Ephesians  2, 4-10,   God brought us to life with Christ.

 John  3,  14-21,   Jesus & Nicodemus.

INTRODUCTION to Gospel:

 When our gospel begins, Jesus is in dialog with Nicodemus, who is present three times in the John gospel. He is a Pharisee and teacher who wants to know what Jesus is teaching and doing. Today’s reading occurs at night for he is afraid that other Pharisees might think that he had become a disciple of Jesus.

 Later Nicodemus will remind the Pharisees who want to rid themselves of Jesus that the Law does not allow them to arrest Jesus without first knowing what he is saying and doing. 

After the crucifixion, Nicodemus, while it is still day, brings to Jesus’ disciples an unheard of amount of expensive spices so that Jesus’ body can be given a kingly burial.   Initial fear had turned into great love.

GOSPEL and HOMILY: 

A year or two ago I also gave a homily on this fourth Sunday of Lent; but then I chose the other gospel reading about the man who had been blind from birth.  I took you in that homily to the Feast of Tabernacles where Jesus had called out in the temple inviting anyone who was thirsty to come to him and drink from the fountain of living waters. 

It was in these waters that the man born blind had been baptized.  I also made you aware of the verse from the prophet Jeremiah, ‘Those who reject the Lord, the fountain of living waters, will in shame have their names written in the earth.’

The Pharisees sought to circumvent Nicodemus’ words to them about the Law, by trying to trap Jesus using the Law, by bringing to him a woman caught in the act of adultery.  ‘Moses said that this woman should be stoned. What do you say?’ 

They knew that Jesus would not allow them to stone her; he would seek to bring forgiveness to the woman.  They had him trapped; but Jesus bent down and began writing the names of these Pharisees and scribes on the ground to inform them that they were the ones in need of forgiveness.

When they kept after him to take a position he said, ‘The one of you, who is without sin, cast the first stone at her.’  One by one they left until there was no one left in front of him but the woman who recognizes his great love.

She made no excuse; she does not try to run away from what she has done, she submits herself to his words. He says to her, ‘woman, where are they, is there no one left to condemn you?’ 

 

 

Harper

Harper says, "My grandmother wears green because it is St. Patrick's color."

 

He has addressed and treated her with goodness and justice, tenderness and compassion.  She replies, ‘No one.’  Since Jesus has already said in today’s gospel that he came not to condemn but to bring forgiveness to the world, he truly has forgiven her.  He says, ‘neither do I condemn you. Go, and sin no more.’ 

The Greek word, translated as ‘go,’ means in Greek, ‘to journey along the way she has been invited to pursue.’  She has been invited by Jesus to follow him.  Jesus’ command to the woman, ‘do not sin again,’ recognizes, again, that she is forgiven, and is an ongoing request to remain contrite.

At the end of our Eucharistic Prayer we will join together in the Our Father before celebrating our Lenten Penitential service where we ask for forgiveness and grant forgiveness. It is appropriate for us at this time to take a moment to reflect on some habit we might have that is not life-giving or love-giving, and in a contrite way think about how we will replace it with something that is.

    Background on Samuel and Ephesians:

     

    The Old Testament, like the New Testament, is written in parable-like stories.  Very seldom does our liturgical calendar present to us a complete story.  The intention of our OT reading today is to make us aware that the words and deeds of the Messiah would fulfill the words and deeds of King David.  So, I’ve chosen for you from the OT a very short but complete story about King David’s words and deeds.

    Mike giving us the background on 2 Samuel.

     

    A few  words on David: he was the youngest of the eight sons of Jesse, yet God directed the prophet Samuel to anoint him as the king of Israel to replace a conceited and jealous King Saul.  Almost immediately David accepts the challenge given by the giant Philistine soldier Goliath for an Israelite soldier to face him in man-to-man combat—winner take all.  With a sling in his hand David embedded a stone in the forehead of the Philistine.  King Saul begins to fear David’s popularity; but Jonathan, the king’s oldest son, makes a sacred covenant with David to protect one another that extends to their descendants. Our OT reading happened 10 or 12 years later.   

    In Ephesus, Paul reminds the Jews who have become Christians that God is rich in mercy.  God has brought them life through the words and deeds of Jesus Christ. It is by grace that they have been saved.

    Homily:

    The dilemma in the parable of the first reading is that the crippled son of Jonathan in fear and shame has ended up in Lo Debar, a spiritual slum.  He is a forgotten person with seemingly no way out and no place to go.  The wisdom of the this parable is that Jonathan’s son responds to the goodness and kindness that flows forth from the covenant Jonathan had made with David, ‘He now eats at the table of King David, like one of the king’s sons.’  The parable ends by telling us that being crippled in both feet no longer brings shame to him; but rather it is now how and why Jonathan’s son was able to accept the wisdom of the parable.  King David gave him a way out of Lo Debar, and a place to go to be refreshed.

    In today’s Gospel reading, Christ is the Good Shepherd; all who come to him to receive his Spirit filled words are spiritually healed, for he has made a covenant with God to last for all eternity. A forgiven humanity are always invited to eat at the Lord’s table.  Christ fulfills King David’s words and actions! He has embraced us with the Holy Spirit so that we can be Christ to others.   

    So, take the opportunity to welcome this coming week someone who is lonely, or forgotten; someone who is spiritually crippled or afraid, for ‘the Spirit of the Lord is upon you to take the good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to the captives, to give sight to the blind, to set the downtrodden free, to proclaim this year as the Lord’s year of favor.’

    Reggie coming to us from Soul's Harbor with his touching story of going from a full OU football scholarship to the dumpsters and back again through Soul's Harbor.

     

    Today we had the pleasure of hearing the personal story of Reggie, a resident at Soul's Harbor.

    Reggie went to OU on a football scholarship, left OU, and hit the bottom with drugs, even to eating from dumpsters and sleeping in port-o-potties in the winter.  He said that he cannot go around Olive Garden resaurants today because he used to survive on the food in their dumpsters.

    With Soul's Harbor he has gotten his life back and become Brent's right hand man at the residence.

    A second Christmas Homily

    This morning I have another Christmas story.

    For many years I have had a really good friend who is an Ursuline nun.   Just thinking about Sr. Mary gives me fond memories of celebrating the early morning community Mass in the sisters' quiet chapel in the residence.

    It also reminds me that I have a rare special relationship with the Ursulines.  I went to Christ the King grade school when the Ursulines staffed it.   I am educated by the Ursulines. 

    Today there are no sisters living in the old convent with the beautiful little chapel.  Sr. Mary says she now lives along with 5 or 6 other Ursuline sisters at a retirement home that was popularly known at Tremont.  It is located on Harvest Hill Drive just across the Dallas Tollway from Jesuit and St. Rita's' Catholic Church.

    I know it well because my mom lived there and died there.  She passed through all the 3 levels, individual apartment, partial care, and full care.  

    There is sister who still works at Ursuline Academy, you guessed it, Sr. Mary.  Every morning she gets up, spends the day at her school office.  Then drives back to Tremont.

    Last summer she decided it was time for her to give up driving and sell her little car.  A difficult decision.  She would use Huber.  

    One morning around Labor Day she could not get Huber. So she decided to use the app. Lyft.   A guy came, picked her up at Tremont and took her to Ursuline.  During the trip she probably explained to the driver what she did at the school.

    She exits his car, asks how much, and is told "No Charge."  She explains that she will still need a ride home in the afternoon.  Plus, she will make the trip every weekday.

    Acts, a quick review–

    Luke wrote this and his gospel, around 65, covering the time after the resurrection and onto Rome.

    Our selection describes Peter's imaginative escape from jail.

     

    John: I want to use the gospel passage from the Vigil Mass, the story about Jesus asking Peter, "Do you love me?"  Watch how this story can be unpacked from something fairly simple to something  with more finesse.

    Do you love me?

    I want to talk this morning about the little dialogue between Jesus and Peter.  It looks pretty simple and straight forward.  Jesus says, “Do you love me?”  Peter responds, “You know I love you.” 

    You have probably heard the simple explication that it is a triple statement of love after a triple denial.  It ain’t so simple.  You may have heard me talk about this in the past, but it bears repeating. 

    By way of an introduction, let me tell a little story.

    Last Monday I am at the “J” for the 6:00 A.M. spin class, the Jewish Community Center near our house.  There are about 20 people there, all ages, males and females, some in pretty good shape, some not.  The instructor or coach or whatever he is, is a tall slender, in shape black guy.  He knows everybody’s name, calls you out during the class, like, “Come on, John, you can do better than that,” when I am already putting out so much I am about to faint. 

    Most of all he has the mouth, the language.  He’s beautiful.  He says a lot of crazy things to get us going, and if I was not going so flat out, I could enjoy him even more.  So, I love to tease him.  He asks everyone how they’re doing 5 minutes before the end of the session and after all the others have said they are doing great, I say I am dying and I say I know that makes him happy.

    So after dying in Monday’s class and while I am cleaning up the stationary bike, I say to him, “Hey, Ben, if you really love me like you profess (he’s never told me he loves me, rather the contrary), in three weeks you would come with me to ride across Iowa in the Ragbrai bike tour.”

    You can imagine what he says.  He does not deny that he loves me.  But he says that he is not the stud biker like I am.   Pretty slippery.  Of course, I make some smart response like, “So much for your love for me.”

    This story exemplifies a bit how the dialogue between Jesus and Peter can be seen.

    There is play on the word love here that is totally lost in the English.  Two Greek words are used for love, agapo and phileo.  Let’s say that agapo means love, but phileo means, say, care for.  Watch what happens with the 3 back and forths.

    The first time, Jesus says, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these others do?”, he uses agapo, do you love me?  

    Peter responds, “You know that I love you.”  Guess what.  He uses the word phileo.  I care for you.  Does that not make a significant difference?

    The second time, Jesus only says, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?”  Again he uses agapo.

     

    Offertory

    Peter responds exactly the same, “You know that I love you.”  Guess which word he uses.  Phileo.  I care for you.

    Third time, Jesus says, “Simon, son of John, do you care for me?”  Jesus switches word.  This time he uses phileo, care for.   

    Peter responds, “Lord, you know everything.  You know that I care for you.”

    So what is the author John trying to convey by crafting this little vignette?  Who knows really?  Apparently Peter has become a more humble, less braggadocio person.  Look at where it begins with Jesus asking about loving more than the others.  What would the old Peter have said?  And look at where it ends, Jesus lowering his expectations and Peter sticking to his first statement.  Beyond that, who can say? 

    Question this week: how do you deal with the mystery that is this bible?

    Kings:  a review–

    Subject: The kings of Israel.  The Big 3 kings were Saul, David, & his son Solomon.  The 2 Books of kings follows the 2 Books of Samuel, which describe the lives of the the kings up to the death of the Great King David, my favorite.  1 & 2 Kings takes up the life of Solomon, David's son, his building of the temple, his death, and the fate of the kingdom following his death, that is, it divides and is conquered. 

    Time Period:  from ca. 900 – 555 before Christ, or from Solomon to Nebuchadnezzar & Cyrus.

    Authors: a compilation of many sources that was put together at the end of the Babylonian Captivity, ca. 555 before Christ. 

    Our Selection: focus is on one man, the prophet Elijah.  The kingdom has already been split.  Our story takes place in the northern state, Israel.  Time of severe drought.  The king is Ahab; his queen, the famous Jezebel.  The prophet Elijah has scolded them for turning to false gods to end the drought.  

     

    Cole

    Cole & Angela holding hands during the Our Father.  Cole says to his mom, "Mom, she needs me to hold her hand…She doesn't have anyone."  Wow, Cole, you are The Best.

     

    There has been a contest in chapter 18: Elijah vs the 450 prophets of Baal, ultimately to see which side would be more effective in bringing rain.  2 bulls were slaughtered.  Naturally, Elijah wins when Yahweh answers his prayer, sends down fire, and consumes the bull Elijah has slaughtered.  When he wins, he slaughters the 450 prophets of Baal.   

    We enter at a point where Jezebel is furious with Elijah for killing her favorite prophets and aims to kill Elijah.  He is going to run away all depressed.   

    We will read an expanded chapter 19, from 1-13.

    Kind, Compassionate, and Forgiving

    I would like to talk about what Ephesians brings up, being kind, compassionate, and forgiving.  It happened to me.

    Folks, I unexpectedly had another one of those special weeks.  Not on the Kilimanjaro level of my Ragbrai week, but still special.

    I don’t know if you saw in the news that this past week the Jewish Community Center was hosting the Maccabi games.  There are two or three places where these games take place every summer for Jewish kids from, say, 12 to 16.  Kids come from all over the world.  Some games are even scheduled in Europe and Israel.

    Dallas hosts the games every 5 or so years and it is big.  9 venues are involved where the events take place.  Kids came from Australia and Israel, to name only two that I saw, plus from cities all over the States.  26 programs were involved with over a thousand kids playing soccer, basketball, volleyball, and even ping pong, to name just some . 

    How did I get mixed up in the show?  You know I do spin classes at the Jewish Community Center every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings at 6:00.  Two of the women in the class whom I like a lot are part of the organizing team.  They were looking for volunteers among even non-Jewish people, not to host the kids, but to volunteer.  So I volunteered. 

     

      Paul

    Would you trust this man to give Carrie her birthday                       cupcake?   Mr. Paul  has been known… 

     

    The first thing I noticed when I came on board was that, despite the fact that there was a tsunami of kids at the J, which was ground zero, that same spirit of trust was there that I noticed in Iowa.  Backpacks were lying around all over, inside a lot, but outside everywhere.  I was again moved by this trust atmosphere.

    Secondly, I noticed the security.  My car had to be tagged, I had to be tagged, photo ID at all times.  Guess why.  Remember the Munich games?  These kids are potentially a target.  About that, I am sad.  These kids were beautiful and charming.  And there are people who would be happy to kill them.  I am reminded of the Holocaust and I always have a hard time getting my mind around that.

    A Cupcake for you on your Birthday, Marlene.

     

     

    My role in the event?  I was involved Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, mostly in being a score keeper and line judge in girls’ volley ball and in being a timer in swimming.  I was at the Sportsplex on Alpha Road behind the old Valley View center.  This was where I met kindness, compassion, and forgiveness.

    I met it because I messed up the score at least 5 games out of the 10 or so I scored and even flubbed being a line judge.  At least three times the volleyball games had to be stopped so the score could be made right.  For me it was not so simple because the scoring is different today.   Plus I would get emotional and cheer a spike or some wicked serve and forget to flip the score. 

     

      The Team

    The Team.  No white alb this morning.  The alb got left at the wedding venue the night before.

     

     

    And you think being a line judge is simple.  No way.  It goes against all my Jesuit training and psychological formation.  My training was don’t judge the book by the cover, no black or white, no right or wrong.  So I had to think about what I saw.  On the one had, this shot could be in.  On the other, maybe it was out.

    One time I even judged a ball out, which favored the team I was closer to.  The main line judge, however, over ruled me and then the girls on the team said to him, “But he said it was out!” 

    Despite all my dufus mistakes, all these people were kind, compassionate, and forgiving.

    Moreover, I even fell in love with the Dallas girls’ volleyball team.  I had watched them so much.  Trouble was, they lost the final.  I could not stay to watch after they had lost the first 2 out of 5 to L.A..

      What a good writer the author of Luke-Acts is. The story of the two followers of Jesus on the road to Emmaus has the power to grab us and make us feel like we were there with them.  We know about those who experience closeness with their loved ones after the loved ones have passed on. We’ve heard about people who talk with and have conversations with loved ones who are gone, or who see them in their dreams or even see them just walk in the door.

      Could there be anything more fun to play with than a spider on the floor?
       
       
      These stories are not about miracles; they are about how humans try to be connected with loved ones who are no longer  here, and how we process a significant loss.
       
      I can’t tell you how many people have shared with me their experiencing a loved one’s presence after they had passed on. Is that a miracle? Or is life and connection itself the miracle?

      You heard Mike a few weeks ago talk about the miracle stories in the Bible being a way of talking about people who are heroes, or who are thought of as grand or powerful or loving.
       
      The story that the two guys on the road to Emmaus experienced Jesus as joining them is not a stretch—this is a human story. The story of Jesus is the story of a man from Nazareth who, following John the Baptist, discovered that he too had a message, a message that we are not disconnected; nor are we cut off from God, ever; that we are living in God’s kingdom, if only we open our eyes and ears and follow the Good News he taught.
