Sunday Homily 4-12-09, Easter

Readings: Acts 10, 34-43; Psalm 118 (This the Day the Lord had made; let us Rejoice and be Glad); Colossians 3, 1-4; Mark 16, 1-7 (from Saturday night readings)

Easter Mass 4-12-09

Acts: 

Author: Most likely Luke, who wrote the Gospel with his name and who followed and copied some of Mark's material. 

Date: ca. 70-100 A.D., therefore ca. 40 years after the death of Jesus. 

Subject: the ministry of Paul & the 12 Apostles after the death of Jesus.

        Chapters 1-8 deal with the Resurrection, Ascension, & Pentecost (Holy Spirit)

        Chapters 8- 28 deal with Paul's conversion & ministry.

Today's selection: Two visions/dreams have just occurred:

        1. Cornelius, a captain in the Roman army and a Gentile, has a vision in which he is instructed to go to a town called Joppa and talk with a man named Peter.

        2.  Peter has a vision in which a sheet held by its 4 corners comes down and is full of all kinds of animals.  A voice says, "Eat."  Peter refuses because of the law of ritual impurity, i.e., some animals are ritually impure and it is prohibited to eat them.  But the voice insists.  At this point three of Cornelius' people arrive and invite him to come to Cornelius' house.  This vision symbolizes that even Gentiles who are ritually impure are invited to the new Christian community.

Our selection takes up just after Peter arrives are Cornelius' house, finds a group of Cornelius' friends, is invited to speak to them, and he begins.  The following is what he says to the group of Gentiles gathered in Cornelius' house.

Meaning of the Word Easter: the origin of the use of Easter seems lost in history.  Probably not from Latin, which uses pasqua.  Probably not coming from a German goddess of spring, which some have suggested.  May have emerged from early Celtic converts (British Isles), who wanted to use their own words for Christian feasts, rather than Latin words.

The Easter Event Today

I think it was last Tuesday morning.  I had come out into the yard in front of our house to let Aviana do her business.  Suddenly around the corner comes a little black Prius which I recognize.  The window comes down and one of Aviana's favorite neighbors stops to give her a little loving. 

The neighbor who is so friendly asks how we are all doing and was I getting the spring weddings going.  I said that, yes, we had weddings for all the weekends of May except one and that one weekend we had two weddings.  I also mentioned that I was looking forward to a fun Easter Sunday with an Easter egg hunt for the kids.

She then mentions that Lent has passed by in a flash and that she has paid no attention to it and really did nothing special.  Am I hearing maybe some minor Catholic guilt?  I'm also thinking to myself that this woman is just terrific as she is.  She does not need to do anything special for Lent.  I mean she loves Aviana and she is friendly to me.  That in itself is extraordinary.  But she also goes back & forth in front of our house it must be a dozen times a day ferrying her 4 kids to numerous events.  On top of that, she teaches at SMU. 

I thought about this friendly lady as I started looking around in my daily life for a recent Easter event.  You know what I think an Easter event is.  It is something or someone which gives me greater peace and life. 

Good Friday 1, 4-12-09

Initially as I looked back over the past six weeks since we started Lent, I thought of the week I spent in Galveston with the 50 kids from St. Bonaventure U. in Buffalo, NY.  That was a dramatic Easter event for me. 

Way back I had talked about making Lent a time of service and greater sensitivity.  I hit the jackpot with the Galveston trip.   The generosity and desire of those kids to donate their spring break to service gave me a ton of peace and life.  I still feel the effect of them in my life.

I am aware that I lucked out with the Galveston trip.  Just to be able to get away for the week.  Like Rosemary who is working now in downtown Dallas, the majority of you cannot walk away from your job for a week.  However, if Lent has passed you by quickly and you look back with any guilt, I would say, "Get rid of it." 

The sensitivity begins now.

    Homily: 

    Here is a Greek definition for the word ‘tempter.’  In Greek, it is dee-ah-bah-lahs. The tempter is diabolic, wicked.   In today’s gospel reading it is the world that is arrogant and wicked.  It wants from Jesus Christ, the Son of God, a miracle or two, or three.  The world receives Jesus’ answer.  ‘I am not of the world. I bring to you the Father’s love; for he has sent me to redeem the world.’

    The Lord doesn’t have miracles on his agenda, for a faith based on miracles is no faith at all!  I propose to you that the Scribes and Pharisees are the devil in this reading. They are the ones who say to Jesus, ‘give us a miracle, so that we might believe in you.’

    Recall that it is the diabolic Pharisees and Scribes who want to trap Jesus by bringing to him, while he was teaching at the entrance of the temple, a woman caught in the act of adultery. ‘Moses said that we should stone her; what do you say.’

    The Team.

     

     The spirit that flows forth from the legalistic way the Pharisees and Scribes teach and live the Law ignore love. Their spirit is unclean.  They are the hypocrites that put fear in the minds of others, instead of love.   They can be likened to a circus hustler, ‘Come see Jesus feed, with a loaf of bread and a few fish, the overflowing crowd in the Big Tent.’

    Their ignorance misleads the crowd, for the bread and fish of the Gospel are the Liturgy of the Word and Liturgy of Eucharist.  There is no miracle here, only love.

    When Jesus spiritually heals the sick and unclean in the Gospel; these are not miracles. Those who come to him desire to be forgiven; they are seeking to change their lives by welcoming and living his life-giving words.

    God’s plan for us is not easy, therefore, ‘in everything we are to give thanks,’  Through the power of the Holy Spirit, Christ is alive to us, in good times and bad.  When we pray together each Sunday for our brothers and sisters who are physically sick or ill, we are praying for their care givers, their doctors, their nurses, their children, their parents, their friends.

    Author :  The author is Sirach or Joshua, a Jewish scribe.  The book of 51 chapters is one of the “in between books,”  more or less 12 of them.  In other words, their genuiness is questioned.  The Catholic Church accepts them; the Protestants don’t. 

    Date:  about 200 years before Christ.

    Hotter 8-30-13

     

    Anybody want to go for a nice 100 mile bike ride?

     

    Invite the poor, the crippled, and the lame.

    Rosemary asked me Friday afternoon how come I so look forward to riding 100 miles in the Hotter ‘N Hell Hundred.  At the time we were driving to Wichita Falls to grab a place on the floor on one of 5 racquet ball courts of the YMCA.  For $30 you can put your air mattress anywhere in the building and in the morning a simple breakfast is provided. 

    I thought about why I so look forward to this even and came up with 3  big reasons.  Here they are.

    Want a bike?  Over  500 to choose from.  These bike are being stored for the night on the 4th floor gym of the Wichita Falls YMCA.  The owners are skattered all around the building on the floor on their air mattresses.   A deal for $30.

     

    First, motivation to get into good shape.  I eat healthily, we ride around White Rock together, I do spin classes, and I get my weight where I would like it to stay all year.  Events like this energize me.

    In fact, now that the event has passed, I feel like a good friend has departed.  I wonder what next will energize me.  Actually, I do look forward to Thanksgiving and Christmas, but these events do not energize me to eat healthy and work out extra.

    Mile 30 rest stop.  My favorite.  The women volunteers bake dozens of about 5 varieties of cookies and hand them out.   Their hospitality is over the edge.

     

     

    Secondly, there is an esprit about the 100 miles.  I spent more time this year at the rest stops.  There are about 10 of them on the 100 miles.  Everything is free, water, gatoraide, varieties of cut up fruit, and cookies.  And over the top hospitality. 

    I was talking with one of the lady volunteers at mile 40.  She was walking around among a couple hundred riders holding a tray of cookies and handing them out.  She told me that all the workers are volunteers and that she, as one of the volunteer coordinators, has to turn volunteers away, so many want to help out.  These are people from Wichita Falls, older folks, middle agers, lots of high school kids, and even some small kids.  She said, too, that people look forward to the August event all year long.

     

    Mile 50

     

    Mile 40 rest stop.  Not to be outdone by their neighbor volunteers, these ladies for the first year also provided home made cookies.  It is really hard on us riders.  The women walk around with trays of cookies.  Also, at this rest stop volunteers stand on the edge of the road and offer to hold your bike while you visit the port-o-potty and eat cookies.  More over the edge hospitality.

     

     

     

    Finally, in line with the gospel about inviting everybody to your party, this party has them all.  Young and old.  I saw some very young kids riding.  And I may have been one of the oldest at 76.  There are men, there are women.  There are whites, blacks, and in betweens.  For me it is beautiful example of the American experience of unity among many.

    Mile 78 rest stop.  My second favorite, not because of a lack of hospitality, but because of the shade from a large grove of pecan trees.  You see a lot of gassed riders at this rest stop.  For them cots and cold, wet towels are provided, along with all the other fruits, Clif bars, shot blocks, and foods.  At mile 50 this year even hot dogs were provided with all the fixings.  You pay $35, and all this is for the rider.  Everybody is welcome to this party.

     At the end of Luke’s gospel, the apostles receive instructions from the Lord. First of all they were told that he fulfilled the expectation of the Law, Prophets and Psalms for the coming of the Messiah. 

    Then they were told that as the Father had sent him to bring forgiveness to humankind, he was sending them.

    Finally they were told to wait in Jerusalem for the Father’s gift of the Spirit.  In our reading from the Acts of the Apostles, the disciples receive this gift, that Christ is alive to them through the power of the Spirit.

     In the letter to the Corinthians we are reminded that God has no favorites.  The Spirit is alive within the hearts of all who welcome the good news and put it into practice by their words and actions.

    Pentecost Homily, Mike Carrell

     If you haven’t heard the story of the Master violin-maker, I share it with you now.  His violins when used by a skilled violinist produced tones so true that they resonated within the hearts of those who listened to them.  Violinists traveled from all over the country to his workshop in the mountains to seek the opportunity to purchase or play one of his violins. 

    This master violin-maker had been taught by this father that the most important step in making a great violin was the choice, curing and aging of the very best wood available. This meant that the wood used to construct a violin was in a preparation process for years before the violin’s construction could begin.

     This master violin-maker wanted the process begun by his father to be followed after he had died, so he wrote it down and began instructing one of his skilled wood crafters everything his father had taught him.   One day in the dead of winter, he asked the one he was grooming to follow him to enter the forest with him for it was time to choose another tree for his wood cutter so that its wood could be to put into the process of curing and aging.

    It was a cold day, with some snow swirling in from the north.  The master handed a compass to the younger man, and took a colored piece of rope from the wall of his office along with a ribbon to identify the tree.  The younger man walked with him until they reached a downward slope on the parcel of land that had been given to the master by his father.

    It felt much colder now, and after placing the rope, that required a certain diameter tree to be chosen, around several trees, he choose one.  Now the trees along this slope were bent and rugged looking, not like the ones where the workshop was located.

    ‘Why this tree,’ asked the younger man?  The master replied, ‘Look at the compass. You will see that these trees face due north. This tree has received for the last 100 years the brunt of the incoming north wind, snow and ice, and it has endured.  This wood is your friend: it is about to give its life to you. Its cross section will give witness to a life well lived for it has been pruned many times so the sound of your violins will be vibrant and true….  

    Now, what is the meaning of the story? The wood that was chosen to make great violins is another metaphor of God’s plan of salvation for us.  Each of us is the young apprentice to whom the metaphor was explained, and the music played by the violinists, that resonates within our hearts, is the Spirit.

     The teaching in which we find today’s gospel reading begins, ‘No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends,’ and that we are Christ’s friends because he has made known to us everything that he has heard from the Father.

    We have been empowered by the Spirit to live what Christ has taught us.  So, we are reminded at this feast of Pentecost and the 50th anniversary of Vatican II to be servants of the least among us who yearn to do God’s will. Continue to extend to them peace and justice, for we have all been made in the same image, to share the same bread, to have the same Father and to be bound together by the same Spirit.

    Remember, 3 primary authors are responsible for the 66 chapters.  Isaiah 1
    covers chapters 1-39.  This book is one of the Big 3 O.T. prophets, along
    with Jeremiah and Ezekiel.  This is because the works are the
    longest.  There are 12 minor prophets, authors who have small books.

    Time: around 555 before Christ, a
    compiling that is taking place with the end of the Babylonian Captivity in sight or
    already done.

    The Laborers
    are Few ?

    This morning I want to focus on the line that the laborers are few.  I disagree. 
    I see lots of laborers these days. 
    Let me give you 3 examples.

    Professor Jim Mahar.  You remember
    him.  He spoke to us a year or so ago, he
    and some students. 

    Jim is a finance professor at St. Bonaventure near Buffalo, NY, a
    Franciscan college.  A competitor with
    the Jesuit college in the same area, Canisius.

    You could imagine that Jim as a professor would be spending all his time
    with his students, teaching, testing, grading, and advising.  In summers he might do research and spend
    some time at his cottage in the Catskills or on the NJ shore. 

    Nope, not Jim.  He does all the
    professor with the kids, but his second passion is relief work.  I first met him when Bill Hammond & I
    drove down to Galveston to work with him and about 30 volunteer students a few
    years ago.   We spent a week cleaning, tearing
    down, building, and living side by side in dorms with the Baptist Men (another
    great group) and other volunteers.

    After Hurricane Sandy hit NYC, where was Jim and his bunch of student
    volunteers?   Right where it was the
    worst, like Breezy Point.   They even spent so much time there that they
    established a base house.

    Where again was Jim and his gang after the OK tornadoes in May?  I can tell you personally he and his gang
    worked hard, even working through lunch and up until sundown.  We ate finally at Central Market about 9:30,
    closing the place at 10:00.

    Jim is not just a laborer.  He
    invites and facilitates other laborers, like me.

    Then we have the lady I talked about last Sunday, the vivacious real
    estate agent who had a good month of June. 
    She out of nowhere gives us $1000 to be used in whatever way we see
    fit.

    I wanted to go personally with that check to work with Habitat Granbury
    this coming week, but they are not working over the July 4

    Mentioning our Habitat, I had a good friend ask about working.  I suggested he work yesterday at our
    house.  At about 8:15 he calls me and
    says, “Where is everybody.”  Apparently
    we also took the week off.

    That $1000 check so touched me that I decided I was going to give $20 to
    each of the guys who pick up our recycle every Monday morning.  I usually do this at Christmas.   I did
    so this time in connection with July 4
    th and was so touched.  The three guys could not tell me often
    enough about how grateful they were.

    One word about our community.  Can anyone imagine how we would make it without all the people who bring the sound, coffee, pastries, wine cups, take pictures, read, and sing, just to mention a few of the labors that take place?

    Finally, I know another person whose name will remain unmentioned.  I’ll whisper so she cannot hear.   This
    woman goes for an exploration meeting at Meals on Wheels.  There she runs into an old friend and
    neighbor who has moved out of the neighborhood and is likewise interested. 
    Now they are a team delivering Meals on Wheels every Thursday.  I think I sleep with this person.

    Isaiah 43, 1-5,  Do not be afraid, you are mine

    Psalm 32,    I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation.

    1 Corinthians 13, 1-3,   If I have no love, I am nothing.

     John 15, 10-11,   As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you.  Live in my love.  I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and you joy may be complete.

    Fred Macchio

    I would like to talk about our dear old friend, Fred.  I have two small vignettes and, then, I would like to tell my most favorite Fred story, the pickup story.

    First, we have a group of guys who meet every Friday at 1:00 at Jason’s Deli at Collin Creek.  The group was christened “Romeo’s” by Mike Moran, though I have gathered this is not an original.  Like, try T.I. and Poor Richard’s.  Nevertheless, Fred was always with us every week.

    When we got together there were two things.  First, every time I had to be absent, Fred would tell me that the numbers jumped to a dozen or more.

    Thanks to all from Maureen and the Macchios.

     

    Secondly, Fred would always find in the Thursday blog I sent out a mistake or two or more.  Like, “Hey, you forgot to change the date.”  Or “Hey, you misspelled this or that word.”  It really became a game for me and I enlisted Rosemary to get rid of mistakes.  However, even with her help Fred always caught something.  I got better, though, and was ready to wager him.   No mistakes, he buys my lunch.  A mistake, I buy his lunch.   So, you know how he handled that, he checked out on me.

    Second, a little fact you all may not know about Fred.  He donated his body to Southwestern Medical.  I was so impressed that I have started the screening process for myself.

    And now the pickup story.

     

     

    The Scene

    In 1990 I was driving an old Chevy pickup that was a castoff from Jesuit.  Trouble was, it was dying.  I needed a new ¾ ton to continue my tree planting hobby.  I was pulling an 800 gallon water tank to water all summer the new trees.

    So I approached my Jesuit community, the other priests, and asked for a new truck.   “Sure,” they said, but I had to find the money myself. 

    Like, where am I going to find some thousands of bucks to buy a new truck?  I was, at that time, celebrating a 9:00 and a 10:30 Sunday Mass every week at St. Marks.  I had a bunch of friends there.

    So, I called the pastor one day and asked if I may contact some of the parishioners who are my special friends.  “Yes,” he said somewhat reluctantly if I remember correctly.  “But, never, never, never mention this at the Mass or anywhere at any church function where I am the celebrant.”  Okay by me.  I felt grateful that I got what I got.

    So I contact some of these dear friends of mine.  And guess who one of these people was.  Yes, my buddy Fred. 

    A week passed.  Then another week.  On, perhaps the third Sunday after making my calls, I am walking from the main church to the cafetorium, where we had the 10:30 Mass.  Suddenly, a woman comes up and gives me a page.  I think it might have been Marcia Kolar.  I look at it and it says, “Help Stack get his pickup.”

    I go in the cafetorium and I find these empty gallon jars that had contained mustard or ketchup.  Pasted on the jars, “Help Stack get his pickup.”  Jim Herman, who died a few years ago, was the reader that Sunday and he is up at the podium saying the same thing.  Wow, I was really getting nervous.  We could be in deep doo doo.

    I see Fred and ask what does he know about all this.  He says cryptically, I will always remember, “It is easier sometimes to apologize after it is done, than to request permission ahead of time.”

    Suddenly at that moment, like a clap of thunder in comes the pastor, yelling, “Who did this?”  He goes for me and yells that he had told me never.  He is yelling and running around trying to take back from people those little pages with “Help Stack get his truck.”  It was quite a scene.

    He kept yelling and finally I gave a nod to Teresa, she started the music, and I just simply walked away and up the aisle.

    After the Mass he was back, saying, “I know who did this,” and yelling at Fred and even Maureen, saying that Fred was going to pay for this. 

    Sometime later, Fred says to me, “In all my years here, I’ve never seen him go nuclear like that.”  Before Christmas that year I was handed enough to pay $15,000 in cash for that truck.

    Well, I just finished reading Bishop John Shelby Spong’s new book titled Biblical Literalism: A Gentile Heresy, which is a study of the Gospel of Matthew.  Bishop Spong is one of my prime mentors in understanding the Christian faith and the Christian Scriptures.  My main reason I picked a chapter of his book for us today is that it is on understanding the Sermon on the Mount in relation to Pentecost, which we are preparing to celebrate next Sunday.  Also, Bishop Spong’s book is on the Gospel of Matthew, and Matthew is our default reading source whom we read from most of this year (of Cycle C readings).  In his new book Bishop Spong teaches how Matthew composed his Gospel to match up with the festivals of the Jewish year, all celebrated in the synagogue.  In this chapter he shows us how Matthew matches the Jewish celebration of Pentecost or Shavuot with Jesus as the New Moses.  Moses was the most significant person in Jewish history.  The second major celebration of the Jewish liturgical year, after Passover, is Pentecost or Shavuot.

    At Pentecost, or Shavuot, Matthew provides the liturgy readings that make it clear to the Jewish followers of Jesus that Jesus is the new Moses.  The Book of Exodus tells the story of how Moses went up Mount Sinai, received the law directly from God and announced it to the people.  In their acceptance of God’s law from Moses (The 10 Commandments) the Jewish people entered into a covenant with God.  Matthew, in his Gospel, has Jesus go up a mountain and then deliver to the people God’s new law—the Beatitudes.  In accepting this new law from Jesus, his followers enter into a new covenant with God.     

    Remember, at that time most people were illiterate.  The Torah, the Books of Moses, were read at every Sabbath liturgy.  They read the entire 5 books of the Torah every year—compare that with our reading a mere fraction of the Bible once every 3 years. Shavuot or Pentecost was celebrated in a big way (it was huge!), with a 24-hour vigil, so they needed a lot of readings and songs to fill the vigil.  That’s where Psalm 119 came into play—the longest psalm of all with 176 verses (psalms were the synagogue’s hymnal).  This was the psalm sung at the celebration of Shavuot.  Psalm 119 is relentless in its praise of the beauty and wonder of God’s law and the covenant that sprang from accepting and keeping God’s law. The meaning of this covenant is what was renewed liturgically each year, and was what the 24-hour vigil was all about.   

    Matthew combined Psalm 119 with the Sermon on the Mount to present Jesus as the new Moses.  Psalm 119 fits the Shavuot liturgy with stanzas for each of the 8 3-hour portions of the vigil.  Psalm 119’s first stanza has 8 verses and the first 2 begin with the word “blessed”.  The Sermon on the Mount also begins with 8 verses, each starting with the word “blessed”.  We call these the Beatitudes.  So Matthew used Psalm 119 as the basis on which to build the Sermon on the Mount. Next Matthew has Jesus give commentaries on each of the 8 beatitudes, 1 for each of the 8 3-hour portions of the vigil.  Matthew then has Jesus do a commentary on the 10 Commandments, going deeper into the heart of these original laws of God.

    This whole Sermon on the Mount is a beautifully crafted interpretation of Jesus as the new Moses.  And it’s all organized around the psalm used at Shavuot, Pentecost.  This amazing take and understanding of Matthew’s writing of his Gospel knocks my socks off and I love it.
