Observations:  on Sirach

What:  This is one of those 12 odd books in between the Old and the New Testament.

 Author: a Jewish teacher called Joshua.  The only identified author in the whole Old Testament.  He tells us who he is, that he is a teacher, lived in Jerusalem, and traveled a lot.  It seems he put his work together while running a school in Alexandria, Egypt.

 His grandson translated the Hebrew work into Greek.  This Hebrew text was lost for centuries until the 19th century, when 2/3 of it was found in Cairo.  Then other portions were found in Qumran and Masada, as late as 1964.

Welcome back, Dee, you look so terrific with your brand new hip.  Did I not warn you that you would love it?

 

 Date: composed around 175 years before Christ.  About 90 years before Christ the Jews put together their official bible, but excluded Sirach because they could not find the Hebrew version, only the Greek. 

 Christians accepted the book as part of their bible in the 2nd century after Christ.  The Council of Trent (keep 1555 in mind as a date) officially accepted it, making it part of that extra 12 books called the Apocrypha or Deuterocanonical.  Martin Luther rejected the book & so do many Protestant congregations today.

 Subject Matter: practical ethics, duties.  Beware of the either / or spirituality presented.  Also, what about unconditional love??

Subject today: you may choose good or bad.  Beware of the either / or spirituality presented in the reading.    All is either good or bad.  No in between or both, which is more what we all are, both good and bad.  

It can be simplistic & Pelagian, that is, it is all up to you and you have all the strength needed to choose good.  Pelagians thought that you had to EARN your salvation.  Therefore, the more religious stuff you did, like the more Masses, the more pilgrimages to the church & shrines, the more novenas & rosaries,  the more merit you win for yourself.

 

Psalm 119: the longest of all the psalms.  A focus on observance of the laws, decrees, and statutes.

Matthew 5:  a continuation of the Sermon on the Mount. Note the figures of speech called “antitheses,” namely, “You have heard it said, but, I say to you.”  4 even 5 times.  Matthew is trying to establish the authority & authenticity of Jesus.

We have been here before, Folks.  In fact, at Romeos Friday Mike sits down and says to me, “So, are you going to start with that same story again?”  Yes, Everybody, we begin with that same story.  Just a quick reminder.  Here we go.

When I was studying theology in Toronto years ago, like maybe 1970, an article came out in the local newspaper.  Some guy had read the passage saying that if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away.  He did it, folks.

 In this passage from Matthew there are five pieces of advice to the early Christians which taken literally can get a person all messed up.  Is there a positive as well as a negative to each? 

Two observations before I touch the five.  I have mentioned this so often that I hope you are not worn out.   First, infinite demand and infinite acceptance.  Watch out here for a lot of infinite demand.  I’ll give a positive & a negative for each.  Secondly, God, unconditional love.

Beginnings…

 

Matthew’s five pieces of advice are 1. breaking the least commandment,  2. getting angry,  3. looking at a woman, 4. divorce, and  5. swearing.  Here goes.

  1. Matthew says that if you break the smallest commandment you will be the least in the kingdom.  Moreover, unless you are better than the Pharisees, you will not even get into the kingdom.  The positive here is that the bar is set high.  The negative is that all, all of us sinners will be kept out. It creates scruples and obsessive compulsive behavior.  
  2. Secondly, if you get mad at me and call me a fool, you are going to Hell.  I love it.  The positive here is the call to anger management.  I am challenged to know that all feelings are okay and need to be controlled.  The negative is that it gives me the idea that anger is not allowed, so stuff it.  Trouble is, it does not stuff well.  Not like a sleeping bag or tent.  It pops up in unexpected places.

  1. Looking at a woman with lust.  The positive here is teaching respect for all people.  This advice, written by men for men, was attempting to gain some respect for women who were looked upon as property.  I found this in Tanzania & Kenya.  Rosemary read me an article about some guy who cut off his wife’s ears and nose for reporting him for abuse.   The negative is that it teaches us that feelings are sinful.  In the old days, we thought we looked at a girl and we were going to hell.  This is doubly sad because I don’t think there is a hell anyway.
  2. Divorce is adultery.  The positive is that it reinforces the unity of marriage.  The negative is that people stay in abusive or addictive marriages long after it may even be safe.  Divorce is failure and we all fail sometimes even in tragic ways.  In order to escape using the word divorce the Catholic Church comes up with the more convoluted word Annulment.

The Best, Ray and David.

 

  1. Swearing.  The positive is that it involves politeness and respect for others.  Even if I am okay with my anger I do not swear at someone.  The negative is that it tightens us up.  We forget the therapeutic value of cussing, maybe a healthy & fun way of releasing anger.  The healthy Jesuits I lived with certainly partook of this therapy.

 The overall danger in these pieces of advice is that we really get messed up, forgetting two things.  First they are presenting infinite demand and they make no mention of infinite acceptance.

Secondly, where is the God of unconditional love?

 The poor guy in Toronto who blinded himself is an example of how we can mess ourselves up with goofy religion.

    Amos observations :  (from last week's Mass)

    What :  One of the 12 minor prophets, only 9 chapters.

    Who: 
    the book presents the thoughts and observations of Amos, who was a sheep herder
    and a fig farmer.  He was born in the southern kingdom of Judah in a
    little town south of Jerusalem, but he is condemning the people, especially the
    rich, of the northern kingdom, Israel.

    Time: 
    Amos was active around 755 before Christ, but his words and message were
    revised and edited down through the years, especially during the Babylonian
    Captivity, around 555 before Christ.  He lives just before the Syrians
    destroy the northern kingdom of Israel, around 700 before Christ.

    Message: 
    Prayer and sacrifice don’t make up for social injustice and oppression of the
    poor by the rich. 

     Today: 
    God will punish you rich and prosperous for your abuse of the poor.  Amos

    Some of Francis’ points in his homily this morning:

    1.  The first sin
      of the rich man is that he is blind.  He
      came and went every day and did not even see Lazarus at his doorstep.  Wealth can blind us, too.
    2. The second sin of the rich man is that even in Hades
      he still thinks he is significant enough to tell Abraham to order Lazarus to
      warn his 5 brothers.  His self image is
      inflated and blinds him to this character flaw.  Entitlement?
    3. The rich man is condemned not because of his wealth in
      itself, but that because of it he feels self righteous.  The trap of wealth, I am better than that one.
    4. There may be a parallel in Luke’s mind between Lazarus
      and Jesus, which comes out in the talk between the rich man and Abraham.  Jesus was poor, died, and returned to
      life.  Were Lazarus to die and return to
      life, neither would he be believed, any more than Jesus was believed.
    5. There is a play on words with Lazarus.  In ancient languages the name Lazarus could
      be equivalent to Abraham.  Therefore,
      Luke rubs it in: Lazarus may be a personification of Abraham himself, lying on the
      doorstep of the rich man who never sees him.

     The lesson: Who is the Lazarus, who is the poor
    person at your own doorstep?

  • Sunday Homily 1-23-11, 3rd Ordinary Time

    Readings: Isaiah 8, 23-9, 3; Psalm 27, The Lord is my Light and my Salvation; 1 Corinthians 1, 10-13; Matthew 4, 12-23

     Intro to Readings

     The gospel reading today should sound familiar when you hear it, as it is mostly a repeat of our first reading from Isaiah.  In today’s reading Jesus has just heard that John the Baptist has been jailed by Herod and so he decides to head over to Capernaum. 

    Mass Begins 1-23-11 

    The reading describes Capernaum as being in the region of Zebulum and Naphtali.  These places were named after two of the sons of Jacob, he of the ‘twelve tribes’ fame.  Galilee is a very familiar name to us as Jesus spent a whole lot of time there.  This area was the area invaded by the Assyrians in the eight century BC and all of the wealthy and educated people where carried away as slaves.  What was left were the peasants, and so we have this reference to the land left in darkness!

     Welcome to Sienna 1-23-11

    Nazareth was to the southern end of Galilee.  Galilee itself was a rather small and insignificant place compared with Jerusalem in Judea.  Capernaum was a fishing village on the shores of the Sea of Galilee.  It was also close to the Via Maris, which you will hear referred to in the first reading as the seaward road.

     Because of this earlier exile, there was a much greater mix of gentiles in this area.  There was a certain amount of tension between the Jews who lived in Galilee and those in Jerusalem.  They were not considered quite as ‘pure’ due to their constant contact with the gentiles.

    The really important part of the gospel reading is the last line, where we are given Jesus’ message “repent, the kingdom of heaven is at hand”.

     Our second reading from Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians shows what can so easily happen to any small community of believers.  The community is breaking into factions and forgetting its purpose.

  • Sunday Homily 8-24-08, 21st, Ordinary Time

    Readings:  Isaiah 22, 19-23; Psalm 138 (nice); Romans 11, 33-36;  Matthew 16, 13-20.

    Isaiah: Just a reminder that the book of Isaiah is one of the big three prophetic books, Jeremiah & Ezekiel being the other two.  Three writers of the book can be discerned by their characteristic writing styles.

    Bringing Out the Best

    When I was a little kid growing up in Christ the King parish I remember being put off by the negativity, the clericalism, and the apparent dislike of me by the formal pastor and the assistant priests.  When I went to Jesuit, however, I found that the Jesuits seemed to like me and brought out the best in me.

    In today's gospel by Matthew we have the story of Peter being made the head of the new church.  How marvelous it would be if that church community had retained the characteristic of bringing the best out in people, instead of focusing on control, punishment, and fear.  Two comments about this reading.

    First biblical scholars agree that Jesus did not say what is in this little story.  Rather, the Matthean community shaped a highly stylized scene that attempted to establish Peter's position as leader of the new community.  The writer, because he wants to authenticate Peter creates the scenario where Jesus makes Peter The Man.

    Secondly. This past week Rosemary's brother Peter McGinn sent me an article he was publishing about bringing out the best in corporate leadership.  I thought, he is talking about what we are trying to do here in this community.  And how marvelous it would be if the Catholic church brought out the best in people.  He uses the word best as a memnotic, focusing on behavior, emotion, spirit, and thinking in this way.

    1. Behavior.  Build on the person's strengths.  Bill Hammond knows that I can't run because of the couple of compressed disks in my back.  He knows, however, that I have a modicum strength in biking because I work out daily on an air-dyne bike.  He invites me to ride the Hotter 'N Hell, something he did not know I had dreamed about doing for probably about 15 years.  Initially I declined, but his confidence in me as well as my dream combined to help me overcome my fear of the risks.    Build on a person's strengths.

    2. Emotions.  I remember seeing one of the girls in the Olympic gymnastics blow a dismount.  As she walked to the side all the girls on all the teams as well as the coaches hugged and consoled her.  Affirmation even in failure.

    3. Spirit.  Mercenary vs. Marine.  Part of a team or a community.  I was envious Saturday when I would see a large group of riders blow by me en masse.  How fun it is to be part of.  How I take spirit from the group.  I watch the Plano Senior High band practicing while I am filling my tank with water occasionally.  One of the fun things about being a Jesuit was imbibing and sharing the spirit.

    4. Thinking.  Establish and share goals.  I think of the Boy Scouts.  When I was a Scout, we just got together for fun, which was good enough.  Few of the guys were challenged to become Eagles.  In the past years I have seen troops where the leaders help numerous boys to become Eagle scouts.  With help such as that my fun experience in Scouting would also have resulted in me being an Eagle Scout.  Thinking is education & training.

    1 Kings observations

    What

    A continuation of a larger work, 1 & 2 Samuel, plus 2 Kings. 
    This is presented as history, but it is a joining together of legends, fables, folktales, and miracle stories.  I see this called theological history.

    Date

    After the Babylonian captivity, therefore around 555 before Christ.

    Subject

    The book covers 3 events:

            – The end of the life of the Great King David,

            – The story of his glorious son, Solomon, and his building of
    the temple in Jerusalem,

            – The famous division of the state into north and south,
    Israel and Judah, after Solomon’s death and his weak successors.

    Coming in chapter 17 you can guess it talks about the third event, the division of the state. 

    One prophet Elijah is anointing his successor.  The presence of prophets signals what?  Times are bad and Yahweh is not pleased with the people and leadership for allowing the division.

    The Samaritans

    This morning I would like to talk about 2 subjects.  

    First, the Samaritans.  Who were they and why hostility between Jews and them?

    Secondly, I have to tell you about an amazing event that happened to me this week.

    The Samaritans.  These people were and are Jews.  They claim to be descendents of some of those 10 lost tribes.  Remember the lost tribes?

    Take the date 700 years before Christ.  There are the two states, Israel in the north and Judah in the south, going back to the time after Solomon when weak kings lost the unity.

    700 is the date that the Assyrians (the famous Syria, still in the news because of continued fighting) defeated the state of Israel and scattered the Jewish people, intermarrying with many of them.   Some of these Jews survived mostly in Judah.

    During the Babylonian Captivity, 555 before Christ, descendents of some of these people did not go to Babylon.  They were there when the descendents of those Jews taken from Jerusalem returned. 

    Hostility developed between the two groups.   Each group had developed unique religious customs and each group considered the other to be heretical or bad.

    The group supposedly descended from one or more of the 10 lost tribes was called Samaritan.  It is also suspected that some of these Jews intermarried with the conquering Assyrians.  See why Jesus’ followers often act as if the Samaritans are bad.  Remember the story of Jesus talking with the Samaritan woman at the well?  

    We have a similar situation today.  Look at all the Christian sects, Catholic, Baptist, Episcopalian, and others.  Each of these probably considers the others bad.   As Catholic kids we were certainly not allowed into a non-Catholic church.

    Now for the story.  I am a member of Dallas North Rotary, as many of you know.  I don’t eat and I miss a lot of meetings, but I love the other members and have known some of them for 20 years.

    Tuesday I walked into our meeting and was going around greeting everyone already there.  I greeted a lady named Cheryl, who is one of our most active members.  After moving around the room, I was passing her again.   She says to me, “John, wait.” I stop and she sticks a piece of paper in my hand.

    I look and it is a check.  I open it and made out to John Stack Ministries is $1000.  I am stunned and say something like, “What is this?”  She says, “It is for whatever you & your community want.”  She says she has had a good month.  She is a vivacious real estate agent. 

    She is not a Catholic and in the old days she probably would have considered us to be Samaritans, bad. 

    I am humbled by this gift and I will say it again, I am proud to be a member of you people, this community.  It is you who are catching the attention of good people.

  • Sunday Homily 4-22-12, 3rd Easter

     Readings:   Acts 3, 13-19, I know that you acted out of ignorance; Psalm 4, Lord, let your face shine on us; 1 John 2, 1-5, Whoever keeps his word, the love of God is truly perfected in him; Luke 24, 35-48, Peace be with you.

    Acts: A review–

    Author:  Luke, the author of both The Gospel and Acts.  Today we get Luke twice, in the first reading with Acts and in the last reading, today's Gospel. 

    While we are on the subject, Luke's gospel story today is a compliment to last week's gospel story by John.  Both John & Luke find the apostles in a locked room, Jesus appears, and he says, "Peace."  Both focus on the physical, last week on Thomas demanding to see the wounds, this week Jesus eating.  What does he eat?   Why so much focus on the physical?

    Date:  written about 40-60 years after Jesus death, i.e., ca. 70-100 A.D.

    Subject: Two parts.  Part one covers chapters 1-8, which focus on the resurrection, ascension, and Pentecost, plus their effect on the community.  The rest of the book, i.e., chapters 9-28, the focus is on Paul, his conversion & travels.  

    Today's Selection:  

    The scene is this, just like last week.   Peter & John have just healed a lame man at the door of the temple.  The people come rushing to see.  Peter & John say, "Hey, we did not do it."  In fact, Jesus did it and he has been raised from the dead.  This caught the attention of the priests and authorities who had the two arrested and put before the council.  They are released the next day after a warning not to talk about this Jesus.  Then they return to the local community of believers. 

     Today we go back to the time just after the healing of the lame man.  The people have rushed to see the phenomenon and ask Peter & John to explain.  Today's reading is their explanation.

    Where is The Lord Here?

    This morning I want to talk about something that has been tearing up my spirit.  Anybody heard of a little dog named Justice? 

    He was a street dog, a puppy.  He died mercifully a week ago Friday.  Justice was apparently a peaceful, affectionate little puppy running around the streets of Pleasant Grove. 

    One day he had the misfortune to be noticed by some teen boys who were loafing around looking for some amusement.  They decided to amuse themselves with little Justice.  So, as happens occasionally in a group of boys, they began to pester him.

    Things got bad.  One kid put a rope around Justice’s neck and tried to hang him from a fence.  When that did not satisfy them, another boy doused the puppy with charcoal lighter fluid and set him on fire.  He ran around frantically.

    At this point some woman in a nearby apartment ran out with water & an old T shirt to aid Justice.  Someone else called the police and they found Justice shivering & hiding behind an air conditioning compressor. 

    They called an animal shelter who called DFW Rescue Me, because Justice needed intensive care.  A big rig truck driver from Denton got involved and actually shuttled Justice around from his daytime treatment to his nighttime treatment.   To the very end, even when his blood pressure was so low, Justice continued to wag in appreciation his little white tipped tail.

    What would you like to do to those boys?  There is a $5000 reward.

    Luke’s message today describes how the Lord appeared among them two times and said, “Peace be with you.”  Is he present in this event?  I   would like to propose that yes, God is in this event, even as ugly as it is.  I see three possibilities. 

    First, I see God in the woman who had the courage to come out of her apartment and rescue Justice.  She did not know what would happen.  Those boys could have turned on her.  It happens.

    Secondly, I see God in the truck driver who shepherded Justice between his day & night treatment centers.  His name was Wenger.  He is from Denton.  This happened in Pleasant Grove, opposites in the Metroplex.  Wenger showed great kindness to the little street puppy.

    Emma, What happened to the Easter Eggs?

    Finally, the boys. Yes, God is in the boys.  They acted out of their shadow sides, but they are still works of God.  I have worked with kids and adults like this.  Two speculations coming from my experiences.

    First, I bet you when these boys were puppies they, too, were treated badly.  Maybe not set on fire, but hurt & hurt repeatedly to a point where they are responding to the world with anger.  Hurt breeds anger, anger breeds violence.  I want to hurt others because I hurt.

    Secondly, I bet that because of feedback that they are bad, they think they are bad.  And act it out.  The kid has nothing to lose.  He is already a loser.  I thought I was bad when I was a kid and I wasn’t. 

    So, where do you see The Lord in all this?

     Readings: Exodus 17, 8-13; Psalm 121, Our help is from the Lord, who made Heaven & Earth; 2 Timothy 3, 14-4, 2; Luke 18, 1-8 

    Exodus

     Author: Not Moses.  3 sources identified by literary style, points of view, use of Yahweh or Elohim.

    Date: the sources have different possible dates, but 700 & 800 BCE seem to have some foundation.  The Egyptian period itself is thought to be ca. 1250 BCE, during the time of Rameses II.

     Subject: Moses leads the Jewish people out of slavery in Egypt.  Remember how they got there?  The story of Isaac & his 12 sons, his youngest sold to camel drivers by the brothers, etc.

     Our Selection: scene, the desert; the event, the Amalekites attack the Jews.  Yahweh orders Joshua to mow them down with Moses’ supporting him with arms outstretched in blessing.   Not much connection with the Gospel.

    Why do You Pray?

     There is a subdivision in North Dallas called Northwood Hills.  You go north from LBJ up Hillcrest to Belt Line and the subdivision is on both sides of Hillcrest.

     A few years before I departed the Jesuits some residents of Northwood Hills approached me about planting trees in their neighborhood.  I really did not want to go north of LBJ with my 800 gallon trailer.  They persisted and bit by bit, after a trip or two hosted by 2 or 3 couples, I finally agreed.

    We eventually planted ca. 400 trees along Hillcrest & Belt Line, in Fretz Park, and at a couple of elementary schools.  I watered those trees as often as twice a week for 2-3 years.  Ride by there now and the results are beautiful.  I am delighted I did it.

     Does this experience of mine and the parable of the gruff judge and the widow exemplify our relationship with God?   Who knows?  Each of us has our relationship and our expectations of the relationship.  For me, I have my doubts.  Three observations, one like and two dislikes.

     First, I like the lesson in asking for what we want, even from a judge at city hall.  The father of my best buddy when I was a kid used to tell me, “John, you can’t fight city hall.”  Maybe not, maybe so.  But you can certainly ask for what you want—in this life.

     Secondly, what I don’t like: the comparison of God with this grumpy judge who accedes to the widow’s request just so he won’t be bothered.  I have a different, more benevolent image.

    Thirdly, what I don’t like: a false expectation contained in the parable that I can wear down God by my persistence.  I remember my mom’s 9 day novenas.  Probably to save me from hell.  Then I joined the Jesuits and left home and she probably told God that was not quite what she intended. 

     I find it helpful to make that infamous God distinction of mine, the macro-managing God and the micro-managing God.  I don’t see God doing the latter. 

     If God is a micro-manager, I don’t get it at all.  For every person apparently saved, how many thousands, millions have been lost, often with painful, agonizing deaths.  Take for example the Holocaust.  Did those people not beg Yahweh to be saved?  The slaves beaten to death.  Even here is Texas these days, the black men falsely accused and spending decades in prison until DNA proves their innocence.  My friend Tony works with maybe a dozen of these guys at Holy Trinity.

     So, why pray for people like we do?  Our people.  You know them. 

    My observation: I hope some cosmic kinetic energy flows out to make more gentle the life of the person I pray for.  2-3 praying together emanate hopefully more energy. 

    The Northwood Hills folks pestered me until I granted their request, a lesson for all of us in our daily lives.  This may not be a model for our relationship with God.
