    Andy's ashes

    True?

One day I had lunch with some friends.  Jim, a short, balding 80 year old, came along.

When the menus were presented, we ordered salads, sandwiches, and soup, except for Jim who said, “Ice cream, please, two scoops.  Along with heated apple pie”

I wasn’t sure my ears heard right, as if people did this all the time.  But when our orders arrived, I did not enjoy mine.

I could not take my eyes off Jim as his pie a-la-mode went down.  The other guys couldn’t believe it.  The ate their salads silently and grinned.

The next time I went out to eat, I called and invited old Jim.  I lunched on my salad.  He ordered a sundae.  I smiled.  He asked me if he amused me.  “Yes, you do, but you also confuse me.  How come you order such rich desserts?”

He laughed and said, “I’m tasting all that is possible.  I realize life is so short that I hate to miss anything good.  I have never been this old before.  So, before I die, I want to try those things that for years I had passed up.  I haven’t smelled all the flowers yet!”
