True?

A hundred and fifty years ago there lived a woman named Sono, whose devotion and purity of heart were respected far and wide. One day a fellow Buddhist, having made a long trip to see her, asked, "What can I do to put my heart at rest?"

She said, "Every morning and every evening, and whenever anything happens to you, keep on saying, 'Thanks for everything. I have no complaint whatsoever.' "

The man did as he was instructed for a whole year, but his heart was still not at peace. He returned to Sono crestfallen. "I've said your prayer over and over, and yet nothing in my life has changed; I'm still the same selfish person as before. What should I do now?"

Sono immediately said, "Thanks for everything. I have no complaint whatsoever."

On hearing these words, the man was able to open his spiritual eye, and he returned home with a great joy.

Romans 6:  We know that Christ, raised from the dead, dies no more; death no longer has power over him.
Matthew 10:  And whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because the little one is a disciple—amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward.”

To be able o be the source of calm and joy in the midst of crisis is to stir timid souls to life again. “Sometimes your joy is the source of your smile,” Thich Nhat Hanh says, “but sometimes your smile can be the source of your joy.”

  • 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time, July 12, 2026

Isaiah 55:  Thus says the LORD: Just as from the heavens the rain and snow come down and do not return there till they have watered the earth, making it fertile and fruitful, . . .
Romans 8:  . . . for creation was made subject to futility, not of its own accord but because of the one who subjected it, in hope that creation itself would be set free from slavery to corruption and share in the glorious freedom of the children of God.
Matthew 13:  “A sower went out to sow.  And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and birds came and ate it up.  Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep, and when the sun rose it was scorched, and it withered for lack of roots. Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. But some seed fell on rich soil and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold . . .

The tragedy of life is to allow it to go by without appreciating something in every single day, without celebrating its fundamental goodness to us.
