Sunday Homily, August 19, 2007, 20th of Ordinary Time

Readings: Jeremiah 38, 4-10; Psalm 40; Hebrews 12, 1-4; Luke 12, 49-53

Jeremiah: this man is one of the big 3 O.T. prophets, along with Isaiah & Ezekiel.  He lives before the Babylonian captivity in the 6th century before Christ. He even predicts the event because he says the people are evil. In the later chapters he foretells the people’s return to Jerusalem.

We meet him just after he has basically told the people that if they want to save their lives, surrender to the Babylonians.  Otherwise they will die.  The officials of the people and the military are steamed. The reading is the result.  Jeremiah was not always happy nor treated well, which is the set up for the gospel.

Division or Peace? Maybe Both

Three times in my life I have caused this kind of division, despite the fact that it was not my intention.  You folks know the three times.  First was when I joined the Jesuits in ’58. Both my parents thought I was nuts, but especially my mom found it difficult. When I entered we guys did not return home for almost any reason.  Only like a funeral for a parent. Christmas, Thanksgiving, all were spent in the Jesuit community.  I never returned home until I had been gone 7 years. And then I came back to Dallas not to visit, but to teach at Jesuit. In those days we never thought about it. But my mom sure did not like it.

The second time my mom was upset was 18 years after I entered and 5 years after I got ordained. I went to East Africa in ’76 and stayed there 10 years, coming home only every three years.  My mom was so upset that she did not talk to the Dallas Jesuits for 5 or 6 years. She always thought one of my best friends who was an assistant provincial had sent me to Tanzania, even though I told her I was invited by the East Africa Jesuits to open a retreat house in Nairobi, Kenya, which I did. 

The third time I created division was, guess: 5/5/05, when I decided to marry. Actually, my mom would have been delighted by this move. Unfortunately she had moved to the other side. However, there were numerous people who disapproved and who still disapprove.

I don’t like this statement, "Do you think I have come to establish peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division." How de we reconcile this with John’s gospel where Jesus says, "I have come to bring you peace," or even last week’s statement, "Do not be afraid any longer"?

A couple of observations.

First, perhaps Luke thought that the God he knows brings division. He is sharing his understanding and putting the words in Jesus’ mouth. I don’t necessarily have that image of God. 

Secondly, this shows how so often the Bible is just contradictory, a lot of positve vs negative.    

All three of these decisions on my part created division and pain, just like the story says. I don’t think God wanted this division, any more than God wants to hurt us. These decisions did, however, bring peace and maturity.  I certainly am a better person because I went through the Jesuit training and spirit.  My sojourn in East Africa was not just an adventure, but a stretching of all my talents. And marriage with Rosemary makes me a more whole priest and therapist, like I have said before.

    Readings: Acts 2, 1-11; Psalm 104, Lord Send our your Spirit, and Renew the Face of the Earth; 1 Corinthians 12, 3-13; John 20, 19-23.

    Pentecost:

    Perspective A: The Catholic Encyclopedia says this feast commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit (or Ghost) upon the Apostles 50 days after the Resurrection.  The root of the word pentecost is 5, like pentagon.

    Perspective B: biblical students point out that this event is one in a series of events that base their timing on the calendar of Jewish liturgical feasts.  They point out how Mark, the first to write a gospel, started this process by providing Jesus stories appropriate to the first 6 months of the liturgical calendar of synagogue celebrations.  Remember the followers of Jesus spent about 50 years as Jews worshipping in the temple and synagogue, until 88 C.E., when a split occurred.

    Luke, our writer today, built his gospel on Mark and expanded it to fill the whole liturgical calendar year.  Mark only covered about 6 months.  Thus, Luke is the only one who presents the Pentecost story and he puts it together with the Jewish feast of Shavout which takes place 50 days after Passover.  Shavout celebrates Moses receiving the 10 commandments 50 days after the exodus from Egypt.  All symbolic events. 

    Note another example: Mark tied the crucifixion to the Passover, the feast commemorating the Jews escape from Egypt.

    Whatever we think took place at this event called Pentecost, for me it seems like it was at least a moment of light, enlightenment.

    Pentecost: An Enlightenment

     

     

    A week or so ago I put together something I have never done before.  I bought a dozen roses at Tom Thumb, took them home to Rosemary to help me arrange them in her artistic way, and drove up to Plano Presbyterian to give a gift of thanks to the staff on the 8th floor.

     

     

    I confess I waited until I could walk well without a cane so I could show off for everyone who had helped me out.

    The experience was touching and a bit anti-climactic.  Anti-climactic because I ended up going on a Saturday instead of a work day.  This was because the charge nurse and the nurse who was charged with my care got her schedule changed from a Friday to a Saturday. 

     

     

    Being a Saturday, the staff of nurses and physical therapists that I had come to appreciate were mostly off.  In fact, the hall that had been such a beehive of activity when I was there was totally quiet. 

     

     

    Why did I do this?  Because I had acquired this deep appreciation of life and people in that hospital and the recuperation months afterward.  This enlightenment is what I think Pentecost is all about.

    What touched me even more was when I gave my charge nurse the roses. She told that she and her colleagues often hear about one of their patients doing well after they return home.  But in all her years working as a nurse, this was the first time a patient had returned with a gift.  This, too, was a Pentecost moment.

    Says Rick, "You missed my birthday party yesterday, but I am still celebrating today.  Welcome in, Everybody."

     

    Readings: 

    Jeremiah 1, 4- 5, 17-19,   Before I formed you in the womb I knew you.

    Psalm 71,  I will sing of your salvation.

    1 Corinthians 12, 31-13 4-13,  As the body is one.

    Luke 4,  21-30,  Today this passage is fulfilled in your hearing.

     

     This morning we will read the Gospel first, then Jeremiah, and finally Corinthians.  I want to highlight Corinthians, it is so special.   The homily will come after the first paragraph, before the special treatise on Love.

    Jeremiah observations:

    Who:  One of the Big 3 and my second favorite behind Isaiah, whom we will hear from next Sunday.  Why a favorite: because he shares his feelings with gusto. 

    When:  you can guess it, before and during the Babylonian Captivity.  Notice how much prophetic energy is concentrated around this one event?  Shows how big it was in Jewish history.  Keep 555 before Christ as the beacon date.

    What: you can guess this, too.  Criticism of behavior, warning of punishment from God, and eventually a better day.

    What today: Jeremiah’s call by God to be his man, really Everyperson’s call to be God’s special.  This call theme carries through our next 2 readings, especially the next one, The Big One.

    A Special Reading, 1 Corinthians

    Years ago when I used to do a  lot of weddings, like at St Marks,  I would hear this treatise on Love and I would groan, ‘Not again.’

    While still at St. Marks, all of a sudden at another wedding, I tuned in to the reading.  Love is patient.  Love is kind.  That applies to me.  I could be more patient and more kind.  I could be more loving.  (Don’t ask Rosemary)

    Equally welcoming is Dear Jan who arranges communion for everybody.

     

    Right around this time there was an instruction from the diocese or Fr. Smythe, ‘Don’t touch the kids.’  I thought about this and realized that I was not hugged enough when I was a little boy.  For one thing my mom was sick a lot and even had some operations.  I remember being taken in by some family friends and being homesick big time when I was a little guy, maybe pre-school.

    So, once ordained & home from East Africa, I remember one Sunday standing in the entrance to the cafetorium ready to begin the 10:30 Mass.  I decided right then that I will continue to hug all these kids to show them they are loveable and good stuff.  Maybe they will think God really loves them.  A lot of those kids thought I was God once I suited up, so their parents said.

    To send this message is also why I used to give kids, and, in fact everybody, two or three Hershey kisses whenever they came to me for reconciliation, especially for first confessions. 

    The side effect of this, of course, was that my line went on forever and poor Deacon Mike had to stay late to shut down the church.  Everybody else was long gone.  I just wanted to say, ‘Kid you are not bad.  God thinks you are good and a neat kid.’

    The Book of Numbers

    The fourth book of the Pentateuch.  It leaves us with the impression of a carefully structured and organized religious society moving through history under the sustaining and guiding hand of God.  It is a complex collection of historical, legal and liturgical traditions spanning a period of about a thousand years! 

    An outline would identify three broad divisions of the book: The sojourn at Sinai, chapter 1-10 covers the last 19 days the Israelites spent at Sinai.

    The second section deals with the journey from Sinai to Moab, chapter 10-22 and covers a span of about 38 years. 

    The third section, chapters 22-36, covers events in Moab  over a period of 5 months. 

    Today’s reading is from the beginning of the second section, when the people are just starting out on their journey.  Moses is getting concerned with the responsibility of all of the people, so God shares the spirit, which is on Moses among 70 elders, even two who were not part of the group gathered around the Tent.

    The Letter of Saint James

    This is the final Sunday  (Hooray!) for the second reading to come from the Letter of St. James (Santiago de Compostella), which we have listened to for the past five weeks.  In the reading today the mood is very stark!  “Your wealth has rotted away”.  The audience for this letter is the communities outside of Jerusalem.

    Again, remember the letter is a collection of moral observations and instructions, and in today’s reading James’ does not have much that is positive to say about the rich.  The bigger context is to encourage the Christians who are suffering at the hands of the powerful.  James reminds his audience that Jesus is coming again very soon!  Immediately following today’s reading he says “Be patient brothers until the Lord’s coming.”

    If your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out  (the homily that I passed on because I accidentally read the wrong Gospel for today.)

     

    Two comments about this line in the reading.

    First.  I spent the years 1968-72 studying theology in Toronto.  We had a lot of gray days in Toronto seeing as it is on the northern shore of Lake Ontario.

    One of those days, the news came out in the Toronto newspaper, the Globe & Mail, that a young guy had intentionally blinded himself.  Guess why.  Yep, he read this line in Mark and figured his eyes were a source of temptation.  Doing what?  Maybe just girl watching.

    I remember all the guys (there were around a hundred of us) were repelled by the news.  There was a gut level response that what this poor guy did was sick.  It was self mutilation combined with religious extremism.

    That for me is the negative.  Any way it can be positive?   As a motivator?  Yes.  I’m reminded of how important self motivation is to all of us.  I am reminded by the St. Marks Boy School running by our house in the morning before school.  I am reminded by Tom & Paul & Carrie running their marathons.   I am inspired by Richard losing weight & keeping it off when told he could get diabetic..   I am reminded at the JCC (Jewish Community Center) 6 AM spin class where Haya, a little lady older even than I am who rides with a slightly bummed right shoulder M, W, F. 

    I look upon God’s position on this as infinite demand, yes, coupled with infinite acceptance.

    What do you need?  Motivation?  Look around you.

  • Sunday Homily, November 11, 2012, 32nd Ordinary Time B

     Readings:    

    1 Kings  17, 10-16,   When we have eaten it, we shall die.

    Psalm 146,   Praise the Lord, my soul.

    Hebrews 9, 24-28,   He will bring salvation to those who eagerly await him.

    Mark 12, 38-44,  A poor widow came and put in two small coins.

     Kings:

         Author & date of composition: the work is a compilation of numerous sources put together near the end of the Babylonian Captivity, ca. 550.

        Subject Matter: 1 Kings is part of a 4 book work that includes 1 & 2 Samuel and 1 & 2 Kings.  The 3 kings are Saul, David, and his son, Solomon.

     The work begins with Samuel, the last great judge, continues through the lives of the 3 kings, and finally shows how Solomon’s sons’ squabbles led to the division of the Jewish nation into two states, north & south, Israel & Judah.  Both states were defeated and the people of Judah taken into the Babylonian Captivity.  It ends on a high note when Cyrus of Persia defeats Nebuchadnezzar in Babylon, and allows the Jews to return to Jerusalem.

        The Theme: you be good, good things happen to you; you be bad, bad things happen to you.

        Our selection: 2 great prophets lived when the kingdom divided, Elijah & Elisha.  They criticized the bad ways of the sons.  In this selection, Elijah tells the king he is going to send a drought to the king's land.  Then Elijah goes away & meets a poor, starving widow with a son.  Watch what happens.  This is setting us up for a little widow in the gospel.

    I want to talk about a marvelous event I saw take place on a Southwest airplane.  

    Last week Rosemary & I went to Chicago to visit a friend of mine since all the way back to our days at Christ the King grade school.  My friend, Pete, he and I parted after high school and we saw each other maybe half a dozen times all these years up until recently.

    When I entered the Jesuits in Louisiana, he entered the F.B.I. and worked his whole life in and out of Chicago.  He was always athletic and last year told me he ran the Chicago Marathon 10 times.

    So we fly Southwest to Chicago on Tuesday and return Wednesday.  The visit goes fine and we prepare to return home.  When we boarded in Chicago we were a bit nervous because the plane homeward bound was booked solid and we were on standby.  We make it okay.

    Before arriving at Love Field we make a quick stop in Kansas City.  Half the plane empties, and refills just short of full.  Rather quickly all the new passengers are seated.  The overhead bins are stuffed full and closed.

    Rosemary and I are seated two thirds of the way back, together this time.  Everything is copasetic and ready for departure.

     At this point down the aisle comes a slightly heavy lady.  She is pulling a roll on, max size. 

    When she gets to us she sees a flight attendant approaching from the back.   “Where can I place my bag?” she asks.

    “I think all the bins are full, Ma’am.  Would you like to check your bag?”

    “No,” responds the woman somewhat bluntly. 

    Meanwhile the flight attendant is patiently opening and trying to find space, but this lady’s roll on is not small.  And her posture says she is not backing down.  The flight attendant is pleasant but starting to get a bit frustrated.

    We are at crisis point, I think to myself. 

    Then, the most amazing thing happens.  The woman in the aisle seat right across from me and Rosemary says to the flight attendant, “You may check my bag that is overhead and put her bag in my place.” 

    I could not believe.

    The woman then mentions that she has $20,000 worth of equipment in her bag and she cannot stow it.   It would have helped to know this from the start.  However, the bag in the bin went underneath and the late arriving bag went in the bin.

    I talk about this because the woman who offered her bag resembled the two women in the stories.  Both women gave a lot of themselves.

    Three observations.

    First, I bet a lot of parishioners are hearing how they should be donating to their parish like this little lady in Mark.   It is a set up.  And it is a really narrow approach to the story.

    Secondly, watch out for Mark’s use of infinite demand.  Am I supposed to likewise contribute all I have, my whole livelihood?  Not quite, which leads to my next point.


    Thirdly, we are called to help and to contribute, not just money, but so much else, my roll on, my time, my positive strokes of others, my efforts to help people recover from a hurricane, like the St. Bonaventure kids and staff are doing. 

    Of course, when leaving that plane I complimented the lady on her offering her roll on to be stowed and I asked the flight attendant her name so I could send in a compliment to corporate, which I did.  That was my small offering to the event.

  • Sunday Homily 10-10-10, 28th Ordinary Time

     Readings: 2 Kings 5, 14-17; Psalm 98, The Lord has revealed to The Nations His Saving Power; 2 Timothy 2, 8-13; Luke 17, 11-19. 

                                                      

    Twenty eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time- Intro to the readings.

     

    Our first reading today is from the second book of Kings, and was written about the year 560BCE.  The Book of Kings was written at a time of great crisis.  In 587 the Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzer and his armies had attacked the southern kingdom, Judah, and destroyed the Temple in Jerusalem, and taken the Jewish people back to Babylon as slaves. 

     

     The big question for the Jews was “where was their God in all of this?"  What about the promises he had made on Mount Sinai?  The 400 year rule of the Davidic line of kings has come to an end.  The purpose of the writer is to tell the people that it is not God who has been unfaithful, but the people.  He  encourages them to see that God is still faithful to his people. 

     

    Our short story in today’s reading fits with the gospel in that someone saw that the gospel was about lepers and so find something about lepers in the Old Testament!  Recall that in those days most gods were seen as local, and so we find Naaman, who is a high ranking general from Damascus, where Paul was heading when he had his vision, asking Elisha if he can take two mule loads of the earth back with him.  He has been cured by Elisha’s god and wants that god to be with him when he returns home.  To get the full impact of this reading I want to read to you the piece which leads up to our reading today:

     

    Naaman, the army commander of the king of Aram, was highly esteemed and respected by his master, for through him the LORD had brought victory to Aram. But valiant as he was, the man was a leper.  Now the Arameans had captured from the land of Israel in a raid a little girl, who became the servant of Naaman's wife.  "If only my master would present himself to the prophet in Samaria," she said to her mistress, "he would cure him of his leprosy." 

     

     Naaman went and told his lord just what the slave girl from the land of Israel had said.  "Go," said the king of Aram. "I will send along a letter to the king of Israel." So Naaman set out, taking along ten silver talents, six thousand gold pieces, and ten festal garments.  To the king of Israel he brought the letter, which read: "With this letter I am sending my servant Naaman to you, that you may cure him of his leprosy." 

     

     When he read the letter, the king of Israel tore his garments and exclaimed: "Am I a god with power over life and death, that this man should send someone to me to be cured of leprosy? Take note! You can see he is only looking for a quarrel with me!"  When Elisha, the man of God, heard that the king of Israel had torn his garments, he sent word to the king: "Why have you torn your garments? Let him come to me and find out that there is a prophet in Israel."  Naaman came with his horses and chariots and stopped at the door of Elisha's house.  The prophet sent him the message: "Go and wash seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will heal, and you will be clean."

    But Naaman went away angry, saying, "I thought that he would surely come out and stand there to invoke the LORD his God, and would move his hand over the spot, and thus cure the leprosy.  Are not the rivers of Damascus, the Abana and the Pharpar, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them and be cleansed?" With this, he turned about in anger and left.

     

    But his servants came up and reasoned with him. "My father," they said, "if the prophet had told you to do something extraordinary, would you not have done it? All the more now, since he said to you, 'Wash and be clean,' should you do as he said."

     

      

     

    Twenty eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time – Homily

     

    On the surface today’s gospel message seems simple enough, don’t forget to say, “Thank you”.  But because I have two weeks to reflect on the story, and also because a good friend of mine whom I was ordained with years ago told me about a great homily he had heard about the ten lepers, I had to pry deeper.  My friend now lives in England and after spending thirty minutes on the phone with him the other day, neither one of us could come up with what that original ‘great homily’ was all about!  I feel there is more to Luke’s account than a lesson in ‘good manners’.

     

    The story itself is classical Luke.  Jesus is still heading towards Jerusalem, although the geographic clues, which Luke gives at the beginning of the story, tell us that Luke doesn’t have a clue of the geography of the area!  Ten lepers meet with Jesus and are sent off to be inspected and declared free of their leprosy.  Only one comes back to say thanks. 

     

     There are several things we need to keep in mind.  The one who came back was a Samaritan.  Luke seems to have a thing for Samaritans; we have the “good Samaritan, the Samaritan woman at the well, and now the Samaritan leper.  What we can easily forget is that the Samaritan would not be going to Jerusalem to be declared “cured’ by the Temple priests, he would have gone to Mount Gerizim, that was their place of worship. 

     

     When the nine Jewish lepers would have been declared clean, there is explicit instructions for a thanksgiving offering clearly spelt out in Leviticus chapter 13: “30And he shall offer, of the turtle-doves or pigeons such as he can afford, 31one* for a sin-offering and the other for a burnt-offering, along with a grain-offering; and the priest shall make atonement before the Lord on behalf of the one being cleansed. 32This is the ritual for one who has a leprous* disease, who cannot afford the offerings for his cleansing.”

     

    What I would like to read into today’s story is the following.  The nine lepers who went to the temple in Jerusalem were doing exactly what the Law of Moses told them to do.  Of course they were thankful, and did what the Law prescribed.

     

    Whenever Jesus seems to run afoul of the Jewish leaders it is because they are trying to enforce the Law and he is ignoring it!  His laws are fairly simple, “Love God and Love your neighbor”.  Too often we have been raised to “follow the rules”.  As I have said recently, we have become slaves to the rules.  Vatican II has invited us to act responsibly and be accountable for our own actions.  Too often people need the security of “following the rules”.  I came across the following story from Margaret Silf in the current issue of the magazine “America”.

                                                                                                                         

     

    A bewildered traveler was once walking in a strange country. Feeling fearful, without map or compass, he came to the junction of three trails. There was no signpost to indicate where any of them might lead. As he sat on a rock, contemplating the problem, a young boy came by and wished him a bright “Good Morning!” The traveler replied, “And a very good morning to you, son. Can you help me, please? I’m not from these parts, and I’m lost. Where does that trail over there lead?” “Sorry, sir, I don’t know” said the boy.    “Well, what about that second trail there?”  “Sorry, sir,” replied the boy, “I don’t know.” By now the traveler was getting impatient. “O.K., where does this third trail go?”  “Sorry sir, I don’t know,” came the cheerful reply.  Now seriously frustrated, the traveler snapped back, “For goodness sake, boy, what do you know?”  “I know I’m not lost, sir,” came the confident rejoinder, as the boy went on his way. 

                                                                                                                                    

     

    It is that ability to be comfortable with not knowing, with being able to be your own person, make your own decisions after reflection that come to me as the point in the story today.  The Samaritan leper was not bound by the urgency to get to his priest to be declared clean, but decided to go back to Jesus to say thank you.  He would then still need to go the temple at Mount Gerizim.  It was his ability to act for himself and not be determined by the rules, which saved him.

                                                                                                                     

     

     

    St Ambrose, the third century theologian uses a very simple analogy which I think might have value for us today in the rather turbulent times we live in.  He says we need to look at the little fish in the big ocean and try to be like that.  The fish has learned to swim in calm waters and when the sea is raging.  Neither sea bothers the fish, it is happy in its environment.  Most of us would rather the sea be calm, but it isn’t right now, not on any front.  All the rules are being challenged, all our solid truths are being questioned and it feels like the traveler at the intersection of three roads. 

                                                                                                                       

    Remember the lovely story of the apostles in the boat during the stormy sea.  Why were you afraid, did you not know I am with you! 

    This is the message I get from today’s simple story.

    What are they: a collection of moral & religious teachings in the form of pithy sayings.  For example: "Better to eat a dry crust of bread with peace of mind than to have a banquet in a house full of trouble" (17, 1); "Being cheerful always keeps you healthy" (17, 22).

    Some a bit tough: "Don't hesitate to discipline a child.  A good beating won't kill him" (23, 12).

    Some amusing: "A nagging wife is like water going drip-drip-drip" (27, 15); "Better to live on the roof than to share the house with a nagging wife" (25, 24). 

    Author: Maybe Solomon is behind chapters 1-29.  Most likely a compilation.

    Date: Ca. 300 BCE is considered a possibility with material coming from as far back as 900, during the time of Solomon.

    Taking Care of the House Wisdom Built

    In honor of it being mid-August and summer vacation time, even though it is rapidly coming to an end, I have homily light this morning.  Just a simple lesson I learned, again, this week.

    When was the last time you had no running water in your house?  Or even no a/c?

    This past week Rosemary & I had no running water in our house for one day and two nights, which seemed like an eternity.

    And, of course, Genevieve says,  "Hi Everybody, thanks for coming to see me.  Nice to be here."  

     

    A month ago or, even, maybe 6 weeks ago, I thought I was hearing water running in our house.  I could only hear it in the bathroom I use when I get up, like 4:00 in the morning.  It is so quiet at that hour that I can easily hear unusual sounds.  I checked the toilet stoppers in the other two bathrooms.  No noise.   During the day I could not hear the noise because of other noises.  With the a/c blower running, I could not hear the noise except maybe just a tiny bit.

    I told Rosemary I wanted to check the water meter at the street one time when we both were riding around White Rock Lake.  I would see if the meter moved.  I set up the read, then forgot when we came home and we used the sinks.

    Can't drink wine?  No problem.  Jan has you covered, grape juice.  

     

    Then, I sort of forgot the noise.  But I continued to hear it. 

    Then one morning, I went to the water heater closet.  The noise was much stronger.   So I finally did the water meter check and the dial had moved in a two hour period when we were away.  So I told Rosemary that we have a water leak and it may be the water heater.

    We call Levy, the company we have used for year.  A guy comes the next day, turns off the water heater, and tells me it is not the water heater.  Which means it is under the floor.  “Are you on pier & beam or slab,” he asks me.  Pier & beam, thanks. 

    So he has to call for another guy to go through the small door in the floor.  The guy does, says there is a lake down there, and he cannot get to the leak which is right under the water heater, but in a place too small for him to get to.  “We’ll send Junior tomorrow, because he can get in these narrow places.  Meanwhile, turn off the water at the street.”

    Unfortunately, Junior cannot come the next day, Tuesday.  He is booked.  We have to wait until Wednesday morning, 8:00 A.M.

    So, yes, we have no running water from Monday afternoon, through Tuesday night, and into Wednesday.  I filled some buckets before I turned the water off.  But, How did our ancestors live without running water.  Sinks, showers, and toilets.

    From Chris, the anything at all to get out of going to Yosemite, a torn tendon in his foot.  6-9 months recovery. 

     

    We finally got water, but not until Wednesday afternoon.  I was ready to hug Junior, who was not so small, but agile.  I wanted to thank the running water gods on my knees.

    I really learned a lesson.  Gratitude for the conveniences I take for granted every day.  Water, a/c, electricity, to name just three.
