I would like to talk about the line from Wisdom that struck me, It’s’ hard to make sense of what is going on in the world & harder still to understand what happening right under our noses.

My problem is that I do understand. Consequently, I can get down and I tell Rosemary, ”Let’s don’t talk about that stuff.” Now, seeing that Rosemary & I will be out of the country the next two weeks of September, I want to focus on activities and events that console me, challenge me, and make me proud to be an American. I got five quickies.

Our candle lighting team of the week, Zoe, Tori, and their friend Zoe.

First, anybody know where the Dallas Baptist Men are this morning? Try Florida and N. Carolina, according to the announcement I heard while Dorian was still in the Bahamas. So, before hitting the U.S. they already had packed up their pick ups, their shower 18 wheeler, their mobile kitchen, and tons of food.

I worked along side these guys in Galveston and, in fact, shared a large rectangular dormitory with about 25 guys, one of which snored like a chain saw.

Rosemary sez to Cindy, "Now while I am gone you have this short list of 16 things to do for the community."

The group I was with in Galveston was, as you can guess, Bona Responds, the group of St. Bonaventure students with their incredible professor, Jim Mahar, plus his henchman, our own Pagosa Bill Hammond. Guess from whom I got a message about taking a group to the Bahamas.

Closer at hand, how about Meals on Wheels? I am so proud of Rosemary and Barbara, her buddy, when they head out together to bring food to about 12-18 people. You might think this is a local endeavor only. Come with us on Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day when a mob of regular volunteers pick up their food at the central headquarters near Love Field.

The BEST, John & Connie who can now see the world, thanks to the cataract removals.

On 60 Minutes a week or so I heard about a wealthy alumnus of NYU (Rosemary's Alma Mater) who gathered & donated enough money to set up a trust to enable all students in the medical school study loan free. I was in tears when it showed the assembled students getting the notice.

Finally, a favorite of our community, the Love for Kids picnic in the Fall and the one in the Spring. We ride in under the flag of Bona Responds and Pagosa Bill suits us all up in special T shirts. Who ever came up with this plan? It is fabulous and most touching.

Come on, Ben, I'm jealous & want a Zeke Elliott do like you got.

These are five reasons I am honored and proud to be here in Plano with you people, to be in Texas, and to be in the U.S.

Homily:

A story that touched me a few weeks ago, following the mass shooting in El Paso, was the story of Antonio Basco. His companion of many years was killed in that attack. Neither of them having family in the area, he was feeling really alone in planning the funeral.

Antonio invited the anybody who could to join him at the visitation and remembrance, thinking maybe a few well-wishers in El Paso would join him. What happened?

Our super candle lighting team in action.

Thousands showed up—yes, thousands!—and some came from hundreds of miles away. People heard the story. In their mercy they saw the pain of Antonio’s personal tragedy: he was surviving the loss of his long-time companion.

Their hearts went out to him, and they showed up to be with him in his loss and grief. Many others, who heard of the story, also felt mercy for his suffering and were with him in Spirit, in their hearts.

Watch out, Luke, you will get put to work bringing up our gifts.

From today’s readings, Mount Sinai is where Moses received the law from God – the ten “thou shalt not’s” for a people with a short memory. Those words and warnings scared me as a young person hearing them in catechism class and the special preparation for First Communion and First Confession—the stakes went up for us kids with the pressure of the exaggerated importance of those really big events—1^st communion, 1^st confession. (We definitely didn’t get M & M’s for our penance in First Confession.)

Rather than the ‘thou shalt not’s’ from Moses on Mount Sinai, it’s ‘Love one another as I have loved you,’ from Jesus. Jesus spoke Good News—that we were never separated from God by Adam’s sinfulness or our own.

God is always with us, all of us. We always have access to God’s Spirit, all of us. The Spirit of God is within us, and is present in all our relationships, all of us. In his words, and in how he lived his life, Jesus brought the Good News.

Luke 13, 22-30,  Many will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough.

Isaiah 66 observations:

Author: Isaiah III. The book of Isaiah is one of my favorites, as you have heard me say often enough. Some beautiful passages. Remember, 3 primary authors are responsible for the 66 chapters, and we are reading the very last.

This book is one of the Big 3 O.T. prophets, along with Jeremiah and Ezekiel. Why? because the works are the longest. There are 12 minor prophets.

Trouble in the bleachers with Richard & Mike.

Time of composition: ca. 555 to 777,   The Assyrians annihilated the northern Jewish provence or kingdom, called Israel, vs the southern kingdom called Judah, where Jerusalem is. 10 tribes were lost in this destruction, the 10 Lost Tribes of Israel.

Remember, there were 12 tribes. Why? Because of the 12 sons of Jacob, who was one of the 3 great patriarchs or founders of the tribe, Abraham, Isaac, & Jacob, who was also called Israel.

Message of Isaiah III: Mostly consolation after the catastrophic mess of Jerusalem that greeted the Jews on their return from Babylon.

Do I have a deal for you on a almost mint condition red Studebaker.

What is the activity of a prophet? 1. criticism, 2. prediction of dire consequences, 3. consolation.

Today’s specific message: this being the last chapter of the whole work, you might guess. Yes, consolation.

Psalm 117: The best line in the whole bunch of readings. Go out to all the world and tell the Good News.

Hebrews observation:

The best thing about today's selection: we have to read Hebrews only one more week. Awful reading today.

Go Out to All the World and tell the Good News

You all know well that I love to celebrate birthdays, like we do here at our Sunday celebrations. I have carried this over to the 6:00 A.M. spin classes at the J.

Consequently, I am often asking people when is their birthday. Then at the end of our session I get up front and tell everybody that this person is celebrating a birthday, and give them a BelVita cookie package. I used to try to sing, but gave it up because singing is not my gift.

With only her first cataract removed, Connie can see!

There is a lady named Haya. I don’t know her last name.. I only know that I am touched and humbled by her. She is probably 5’1”, and has a scar on the back of her right shoulder. She and I are the same age part of every year.

Because I am intrigued and humbled by the background & history of these Jewish people, I often ask a person how their family was effected by the Holocaust.   With Haya having the same age as I have, I was especially curious to know what she was doing while I was growing up in University Park. So I asked.

Who are those two characters messing with Ben?

Turns out that Haya and her family lived in a small town in Poland. Her father and his two brothers had a small business. When the Germans took over Poland in late ’39, Haya’s dad took the family and ran to Marseilles. The brothers decided to ride it out.

As things got worse Haya’s dad took the family to the Holy Land even before the Jewish State’s establishment. Finally the family migrated to New York City and somehow got settled there despite some anti-imigration sentiment in the government. Haya, therefore, grew up in NY City. Now days Haya seems to be in a good place. I think she has a son and a daughter and maybe her husband is deceased. Whatever, Haya has a house in the Glen Lakes gated community on Walnut Hill and Central, a condo in Manhattan, and a condo in Tel Aviv. She seems to bounce around all three locations. So on her birthday, which is August 25, I announced to the class and gave her a BelVita.

On her way out she whispered to me, “You made this the happiest day of my life.”   I was stunned and touched.

I cannot believe what I just heard. On the one hand, I am touched that such a small gesture can mean so much to her. On the other, does this say something about her life? What has she seen in life that I have never seen?

Why talk about her this morning? Two reasons.   Because she is Good News. The Psalm says, “Go out and tell the Good News.” People are The Good News.   I want to know her story.

Secondly, I want also to contextualize the negativity of Hebrews and Luke.

Elevation time.

There was a strong belief in these times that God was definitely a conditional love God. Why did the Babylonian Captivity take place? The Israelites were bad. Jeremiah says it, the Isaiahs say it. And so it was written. In fact, according to a minister here in Dallas, God punished the people in N.O. for their badness. Remember Katrina?

Pretty much this opinion of God has been discarded. Is sickness a penance for a sinful, bad life? Is this why I got Parkinson?

Me? I believe and I propose that people are The Good News, that you are The Good News. God takes Delight in you

And you? A God who scourges and demands penance or a God who proclaims that people are The Good News?
