     True?   (from Joplin, MO)

Monday at the shelter I saw a young man eating who was obviously upset and weeping. I went over and talked to him in an effort to comfort him. In the course of conversation I asked what he had lost. His answer was …terrific. He said, "I have lost any selfishness that I had before. I have seen destruction and good people giving of themselves to help those who were hurt. I will never be the same as before

If you can start the day without caffeine,

If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,

If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles,

If you can eat plain food every day and be grateful for it,

     True?

This is my creed: For man the vast marvel is to be alive. For man as for flower and beast and bird the supreme triumph is to be most vividly, most perfectly alive. Whatever the unborn and the dead may know they cannot know the beauty, the marvel of being alive in the flesh. The dead may look after the afterward. But the magnificent here and now of life in the flesh is ours alone, and ours only for a time. We ought to dance with rapture that we should be alive and in the flesh and part of the living incarnate cosmos.
