    2 Corinthians 8, 7, 9, 13-15,  You excel in every respect.

Mark  5, 21-43, My daughter is at the point of death.  Please come.  Also, Who has touched my clothes?

      Sienna 1

Sienna says, "Hi, Folks, Welcome in.

    Wisdom observations:

One of the 14-15 books of the deutero-canonical books of the bible.  Not part of the orginal Jewish bible, not part of the OT nor the NT, but in between and the subject of controvercy over the centuries.  Were they really part of the bible or not?  How do you know?  Catholic church accepts the books.

Author: not Solomon, but a Jew living in Alexandria, Egypt, who spoke and wrote excellent Greek.

    Angela

Our Dear Angela, too, says, "Welcome, Everybody."

Date: ca. 100-200 before Christ.  How do we know these facts?  Because of text analysis.  For example, while the author wrote in Greek, he uses phrases and expressions that have a Hebrew flavor.  Also, he mentions rulers and places that reveal date and locale.

    Genevieve 3

And Genevieve, too, not to be outdone, says, "Hi, Folks."

    You can do it too

In the gospel today Jesus gives life to a little girl.  I would like to propose that you can give life, too.

I have a story for you from my Dallas Morning News columnist friend, Steve Blow.  I saw his touching story Friday morning.

    Buddy

Buddy says, "Tori, Did you take my cupcake?"

Ever hear of Fausta Twizerimana or Dolena Westergard?  Well, 8 years ago Fausta flew into Dallas and arrived exhausted one evening at the East Dallas Grace United Methodist Church.  She, her five siblings, and her parents were from a refugee camp in Tanzania.  Fausta was 4.

The Church welcomes refugees and this particular evening Dolena Westergard was there.  Dolena met the family and picked up Fausta. She fell in love.

    Brookly & Mom

Says Brooklyn, "Happiness is being in my mom's arms."

The family continued to attend the church and fitted into the fabric of the community.  Dolena watched Fausta and noticed that the girl had a gift for dancing.  She was always doing it.

After four years of watching the girl dance, Dolena, who was now really a god mother to the kids, enrolled Fausta in the Dallas Black Dance Theatre.  Fausta, now 8, fell in love, too.  Never did she miss a session for the next four years.

    Harper-cupcake 3

Harper at 4, says, "Happiness is a cupcake on my birthday."

Then, along comes 2015 and a notice goes up that the Dance Theatre of Harlem was coming to Dallas to audition for positions in their summer workshop.

Fausta has been dancing now for 4 years, is 12, and Dolena thinks it would help the girl just to learn how to audition.  No expectations.

You guessed it, Fausta gets selected.

    Alison 2

Alison says, "Yes, Harper, I agree, especially now that I am officially an American citizen."

Fine, but who is going to buy plane tickets for Fausta and a chaperon, plus about $3,000 in expenses?  This is New York, after all.

You guessed it again, Grace United Methodist.  Last night Fausta sat in a Broadway theatre to watch an African story, The Lion King.

    Gilber-Michelle

Gilbert and Michelle (father & daughter), the Great Kid Watchers.

Grace United Methodist gave life to Fausta, and, in particular, Dolena gave life to Fausta.

This week the nine families of Charleston gave life to me and to our whole nation with their forgiveness.

Just like Jesus gave life to that little girl and to the woman who touched him.

Theme Today: Why do bad things happen to good people.

    Zoe

Says our beautiful Zoe, "Welcome in, Everybody."

    Readings:

Job  38,  1, 8-11,  Who shut within doors the sea.

Psalm 107,    Give thanks to the Lord, his love is ever lasting

2 Corinthians 5, 14-17,   He died for us all.

Mark  4, 35-41, A violent squall came up and waves were breaking over the boat.

      Kevin

                            Kevin, too, "Happy Fathers' Day."

    Job observations:

The Story: Job is a good man, pious, married, affluent, 7 boys, 3 girls, obeys the Lord & his laws.  Satan makes a bet with Yahweh: you take away Job's goodies, he will curse you.  "Deal," says Yahweh.

Shortly after that, one day servants come to tell Job: 1. rustlers have taken his cattle & killed his servants; 2. lightning has killed his sheep & shepherds; 3. more rustlers took his camels & killed their caretakers; 4.  a storm has killed his 10 kids.  Job does not curse.  In fact, he make the famous statement: "Naked I entered the world, naked I leave.  The Lord has given, the Lord has taken away.  Blessed be the name of the Lord."

    Looking at you

And, of course, our beautiful Genevieve, looking right at you (the camera on the second deck),  also says, "Happy Fathers' Day and Happy first day of summer."

Satan then proposes another bet with Yahweh: let me afflict him bodily, he will curse you.  "Deal," says Yahweh.  Job is struck with leprosy and is expelled to the trash heap outside the town.    Job does not curse Yahweh, but he does say, "God, put a curse on the day I was born."

Then Job's wife and three friends all attack him, basically telling him to just die, because he is obviously a bad man.  Job says, "No, I've done nothing wrong."   Job finally complains to God and get a rather critical response.

      Quinn

Another beautiful Quinn, Shannon, says, "Hi, Folks, nice to be here."

Eventually he is rewarded by Yahweh, lives 140 more years and has 7 more sons and 3 daughters, plus more wealth.

How many questions do you have?  How does a person's badness or goodness effect the bad things in his life?  Bad things don't happen to good folks?  The main proposition of Job:  Why do bad things happen to good people?   How about Yahweh making bets with Satan?  What about a Satan?

      Hue

                             Hue, our great sound man.

Author: not Moses.  A compilation of sources.

Structure: a central poetic section with prose entry and exit.  The happy ending was also added.  Again, a parable, a fable, a myth, not history.

    Emma 1

Emma ready for another morning at The Toy World

Date:  the present form was probably put together after the famous Babylonian Exile, i.e., ca. 550 BCE.

Our Selection: after Job finally complains, Yahweh responds rather critically, saying, "Who do you think you are," and, "Do you forget who I am?"

    Wedding

The Wedding in Mechanicsburg, PA with Sarah & Beth, and the United Church of Christ ministers, Karin and John.

Love is patient, Love is kind, Love is accepting

This morning I would like to talk about some things that struck me about the wedding we performed last week in Mechanicsburg, PA.  As I’ve mentioned, the wedding was between two women.

About 14 years ago I performed the wedding of Beth to a neat guy named Doug, a stocky Greek.  They had only been married 6 months when Doug died of a heart attack.  Beth is Rosemary’s niece, the daughter of Joe & Claire, who live in Hilton Head, where Rosemary & I love to go for Thanksgiving.

    3 sisters.

The 3 Sisters, Rosemary, Patty, and Claire.

Beth decided to stay in the house she and Doug owned and stay in her job.  During the next few years she got involved with a very open United Church of Christ.  Sarah played the organ.  They got together and developed a warm friendship.  Eventually this lead to their marriage last Saturday.

I don’t know how you all feel about same sex marriages.  I personally would have loved to sit down with Beth and have her tell me how it all came about, first marrying a guy, now marrying her best friend.  Whatever, I did not have the chance.  However, I am convinced from all my years of experience with gay people as a priest and a psychotherapist that no gay person really chooses this path.  I have worked with so many who agonized over coming out.  It involves hatred and abuse, even from family members.

The first thing that struck me at the wedding.  Did you recognize the 1 Corinthians passage?  I confess that after performing so many weddings where I heard the passage read, I eventually was put off by it.  Until a few years ago.  I suddenly realized it is helpful for me to be reminded of what love really is.

At the wedding I heard Beth’s sister read the passage with such feeling and tears that I and lots more of the 200 more or less people there, we were all in tears.  Kristine herself took 30 minutes because she was in tears.   I was so touched and so struck.

      The Team

                                                          What a team.

The second thing that struck me was the cordiality and warmth of the present pastor, John, and the previous interim pastor, Karin.  I thanked them and told them how I sensed a kinship of spirit among us.

Karin was the one who suggested we go bare footed as a sign of respect for the sanctuary where we were performing the wedding.   It was a first for me.  Should I do the same here?

      Zoe-Buddy

Zoe & Buddy say, "Hey, don't forget about us."

The final thing that struck me was the whole hearted acceptance of Beth on the part of, not only her parents, but all the McGinn Clan.  Rosemary had 3 brothers and two sisters.  One brother died a few years ago.  All these siblings have kids and all of them were there, most of them with their kids.  Their support was total.

Kristine’s reading about love being patient & kind, the pastors John & Karin, and the total McGinn family acceptance of Beth.  A powerful, moving weekend.

Where are you on the whole phenomenon of same sex marriages?

A special financial report from Grace, our board president:

On behalf of John Stack Ministries I would like to present the financials for the first quarter of 2015.

First we want to thank the community for their past and present generosity. We are so thank for all you do and contribute.

The starting balance on January 1 was approximately 14,000.00 and ending March 31 with a balance of 12,000.00.  That being said we are running 2000.00 short for the first quarter.

We have a reserve amount of 38,000.00 that we have available to tap into if our situation requires.

Weekly expenses are approximately 1200.00 per week which includes rent, insurance, music and salary. Rosemary reports the weekly income in the weekly blog so the community can see our weekly deficits which can range from 200.00 to a 400.00 short fall each week.

If you are able to contribute a small amount more each month we would greatly appreciate your help.  We will review our financials in 6 months and report our situation at that time.

Thank you to the choir for the outstanding music, the family’s who attend, Kevin and Georgie and also to John Stack, John Cade, and Mike Carroll for their inspirational homilies, in making us think about our daily lives and wanting  to be better individuals. And to Rosemary for all you do that doesn’t get mentioned, as well as your endearing end of mass prayers!

    Thank you,  Grace

    Beth 1

The Wedding of Sarah & Beth (Rosemary's niece), Saturday, Mechanicsburg, PA, United Church of Christ, with ministers Karen and John, plus about 200 friends and supporters.

Todays readings talk about God’s love for his people, in Exodus about Moses and in Mark about Jesus’ expressions of love with his friends.  The words of Jesus (“This is my body”; “this is my blood)” were an established ritual formula repeated in early Christian gatherings as part of their remembrance of Jesus and the Passover he shared with them before he died.  Mark’s Gospelwas the first, written about 25-30 years after Jesus’ death.  Even before Mark, Paul was writing in his letters about our being the body of Christ and about our being intimately united with him.

In the homily I want to take this opportunity to talk some about special human relationships, couples in partnership or marriage.

    Beth 2

Two very hospitable ministers, Karen & John.  Note the bare feet, out of reverence for the sanctuary.

Homily:   Last Sunday Stack talked about relationship and how Christian theology refers to God one, and yet as Father, Son and Holy Spirit, three persons in relationship.  After I planned to talk about Corpus Christi today, I spent over 8 hours yesterday at a workshop with over 200 couples.  Most of them were married couples married anywhere from only 4 months to 45 years; some were engaged. The event is called “Safe  Conversation” and is led by Harville Hendrix and Helen Hunt.

It is based on the new science of couple relationships or marriage.

    1)  Brain science:  At the time scientists had already mapped out the known world on the outside, Sigmund Freud was mapping out the inner world, the human mind and the unconscious.  His emphasis was on the individual.  It wasn’t till the 1990’s that neuroscientists began to map the brain and better understand its workings, especially the notion of neuroplasticity, that the brain is changeable by means of the thoughts we run through it.

The brain has a ‘mind of its own’.   The lower/primitive brain (brain stem) is in place to protect and defend (like a crocodile).  Anxiety and fear are triggered when any  danger is sensed.  Can order production of cortisol and adrenalin to help protect and defend, and from which we can experience fear and anxiety.  The higher/newer brain (frontal cortex) is in place to think and analyze, cooperate and create (like a wise owl).   Can order production of endorphins, dopamine from which we can experience joy.

    Begin

Leo, the candle lighter at work.

    2)  Marriage research: We now know you can’t effectively help a couple in relationship by trying to ‘fix’ one of partners; rather, must provide healing work on the space between the partners, the relationship behaviors themselves.  We also know that negativity is a high predictor of relationship distress and of risk for divorce. Negativity is a natural stage of relationship, when we wake up and find out our partner is different from us or doesn’t match our ideal dream partner.

    3)  Safe Conversation:  The key component, which anyone can learn, is to practice ‘safe conversation’ again and again and again and again.  Safe conversation provides what it implies, safety.  It calms the crocodile and reduces negativity.  It does this through the structure of the conversation. This allows the couple to again experience deep joy and aliveness as they did in the first stage of their relationship.

Question:   Are you up to date on the new science of relationship?  And How are you at eliminating negativity in your relationships? These couple workshops are provided currently with no fee, and include childcare and breakfast and lunch.  In addition there are child and teen programs offered at the same time so families are on same page in the process. Stack posted information on the last two workshops in his blog.I don’t know when the next one will be, but I invite you to look at their  web site – www.familywellnessdallas.org
