Readings:

Joshua 5, 9-12, The Lord said to Joshua, "Today I have removed the reproach of Egypt from you."

Psalm 34, Taste and see the goodness of the Lord. (Excellent!)

2 Corinthians 5, 17-21, Whoever is in Christ is a new creation.

Luke 15, 1-32, The Great story of the Prodigal Son.

Joshua

The scene: Moses has died just as the Jewish people are getting ready to enter their new land. Joshua takes the leadership. This book describes the defeat of the Canaanite people, and the division of the land.

In our chapter the Israelite people are camped outside Jericho before attacking the town. Yahweh is saying that he has removed the shame of the people for being slaves in Egypt. They are feasting.

2 Corinthians

This section of Corinthians informs the people that in Christ they are new people, a new creation.

"Welcome in," say Ken & Cindy.

The Prodigal Son: A Work of Art

This story is my favorite of the whole Bible. Note one thing: this is story, not history. The author carefully crafts his work of art to show how much God loves us. Let me give you three observations about the son, three about the father, and an extra three to show you how astounding this story is.

You are having too much fun, Patricia.

First, the younger son:
1. He has no right to ask for inheritance. None. By asking he is saying he wishes the father and the older son dead. A symbolic murder. Father can kill him for this.
1. He works feeding pigs instead of asking for help from the temple. This means he rejects the religious tradition and is considered a traitor not only to the family, but to the religion.
1. So as a horrible failure as a son of the family and a son of the religious tradition, he decides to return. He makes up his little speech and heads home. He is hungry to the point of dying. Do this or die. Many listening Jews would say, Die.
Suit up time, John.

The Father: he actually commits as many crimes and sins as the son.
1. He runs down the road to the son when he sees him coming. A very undignified action. Outrageous.
1. He embraced and kissed the son. Huge violation of Jewish religious custom and law. By doing this the father positions himself outside of the religious & cultural community. He is a reject like the son.
1. He cuts the son’s speech off before he can say finish, eliminating the last sentence, “treat me as you would one of your hired workers.” And to make it worse, he orders the servants to bring the finest robe, ring, and sandals.
"Help, Hue, I can't get this on by myself."

The robe, the ring, and the sandals:
1. The robe: restores the son’s dignity.
1. The ring: gives authority to the son, even equal to the father and certainly more than before he left.
1. The sandals: gives the son freedom. Slaves were not given sandals so they would not run away. The father is doubling the message he gave when he cut the son’s speech off before he could say the third part about being treated as a servant.

A word about the older son, because we so often identify with him.
1. That he tells his father how he feels. Great. In those days, it meant the father can kill him. Today: communication.
1. What is his challenge: acceptance of his brother, his father, and himself; focus on gratitude for all he has; move from trying to be a good boy to loving? Any one of these? Or all? All.
I apologize for so much data. There is even more. The point is that the story is a carefully crafted work of art attempting to describe how totally loving our God is, toward us.

Philippians 3, 17-4, 7, He will change our lowly bodies

Luke 9, 28b-36, The Transfiguration.

The Irish are taking over, Joe with Marsha & Cathy.

Genesis observations

What : book 1 of the whole Bible which includes
1. Origin of people, Creation, Adam & Eve, the apple tree,
2. Cain & Abel,
3. Tower of Babel,
4. The flood, Noah, and the arc,
5. Abraham, The Father of the tribe, Isaac, and Jacob
The stories are mythological and fun reading.

Beware, Hue, it may be contagious.

Author: numerous sources, at least 4 big strands.

When: guess.  Yes, compiled during the Babylonian Captivity, 555 before Christ, to build cohesion in the tribe because it has a history, especially the point that they are chosen to be special by God.

Our selection: The story about Abraham and how God made a pact with the tribe led by Abraham, considered the founder of the tribe.

Welcome back home, Shonda & Bill.

Amusing note: in our reading Yahweh promises a section of land to the Israelite tribe. This genre of literature comes under the title of denial of responsibility, typified by ‘The dog ate my homework” or ‘God made me do it.’

The story is put together after the fact, after the event. The fact is, the Israelite tribe had to remove the Caananite tribe from the land. The Israelites slaughtered them all, men, women, and children, even the live stock.

Their observation years later, ‘Yahweh told us to do it.” Such was the origin of the Holy Land.

Emma has this candle lighting down perfect.

Philippians: another amusing observation

Paul says that his enemies and the enemies of the new Christianity have as their god their stomach. That could apply to me, too.

At your age, Buddy, I could never do what you do every Sunday. Congratulations.

Sunday Homily, 3-16-19, Transfiguration

This morning we celebrate the Transfiguration.

I would propose that our lives are filled with transfigurations, emphasis on the plural.

I would likewise propose that a transfiguration event produces in us peace, joy, and gratitude.

What's going on back there, Cheryl & Grace? You are missing one of your conspirators, Rosemary.

Six examples from my own life.

Kilimanjaro. I climbed that mountain 5 times and each time was a transfiguration. Each time was a special story and filled me with peace, joy, and gratitude. How high was I?   19 thousand feet plus.

Secondly, every time I biked across Iowa with Ragbrai.   About 500 miles, 12-20 thousand other wakos. Talk about peace, joy, and gratitude. I could be riding along with tears in my eyes, just to be there pedaling along on a bright, cool morning, bike riders all around me. When I was younger and stronger, passing lots of people, I would greet everyone with a “Good Morning.”

The Best of all Teams.

More modestly, my early morning spin bike get togethers {M. W, F.) at the Jewish Community Center.   6 A.M. 15-18 people. Survival is a transfiguration, a natural high. And to think that there were days recently when I thought I may never do this again. To top it off, the first time I returned after the lumbar operation (another T.), they threw a welcome back-birthday party at the Monday session. Got me all choked up, which I know you find difficult to believe.

The Great Dougherty Team. Welcome home for Spring Break, Kevin.

Then there is Hilton Head, where Rosemary’s sister & brother in law live. It is always special. This trip tomorrow will be especially beautiful because the azaleas, the camellias, and maybe the Gardenias will all be in bloom. This is a re-booting trip after the disaster of our Thanksgiving trip

Did you notice the beauty of yesterday morning? It even reminded me of many equally cold, calm & beautiful mornings in Yosemite, especially my favorite, the Matterhorn Canyon trail.

Can you find happier kids?

Finally, it is a transfiguration trip for me each Sunday morning when we all get together. It don’t get no better.

Sunday Homily, Mike Carrell, 3-10-19

Lent is preparation for Easter, so the words spoken over those who desire ashes are more appropriately the choice given by the Church from the Mark gospel, ‘The time is fulfilled; the Kingdom of God is at hand; Repent and Believe in the Good News.’

Welcome, Ana-Patricia & Alicia, from the old 10:30 cafetorium Mass at St. Marks.

Last Sunday, led by our musicians, we responded together from the Psalm 92, ‘It is good to give thanks to the Lord.’ That psalm reminds us to begin and end each day saying, ‘Thank you Lord for being with us, here and now. Thank you Lord for the seed that you have sown into our hearts along with a the desire bear good fruit. Let us be led by your Spirit to be Love in this world.

And while we are at it today, welcome to more 10:30 cafetorium Mass goers, Cathy, her daughter, Katy, and Katy's marvelous fiance' Enza from Uganda, no less. But he does not speak Swahili!

Here and now, in every moment of the day, we are the body of Christ in the world. Our mindset should constantly be that we are meant to be Love, in everything we say and do. So,‘In everything give thanks for that is God’s will for us in Christ, Jesus.’

Not to long ago, I was in a waiting room while Judy was being seen by a doctor. There were a hand full of children’s books among the magazines on a table there. They usually have a good intended meaning, so, I took the liberty of choosing Aunt Grace and her nephew about to give birth to a garden. I smiled, and said to myself, ‘With a name like ‘Aunt Grace,’ this is got to be good.

Hi, David, Hi, Caroline.

Before they took a step into what would be their garden, they started with a prayer. Then they began to remove the weeds, cans, bottles, sticks and rocks. When that was done, they broke open the soil and used a wheelbarrow to cover it with an abundance of new mulch, to provide the garden with good soil.

The Most Reliable Jan making sure everyone can go to communion.

This sounds a lot like Lent doesn’t it; with each of us refreshing our garden, and why John has a Sunday each year when we grant God’s loving forgiveness to each other. Lent is a time to be more aware of the people we meet everyday. With goodness and kindness, we can smile more; say thank you more; and you are welcome, more.

The Bona Responds Team on site in Wilmington, NC, to help people with recovery from the Hurricane Michael last Fall.

We can do lots of little things like letting the car and its occupant get in front of us without honking at them. Let’s be aware of the mother with small children. So, what was it that Aunt Grace and her nephew sowed in their garden? Of all things, Potatoes. She taught her nephew how cut up potatoes that were covered with eyes into pieces, so that the eye of each piece could and would be placed in an upright position within the good soil, looking up to the heavens with faith that this would bring forth a bountiful harvest, that they could share with their neighbors.
