Introduction: In the creation story from Genesis, the serpent deceives Eve; and Adam brings sin into the world. In our gospel reading, Satan is also a deceiver. Paul’s Letter to the Romans, ‘We are all made righteous through Jesus Christ.

Homily: 

Here is a Greek definition for the word ‘tempter.’  In Greek, it is dee-ah-bah-lahs. The tempter is diabolic, wicked.   In today’s gospel reading it is the world that is arrogant and wicked.  It wants from Jesus Christ, the Son of God, a miracle or two, or three.  The world receives Jesus’ answer.  ‘I am not of the world. I bring to you the Father’s love; for he has sent me to redeem the world.’

The Lord doesn’t have miracles on his agenda, for a faith based on miracles is no faith at all!  I propose to you that the Scribes and Pharisees are the devil in this reading. They are the ones who say to Jesus, ‘give us a miracle, so that we might believe in you.’

Recall that it is the diabolic Pharisees and Scribes who want to trap Jesus by bringing to him, while he was teaching at the entrance of the temple, a woman caught in the act of adultery. ‘Moses said that we should stone her; what do you say.’

The Team.

 

 The spirit that flows forth from the legalistic way the Pharisees and Scribes teach and live the Law ignore love. Their spirit is unclean.  They are the hypocrites that put fear in the minds of others, instead of love.   They can be likened to a circus hustler, ‘Come see Jesus feed, with a loaf of bread and a few fish, the overflowing crowd in the Big Tent.’

Their ignorance misleads the crowd, for the bread and fish of the Gospel are the Liturgy of the Word and Liturgy of Eucharist.  There is no miracle here, only love.

When Jesus spiritually heals the sick and unclean in the Gospel; these are not miracles. Those who come to him desire to be forgiven; they are seeking to change their lives by welcoming and living his life-giving words.

God’s plan for us is not easy, therefore, ‘in everything we are to give thanks,’  Through the power of the Holy Spirit, Christ is alive to us, in good times and bad.  When we pray together each Sunday for our brothers and sisters who are physically sick or ill, we are praying for their care givers, their doctors, their nurses, their children, their parents, their friends.

    Readings: Isaiah 50, 4-9; Psalm 116, I will walk before the Lord, in the Land of the Living; James 2, 14-18; Mark 8, 27-35

    Isaiah: 

    Date of Composition:

    A picture of the time span:

            1. Solomon (he of Wisdom, the temple builder, 700 wives, & 300 mistresses–if he really existed) dies ca. 900-1000 BCE

            2. the Hebrew kingdom divides into 2 parts, the north, Israel (Galilee), the south, Judah.

            3.  Assyria destroys Israel and obliterates the 10 Hebrew tribes located there, ca. 725.

            4.  Babylon carries into captivity the Hebrews of Judah, ca. 590.

    Contemporary scholars conjecture that this work could have been composed over a period of 400 years, i.e., 700-300.  It obviously begins by predicting disasters.  They happen,  the 2 big tragedies in Jewish history up to the Holocaust, the Assyrian destruction & the Babylonian Captivity.

    Author (s): obviously it was composed by numerous people.  Isaiah himself is considered behind chapters 1-39.  In fact, line 1 identifies Isaiah as the author of the ideas.

    What is it about:

    Chapters 1-39: predict doom for the Hebrews because they have not been faithful to their one god, YHWH.

    Chapters 40-55: called Isaiah 2, this & the remaining chapters (56-66) are called The Book of Consolation.  They try to assure the people who are now in exile that YHWH will restore them to their former glory & peace.  In fact, in chapter 45 the composer even mentions the name of Cyrus, the king of the Persians who defeats Babylon & sends the Hebrews back to Jerusalem.  So the composer knew of Cyrus and a date can be narrowed down.

    This Isaiah 2 section presents 4 suffering servant songs, #3 being our selection today.  Jews see the servant to be the Hebrew people/nation.  Christians see the servant to be Christ.  Isaiah 2 is considered maybe the most influential O.T. book, especially on the New Testament.  On Isaiah 2 Mark built much of his gospel, especially the story of the crucifixion.

    Handel's Messiah uses Isaiah 2 for its lyrics.

    Chapter 56-66: more assurances of a return to peace & glory.

    Our selection: Isaiah 2.  The suffering servant is talking about the abuse he is experiencing.  Then he proclaims, 'YHWH will help me & I won't be put to shame.'

    Take up Your Cross and Follow

    As most of you know, the last Saturday in August I joined Bill Hammond & 14 thousand plus other nuts to ride in the Hotter 'N Hell Hundred (as in miles).  Folks, it was ecstatic. For me participatory athletic events like this have an elixir, a kinetic energy that touches me all the way down to my toes.  In fact, for the second year in a row, as I rode down the ramp of a bridge and headed toward the dramatic finish arch, I had tears of consolation in my eyes.  I am humbled that I can actually be part of the event.

    As much as I was intoxicated by the over all event, two smaller happenings moved me.  Both occurred in the latter 50 mile section, the section where I know I am more wako than I thought.  I had pulled into one of the marvelous rest stops around mile 70.  There were tons of riders & volunteers all around.  I went over to a chair to rest a few moments.  Near me was a group of about 6 guys in their late 20's, very athletic and full of personality and energy.  One of their guys was sitting about one seat over from me and he was teasing back & forth with the other guys.  I look over at him and he's got no left foot.  I am stunned.  Lying on the ground was his artificial foot and he was massaging his stump.  So, what am I complaining about!

    Later I am pedaling along and clumps of riders are passing me.  I see ahead of me a young guy whom I just might pass, hooray.  I get up behind him, say, "On your left," and begin to pass him.  I look over at him as I am coming along side and he has no arms.  He has metal prosthetics.  I gulp.  Suddenly I am embarrassed to pass him. 

    Birthdays 9-13-09

    I talk about this because it feeds right into something that is mentioned in Mark, a paragraph that has great potential for healthy living, and for unhealthy living.  Mark mentions that to follow Jesus I have to deny myself and take up my cross.  I got to lose my life to save it.  Hey, I don't like denying myself and I am not attracted to the idea of taking up a cross.  Look what happened to him.

    Folks, we have infinite demand here again.  The other side being infinite acceptance.  Let me touch three points, a little history and an explanation of the unhealthy and healthy approach to these ideas.

    First, the history.  When Mark wrote you can bet he was under the influence of the philosophy of dualism.  That is, all the world is divided into two, bad-good, flesh-spirit, body-soul.  To enhance the growth of the spirit & soul, the flesh & body has to be disciplined.  In fact, basic appetites & attractions must not only be disciplined but hammered into quiescence. 

    Which leads to the second point, the unhealthy & healthy living.  It is easy to see how a person, influenced by this philosophy could be hard on himself, in fact, could do damage to himself.  It is called masochism.  Spiritual practices that mirrored this philosophy were part of my early Jesuit training.

    In order to detach ourselves from our attachment to our families, our love of our families, we young Jesuits were never allowed to return home for a visit, not for Christmas, Easter, anything.  I remember one summer vacation floating down the Calcacieu River in a pirogue in s.w. Louisiana with a classmate of mine, and he told me that a few miles away in New Orleans his brother was getting married at that very time. We thought that was normal.  We had to extinguish our desires.  This is how the idea of denying myself can be unhealthy or at least just unnecessary.  I have told you about the little rope scourges we were expected to use on ourselves especially on Fridays. 

    Thirdly, on the healthy side, I have my two handicapped guys in the HHH.  I would propose that to live a healthy life, to develop a wholeness in myself, to aim to be a Renaissance person, I need to focus on four targets, the intellectual, the physical, and the spiritual/psychological.  This involves denying myself and self discipline, it involves moderation.  I am my cross.  The reward is contentment & peace.

    The fourth element in wholeness is you got to live for others, like James' reading brings up.  Jesuit talks about being men for others.  I specialize in aiding the underprivileged.  I do it not for me but for them.  In giving, however, I am richer. 

    Those two guys I encountered in the HHH have taken up their crosses, they have denied themselves and I would suggest that they are more content and peaceful than if they had stayed home watching TV.

  • Sunday Homily 5-17-09, 6th Easter

    Readings: Acts 10 25-48; Psalm 98, The Lord has revealed to the Nations his Saving Power; 1 John 4, 7-10; John 15, 9-17

    Acts:  Another review–

    Author: Luke, who wrote both the Gospel and Acts

    Date: ca. 40-50 years after the death of Jesus

    Our selection: This same selection was read on Easter Sunday.  What is happening is this.  Last Sunday we began the second half of Acts, from chapter 9 to the end.  Last week's reading had to do with Paul returning to the community in Jerusalem after he had his conversion experience on the road to Damascus. 

    This week we get into chapter 10 which focuses on two characters: Peter and a Gentile (non-Jew) captain in the Roman army named Cornelius.  Cornelius was supposed to be a good man and he has a voice call him, "Cornelius." "What is it, sir?" he answers.  The voice tells him to go a town called Joppa and talk with a man named Peter.  Cornelius sends two servants.

    Meanwhile in Joppa Peter has that vision we talked about Easter Sunday: a sheet coming down from the sky with a multitude of animals.  Many of the animals are considered ritually impure by Jews.  Peter is told by a voice to eat from these animals, but Peter refuses.  While this is going on the two servants arrive and the voice tells Peter to go with them.  Peter arrives at Captain Cornelius' house and that is where we take up the story.

    Luke is interested here not so much in history as in convincing his readers that the Gentiles as well as Jews are included in the new religion.

    Psalms:

    Dates: Put together at ca. 300 years BCE.

    Author(s): The old belief that David composed all 150 Psalms is just myth.  The reality: many people and groups of people composed the psalms over centuries.

    Purpose: songs of gratitude, sorrow, pain, and longing to be sung by the Jewish people, especially in the temple and later in the synagogue.  Special songs were composed for feast days like passover and the feast of lights, to name just two.

    Requem for a Water Trailer: That Your Joy May be Complete

    Friday morning I handed it over, Folks.  You remember the big red water tank I used to fill up at the back door here ever since we started coming here?  Friday I donated it to the Texas Tree Foundation, the group where I used to buy our trees wholesale. 

    A number of events were taking place that made me aware it may be time for me to move on to another hobby.  PISD & RISD have both said they don't want any more trees because they get in the way of their big lawn mowers and it busts their budgets.  My truck is smoking badly.  And heading into 70 years I am aware I cannot lift and dig like I used to. 

    I admit I experienced a sadness when I went to Jean Atwood's house Thursday night to pick up the trailer, Jean who has been so generous to store the trailer in her driveway for the last 4 years, ever since I departed Jesuit & we planted Plano Senior.  And likewise, Friday morning when I drove it over to the the tree farm.  I have spent hours working with that trailer and have kept alive thousands of little trees through terrific Dallas droughts. 

    More than the sadness, though, I sense a joy probably like what is mentioned in John's Gospel, one of my favorite line in Scripture. 

    I certainly was consoled when I delivered the trailer to the team at the TX Trees Foundation near TI.  They need the trailer to water trees in a downtown Dallas urban forest park this summer.

    I, likewise, am delighted when I ride streets in north Dallas shaded with our trees.  I pass islands, say, on the east side of Love Field, along Lemon Avenue, and I can see in my mind Kovatis and Leals planting the islands or Rose Banzhaf shoveling mulch into containers behind Hillcrest High.  I can see Kim Quirk & her family planting trees in a park at Lovers Lane & Lemon.

    I got some amusing memories which give me joy.  Plano Senior, 5:30 A.M., Sean Schleicher watering from the back of the truck in the dark, I'm driving.  I get us stuck in the mud of a shallow irrigation ditch just north of the baseball diamond which had over watered its field and the water had drained into the ditch.

    Remember the beautiful day we planted 400 trees in 1 hour at Plano Senior?  We were scheduled to start about 12:00.  Ten minutes before 12:00 I'm in that big south east parking lot getting things ready.  Kovatis comes by and yells, "Where is everybody?  We got a lot of work to do!"   I look up 30 minutes later and people are everywhere.  30 more minutes and people are coming up asking where are more trees to plant.  Everything was planted and the picnic we planned for 3:00 began ca. 1:00. 

    Remember the chili picnics prepared by my buddy Lamberty at Jesuit?  Remember way back when we took two Sundays to plant Marsh Lane from LBJ to Northwest Hwy and Frank Hart, my old coach from Christ the King, invited the whole planting party to his restaurant?

    These memories give me great joy as do my trips around the streets, parks, and school campuses we have planted.  How many?  Who knows?  Take 20 years and conservatively say we averaged 200 trees a year.  That would be a minimum.  And most of them are all out there.

  • Sunday Homily, March 30, 2014, 4th Lent, Cycle A

    Readings:

    Samuel 16, 1-13,   Samuel anointed David.

    Psalm 23,  The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want.

    Ephesians  5, 8-14,  You were once darkness, but now you are light.

    John  9, 1-41,  As Jesus passed by he saw a man blind from birth.

    Mike's Homily:

    Jesus perceived that a man who was begging had been blind from birth.  So, he replies to his disciples that they must do the work of the one who has sent him. The work that the Father has given his Son is to proclaim the good news, the Father’s plan of salvation. 

    Jesus perceived by what the beggar has said or did not say, by what he was doing or was not doing, that the beggar was spiritually blind; he had never heard the good news of Jesus Christ that gives spiritual light to the world.

    Jesus makes some clay and anoints the beggar’s eyes to make us aware that the beggar is about to become a new creation.  Recall from the prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah that God is the potter and that man is formed by Him.  Jesus says to him, ‘Go, wash in the pool of Siloam which means sent.  

    To understand this command, the reader must return two chapters, to the Feast of Tabernacles at the pool of Siloam where gushing, spring fed living waters flowed into and were sent out from of this pool.

    These living waters are a metaphor for the good news of Jesus Christ, for He had called out on the greatest, and last day of the feast, the only day when waters were not drawn from the pool, ‘Come to me if you are thirsty, for from my heart flows living waters.’  Jesus had sent the man to be baptized in the Holy Spirit, so that he could send him forth living and proclaiming the good news. 

    So, the beggar returned to the temple no longer unclean; he had been enlightened and the Spirit dwelled within him.   Of course, the Pharisees who said that they could spiritually see, but reject the good news, remain blind.

    Today’s reading purposely sends us back to the earlier reading of what happened at the end of the Feast of Tabernacles to another very similar parable.  The scribes and the Pharisees bring a woman who was caught in the act of adultery to Jesus, saying to him, ‘Moses commanded that such a woman should be stoned.  What do you say?’    The scribes and the Pharisees were the teachers of the Law.

    They knew the oral and written tradition that required them to bring both the man and the woman accused of committing adultery, and at least two witnesses to Jesus, if they were seeking a judgment from him; but their intention was to discredit Jesus. 

    Now, during the feast of Tabernacles, the oral tradition required the high priest, as he cleansed himself in the waters of the pool of Siloam, to say from the prophet Jeremiah, ‘those who reject the Lord, the fountain of living waters, will in shame have their names written in the earth.

    So when Jesus knelt down in front of them, he began writing the names, the most prominent first, of these scribes and Pharisees who had rejected the fountain of living waters, his life-giving good news.  Shamed, for they understood what Jesus was doing, they left the people, the woman and Jesus, the oldest to the youngest, when Jesus said to them, ‘Let the one among you who is without sin, cast the first stone.’  

    After the woman acknowledges to Jesus that there is no one left to condemn her, he says to her, ‘go away,’ [better, go along the way believing the good news] and sin no more.  She too had been sent forth. 

    In like manner each of us has been sent forth with and from the living waters. 

    From whom did you receive or give a drink of that living water this past week?

     

  • Sunday Homily 8-8-10, 19th Ordinary Time

    Readings:  Wisdom 18, 6-9; Psalm 33, Blessed the People the Lord has chosen to be his own; Hebrews 11, 1 & 2, 8-19; Luke 12, 32-48. 

    Wisdom of Solomon Explanation:

    Author or composer: not Solomon, but a Jew living in Alexandria, Egypt who spoke and wrote excellent Greek.

    Date: ca. 100-200 BCE.  How do we know these facts?  Because of text analysis.  For example, while the author wrote in Greek, he uses phrases and expressions that have a Hebrew flavor.  Also, he mentions rulers and places that reveal date and locale like Alexandria (Egypt). 

    Winklers 8-8-10

    Subject matter: the book makes use of traditional Jewish material, as well as ideas borrowed from Greek philosophy, in order to teach that God rewards those who are faithful to him.

     

    Special Note: Wisdom is one of the 12-15 books of the deutero-canonical books of the bible.  Not OT nor NT, but in between and the subject of controversy over the centuries.  Were they really part of the bible or not?  How do you know?  Catholic church accepts the books, since the Council of Trent in ca. 1550.

     

    Today’s selection, chapter 18, the next to last chapter: rather quirky and opaque.  Why the editors choose these tiny, disconnected paragraphs, who knows.  Basically, the author is gloating over the fact that the Egyptian first born babies were all slaughtered by Yahweh when Pharoah would not let the Jewish people leave, the Passover.  I will read his vision, vv.14-19 of the same chapter.

    Do not be Afraid Any Longer

     

     

    Your man Tony O’Donovan and I have established a delightful practice of having either lunch or coffee every week. This past week we had a coffee scheduled for the Starbucks near me at the corner of Preston & Royal.

     

     

     

    When I arrived about 9:30, Tony was already seated at a table on the sidewalk.  So I went inside to get two coffees.  There was a line of 8-10 people.  No problem, it always goes quickly.

     

     

    In front of me was a guy about my height, but, let’s say a little portly without much apparent muscle tone.  The line is moving forward and the kids behind the coffee machines are calling to the people waiting in line.

     

     

    At one point a kid calls out to the guy in front of me, but the guy  is looking to my right away from the kid calling him.  So I touch him on his left shoulder and say, “The kid is calling you.”

     

     

    He turns around to me and he says in this intense voice, “Don’t you touch me.  Don’t you ever touch me!”

    Thump.  I am stunned.  I have nothing to say.  I just stand there and I guess I shake my head.  He pays for whatever he wanted and then goes to the end of the counter to pick it up. 

     

     

    Then, he returns to me still in line and says the same thing again, this time adding something like, “You don’t ever touch a person in public!” 

     

     

    Well, folks, I almost unloaded on him.  I was ready to knock him down and stomp on him.  I could handle the first time he spoke.  But when he returned to lecture me,  I nearly lost it.  I do not know what held me back.  Even now as I retell the event I feel my stomach muscles clenching up. 

     

     

    I go outside and narrate my adventure to Tony.  He says that I’m lucky I did not start a commotion that would bring the police.  He would have disowned me.  I was double lucky, too, because my next door neighbor lady was there, a girl I really love for all she did for me when I was home bound. 

     

     

    So what are the lessons from this event in connection with our readings? 

     

    First, I would suggest that you do not have coffee with Irish married priests.  Very bad karma. 

     

     

    However, I see two other lessons, one negative, the other positive. 

     

    Nancy 8-8-10

     

    First lesson, as it said in the very beginning of the Gospel, ‘Don’t be afraid any longer.’  I would suggest this means, don’t be afraid of people, future events, or God .

     

     

    As you continue in the Gospel, it seems to me Luke denies the very statement he makes in the beginning.  God is presented as a demanding master & we are servants who better be vigilant or we will get caught and sent straight to hell.

     

     

    Everyone has their personal view of what our God is like.  I can only say that for me God is at least benevolent, not a master who beats people if they behave in some negative way, like Mark is saying.  Moreover, I do not see us as servants, but rather friends and caretakers.

     

     

    Second lesson.  The Gospel talks a lot about vigilance.  Watch out or you are going to get whacked.  No way.  I suggest, as I have done before, the vigilance is for the beauty, the beauty of life, the beauty of nature, the beauty of people.

    Welcome Back, Dear Seth.  It is delightful to see you again.

    Seth, as delightful as it is to see you, it is even more fun to see you awake.  Hi to your Mama, Monique.

     

     

    Ezekiel observations:

    Who:  Ezekiel is one of the 3 great prophets, along with Isaiah and Jeremiah. 

    When:  He lived in Babylon before and during the  Captivity, ca. 555 before Christ

    Message:  condemnation of behavior and promise of divine punishment.  The promise of a brighter future someday.

    Do nothing out of selfishness,  rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves, each looking out not for his own interests, but also for those of others.

    I would like to proclaim today a Good News Sunday.  I seem to be overwhelmed lately with bad news.  The Good News is still here. Philipppians says it and people are doing it.  They are not acting out of selfishness.  They are not looking out just for their own interests.  They are caring for others.

    3 examples.

    First, last Tuesday morning Rosemary & I teamed up with Carrie to ride around that Dallas jewel, White Rock Lake.  We meet usually on the north bridge by the doggie park.  She & Paul live on the east side of the Lake.  Rosemary & I ride south down the White Rock Creek path, which is a gem in its own right. 

    So Tuesday we are riding south down the eastern shore of the lake.  We take a little loop that puts us on the tail end of Lake Highlands Drive.  We go down a dip and up a slope going left.  I am ahead & hear Carrie call my name.  I go on perhaps 50 yards & don’t see them behind me.  I go back.  Carrie had dropped her chain.

    Hi to the Seth Clan, Cameron & Frank, Mary, Monique and Nicole with Mr. Seth.

     

    By the time I get there, they have the bike upside down and are fixing it.   I know Rosemary knows how to fix the chain and I am sure Carrie does too.  Everything is going okay but one place the chain is wedged between the seat post and the front derailer.  I join in the effort.  The chain is really wedged.

    Meanwhile other bikers are rolling by.   I hear, “Need any help?  “No,” we respond, sure we can fix this thing.  Finally, a black guy rides by and asks the same question.   But instead of passing on, he stops, takes a look, fiddles a bit with the chain, then yanks it into place.  All cheer he hops back on his bike and sails away.

    Who is that escorting Erin up the aisle to her wedding?  Can it really be??  Yes, it can!  Erin is being escorted by her very son, The Great Cole.

     

     

    You know what struck me?  Perhaps a dozen people rode by and every one of them asked if we needed help. 

    The Good News: Care for each other exists.

    Erin & Greg,  Have you come here freely and without reservation to give yourselves to each other in marriage?   (The wedding is taking place on Erin & Greg's home in Spring Valley, TX, small community north of Dallas about an hour on I35.) 

     

     

    Secondly.  There is a Jewish temple in Austin.  A five member family from Afganistan moved in recently.  The community from the temple decided to adopt the family, help them get settled, and provide them with the assistance they would need. 

    Time passed and the family got settled in okay.  To celebrate, the community took the 5 members of the family one evening to a  Greek restaurant in Austin.  All went well.  There were 18 members of the community.

    When the community went to cover all the expenses, the cashier told them there was no charge.  “How come?”, they asked.

    Exchange of Vows.

     

     

    “Some man came up and covered all your expenses,” the cashier responded.  “Do you know who he is?”, they asked.  “No,” came the answer, “He did not leave his name nor even his card.” 

    “I know only one thing about him, because he comes here occasionally.”   “Yes?”, they asked.  “He is Palestinian.”

    Here they are everybody, the young couple in Toronto.

     

    Thirdly.  In a retirement home in Toronto there is a couple of people, a man and a woman who got to know and care for each other.  Recently they got married.   They walked in, but they sat through the ceremony in chairs marked Mr. & Mrs.  At the time when they were invited to kiss each other, they bumped foreheads.  He is 101 and she is 86.

    The Good News: Care for each other exists.

    • Intro to Readings:
       
      Psalm 103 – In Psalm 103 we hear the psalmist’s description
      of God. This same verse is also in psalm 86 and 145, and in Exodus
       
      Ch 34 and Jonah Ch 4. It’s no wonder that, hearing these words,
      thanksgiving became one of the hallmarks of Christian communities.
       
      First Corinthians: Ch 1 Paul opens his letter to the
      Christian community in Corinth by giving thanks for the
      abundance of spiritual blessings they have received.
       
      Luke, in his Gospel, Ch 17, highlights how thanksgiving is
      the way to acknowledge blessings in our daily lives.
       
       
       
      Homily:
       
      Marv Knox is field coordinator for Fellowship Southwest, a
      ministry that provides services for people in the Rio Grande
      Valley, including refugees at the border, kids in public schools,
      disaster relief, and helping people avoid the unjust system of
      payday loans. His article in the Morning News on Friday inspired
      me. He wrote of the similarity between giving thanks and counting
      blessings. He proposes counting our blessings, as we do here
      every Sunday. People pretty much agree we’ve been living
      through hard times.
       
      It’s clear we are a nation divided. Some are still waiting to
      know the outcome of political races; when people are
      divided almost 50-50, counting and re-counting votes takes
      a lot of time.
      We’re still hearing of the forest-fire body counts, with
      hundreds still missing and unaccounted for.
      Refugees the world over, and at our own border, are hoping
      and asking for safety from danger.
      The chaos in Europe and confusion in our western alliance.
      Experiencing the results of global warming, with increased
      intensity and frequency of storms, floods and fires.
      The dropping and shaky stock market.
      The threat again of nuclear aggression from North Korea.
      These hard times, of course, are societal, shared by all;
      there are also the personal hard times we each live with,
      e.g., living with my sisters’ hurt and inability to speak with
      one another. You know your hard time—the anxiety, hurt,
      sadness or trauma you live with.
       
      Counting blessings moves our focus from the dark to the light.
      It helps us see what’s going right, even while we know much is
      going wrong.
       
      Counting blessings turns our attention away from ourselves to
      acknowledge the helpful actions of others.
       
      Counting blessings gives us hope. As we count blessings—
      and give thanks—we see that God is unchanging—ever faithful,
      loving, and abounding in kindness.
       
      Today, like every Sunday, we counted blessings in our lives.
      Imagine, rather than writing his letter to the Christian community
      in Corinth (Greece), Paul wrote to this Christian community,
      saying: I give thanks for your openness to God. There’s no end to
      what has happened in you; it’s beyond speech. The truth of Jesus
      has been clearly verified in your lives…. God will never give up on
      you. Never forget that.”
       
      So: How have you opened your eyes and minds to see and count
      blessings in your life?
