Sunday Homily 6-14-09, Eucharist

Readings Exodus 24, 3-8; Psalm 116, I will take the cup of Salvation, and call on the Name of the Lord; Hebrews 9, 11-15; Mark 14, 12-26

Exodus: 8 points on the readings, including Exodus–(2 on Exodus, 4 on points from the other readings, 2 more on Exodus

    1.  This is the 2nd book of the Torah/Pentateuch, the first section of the Old Testament.  Deuteronomy, which we visited last week, is the 5th & last book.

    2.  Story: This is a fabulous and edifying fable that tells how the Israelites got out of slavery in Egypt with the leadership of Moses. 

    3.  Passover: the night the angel passed over the first born male children of the Jews because they had smeared lamb blood on their door posts.  But the angel killed all the Egyptian first born sons to make Pharaoh let the people go.  Remember, this is not history, rather like a fable, like Aesop's Fables.  The Last Supper was a Passover meal.  

    4.  Covenant vs Contract: in a contract two parties agree to do something.  If one fails, the contract is often null.  In a covenant two people agree, and even if one party fails, the other party honors the covenant.  The Covenant between Yahweh & the People:  the people will honor Yahweh as their only god; Yahweh will protect and care for them as his chosen, and bring them into a new land.

    5.  Sacrifice & holocaust: ancient tribal belief that I must offer to my god (s) things precious to me to appease the god's anger or win his favor, for example, animals, prisoners, and the most beautiful girl in the community.  Jesus was seen as this sacrifice to appease the god, and also as the high priest who usually performed the sacrifice.  Thus the emphasis on blood & death.

    6.  12 tribes: the 12 sons of the patriarch Jacob (or Israel; the 3 patiarchs were Abraham, Isaac, & Jacob-Israel).

    7.  Author & Date of Exodus: not Moses.  Rather a compilation of material from different centuries, that was mostly put together after the Babylonian Captivity, e.g., ca. 550 BCE.

    8.  Our Selection from Exodus: the people have been wandering in the desert and are now being given laws and customs they must observe.  The Covenant is being sealed.

The Special Meal

As usual, last Thursday & Friday I am preparing thoughts and ideas for our homily today.  I tell Rosemary that I want to talk about the theme of special meals in connection with Eucharist and that I am going to take a big risk and put it together after the Collin County Classic Bike Rally.  Why?  Because I am anticipating that the meal they serve to the riders after the ride will be special, a meal from heaven. 

After the race yesterday, however, I totally was not hungry.  My stomach is not sick, just tight from so much exercise.    In fact, if I want anything it is  half of a cold watermellon.  I even pass up some tremendous food at the Eshelbrenners where they were celebrating Gloria's visit from Seattle.  She is getting married this Labor Day and guess who is doing it. 

So I head home and tell Rosemary please get the watermellon ready.  She opens it and, ugh, it is over ripe.  So I go to Tom Thumb and finally about 3:30 I have the first bite of watermellon.  Folks, it was watermellon from heaven.   I did not have a big feast, but I had a special meal of watermellon & a salad.

What is your special meal?  Your favorite?  Your favorite restaurant?  Favorite meal of the year?  Thanksgiving?  I talk about this because special meals are the form on which the Eucharist was originally built.  I see 3 characteristics about a special meal that are common with good Eucharistic celebration.

    First, camaraderie and conviviality.  I expected that we would have a bunch of our people at the McKinney North High School dining room for lunch.  It would have been an electric ambiance with everyone just finished the run.  It did not turn out that way.  Thanksgiving can have this characteristic.  Our Vines celebrations have it.

    Second, quality food and drink and often special food.  Thanksgiving we have turkey, birthdays have ice cream & cake with candles, weddings have special cakes.  In Tanzania a goat was roasted over a spit to celebrate a wedding.  It lasted all day long.  Which brings up time.  Special meals take an hour or more when it is really working.  We at Vines spend an hour, maybe a little more.  We have good wine and good bread, home made bread. 

    Thirdly, rituals.  At Thanksgiving we often say a prayer of thanks.  At weddings, cake cuttings.  At special events, blessings can be mentioned.  At Vines we have our rituals, the sign of peace, the music, the readings and great homilies.  Next week we have a special blessing for the old dads.

I would propose that special meals are the foundation for Eucharistic celebration.

     Christmas observations:

    1.  Celebration of Christmas was banned in Boston up until ca. 200 years ago.  The Puritan influence.  They had seen the corruption of Rome and the inquisition.  They feared and hated Rome and Catholics.
    2. Rome had a feast of Saturnalia, which was connected with the Winter Solstice.  It was a feast of the harvest and of light, light returning in the northern hemisphere.  For centuries Roman Catholicism refused to honor the feast, but eventually adopted it as a date for Christ’s birth.
    3. The winter solstice had been celebrated for 10,000 years, back when humans started farming.
    4. Christmas Eve, Kinshasa, Zaire, 1977.  I was in Kinshasa, Zaire (now, The Congo), Christmas, 1977 and attended a Christmas Eve Mass that was marvelous, singing that went on forever and dancing on the part of the African priest in a very colorful set of vestments.  Having a good set of kidneys helps because the celebration goes on  2 ½ hours.

    Seen The Spirit Lately?

    Ever get the feeling that the world is just getting worse every year, more wars, more killing, more kids being hurt, everything worse?  Where is the spirit of peace and caring?

    I would like to propose the spirit is here.  Good things are taking place.  Let me give you 4 examples that have just taken place.

    The first I heard about took place during the ice storm the week after Thanksgiving.  I35 going north through Denton became a parking lot when 18 wheelers got stuck and blocked the highway.  This happened that Friday afternoon and the highway was probably down for the night. 

    The pastor of some church in the area heard about the people on the highway.  He gathered a bunch of his community and out they went to the highway with food, hot drinks, and blankets for those who needed them.  Some people were even invited into people’s homes.

    You folks would do this.

    At the same time that afternoon our neighbors called to invite us to lunch on the grill because our electricity was off.  They had a gas grill.  The lady across the street offered to let us stay at her house.  She had electricity.  We were on the second of our two day return drive from Thanksgiving at Rosemary’s sister’s house in Hilton Head.

    Secondly, you remember that I worked in Oklahoma after the tornado.  I heard of a lady who is making special Christmas ornaments for people who have lost all their precious ornaments.  I thought about those people whose houses I helped to clear out and thought what a nice idea.

    Thirdly, three celebs, two sports stars and one singer.

    Ever hear of Andre Johnson of the Houston Texans, a wide receiver.  For the 7th year in a row he took 12 underprivileged kids on a shopping trip at Kids R Us.  They had 80 seconds, his number, to grab what they wanted.  He even chipped in an Xbox 360 for each kid.  17 thousand bucks.  Sounds like Love for the Kids.

    Also, Damien Lillard, 23, a hot new player for Portland.  He took a whole bus load of kids on a shopping trip.

    Then, the singer Beyonce went into a Wal-mart, bought 750 $50 gift cards for everyone that moment in the Wal-Mart.

    Fourth.   Out of bad stuff, good stuff.  A grandmother was caring for 9 young kids somewhere here in Dallas.  She had bought their presents and had them hidden in her apartment.  Yes, you guessed it, they all go stolen.  The story got out and she received more presents than she could ever have afforded. 

    Where are you seeing The Spirit of peace and caring this Christmas?  How are you contributing to it?

     Acts observations again:

    WHO: same as author of Gospel of Luke, Chapter 15 of 28

    WHEN: late 60’s, before 70

    WHY: To further Paul’s desire to make “The Way” of Jesus’ followers acceptable to people in the Greco-Roman world of his time.

    Today’s reading from Chapter 15 of Acts gives us another example of how the followers of Jesus at that time were originally Jewish. We have no documents from the 20 years following Jesus’ death. Scholars conjecture that there were writings from that time that became sources for the authors of the gospels of Matthew and Luke.

    My Peace I give to you

    My Peace I give to you.  What a beautiful gift.  The Best.  How do you find it?   

    I would like to talk about finding the peace this morning.  I would propose that the gift is all around us.  It is here in our community, it is in our homes, it is in Tom Thumb, it is in our city.  I would suggest that there are big and little packages of peace.  For example, some little packages that give me peace.

    First, taking Aviana, our dog, for a walk.  Rosemary takes Aviana for two or three afternoon walks.  Along the way she gets to know so many of our neighbors.

    Brandon, the guy with all the personality, also says, "Hi, Folks."

     

     

    I take Aviana for 3 walks in the morning, including her first walk at ca. 4:15.   Want to know what peace is?   Watching her do her business quickly, especially both of them on this 5 minute walk.  It is short because she knows that she will get her breakfast right away afterward. 

    Secondly, try biking.  Sometimes riding my bike with Rosemary around White Rock and going down the White Rock Creek Trail, I cannot believe how delightful this is.   On The Trail I often think, 'I cannot really be in Dallas,' the scenery is so beautiful and natural.

    Thirdly, I find great peace in doing weddings and, in particular, getting together with each couple to plan their wedding.  Just this past Friday and Saturday I spent an hour with two delightful couples. Saturday’s couple was Lisa Anderlick, John and Karen’s daughter.  

    These daily and weekly events, while being really profound to me, are what I could call smaller packages of peace.    Want to know about a Big Packages?

    First, how can I not be touched with peace every time we all come together?   Remember that morning that it was pouring rain at 9:30?  Rosemary and I both said that few people would find their way here in that storm. 

    What happened?  We had 65 plus people.  The kids are a special event of peace.  Our music.   And just everybody.   The peace of our community stays with me all week long.

    Secondly, Cinco de Mayo!   What?, you say.  Cinco de Mayo? 

    This big Mexican feast is also a special day for Rosemary & me.  We are celebrating our 11th anniversary.  I know you figured Rosemary could not stand to live so long with this old obsessive bachelor.  However, we have made it and each day brings more peace and more fun.

    Another beautiful Sunday thanks to Shonda & Bethany, Ray & David.

     

     

    One of the fun things  takes place most weekday mornings, when I return from the J at around 7:15.   I wake up Rosemary with coffee and newspaper in hand.  Then I return to the kitchen, get my cup of coffee, and proceed to hop on the bed where we talk and discuss the day.  Aviana is also part of the event.

    Unfortunately, even though coffee is supposed to be a stimulant, when I drink it after working out, it has the opposite effect.  Ten minutes and I tell Rosemary I am falling asleep and think I will take a 15 minute nap.  Of course, I get a comment like, “What a fascinating conversationalist you are.”

    A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles       

    Peter stood up and, backed by the other eleven, spoke out:  “All Israel, know this:  There’s no longer room for doubt—God made him Master and Messiah, this Jesus whom you killed on a cross.”

            Cut to the quick, those who were there listening asked Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers!  Brothers!  So now what do we do?” 

            Peter said, “Change your life.  Turn to God and be baptized each of you, in the name of Jesus the Christ, so your sins are forgiven.  Receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.  The promise is targeted to you and your children, but also to all who are far away—whomever, in fact, our God invites.”  He went on in this vein for a long time, urging them over and over, “Get out while you can; get out of this sick and stupid culture!” 

            That day about three thousand took him at his word, were baptized and were signed up.  They committed themselves to the teaching of the apostles, the life together, the common meal, and the prayers.

     A Reading from the First Letter of Peter

            My sisters and brothers:  If you’re treated badly for good behavior and continue in spite of it to be a good servant, that is what counts with God.

            This is the kind of life you’ve been invited into, the kind of life Jesus lived.  He suffered everything that came his way, so you would know that it could be done, and also know how to do it, step-by-step. 

            He never did one thing wrong,

            Not once said anything amiss.

            They called him every name in the book and he said nothing back.  He suffered in silence, content to let God set things right.  He used his servant body to carry our sins to the Cross, so we could be rid of sin—free to live the right way.  His wounds became your healing. 

    You were lost sheep with no idea who you were or where you were going.  Now you’re named and kept for good by the Shepherd of your souls.

              Jesus said to his followers:  “Let me set this before you as plainly as I can.  If a person climbs over or through the fence of a sheep pen, instead of going through the gate, you know he’s up to no good—a sheep rustler!  The shepherd walks right up to the gate, the gatekeeper opens the gate to him, and the sheep recognize his voice.  He calls his sheep by name and leads them out.  The sheep follow, because they are familiar with his voice.  They won’t follow a stranger’s voice, but will scatter because they aren’t used to it.”

              Jesus told that simple story, but his listeners had no idea what he was talking about.  So, he tried again.  “Listen. I’ll be explicit.  I am the Gate for the sheep.  All those others are up to no good—they’re sheep stealers.  I am the Gate.  Anyone who goes through me will be cared for—will freely go in and out and find pasture.  A thief is only there to steal and kill and destroy.  I came so they can have real and eternal life—more of it, and better than they ever dreamed of.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    The Gospel of Matthew and the Jewish Synagogue—Talk Six

    For Matthew the Easter moment is the climax of his story, God’s ultimate revelation. 

    Before we consider the many contradictions in the Biblical accounts of the resurrection, let’s see where there’s agreement.  They all say that the Easter experience forced them to see Jesus with a radically new understanding.  Whatever Easter was, its effects on those who live in time and space were real, even measurable.  E.g., the behavior of the disciples was changed: Those, who at the moment of Jesus’ arrest had forsaken him and run off, suddenly demonstrated major courage.  They showed a willingness to go anywhere and do anything that would support the reality they had come to know.  Also, following their Easter experience the disciples found they had to alter their understanding of God.  The concept of the oneness of God, so central to Judaism, had to be stretched to the place where Jesus could be included in that God definition. 

    [In the New Testament, Paul was the first to speak of this when he said that somehow the reality of God had been met and engaged in the life of this Jesus (2 Cor. 5:19).  He and others began to try to explain how it had happened that “God was in Christ.”  Paul says that, whatever Easter was, God had somehow brought Jesus into the very meaning of God (Rom. 1:1-4).  Next, Mark suggested that at Jesus’ baptism, God had infused the human Jesus with the divine presence and reality.  Then Matthew, and soon after, Luke, suggested that God had entered Jesus at the moment of conception (Matt. 1, 2 & Luke 1, 2). Finally, John, the last gospel, suggested that there never was a moment in time or in history when Jesus was not part of the reality we call God.]

    The New Testament is clear about the nature of the Christ experience being some kind of God experience, one that is transcendent.  This raises a question:  Can an experience be real if the explanations of that experience are inconsistent and divergent?  Spong certainly thinks so, and explains it as a human language issue.  There is no “objective language” or “God language.”  We have to talk about our experiences of God in human language.  And every word human beings speak is a subjectively understood symbol

    There is agreement in the New Testament about the reality of the Easter experience, but there’s a wide divergence in explaining that reality.   The New Testament provides us with five story themes that put the Easter experience into words.  There is little consistency in them. 

                           1st Example:  Paul knows nothing about the burial tradition with Joseph of Arimathea. The Joseph character is not introduced until Mark’s gospel.  Mark calls Joseph a “ruler of the Jews” (Mark 15:43).  Matthew calls him “a rich man” (Matt. 27:57).  Luke calls him “a good and righteous man” (Luke 23:51).  John calls him “a disciple of Jesus” and adds that together Joseph and Nicodemus performed the burial, and made the burial quite elaborate with “about a hundred pounds” of “myrrh and aloes” (John 17: 38-40).         

        2nd Example:  Paul has no story of a tomb, so no one visits or finds it empty.  The women coming to the tomb at dawn on the first day of the week enters tradition in Mark, though there’s no agreement about who they were, except for Mary Magdalene.  Mark names Salome (Mark 19:1); then Matthew, writing with the Mark Gospel right in front of him, omits Salome (Matt. 28:1).  Luke adds Joanna and “some other women” unnamed (Luke 24:10).  John insists Mary Magdalene was alone (John 20:1).  And did the women see Jesus at or near the tomb?  Mark says no.  Matthew says yes.  Luke says no.  John says yes; but only Mary Magdalene and only on her second visit.  Of course, these inconsistencies are a literalist’s nightmare.                                                                                     

    3rd Example:  Where were the disciples when they experienced all this?  Paul gives no place or setting for his list of those the Christ appeared to.  Mark has a “messenger” (an angel) simply announce the resurrection and has the women tell the disciples to go to Galilee and “there you will see him.”  However, Mark never describes that appearance (Mark 16:8).  Matthew says it was in Galilee that the disciples saw Jesus, and he describes it in detail (Matt. 28:16-20).  Luke says that appearances of the raised Christ were never seen in Galilee by anyone, only in or near Jerusalem (Luke 24).  Luke adds that Jesus’ appearances continued “for forty days” and then came to an abrupt end.  John says the original appearance of the resurrected Jesus to the disciples was in Jerusalem the evening of the first Easter in an upper room.  He also says this experience was repeated in almost identical form eight days later (John 20:19-29).  John’ also says there was another Easter experience in Galilee, but much later.         

     4th Example: Who was the first to “see” the resurrected Jesus?  Paul says it was Peter.  Mark never has the raised Christ appear to anyone.  Matthew says it was the women at the tomb.  Luke says it was Cleopas and his companion in the village of Emmaus.  John says it was Mary Magdalene alone.  

    5th Example: Was the resurrection physical?  Paul seems to say no. He says that “what is raised is imperishable” suggesting something that is no longer subject to death and decay (1 Cor. 15:42).  He adds “it is sown a physical body; it is raised a spiritual body” (1Cor. 15:44).  Also in Paul Jesus does not rise; he is raised.  So who or what raised him? Into what was he raised?  Paul writes: “It is Christ Jesus who died, yes, who was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God (1 Rom. 8:34).  The implication is that Jesus was raised not back into the life of this world, but to the right hand of God.

    There are three stories in the Hebrew scriptures of people being raised into God that could have supplied Paul with the image of resurrection that he appears to hold—a resurrection that is “real”, but not physical? 

    First, Enoch, known as the father of Methuselah and grand-father of Noah, was introduced with a line in the Book of Genesis:  “Enoch walked with God, and he was not, because God took him” (Gen. 5:24).    

    [Interest in Enoch led to the Book of Enoch, written about a hundred years BCE.  It became listed as an Apocryphal O.T. book (so not in the Catholic Bible).  It was lost in the late 4th century and re-discovered in Ethiopia in the 18th century.  Enoch’s story included the part that, as a reward for “walking with God” on this earth, he was said to have escaped death to live in the presence of God.]

    Second, there is Moses, to the Jews God’s greatest prophet.  In Deuteronomy it says only God was present with Moses when he died. (Deut. 34:5, 6).  A common story was that Moses didn’t really die, but rather God raised him into the life of God. 

    And third, Elijah; it was said he was raised from life on earth to life in God.  His story was quite dramatic.  He was transported into the presence of God by a magical fiery chariot, drawn by magical fiery horses (2 Kings 2). 

    These three O.T. resurrection stories would be well known by Paul, and by Matthew, since they were part of the Law of the Torah, the scripture scrolls read in the Synagogue in their entirety, each and every year.  Any one of these, or all three, could have shaped how the resurrection of Jesus was understood in a Jewish context.

    On the other hand, we also can see the resurrection story evolving and becoming more and more physical.   Mark never has the raised Christ appear to anyone; in his story the women fled in fear and said nothing to anyone.  Matthew, contrary to Mark, his source, has the women grasp the risen Christ, taking “hold of his feet”. This is the first hint in the Easter narratives that ‘resurrection’ was beginning to be viewed as the physical resurrection of a deceased body.  Of course, by the time this physical aspect of resurrection appeared, it was already the ninth decade, about year 82 CE, 52 years after Jesus’ death. 

    Luke is the gospel author who does the most to transform ‘resurrection’ into something understood as physical resuscitation.  The raised Jesus can walk, talk, and eat, all physical accomplishments. And Luke has the story of the appearance of Jesus to Cleopas and his travel companion.  Jesus suddenly, out of nowhere, began to walk with them, unrecognized. At the end of the story “he vanished out of their sight” (Luke 24:29).  He just de-materialized!  So even in the physical understanding of resurrection in Luke’s story, there was a mysterious non-physical reality.

    The resurrection narratives are contradictory and confusing, but all of them were written out of the conviction that the boundary between God and the human, between heaven and earth, between life and death, had been broken in the life of this Jesus.  The early followers of Jesus had tried to use words to explain what was beyond words.  Their stories were later literalized in Christian history so much that ‘resurrection’ came to be seen as a literal, objective miraculous event.  Claims were made that violate everything we know about how the world operates and how death functions. 

    A body deceased for three days came back to life.  A heart that had not beaten from Friday till Sunday started to beat again.  Brain cells, deprived of oxygen for at least thirty-six hours, were restored to fully functioning health.  Flesh that had already begun to smell of decay, was rehabilitated.  The natural world was turned upside down by the invasion of the supernatural world.  Literalism produces disturbing, irrational narratives. 

    It’s no wonder why Christianity, presented in literalistic terms seems to more and more people in the modern world to be unbelievable!   Can the resurrection of Jesus be real and yet the explanations of the resurrection be nothing more than mythical language?  Should mythical language ever be literally understood?  Our answers to those questions may actually determine the future of the Christianity itself.

    Next week, the final chapter—a pulling together of how the Matthew Gospel was written as a liturgical document;  how it was told against the background of the liturgical year of the Jewish synagogue;  and how Matthew wrote it as an interpretation of the teaching and the meaning of Jesus himself.

  • Sunday Homily 7-24-11, 17th Ordinary Time

    Readings: Wisdom 3,1-9; Responsorial Psalm 23; 1 Cor 15, 20-23; John 14, 1-8

    Intro to the Readings
    The readings today have been chosen for our funeral Mass for Ray Williams. The first reading is from the Book of Wisdom. The main theme of this reading is in the very first sentence, namely that God takes care of his own.
    The second reading is from Paul’s letter to the Corinthians and it really focuses on the one thing we as Christians have to keep us going, namely that because we believe that God raised Jesus from the dead, that we too, in time will also be raised from the dead. Death is not the end but merely the entrance to a whole different existence.
    John’s Gospel again takes up the theme of a life hereafter and talks about the fact that God is preparing a place for each one of us.
    In the midst of all of these readings, our responsorial psalm is Psalm 23, “The Lord is my Shepherd”

    Homily

    Elizabeth Kubler-Ross has studied death and dying probably as much as anyone. She was a Swiss doctor, and I remember many year ago attending one of her seminars on the subject in Sacramento CA. During the session she showed a very brief film, which I will always remember. She was discussing how we grieve, and the film showed a herd of elephants gathered around an elephant that had just died. The elephants had formed a circle and they each had their trunk resting on the dead elephant. They were grieving. Today, we too are really not that different. One of our community, Ray Williams, has died. Our faith at a time like this offers us hope, hope that there is a life beyond this one, a place where “every tear will be wiped away”, a place where we will all meet again. That is our faith, and it keeps us going at a time like this.

    But a death is also a time for each one of us to reflect on our own mortality! Its one of those things where you can run but you can’t hide from!! And today I would like us to focus on our own lives. How should we be living? Ray Williams was a man I knew only slightly. For a long time I would meet him when I went around with the sacrament of the sick during our mass. He stood back there and quietly received the sacrament. I met him once at his home when Gayle and I brought communion to him. But last Tuesday I learned a great deal more about him and would like to hold him up as an example of someone who seemed to live out his faith in everyday quietness. During the eulogies two people stood up and shared their memories of Ray. One was an elderly gentleman from Taiwan whom Ray had gotten to know through a Plano city project to twin Plano with a city in Taiwan. But it was what the man said which will stay with me for a while. I don’t know how long he has been living in the US but he said that Ray was the first American home he had ever been invited into. Ray lived hospitality! The second person was a young Mexican man who told us how Ray had made such a huge difference in his life and in the lives of many poor Mexican kids by coaching them in various soccer leagues. Some of these young kids went on the win soccer scholarships to college. Ray made a difference in these kids’ lives.

    During this time when we mourn Ray, let’s also take his example of living life to it’s fullest by seeing God in those around him. St. Irenaeus is reported to have said, “the glory of God is man fully alive”. From listening to the different people share their memories about Ray Williams it is no stretch to say that Ray was one of those people. Our community is a little less by his absence; heaven is a bit better by his presence.

    Rosemary's Blessing:

    I just finished a marvelous book, The Last Green Valley by Mark Sullivan.  It is the story of a young couple and 2 young sons making their way from the Ukraine westward at the end of WWII.

    At the end of the mother’s life many years later when she was 80+ years old a friend asked the woman, Adeline to describe the most important things she learned over the course of her long and remarkable life.

    Adeline thought about that for a little while before saying, “Don’t chew on the bad things that happen to you, dear.  Try to see the beauty in every cruelty. It sets you free.  Forgive hurt if you want to heal a broken heart.  Try to be grateful for every setback or tragedy, because by living through them, you become stronger.  I see the hand of God in that.”

    Readings:  

    Exodus 24, 3-8, We will do everything the Lord has told us.

    Exodus:   8 points on the readings, including 2 on Exodus, 4 on points related to the readings, & 2 more on Exodus

        1.  This is the 2nd book of the Torah/Pentateuch, the first section of the Old Testament.  Deuteronomy, which we visited last week, is the 5th & last book.  Genesis is the first book.    

    2.  Story: This is a fabulous and entertaining fable that tells how the Israelites got out of slavery in Egypt with the leadership of Moses. 

        3.  Passover: the night the angel passed over the first born male children of the Jews because they had smeared lamb's blood on their door posts.  But the angel killed all the Egyptian first born sons to make Pharaoh let the people go.  Remember, this is not history, rather like a fable, like Aesop's Fables.  There is a story about the burning bush in the Holy Land, for tourists.  Tourists are told this bush was the bush that burst into flame and from which Yahweh spoke to Moses.

        4.  Covenant vs Contract: in a contract two parties agree to do something.  If one fails, the contract is often null.  In a covenant two people agree, and even if one party fails, the other party honors the covenant.  The Covenant between Yahweh & the People:  the people will honor Yahweh as their only god; Yahweh will protect and care for them as his chosen, and bring them into a new land.

        5.  Sacrifice & holocaust: ancient tribal belief that I must offer to my god (s) things precious to me to appease the god's anger or win his favor, for example, with animals, prisoners, and the most beautiful girl in the community.  Jesus was seen as this sacrifice to appease the god, and also as the high priest who usually performed the sacrifice.  Thus the emphasis on blood & death.  Today scripture scholars as well as ordinary folks don't believe any more in a God who was so angry that he demanded special sacrifice.  We do not have a vengeful, angry God.

        6.  12 tribes: the 12 sons of the patriarch Jacob (or Israel; the 3 patiarchs were Abraham, Isaac, & Jacob-Israel).

        7.  Author & Date of Exodus: not Moses.  Rather a compilation of material from different centuries, that was mostly put together after the Babylonian Captivity, e.g., ca. 550 BCE.

        8.  Our Selection from Exodus: the people have been wandering in the desert and are now being given laws and customs they must observe.  The Covenant is being sealed.

    The Eucharist in daily life

    Folks, it has been an amazing five weeks of peak human experiences for Rosemary and me, like champagne events.  Two weddings, two reunions, and Andy’s memorial right in the middle week, the one Sunday I have been here in the past five.  Each of these experiences has given me a deeper appreciation of life and friendship. 

    Rosemary had her fun family reunion in NJ coupled with the 5 Boro Bike Tour of NY, we along with 33 thousand others.

    The next weekend we celebrated Jessica Bresson’s wedding in CT.  Two weeks ago we celebrated Kate Banzhaf’s wedding in CO Springs. 

    Then, last weekend a reunion of the S.J. class with whom I spent the first 7 years of my Jesuit life.  We gathered in New Orleans, my former home office, which in itself was quite emotional.  I love the city, have not been back in over 10 years, and could see all those Katrina scenes from television in my mind.  Many of us spent a lot of time with the refugees who ended up in Reunion Arena.

    Observations about my class & the reunion.

    20 plus guys showed up with their wives. I have to tell you, I did not recognize some of my classmates.  I literally asked a number of the guys, “Who are you?’  Most of us are in our early 70’s. 

     I have not seen the majority since ’65, when we finished up 3 years at Spring Hill College, Mobile.  Most of us were shipping out to various internships around the country.  I lucked out and got to return to Dallas for the first time in 7 years, and I taught at the high school for 3 years, one of the most fun experiences of my life.

    As our conversations progressed, I was struck at how each person was at home in their skin.  I saw no posturing or pretense.  These are high octane guys and each has used his talents well as college professors, a doctor, stock brokers, real-estate.  One guys even works for the Atomic Energy Commission in Vienna.

    I was deeply touched by the presence of one guy’s gentle but severely handicapped son of about 20 years.  Two of the guys had lost their dear wives recently and their stories brought tears to my eyes. 

    I also discovered & appreciated a spiritual depth in everyone.  They are progressive and disappointed with the turning back the clock on Vatican II.  The few who attend Mass do so because they know a priest who talks to where they are at.

    One of my favorite questions to ask people, as you know, is what is the special blessing or gift in your life since the last time we met.  This group shared on this level from the start and did it with incredible appreciation. 

    Two of the guys are still Jesuit priests, one working in Peru, the other working with Nativity Schools in NYC.  These are Jesuit schools focused primarily on underprivileged boys & girls.

    Finally I saw appreciation, of life, of friendship, and of community.  I love these guys and am stunned at how rich it is to be with them.  The group last met 8 years ago and has met maybe 3-4 times, once in Mobile, in Maryland, & I think in Boston.  In appreciation of this renewal of old friendships & my love for them, I plan to invite the group to consider meeting again in two years, same place.  It is already being talked about.

    One last point, a Eucharist event.  John Ross Sima, the priest working in Peru, arrived late and made his appearance in the Saturday morning session.   He brought with him a cream cake from Peru.  He cut it up and passed it around to everyone.
