Sundqay Homily 8-21-11, 21st Ordinary Time

Readings: Isaiah 22, 19-23; Psalm 138, Lord, Your Love is eternal; do not forsake the Work of Your Hands; Romans 11, 33-36; Matthew 16, 13-20 

Intro to Readings 

 Our sources for our three readings again this week are Isaiah, Paul to the Romans and Matthew’s Gospel.  John last week talked a little about the Letter to the Romans and I would like to continue with that topic a little further.  This letter to the Romans is different than all of his other letters for several reasons.

 This is Paul’s attempt to tell the folks in Rome, who do not know him, who he is and what he has been preaching!  All of Paul’s other letters were written to communities he had started himself.  He has not yet been to Rome, but there are Christians there.  Paul has enemies who are preaching that he is corrupting the Good News, and so he needs to address that very clearly.  This he does by explaining his own understanding of Jesus.

 Paul is also at a cross-roads in his own life.  He is just completing his missionary work in Asia Minor and Greece.  He is about to head back to Jerusalem with “The Collection”, money he has raised from these communities to support the Jerusalem Church – an early Peters Pence collection!  He then plans to head west to Spain and start his mission word there.  He will need a base in Rome to support that work, and so he also wants to make a good impression there.

 Of course, Paul never does get to Spain!  He is arrested after his visit to Jerusalem and does end up in Rome, but in jail, where he is eventually killed by Nero.

 Homily

 “Who do men say I am?”  This question is one that all three of the Synoptic Gospel writers have.  It is an interesting question, but one which we can all too easily glide over and see it as only directed at Peter.  I would like to propose that it is a very important question and one that each one of us needs to answer today!  Who is Jesus for me, for you?

 In trying to understand and answer the question it is worth stepping back and approaching it in the following way.  Today, when we are introduced to someone, it is fairly common in the conversation to ask “ and what do you do?”  We tend to try to understand who someone is by what they do.  Their activity or job, helps us get a bit of a handle on who they are.  In the same way when Jesus asks the disciples the question, they tend to fall back on describing who he is by naming people who have done similar things in the past!  We know that the answer “what I do” is not a satisfactory answer, but it seems to be a fairly common approach.  When someone says “oh so you are a salesman” my instinctive reaction is to say yes but I am more than that.  Stick around and get to know me.  Determining who I am by just what I do is very superficial.  So too when it comes to Jesus, what he did is only part of the answer. 

 It seems to me that in order to fully answer the question about Jesus we need to do more than just know what he did.  Yes that will help, but I believe that this getting to know business is a lifetime work.  And reflection is very much a part of that activity.

 I think that once we get to know someone really well, we change!  Our knowledge of them changes us as a person.  Think about this.  Reflect on the people who are in your life who really mean something to you.  Are you a different person because of that relationship?  I would have to answer “yes” in my case. My life is different, my attitude is different.  Now to bring it back to Jesus, we can certainly say that Peter’s life was very different after Jesus said, “come follow me”.  We know that Paul’s life was totally different after meeting Jesus on the road to Damascus.

 How do we develop and deepen our relationship with Jesus.  It really isn’t enough to just read the New Testament, and read about Jesus, that will just give us information!  We need to do that but then we need to start a dialog with Jesus, and we need to spend time listening to Him.  Not easy, but otherwise we will have a tough time answering the question.  Jesus will be merely an interesting person from long ago, and not someone who has a major say in our daily lives.

    Readings:  Exodus 32, 7-14; Psalm 51, I will rise and go to My Father; 1 Timothy 1, 12-17; Luke 15, 1-32

     

    Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time – Intro to Readings

    Our first reading from the Book ofExodus is a wonderful piece of writing!  There are two sections to the reading; the first is God expressing his anger to Moses because the people have made an idol. 

    Mass Begins 9-12-10

     

    One very interesting human touch in the reading should be familiar to anyone who has had kids, when the kids have not been at their best.  The kids suddenly do not belong to one of the parents!  In our reading, the people are no longer “God’s people” but suddenly are Moses’ people!  The second section of the reading Moses turns the situation around convincing God not to destroy the people.

    The second reading comes from Paul’s First Letter to Timothy. 

    I suppose the first question that comes to mind is “who is Timothy”?  He has two letters from Paul!  Acts of the Apostles Chapter 16 tells us that Paul was in Lystra when he met with Timothy.  We are told who Timothy’s parents are and Paul took him with him on his missionary work, finally sending him to the community in Ephesus, and that is where Timothy was when our letter today was written to him, probably around the year 65 CE.  By this time Paul is in prison in Rome.  The reading ends with what we call a doxology, which is a short type of hymn, we have one when we pray the Eucharistic Prayer and the ending “Through him, with him etc.”  That is a doxology.  Paul simply tried to get the message that if he could be forgiven his sins, then anyone could!

    Homily

    The theme in each one of our readings today is the same “being lost and in need of God’s forgiveness, or being found”.  In our first reading from the Book of Exodus, recall that the people have been lead by Moses from slavery in Egypt and have wandered through the desert for many years.  Moses has gone up the mountain, Mount Sinai, to receive the 10 Commandments from God.  Meanwhile the people are tired of God and have built a golden calf to worship.  Needless to say, God is pretty upset.  They are about to get really lost, but Moses manages to talk God out of it!

    Psalm 51 is our responsorial psalm and is a great favorite of mine.  Like St Paul, you have to be a great sinner to really appreciate this psalm.  There is a great awareness on the part of the writer, sometimes ascribed to King David, of how sinful he is.  “Against you only have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight”

    In Paul’s letter to Timothy, Paul is telling him his own story as a way of encouraging Timothy and to all who feel lost.

    Our gospel reading from Luke gives us three stories about losses.  If you look closely at all three stories, there is another theme running through them, that of “rejoicing”  When a sheep gets lost, he simply lies down and will not get up even when the shepherd finds him, which is why the shepherd picks him up and carries him. 

    I think at times we too can fall into a similar pattern.  When we get lost we have a tendency to lie down and do nothing.  The readings today are a very loud reminder to us of God’s forgiveness.  Two thoughts to take away.  First, are we willing to accept God’s forgiveness and secondly are we able to bring that forgiveness to those around us who need to be picked up?

  • Sunday Homily 9-20-09, 26th Ordinary Time

    Readings: Wisdom 2, 12-20; Psalm 54, The Lord upholds My Life; James 5, 1-6; Mark 9, 38-48.

    Wisdom:   One of the 14-15 books of the deutero-canonical books of the bible.  Not OT nor NT, but in between and the subject of controversy over the centuries.  Were they really part of the bible or not?  How do you know?  Catholic church accepts the books.

    Mass 9-20-09

    Subject matter: the book collects traditional Jewish material, as well as ideas borrowed from Greek philosophy, in order to teach that God rewards those who are faithful to him.

    Author: not Solomon, but a Jew living in Alexandria, Egypt who spoke and wrote excellent Greek.

    Date: ca. 100-200 BCE.  How do we know these facts?  Because of text analysis.  For example, while the author wrote in Greek, he uses phrases and expressions that have a Hebrew flavor.  Also, he mentions rulers and places that reveal date and locale. 

    Our Selection: what a wicked person thinks should be done with a good person–beat & kill.  This links up with the suffering servant poem from 2 Isaiah last week.  Jews think the good person getting beaten is the Jewish race/nation.  Christians think the person is Christ.

    James:  presents a pretty negative image of people.  What would be a compassionate image?

    Every Person is a Child

     

    Ever hear of a guy named Bear Bryant?  Like in Coach Bear Bryant?  Bear Bryant was football coach of the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa for 25 years, up to 1982, when he retired.  He won 6 national championships and I was living in Mobile when he won his second in ’64.  At his retirement he was asked by a reporter what he was going to do next.  He quipped, “I’ll probably croak in a week.”  8 days later he died of a heart attack.  After having just received a positive report on a physical check up.  

    The story goes that in his first year as coach at Alabama he was driving around the rural south of the state looking for a player he had heard about and whom he wanted to invite to the university.  He could not find the kid’s house and he was getting hungry because it was after his lunch hour.  He sees a little ramshackle joint with a tattered sign, ‘restaurant,’ and decides to give it a try.  He walks in, the place goes dead silent, and the head of every person turns to look at this white guy.  A big black guy behind a home made bar asks, “What can I do for you, sir?”  

    Bryant says he is the new coach at Tuscaloosa, can’t find a boy he is looking for, and has an appetite.  The black guy says he is welcome to eat what they got, but he may not like it because they are serving that day corn bread, beans, and chitlin.

    Bryant says, “I’m from Moro Bottom, AK, I’ve eaten probably a mile of chitlin (pig intestines), and the menu sounds great.”  Everybody smiles and he eats his lunch at the bar.  A while later, leaving the restaurant with the information he wanted on the boy’s house, he pays and gives the man a tip, not flashy, but generous.  The black man asks him if he has a photo of himself.  Bryant says he has not been coach long enough to have a photo, but he writes down the guy’s name & address, and promises to send him one.  Back at Tuscaloosa, although disappointed in the recruit he went to find, he remembers to send the picture, signed with, “Thanks for one of the best lunches ever.”

     

    The Girls 9-20-09

    Time passes.  Years later another boy has developed a reputation in that region and Bryant wants him for Tuscaloosa.  A black athlete.  The university has integrated.  He calls the boy and invites him to the university.  The boy is polite but says his two best friends are going to Auburn and he hopes to team with them.  Auburn is to Alabama as the Giants are to the Cowboys.  So Bryant figures he has lost the kid. Not so.  About a week later the kid calls the coach and asks if he still would like him at Alabama.  Bryant says sure and asks him what made him change his mind.  The kid says his grandfather knew him and has great respect for him.  Not that he would remember his grandfather.  Bryant had once eaten in his little restaurant and promised him a picture.  

     

    His grandfather respected him because he not only ate chitlins at the restaurant, but he honored his promise and sent him a picture, which has place of honor to that day in the restaurant.

     

    Moral of the story?

    Welcome to the beautiful colors of Advent & Fall in Dallas.

     

    Readings:

    Isaiah, 11, 1-10,  On that day the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb. (a beautiful reading)

     Psalm 72,  Justice shall flourish in his time, and fullness of peace forever.

     Romans 15, 4-9,  Welcome one another as Christ welcomed you.

     Matthew, 3, 1-12,   John the Baptist appeared preaching in the desert.

    Welcome, Everybody.

     

    Observations on the Isaiah and the Matthew selections.

    These two reading today have a sort of ying & yang quality to them.  Isaiah is looking for peace while Matthew talks about John the Baptist, who does not specialize in peace.  

    You will find the selection from Isaiah (this is Isaiah 1) to be a beautiful dream about peace.  He even looks at the animal kingdom for peace.  Watch how Isaiah enters into this theme when he talks about the wolf.

    And what was John's message?  You better behave and repent or you are going to get it.

    So how do you you reconcile the reading from Matthew with a
    God who loves unconditionally?

    Acts of the Apostles observations:

     

    Again like was explained last week, this work is basically the story of the development & growth of the Christian community after the death of Jesus up to Paul's arrival in Rome.

     

    It is considered more idealistic than factual.  This passage is a good example of this  idealism.  The socialistic life style presented is what we lived as Jesuits.  Any money we earned went into the community.  Any needs we had for money came from the community.    Some communities I lived in had a cash drawer.  You took what you needed.  Other communities I went to the brother.   He may be on a tractor pulling a gang mower on the football field.   I would wave to him & he would pull a wad of cash out of his pocked and give me whatever I needed.    There was a mutual trust.

    Proverbs:

    What are they: a collection of moral & religious teachings in the form of pithy sayings.  For example: "Better to eat a dry crust of bread with peace of mind than to have a banquet in a house full of trouble" (17, 1); "Being cheerful always keeps you healthy" (17, 22).

    Some a bit tough: "Don't hesitate to discipline a child.  A good beating won't kill him" (23, 12).

    Some amusing: "A nagging wife is like water going drip-drip-drip" (27, 15); "Better to live on the roof than to share the house with a nagging wife" (25, 24). 

    Author: Maybe Solomon is behind chapters 1-29.  Most likely a compilation.

    Date: Ca. 300 BCE is considered a possibility with material coming from as far back as 900, during the time of Solomon.

    Taking Care of the House Wisdom Built

    In honor of it being mid-August and summer vacation time, even though it is rapidly coming to an end, I have homily light this morning.  Just a simple lesson I learned, again, this week.

    When was the last time you had no running water in your house?  Or even no a/c?

    This past week Rosemary & I had no running water in our house for one day and two nights, which seemed like an eternity.

    And, of course, Genevieve says,  "Hi Everybody, thanks for coming to see me.  Nice to be here."  

     

    A month ago or, even, maybe 6 weeks ago, I thought I was hearing water running in our house.  I could only hear it in the bathroom I use when I get up, like 4:00 in the morning.  It is so quiet at that hour that I can easily hear unusual sounds.  I checked the toilet stoppers in the other two bathrooms.  No noise.   During the day I could not hear the noise because of other noises.  With the a/c blower running, I could not hear the noise except maybe just a tiny bit.

    I told Rosemary I wanted to check the water meter at the street one time when we both were riding around White Rock Lake.  I would see if the meter moved.  I set up the read, then forgot when we came home and we used the sinks.

    Can't drink wine?  No problem.  Jan has you covered, grape juice.  

     

    Then, I sort of forgot the noise.  But I continued to hear it. 

    Then one morning, I went to the water heater closet.  The noise was much stronger.   So I finally did the water meter check and the dial had moved in a two hour period when we were away.  So I told Rosemary that we have a water leak and it may be the water heater.

    We call Levy, the company we have used for year.  A guy comes the next day, turns off the water heater, and tells me it is not the water heater.  Which means it is under the floor.  “Are you on pier & beam or slab,” he asks me.  Pier & beam, thanks. 

    So he has to call for another guy to go through the small door in the floor.  The guy does, says there is a lake down there, and he cannot get to the leak which is right under the water heater, but in a place too small for him to get to.  “We’ll send Junior tomorrow, because he can get in these narrow places.  Meanwhile, turn off the water at the street.”

    Unfortunately, Junior cannot come the next day, Tuesday.  He is booked.  We have to wait until Wednesday morning, 8:00 A.M.

    So, yes, we have no running water from Monday afternoon, through Tuesday night, and into Wednesday.  I filled some buckets before I turned the water off.  But, How did our ancestors live without running water.  Sinks, showers, and toilets.

    From Chris, the anything at all to get out of going to Yosemite, a torn tendon in his foot.  6-9 months recovery. 

     

    We finally got water, but not until Wednesday afternoon.  I was ready to hug Junior, who was not so small, but agile.  I wanted to thank the running water gods on my knees.

    I really learned a lesson.  Gratitude for the conveniences I take for granted every day.  Water, a/c, electricity, to name just three.

  • Sunday Homily 12-13-09, 3rd Advent

    Readings: Zephaniah 3, 14-18; Psalm, Isaiah 12, Cry out with Joy and Gladness for among You is the Great and Holy One of Israel; Philippians 4, 4-7; Luke 3, 10-18

     

    Zephaniah: date, author, subject, & our selection

     

        Date: two possibilities–ca. 650 BCE, before Babylon & contemporary with Jeremiah.  Or ca. 200 BCE.

     

    Mass 12-13-09

      

    Author: probably not Zephaniah himself, but someone recording what he said.  He is one of the 12 minor prophets, simply because his work is small, only 3 chapters.

     

       Subject: like all prophets, Zephaniah predicts doom and destruction to Jerusalem because the people are not good.  His purpose: alter behavior, especially the religious behavior, of his fellow citizens of Jerusalem.  A rather jealous and punishing god is presented.

     

       Our selection: last lines of the last chapter, a song of joy and rejoicing.  This is the only positive note in the 3 chapters.  Consequently, scholars think it may have been added to the original work.  This is the only time in the 3 year cycle that we have a reading from Zephaniah.  Take a good look.

    Candle liturgy

    Tony: We have lit the first two candles, one for hope and one for peace. Today we light the third candle, the candle of joy. This should be the easy one, because joy is all around us—in the children, the lights, the music, the gathering together. But how often do we let our preparations—or our memories—push joy to the side? Joy is like an underground spring that wells up within us, but joy is also a choice, an attitude. Like a muscle, it needs to be exercised. So today we open ourselves to joy, trusting that God has already planted it in us. All we need to do is give it care and offer it to share.

    O come, O come, Emmanuel,
    and ransom captive Israel,
    that mourns in lonely exile here
    until the Son of God appear.

    A Christmas Story 

     

    I have a Christmas story for you this morning.  It took place the first Christmas I was in Africa, 1977. 

     

    The African continent is shaped vaguely like a heart.  I spent most of my time on the east side, Tanzania, Kenya, & Uganda.  But my first Christmas I spent on the left side of the continent, the west.  The country I spent Christmas in was called Zaire in those days for ca. 30 years, now called the Republic of Congo, since ca. 2000.

     

    The ruler at the time was a guy named Mobuto Seseseko and he was corrupt.  He took for himself all the money gained by selling off the country's considerable natural wealth. 

     

    The capitol of the country is called Kinshasa and I was in a town near there called Kimwenza.  I had been giving seminars & retreats in Nigeria and ended up in Zaire at Christmas, how, I do not remember.

     

    Three special memories remain with me from that Christmas.

     

    First, I remember a midnight Mass.  It took place in a big but simple church on the edge of town.  There was probably a thousand black Zaire folks there and one white guy sitting up front on the left side with his eyes bugging out.

     

    My eyes were bugging out because of at least two things.  First, the priest, a local young black Zaire man, he spent a lot of time dancing with a tall, cone shaped hat.  He danced marching in with the drums and the shakers going at it, he danced during the ceremony, and he danced on the way out.  In fact, he did not walk during the ceremony, he danced. 

     

    The other thing memorable was when he finally danced out.  It was probably more than 3 hours since he had danced in.  And nobody was leaving early.  In fact, I discovered that Africans want to celebrate for at least a couple of hours when they come to Mass.  Consequently, a lot of music. 

     

    The second memory I have is the incongruity I felt celebrating Christmas in a tropical environment, like celebrating Christmas in the summer.  Kinshasa has tons of flowers and they bloom all year because it is summer all year.  The bougainvillea, the frangipanni, and the jacaranda with their purple flowers making like snow on the ground, all were flowering along with their cousins.

    Thirdly, I remember that Mobutu was mad at the Catholic church for some reason and he decreed that Christmas could not be celebrated on Christmas day.  It was a week day and businesses and schools were all open.  He did not ban the Masses, but people had to pretend to be working and going to school.  I remember walking around the town Christmas day thinking how odd the whole experience was, summer time and the government banning the celebration of Christmas day. 

     

    Fortunately, the government did not get nasty about the celebrating that took place, many of the city folks were Catholic.  In a goofy twist, Seseseko's own sons even went to the Jesuit college in Kimwenza.   Oddly I appreciated more the freedom I had to celebrate that Christmas Mass, and the people seemed to celebrate with even more zest. 

     

    This year here in Dallas we have the freedom to make Christmas a spiritual festival.
