Isaiah observations:

What:   Remember last week we had Ezekiel, one of the Big 3 Prophets.  This week we have The Big Prophet, Isaiah.   Because of its 66 chapters this work is a long one.  And a rich one.  Remember, also, that at least 3 writers contributed to the book. 

The first 39 chapters, Isaiah 1, present a strong criticism of the rampant corruption of the ruling class with their oppression of the ordinary people.  This Isaiah lives around 750 years before Christ.  He knows how the Assyrians destroyed the northern kingdom of Israel.  He predicts the same for the southern kingdom, Judah. 

Our selection: Isaiah 2 begins at chapter 40 and is called The Book of Comfort.  You will see why.  Picture the people now enslaved by the Babylonians.  Isaiah 2 consoles the people with visions of a second Exodus & a return to Jerusalem 

Isaiah 3 speaks to the people now resettled in Jerusalem in chapters 55-66.  Emphasis is on justice, Sabbath observance, sacrifice, and prayer.  In other words, behave now that God has resettled you.

John the Baptist Figures

After five weeks, folks, of extraordinary events, I expected that for a while Rosemary & I would have a period of relative quiet, less emotional activity.  Not so. 

Yesterday she, John Cade, and myself, we went to the Corpus annual meeting.  Corpus is the national organization of married priests.  Corpus in this context means body and, in particular, we are the body.   We married priests are still the body of Christ.  The conference took place at the American Airlines Training Center, an excellent venue.

Three observations.

First, these married priests and their wives are John the Baptist figures.  That is, like, John, they are pointing the way to the Lord.  They are pointing to a better way.  If Jesus was living today, I could easily see him being a member of Corpus.

Secondly, these men and the wives have spent time in the desert.  This is at least because they have been rejected and not allowed to share their charism as priests.  Folks, these are beautiful people.  They make marvelous priests, but they cannot officially share their gifts.

These men & their wives are also walking in the desert today.  The last time I met with these people was two years ago and there was optimism and hope everywhere in the people.  Both John & I sensed less optimism about the Catholic Church this year.  It was brought up now & then.

One of the great men of this group is Anthony Padovano and he, an eternal optimist, constantly affirms that in the reform of Catholicism history is on our side.  Many of us who were at the conference see the reform and the principles of Vatican II going nowhere if not backwards. 

Thirdly, want to know where these people tell me they find hope and optimism?  You will never guess.  In You!  You who make up this community.  You who come every Sunday to a cafetorium instead of a pretty church, you who are so generous, you who support so many outreach projects.  Look at your Habitat involvement these weeks.  You are a John the Baptist symbol for these priests and their wives. 

I even had a married priest from Ontario, Canada come across the room to me and say what inspiration he takes from you. 

How does it feel to be considered an inspiration and a John the Baptist symbol?

Today:  Nice reading, especially for All Saints.  Note the beautiful line, “You love all things

Saints?  Ever met One? 
Never met One?

I would like to talk today about saints. 
Ever met one?  Never, you
say.  I would say, on the contrary, I
have known many, and I know many.  Let me
spell out a bit what this saint person is or does from my perspective.

First I would suggest the saint is fully alive or trying to be fully
alive.

Secondly, I think this person shows me that Our God is what the Psalm writer
says.  Namely, using my translation, Our
God is gracious and merciful, never gets angry and is abounding in love.

Zacchaeus exemplifies these two qualities.  He shows me this portrait of God and he is so
alive that he climbs a tree to compensate for his shortness.  A terrific model.

 

I have another.  This person came
into my life around fifth grade at Christ the King.  He was a young guy in his twenties, out of
the navy where he had been wounded. 
He was our all sports coach, scout master, teacher, and mentor.  

His name was Frank and at least twice in his life he showed me God. 

 

The first time it happened started after I had entered the Boy Scouts
and we went off to camp Texoma. I don’t think Frank was there this year.  I immediately did not like this, was homesick,
and scared that some of the big guys, the eighth grade boys, who were going to
initiate me, it being my first time out.

So I pretended to be sick, cried a bit, and eventually got taken
home.  I remember coming home.  It was mid-summer and hot.  We had no a/c, of course.  I think my parents were embarrassed.  That event was one of the most humiliating
times in my life.

My dad & some of the other dads had gotten involved with the Scouts
at this time and, therefore, I stuck around. 
Summer came again, camp came, and I did not want to go.  But my dad had volunteered to do an
overnight.  Each night a dad stayed with
the troop. 

 

I did not want to go, but figured I had better go along with my
dad. 

I’ll never forget arriving in that campsite at twilight.  They used the old canvas, walled tents on
platforms.  Each tent had 4 cots.  When we arrived, we went straight to Frank’s
tent and he was seated on his cot.

When I  entered the tent rather queasy, Frank was so warm in his
greeting and so accepting that I immediately felt at ease and at home.  I think Frank’s support of me that night
helped me turn a big corner in my life.

 

Could this have significantly helped me to enter the Jesuits in ’58?  Despite the fact that I knew I would be
coming home for nothing, and despite the times I felt homesick, like especially
around Thanksgiving and Christmas, I never returned home.

The second time Frank showed me Our God was when we planted trees on Marsh
Lane from LBJ to Love Field, probably around 1993-4.  We had so many trees that we used two Sundays
in October-November. 

Frank owned a restaurant just north of LBJ west off of Marsh.  When he heard about what we had done the
first Sunday, he invited all the planters to eat dinner at his restaurant after
the second planting. 

We did and those trees are still there. 
Moreover, for some years Frank’s oldest son, likewise, Frank, whom I
taught at Jesuit in the 60’s, and who owns Back Country Bar-b-que on Greenville
Ave., Frank Jr. catered a lunch for all the tree planters.

Frank Sr. is retired and living at Tremont, and he is one of my saints.  He is fully alive and he has shown me that Our
God is merciful and gracious, never gets angry, and is abounding in love.

Who are your saints?   For whom
are you a saint?  

 

 

 

Readings: Isaiah 11, 1-10 (a beauty); Psalm 72, Justice shall Flourish in His Time, and Fulness of Peace Forever; Romans 15, 4-9; Matthew 3, 1-12. 

Isaiah 11 observations:

Author: Isaiah 1.  Remember, 3 primary authors are responsible for the 66 chapters.  Isaiah 1 covers chapters 1-39.  This book is one of the Big 3 O.T. prophets, along with Jeremiah and Ezekiel.  This is because the works are the longest.  There are 12 minor prophets.

Time: ca. 700, before the Assyrians annihilate the northern Jewish kingdom, called Israel, vs the southern kingdom called Judah, where Jerusalem is.  10 tribes were lost in this destruction, the 10 Lost Tribes of Israel. 

Remember there were 12 tribes.  Why?  Because of the 12 sons of Jacob, who was one of the 3 great patriarchs or founders of the tribe, Abraham, Isaac, & Jacob, who was also called Israel. 

 

Message of Isaiah 1: condemnation of the corruption of the ruling class & oppression of the poor.  Because of this, destruction is coming.  He foresaw the coming of the Assyrians, not a difficult thing to do.  The profile of the prophet was usually 1. criticism, 2. prediction of dire payment, 3. consolation.

Today’s message: consolation.  Two parts.  In part one, a special person will come. And because of him, part two, watch what will happen.  A dream most touching.

 
 

Advent Wreaths: This little liturgical practice came to the Catholic liturgy, believe it or not, from the German Lutherans in the 1500's, the time of Martin Luther.  It was more than just decoration.  The circle symbolized eternity.  The greens Christian life in a dead time of the year.  The candles represent each of the 4 weeks of Advent, each candle symbolizing the greater light brought by Christ.  Their color purple symbolized penance and purification for the Coming.  The Rose candle says, 'We are almost there!'

 

Beautiful Dreams Can Happen

 The Isaiah reading this morning has special meaning for me in two ways. 

 First of all, the beauty of the writer’s dream touches me.  He dreams that the world will have such peace and harmony that even the animals will live without fear of each other.  Wow. 

 
 

Secondly, I have a story connected with the dream.  It happened in Toronto the Advent at the end of the year I was ordained, 1971.

 The Jesuits have a theology college in Toronto and I spent four years there, ’68-’72.  The fall of my second year a class of about 35 guys entered from all over.  Among them was a Jesuit brother. 

 Brothers were Jesuits, members of the fraternity, but they focused on living religious life in a community with its 3 vows of poverty, chastity, & obedience.  They did not feel a call to be priests.  They worked in all sorts of occupations, treasurer, house administrator, grounds keepers, you name it.

 The Jesuit brother who entered that fall had been a brother for a half a dozen years & now wanted to become a priest.  Trouble was he was blind.  His name was Larry. 

 Larry had not come to this idea solely on his own.  Many people had encouraged him.  For some years he had worked & taught at a Wisconsin Jesuit boarding high school called Prairie du Chien, now closed unfortunately. Here the idea really grew.

 He went to the Wisconsin Jesuit provincial and he agreed to see what could be done.  The provincial went to Rome to get permission for a blind person to be ordained.  Rome said, “No, and don’t bother to ask again.” 

 So the provincial sent Larry to Toronto to do the normal theology studies leading up to priesthood.  Just to see how he would make out. 

 He made out splendidly.  In fact, we all pitched in to help him.  We recorded classes, we read to him, we recorded assigned readings, and we studied with him.  I, in fact, lived next door to him on the third floor. 

 The end of the first year came and the provincial returned to Rome to ask again.  Rome said, “No, and don’t ask again.”

 The end of Larry’s third year the provincial asked again.  This time Rome said, “He may be ordained a deacon.”  Folks, the excitement and gratitude in our house was tactile.  You could feel it, touch it.  We knew that once a deacon, he could easily move to priesthood.

 
 

Larry was now in his 3^rd year and it was in Advent of the 3^rd year when the men were ordained deacons, the priesthood coming in the following spring. 

 It was the second Sunday of Advent, cycle A like this year, in the college chapel full, about 35 guys getting ordained deacons preliminary to being ordained priests 6 month later.  The reading was Isaiah 11.  In Braille Larry read Isaiah’s dream.  There was not a dry eye, not a sound but Larry’s voice. 

 Today Larry Gillick is ordained and works as part of a team working out of St. Louis U. 

 Beautiful dreams can happen.  We can influence their happening.  How?

Exodus observations :

What: After two weeks in the first book of the Bible, today we move to the second. The book basically tells the heroic struggle of Moses to get the Hebrew people out of Egypt, where they had gone because of the drought in their land some decades or centuries before. 

Author: The book is about Moses, but he is not the author, as was thought for centuries. Instead, it is a compilation. 

 

 

 

My Dearest Genevieve, are you playing for us this morning?

 

When:  Take a guess.  Yes, during and after the Babylonian Captivity, 555 before Christ.  Why now?  To help the Jewish tribe stay together.  Biblical commentators will say this is the most important book in the Bible.  Why?  Cultural history gives identity, especially one that goes from tragedy to triumph.  Plus, the writers, the priests-Levites, emphasized that God considered this tribe to be The Tribe.

Today’ selection: an amusing story about how the Jewish people are bummed out with Moses for taking them out of the so called cushy slave life of Egypt into a desert with no water and no food.  

Recommendation for Lent: Read Genesis and Exodus.  Interesting stories.

Life Giving Water

This morning I would like to mention 3 comments about John’s gospel that contemporary Bible scholars make.  Then, proceeding from the general observations, I would like to look at today’s gospel and especially the play on water.  Is it symbolic maybe?  Of what?

 

 

Hi, Kevin, thanks for all your help.

 

Observation 1: 3 writers can be identified as contributing to the gospel of John.  The 3 authors worked over a period of 25 to 30 years, up to around 90.

 Secondly, the figures in the stories are literary creations, perhaps built around certain people.                                                                                                         

Thirdly, the words that Jesus uses are not just recordings, but words composed by the writers to convey a message or a symbol, like water.

Which leads to our selection from John this morning, the Samaritan woman at the well. 

She is talking about ordinary well water.  Jesus is talking about symbolic water, living water that gives life to the spirit.  

I would propose this life giving water takes all sorts of forms.  For example.

Remember the first time we had our penitential rite?  When Mike proposed the idea at a team luncheon I confess I was a bit skeptical.  I was thinking, ‘Nobody is going to want to do this.  More focus on sin.’  This is why I don’t like Lent, the endless focus on sin.  What does the ordinary Mass always begin with?  Focus on me a sinner. 

 Was I pleasantly surprised!  In fact, that penitential rite was pure water to my spirit.  I was humbled and touched. 

 

 

Let us begin.

 

So, events can be life giving water, people can be life giving water.  Put them together and my spirit is moved. 

Last week in Hilton Head we had Rosemary’s two sisters and husbands.  We celebrated a little Sunday Mass in the living room.  I was moved to tears.  I could hardly talk.

Matthew  15, 21-28,  It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.

 

Isaiah 56 observations:

As soon as you see Isaiah, chapter 56, you know some things, if you are into the study of the Bible and especially  of Isaiah, my favorite.

1.  Isaiah 56 is Isaiah 3, chapter 56-66, the end of the book of Isaiah.
2.  Isaiah 3 is put together after the Babylonian Captivity, that is, around 555 before Christ.
3.  The Israelites have returned to Jerusalem, a totally destroyed, depressed city.
4. Therefore, it is plausible to expect Isaiah 3 to be trying to lift up the spirits of the people.  This he does, consoling the people with promises of a better time.   Note: the better days are conditional on good behavior.  Ever think of how our whole redemption story is conditional? Not much unconditional love.   In other words, if you want my love and favor, behave.

Matthew:

I think I will pass on commenting on this gospel.  I don't like it.  I only partially understand the culture Matthew was dealing with in the story.  And most of the commentaries simply try to explain away how harsh the story is. 

 

Them I will bring to my holy mountain

Of all the lines in the readings this morning, the line that touches me the most talks about bringing the people to the holy mountain.  I am touched for two reasons.

First, you know how much I love to go camping in the mountains, and especially the mountains of Yosemite and the Sierras.  In fact, on the 2^nd of September about 8 of us are headed to Kings Canyon, one of two parks just south of Yosemite, to do our annual 10 day back packing trip.

Secondly, the mountain is a metaphor for the state of peace. 

I would like to suggest two observations about going to the mountain of peace.

First, we get there easier and with greater happiness with others.

Secondly, sometimes the mountain is not what we expect or remember from a previous visit.

 

Three little stories of the week. 

Probably July of 2004, as usual, I took a group of 8 guys to my favorite hike in Yosemite.  I call it the Matterhorn Canyon trip. On about the 4^th day we have to hike over Burro Pass, about 11 K feet.  There are three passes on this trip.  Two are called Burro and this one is in the middle.  Matterhorn Canyon is precisely where we camped out for the night. 

We get up and go up the canyon and then up switch backs non-stop for a few hours. It is hard on everyone.  On this trip it is especially hard on one guy.  He is out of shape and gasping for breath.  I am afraid he is not going to make it.

So I get to the pass, dump my pack, return down the switch backs, take his pack, and up we go together.  We make it.  Over the pass and below is my most favorite campsite in the whole world.  We set off and get there, too.

Sitting around the fire that evening, I had a strong sense of accomplishment, contentment, and peace.  I was able to help someone to the top who might not have made it otherwise. This is on top of the fact that I am in heaven.

The second story takes place on the same favorite hike, Matterhorn Canyon, but in 2009.  This time guess who is having the rough time, not because of being out of shape.  The hips are shot.

That year I could go up, but just walking was rough and going down was really rough.  I had to borrow two ski poles.  Rose Banzhaf loaned me the poles and walked with me.  Mike Moran helped me get across streams and watched out for me.

The last morning after an 8 mile hike out, everyone has already been at the little restaurant at the trail head and I am just hobbling along, Rose sticking with me.  At about a mile out, I surrender and Rose calls for help from a car.  Tom & Daniel Fleming come to the rescue.  I will always remember the sight of Daniel coming toward me to take my backpack.

I had made it to the peace of the mountain.  I just needed help to get down.  Still peaceful.  Then, the decision was easy.  I got new hips within 5 months.  And last year we visited my favorite Matterhorn Canyon for the first time.  Talk about gratitude and peace.

The third little story comes from the Matterhorn trip last year.  I was longing to return to that favorite campsite after coming over Burro Pass.  We got there and I am saying, “This can’t be it.”  The campsite, which I have used perhaps 6 times, was a wreck, trees all knocked down, the stream following a different course.  It was the campsite.  60 mile an hour straight line winds had passed through and seemed to hit just that spot especially hard.

We camped there even though I was bummed.  I could see the places where I could remember some of our people camping in previous years.  But it was a mess. 

We spent a whole day there and with time I discovered that across the creek was a really nice level campsite.  That will be for next time.

Two thoughts. 

It is so nice to climb the mountain of peace with company, and even to come down.

The mountain may not be what I expected.  But peace can still be found by searching around.

Rosemary's Blessing

Let us approach the feast of the Holy Spirit with the confidence and conviction that the Spirit of God who has brought us this far is always ahead of us, calling us forward and offering us what we need.

 

Let us ask for the Spirit’s Gifts of:

Wonder and Amazement at God’s faithful, steady, unconditional love for us in all the planned and unplanned times in our lives

Compassion for those who are suffering, isolated, hungry or unemployed

Deep Peace and Calm when we are in the midst of anxiety, worry or loss

Courage in conflictual situations that call us to speak the truth with love

Trust and Confidence that God is with us as God beckons us forward in ways unknown.

 

Come, Holy Spirit, fill us with your Spirit that we may do our part in healing and transforming our world into the realm of God ~ A place of inclusive love, unity, reconciliation, justice and peace.

Reading 1

A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles.

        When the Feast of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.  Without warning there was a sound like a strong wind, gale force—and no one could tell where it came from.  It filled the whole building.  Then, like a wildfire, the Holy Spirit spread through their ranks, and they started speaking in a number of different languages as the Spirit prompted them. 

There were many Jews staying in Jerusalem just then, devout pilgrims from all over the world.  When they heard the sound, they came on the run.  Then when they heard, their own mother tongues being spoken, they were thunderstruck.  They couldn’t for the life of them figure out what was going on, and kept saying, “Aren’t these all Galileans?  How come we’re hearing them talk in our various mother tongues? 

        “Parthians, Medes, and Elamites;

        Visitors from Mesopotamia, Judea, and Cappadocia,

        Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia,

        Egypt and parts of Libya;

        Immigrants from Rome, both Jews and proselytes;

        Even Cretans and Arabs!

“They’re speaking our languages, describing God’s mighty works.”

Reading 2

 A Reading from the first Letter of Paul to the Corinthians

        Sisters and brothers:  No one would say “Jesus is Master!” without the insight of the Holy Spirit.  God’s various gifts are given out everywhere, and are carried out everywhere; but they all originate in God’s Spirit.  God’s various expressions of power are in action everywhere; but God is behind it all.  Each person is given something to do that shows who God is:  Everyone gets in on it, everyone benefits. 

        You can easily enough see how this kind of thing works by looking no further than your own body.  Your body has many parts—limbs, organs, cells—but no matter how many parts you can name, you’re still one body.  It’s exactly the same with Christ.       By means of his one Spirit, we all said good-bye to our partial and piecemeal lives.  We each used to independently call our own shots, but then we entered into a large and integrated life in which he has the final say.  Each of us is now a part of his resurrection body, refreshed and sustained at one fountain—his Spirit—where we all come to drink.  The old labels we once used to identify ourselves—labels like Jew or Greek, slave or free—are no longer useful.

The Lord be with you.       A Reading from the Gospel of John

          Later on that first day of the week, the disciples had gathered together. Fearful of the Jews, they had locked all the doors in the house.  Jesus entered, stood among them, and said, “Peace to you.”  Then he showed them his hands and side. 

The disciples, seeing the Master with their own eyes, were exuberant.  Jesus repeated his greeting: “Peace to you.  Just as the Father sent me, I send you.”

        Then he took a deep breath and breathed into them.  “Receive the Holy Spirit,” he said.  “If you forgive someone’s sins, they are gone for good.  If you don’t forgive sins, what are you going to do with them?”

We are celebrating The Spirit this Sunday and I have a question.  When was the last time you saw The Spirit?  Knowing you folks as well as I do, I would surmise that you have seen The Spirit often, but you may not recognize what you are looking at.  Let me tell you about 3 visits of The Spirit that I have seen.  See what you think.

First, say you are a girl about 10 years old.  May is your birthday month and with your mom’s help you always have had a party.  This year??  Your mom gets inspired.  All the girls you want to get invited will get invited to an afternoon party.  Each girl will come in the family car with her mom or dad or both.   Park on both sides of the street in front of the house.

Instead  of coming into the house, each girl will sit in the car window or lean out of the sun roof or sit on the roof.  The birthday girl will walk up and down the lane talking with the girls on their perches.

I saw it, folks, really, while walking Aviana with Rosemary one afternoon.  For real.  There must have been 10-12 girls perched on their family cars and the birthday girl was walking up and down the lane.  I felt privileged to walk that lane.  Since then I have heard about other street parties in our Preston Hollow neighborhood.   Recognize The Spirit?

 

 

The Spirit also surprised me one other morning when I was walking Aviana.  I noticed that some yellow yard signs with red script  had sprung up. 

For instance.

Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny.  (yes, that's Aviana blessing the property)

 

 

I can complain because rose bushes have thorns or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses.

 

 

 

I will love the light for it shows me the way, yet I will endure the darkness because it shows me the stars.

 

Catch the spirit?

 

 

My third example of the presence of The Spirit.  My parents have lived in this house in this Preston Hollow neighborhood since ’75.  Rosemary & I have lived here since 2005.  Never in this time have I seen so many families walking with dogs and little kids.  I’ve seen lots of little kids practicing to ride their learning wheel loaded bikes.  Rosemary knew personally most of the people who walk their dogs.   Now days, after the tornado destruction and the Virus, there are so many new dogs & dog walkers that we are overwhelmed.  Overwhelmed with delight!
