ca. 800 before Christ.

Note: the story of Jonah and the story of Jesus' interaction with his future apostles are both about The Call.   1 Corinthians is really bad. Just like last week. Who in Rome chooses these readings?

Reminiscing at 75

This morning I would like to reminisce on the theme of call at 75. I propose that calls can be blessings or gifts. For example.

I see three big calls in my 75 years. The first came when I was in high school at the old Jesuit on Oak Lawn. I felt drawn to be a Jesuit & a priest.

I admit there was a lot of scare in this decision, scare that I was going to hell because of my sinful ways and the guys I hung around with. I remember clearly one of the sermons commonly used with us guys. You go out with your girl friend, you neck a little bit, you head home, you are hit by a train, and killed instantly. You go straight to hell.

I remember the pastor at Christ the King telling the people that where you go will depend upon the people you hang out with. Good people, you go to heaven. Bad people, you know where. I looked around and thought to myself, ‘I know where I’m going.’ I look around now and see some of my best friends, one a lawyer, another a banker, and my friend in Chicago, FBI. On second thought, I still don’t know where we all might be going.

Trouble is, now I don’t think there is a hell thanks to my Jesuit training. I grew up in the Jesuits. We simply had to. I used to look at some of my classmates in the military and thought they were lucky. We entered the Jesuits in those days and never went home for anything, weddings, special events, maybe funerals of parents.

With all this, my decision to follow this inner call to be a Jesuit was an enormous blessing.

It led me to a second momentous blessing in my life, my years in East Africa, especially Tanzania. I really had to learn how to adapt. I learned Swahili and in the process discovered I have a gift for languages.

A high moment for me during maybe my 8th year came one afternoon when I went to a market in a big shed at my base near Kilimanjaro. I had an old Tanzanian who was a buddy. He sold fruits and veggies. I always chatted with him when I was in town. One day after we had chatted, a little old lady asked him, while I was to the side picking fruit, was I one of them, their people.

Cupcake, really a power bar of the week to Sir Charlie in another decade.

I used Swahili so good she thought I was an ndugu, which means something like a brother, something I would never had used for myself. The old guy told me and I was floored.

Then I was somewhat unpleasantly invited to go back to the States, which led to the third most incredible call and blessing, Rosemary and marriage.

  Looking back I returned to the States with a loneliness that I picked up in Tanzania and a much different perspective on marriage that I also picked up from the people, the priests, and even the bishops and a particular cardinal. Tanzanians deep inside think not getting married is contrary to the laws of the universe. I came home with this and I now could not be a happier person.

Finally, a side effect call and gift: you people, our community, the gift and the fun I receive from you every week.

Calls can be marvelous gifts and blessings. I have had three and a half marvelous ones.

Readings: January 18, 2015

1 Samuel 3,  3-19, Go to sleep, and if you are called, reply, “Speak, Lord, your servant is listening.”

Psalm 40,    Here I am, Lord, I come to do your will.

1 Corinthians 6, 13-15, 17-20,   Your body is a temple of the Spirit within you.

John 1, 35-42,   What are you looking for?

Buddy says, "Wow, Look what I got at the Stuff Swap."

1 Samuel observations:

What: 4 books about 4 big leaders of the People, Samuel & Saul, David & Solomon. 1 & 2 Samuel, 1 & 2 Kings.

Who: Samuel is the first big leader of the people. He is a judge and the last. The following 3 are kings of the people, Saul, David, and Solomon.

Time: The events take place ca. 1100-1000 before Christ. The compilation & recording of the events takes place ca. 555 before Christ. Sound familiar? Babylonian Captivity

Who is that with a new, slightly used skooter?

Today's Selection: Yahweh is calling Samuel in a dream. This ties in with the Gospel where three future apostles are called. Samuel's mother was Hannah, and she is famous because of a touching story about how she came to have Samuel.

I had the story of King David read the Sunday before Christmas and I talked about Samuel.

Hannah, Samuel's mother, had promised Yahweh that she would dedicate to the temple her son, if she got one. Consequently, our selection finds Samuel residing in the temple with Eli the prophet. He would be about 12 years old.

Be aware that while these marvelous stories are mythological, the writer is attempting to convey to a simple people lessons in trust in Yahweh.

The Samuel reading, the Psalm, and the Gospel are all about call. I would like to talk about this at homily. As the Psalm says, "I come to do your will." What is that? What if it is just being peaceful?

Wow, I think that is our Beautiful Zoe.

Big Calls and Little Calls

Like I mentioned, I would like to talk about calls this morning. I would observe that there are big calls and little calls. A big call would be like my call to go work in Tanzania and East Africa. A little call could be like this. Our story of the week.

So I go to the J this past Friday morning, the Jewish Community Center. You know I go there Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for a 6 o’clock spin class. The room has 25 stationary bikes and often the majority are occupied.

And then there is our Beautiful Victoria cruising the stuff swap.

I had not been to the spin class since the Monday 10-12 days before. I had a low grade, almost cold during the cold cloudy period and I just could not get it to go away. One of the things I do to get ahead of a cold, beside heat and hydration, is rest. I do no exercise and I force myself to lie down for an hour in the morning and in the afternoon.

I knew what it was going to take and it did. The sun came out Thursday, the temperature moderated, and, voila, the cold disappeared. I could not wait for Friday morning.

So I get there, say, ten minutes early. I walk in, say hi to the lady who gives me a locker key for the change room and a towel. I walk into the change room and say hi to two other old geezers I like to joke with.

All this time I am expecting that someone, at least the lady at the entrance, might say, “Where you been? I’ve missed you.” No, nothing, not even the two old geezers.

Happiness is a Cupcake of The week at 18.

So I walk down the hall and enter the spin room about 5:50. Perhaps 8 people are there, including a lady who always rides on the bike immediately to my left.

She is doing pre-ride exercises on the floor. I say hi to her and talk with two guys I like, younger guys. Yep, you guessed it. No word about me being gone. I was deflated. I like the spin classes, but I equally like the people and I know pretty nearly everyone by name. In fact, when I first started coming, people would just walk in, get on a bike, and start riding without a word to anybody. Now I greet everyone and it seems like people are talking more.

Eventually I just told people I had been gone almost two weeks because of a faint cold. Then I had a couple of people say they had noticed I had not been around.

The temptation?   Baloney on those people. I have liked them, greeted them, and told them that I missed them when I noted that they had been gone, even for one class. It is easy for me to notice, because the majority use the same bike each class.   I know some of them were flattered when I noticed.

That’s the temptation. What’s the call? Even a little call. I think the call to me, at least, is to continue to greet these folks, to chat them up, and, yes, to tell them I missed them when they are gone for a class or two. People are worth more than my deflation.

So, be sure to tell Rosemary and me how much you missed us the next time we are away for a week. Only so much deflation I can handle, and you know Rosemary.

Sunday Homily, January 11, 2015, Baptism of Jesus

Readings:

Isaiah 55, 1-11, All you who are thirsty, come to the water.

Psalm, Isaiah 12,    You will draw water joyfully from the springs of salvation.

1 John 5, 1-9,  Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God.

Mark 1, 7-11,   The baptism of Jesus.

Renee Elisabeth says, "Welcome in Everybody. I just got baptized."

Isaiah observations:

Who: Can you guess, Isaiah 1, 2, or 3. Actually, we have two selections from Isaiah, Isaiah 12 for the psalm and Isaiah 55. Isaiah 12 is easy. That is first Isaiah. Isaiah 55 is in the middle of all the 66 chapters, and, yes, it is second Isaiah. They write before and during the Babylonian Captivity. Both passages are comfort passages.

Today’s passages: despite the different time each writer wrote, both are trying to encourage the people and let them know that their God is with them. The first reading, Isaiah 55, is especially rich. It contains beautiful images of food and drink, rain and snow on the earth.

You are Beloved

Yesterday afternoon Rosemary and I had the privilege and the joy of baptizing a little 5 month old girl. Her name is Renee Elisabeth. She is the daughter & second child of Colleen and Carl Huval. Colleen is the daughter of our John and Jean O’Donnell.

I love baptisms and when I can and the little kid permits it, I love to carry her or him around and talk. Renee Elisabeth was so peaceful and accepting. At Saint Marks I used to pick these little kids up at the beginning of Mass and I would introduce them and have them welcome everyone.

Zoe says, "Come in Everybody, where it is warm."

One Sunday I did this in the main church at the 9:00 Mass. I had the little boy in my arms for maybe 10 minutes and gave him back to his momma. After the Mass I am outside saying good-bye to everybody and I noticed I had a sour smell about me. That little boy had barfed on my left shoulder and nobody told me. I had to laugh and I really gave it to those people the next week for not telling me.

When I did Renee Elisabeth’s baptism yesterday I did the two things I love to do. First, I invite people to discuss when they last saw God and also where do they most find the presence and peace of God. This brings in some really nice answers. Of course, Renee Elisabeth was the place where many said they saw God.

"It's great here," says Megan.

After the baptism I like to talk with the little kids. I told Renee Elisabeth that this baptism was her official welcome into the marvel of her new life. And I told her that I had three things I wanted her to remember.

First, I want you to know, Renee, that you are like Mark says about Jesus, You are my Beloved.   In fact, you are beloved, you are beautiful, you are good, and you are perfect just as you are.

The pretty Georgie says, "That's my friend, Megan."

Secondly, you are being officially welcomed into a marvelous family that also thinks you are beautiful, good, perfect, and beloved.

Thirdly, you are being officially welcomed into a marvelous community (your numerous grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, at least), who also hold you dear, consider you beautiful and perfect. She seemed to accept this.

One of the reasons I love to have our kids present with us at Mass is that they may know that they are part of us, that we appreciate them, and that we and God loves them.

People have told me that their kids see me in the white robes and they think this creature is God. When I was a little boy I probably thought the same thing, but that god figure did not like little boys, or at least me, and instilled in me a belief that I was bad.

Victoria says, "Cupcake time yet?"

This is why I will always welcome our kids. I want them to know that God loves them, that they are good and beloved.

Of course, I have tried to inform Rosemary that God does not do yard work and does not do dishes. No luck with that. In fact, God received for Christmas a new vacuum cleaner. God had worn out the old one.

How do you know that you are beloved? Blessed?

Harper says, "I feel beloved."
