Reminder for Sunday, May 24, 2015, Pentecost

Guess who has arrived, Everybody! Welcome into Our World, Vivian Grace. You are beautiful and perfect. Tell your mommy & daddy, "Congratulations." Arrival was Tuesday, 8 lbs.

Welcome: Catholic Mass with coffee and juice and pastries, both bought and home-made, after Mass.

Time: 9:30; Celebrate with the Community & Stack and Mike homilizing.

Place: Vines High School, Plano, 15th between Custer & Independence.

Genevieve, too, says, "Hi, Vivian, Welcome. But, guess what, I got more hair than you."

Acts: a review–

Author: Luke, the author of The Acts & The Gospel

Date: ca. 50 years after the death of Jesus

Our Selection: Believe it or not, on this the last Sunday we read from Acts, we are now back to chapter 1 after getting as far as chapters 9 & 10. What is going on is this. The chapter opens with an introduction and then a description of the Ascension, Jesus going up in the sky. Apparently the event took place about a half mile outside Jerusalem on the Mt. of Olives.

Afterward, all the community come together in the room they had been hiding in. About 120 are present and Peter gets up to speak. We read Peter's words.

Victoria, also, says, "Come in, Folks."

John's letter: There is a great line in this selection. See if you can spot it when you hear it. I'll tell you after the reading, but a hint, it is the last line.

Our World, Good or Bad?

I like the line in 1 John which says that God is love. This seems to go contrary to what our ancestors believed because they present a vision of a god who is certainly not into unconditional love. I would like to believe God is loving.

However, there is another line in John’s gospel that I want to talk about this morning, the line that says we do not belong to this world. Like, is the world bad? What do you think? Is the world bad or good and do we belong or not?

I propose that we do belong and that the world is good. We make it better because we belong. A story.

One morning recently I walked into the J (Jewish Community Center) at 5:30 to do my spin class. As I walk in, another rider whom I like, Mike, comes in and we walk together down a long hallway to the room with the 25 stationary bikes.

Somehow we get talking about his dad. Mike is one of 12 kids and the family has done well. The family came from Europe during the time of Hitler.

When you live in Seattle, you know how to light candles, Annabelle & Oscar, Gloria and Eric.

At one point he tells me that during the holocaust his dad lost 70 to 80 first cousins.

I am stunned and shocked. I have never known a person who has this experience in their family. In fact, I have never known in my life so many Jewish people. It is privilege and a pleasure.

Mike’s story gave me two thoughts. First, I was reminded of how horrible a time it was during the reign of Hitler and the 3^rd Reich. A person living then, especially a Jewish person, could easily see the world as bad.

When you swim and dance, you can do anything. Georgie is ready.

My second thought was that Mike was an amazement, not bitter, not seeking revenge, but a person who presents himself as peaceful, friendly, and accepting of the events that took place in his family. You know me, I actually got choked up with him when we talked a bit more after the spin class. Mike chooses to see the world as good.

Despite all the evidence to the contrary, I propose that the world is good, is beautiful, because of three phenomena, people, nature, and events.

Cole, What are you doing up here this morning? Oh, yes, it is cupcake time for birthday boys.

Mike makes the world good, Romeos make the world good (sometimes, maybe), you people make the world good and beautiful. The people I go camping with in Yosemite also make the world good and beautiful, at least some of them.

Nature? I find the beauty of Yosemite so overwhelming I have to go back every year. I can find a beautiful world sitting in a rocking chair on our back porch having a cup of coffee early in the morning, while I gaze at the grass & trees in our yard.

Events? What about the marvel of our Sunday get togethers? I go crazy over the beauty of Ragbrai, that bike ride I make the end of July west to east across Iowa, along with 15 thousand other crazies. Talk about a people event.

Acts: Another review–

Author: Luke, who wrote both the Gospel and Acts

Date: ca. 40-50 years after the death of Jesus

Our selection: This same selection was read on Easter Sunday. What is happening is this. Last Sunday we began the second half of Acts, from chapter 9 to the end. Last week's reading had to do with Paul returning to the community in Jerusalem after he had his conversion experience on the road to Damascus.

This week we get into chapter 10 which focuses on two characters: Peter and a Gentile (non-Jew) captain in the Roman army named Cornelius. Cornelius was supposed to be a good man and he has a voice call him, "Cornelius." "What is it, sir?" he answers. The voice tells him to go a town called Joppa and talk with a man named Peter. Cornelius sends two servants.

Emma & Beth, also, say, "Hi, Everybody."

Meanwhile in Joppa Peter has that vision we talked about Easter Sunday: a sheet coming down from the sky with a multitude of animals. Many of the animals are considered ritually impure by Jews. Peter is told by a voice to eat from these animals, but Peter refuses. While this is going on the two servants arrive and the voice tells Peter to go with them. Peter arrives at Captain Cornelius' house and that is where we take up the story.

Luke is interested here not so much in history as in convincing his readers that the Gentiles as well as Jews are included in the new religion.

Author(s): The old belief that David composed all 150 Psalms is just myth. The reality: many people and groups of people composed the psalms over centuries.

Purpose: songs of gratitude, sorrow, pain, and longing to be sung by the Jewish people, especially in the temple and later in the synagogue. Special songs were composed for feast days like passover and the feast of lights, to name just two.

A Mother’s Day Story

I would like to tell you a Mother’s Day story this morning. This is a “hope you don’t have a kid like this” story. And if you do, maybe it will give you a little hope.

I admit that I have told this story at least once during the 15 or so years I was working at St. Mark’s. I don’t think I have told the story here. If you have already heard it, visit the coffee shop in the back with the kids.

The story took place many years ago. It was a chilly, damp, gray day in probably November. It was a Saturday. Myself and maybe 5-6 of my buddies from Christ the King grade school took the city buses downtown to watch a movie. At most we were 7^th grade, 11 or 12 years old.

There used to be 3-4 theaters downtown, the Majestic, the Palace, and others. There was a bus line down Preston Road near my house in University Park and another on Airline, coming along the SMU campus, west side, the Hillcrest side. We used both bus lines because some of the guys lived further east in University Park.

So we go to the movie. We come out, and somewhere, probably at a dime store (remember those?), we buy water pistols. Then we race around town and run in and out of the department stores, like Neiman’s, having water pistol fights.

Finally, about 4:30, we get on our buses, some on the Airline bus, myself and another guy on the Preston bus.

We get off at my corner, Stanford St., and walk the 2 blocks to my house. In my back yard I had built a fort some years earlier. It was on the west side of our house against the west side picket fence. The fence was against a hedge about 7 feet tall, which ran along the driveway to the garage of our neighbors’ house, Mr. & Mrs. Barnes.

My friend & I went in the fort and hung out. At one point Mr. & Mrs. Barnes walked along their driveway and got into their car in the garage. My friend & I climbed onto the roof of the fort.

Mr. & Mrs. Barnes started backing their car, a white Cadillac, out the driveway. She was dressed formally and he was in a tux, if I remember correctly. Mr. Barnes’ head was slightly out the window of his car, looking back.

And to J.T.

You guessed it, folks. As they passed by us, we leaned over and let loose with our water pistols.

Suddenly I knew I was in deep doo doo. Mr. Barnes backed past the hedge, stopped, got out, and walked over to our front door. We ran around the opposite side of our house, went across the street, and hid in the bushes. At that point, my buddy took off.

After Mr. Barnes finished talking with my mom, he left, and I was ready to go back downtown and move into The Bridge, claiming I was homeless. Trouble was, The Bridge had not yet been built. I had to go home, which I finally did.

And even to Fred.

My mom? She was so mad! Actually, I think she spanked me with her hair brush. It was probably a useless gesture, because I was a little big for it to do much harm. Either way, I felt like a really bad kid. During the next 6 years I was quite capable of equally dumb acts. And you wonder why I thought I better get in the Jesuits 6 years later or I was going to hell?

Shonda, Bethany, Beth, Michelle, Mary, Erin Pack, Erin McClurg, & Cathy and all you moms and grandmoms with young kids, I pray that you don’t have the same challenges my mom had. Happy Mother’s Day.

Welcome Home Special Sunday for Mary Ellen

Readings:

Acts 9, 26-31,  The Church was at peace.

Psalm 22,    I will praise you, Lord, in the assembly of your people.

1 John 3, 18-24,   Let us love not in word or speech, but in deed and truth.

John 15, 1-8, I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. A metaphor, the vine and the branches.

                           Brooklyn says, "Hi, Everybody, Welcome in."

Acts reminders:

Author: Luke, the same who wrote the gospel. He was an educated, urbane Jew.

Date: the years 75-80

Subject: This is a travel log, detailing the spread of Christianity from Jerusalem to Rome and the Mediterranean in between.

Today: Paul is the subject of this week's selection. It describes how the community in Jerusalem was initially scared of Paul.

            Genevieve says, "Hello, Everybody, Nice to see you again. I gained 1 pound since last Sunday, now 7 pounds."

Love not in word or speech?

The line in today’s readings that caught my attention was in the letter from John. Let us love not in word or speech, but in deed and truth. I have no problem with showing love in deed. But I have a problem with discounting the impact of words of appreciation and love.

An example.

It was probably 1988-89. My mom was still living in the house on Tulip Lane, where Rosemary & I now live. My sister had not yet moved in to be with my mom. I was just back from East Africa for about a year and a half. I was living at Jesuit & working on Lemmon Avenue at the Pastoral Counseling Center. My mom would die in 2-3 years.

My mom and I are in the car. I am driving. Mom has an appointment at Dedman Hospital, LBJ around Marsh on the north side.   I don’t know what for, but she was going to spend a night or two.

I am driving west on LBJ. At some point, my mom pats me on the right leg and says to me, “I’m proud of you.”

Folks, I am about 48, almost 50 years old. I have spent 30 years in the Jesuits living all over the place. I have even just spent 10 years in East Africa and survived quite well. That spoken compliment from my mom really moved me. I can see the scene and feel the emotion just as strongly today as ever.

Spoken compliments, spoken words of thanks, spoken “I love you’s” are so powerful. They give life and they give inner peace.

        Anybody around here have a Kentucky Derby Bonnet? Harper says,               "Check out my Grandmother."

When was the last time you thanked somebody, complimented them, or told them you love them?
