THE CUPCAKE!!   Here I thought I would get to raz John & Connie for eating the cupcake I entrusted to them to take on the plane to visit Bill Hammond in Pagosa Springs. I knew they would waste no time in eating it. Wrong. I got snookered!

The Good Samaritan

This morning I would like to talk about two subjects, being a good Samaritan and and an old Red Sox fan who thought he was going to hell.

When Rosemary & I return to Northwood Park from riding the White Rock Creek trail, we get on west bound Royal Lane and usually catch the red light at Central. Almost always, summer or winter, at the base of the light is a guy & sometimes a woman, frequently young, holding a sign asking for help. I find this uncomfortable, especially is they come over to my window, me in air conditioned comfort.

They are home, Folks, Buddy, Tori, Zoe, and Georgie. It is so much more fun when you all are here.

The problem is that I know they can get aid, food, and shelter at numerous places in downtown Dallas, especially like The Bridge. In the company of a girl from Hockaday, a next door neighbor I have served dinner at the Bridge numerous times.   And you know what I am told often? Don’t give handouts to those begging at stop lights. I know, the word is that some don’t like sleeping in dormitories.

So how do I handle m discomfort? First, I can help at The Bridge and I was donating platelets at Carter Blood once a month until I got rejected for low iron. But equally important for me is the support I give and our community gives to the Food Pantry and, the best of all, Souls Harbor. Brent & his team are doing it, not just with food and shelter, but also with guidance, education, and AA programs. Souls Harbor is a harbor for me & my guilt.

The summer of 69 or 70 I spent 3 months working as an intern priest chaplain. I loved it. One afternoon I walked into a room of a Red Sox fan. Despite that he was a really good guy,probably younger than I am now, like in his early 70”s. He had the Boston lingo. And I teased him about it.

After a visit or two the old guy let me know that he knew he was dying, it was coming fairly soon, and he was okay about it. Kids? None. Wife? Yep. Still alive? Nope. Next, I do not know how it happened. Maybe I said, “Well you will see your wife pretty soon.”   His response was that he was going to hell.

What?? I almost croaked.

Says Sir Charlie, "John, see this note? It is a special message, John, from the Pope to you.

Turns out he married once when he was like 19. It lasted a while, then they separated. A few years later he met his second wife and they had a happy 40 or more years together, until she died fairly recently.

You know what doubly blew me away. He was peaceful about his imagined fate. He loved his real wife.

Leo, you are growing up to be one great Kid.

Well, you know what I said to him. Even 30 or more years ago I knew that there was no hell. It was a concept created by the Jewish elders to keep the troops in line. And we inherited it.

Can you believe it? There is no hell, no conditional love.

Isaiah observations:

The scene: the people are now back in Jerusalem, a destroyed Jerusalem. Isaiah is attempting to put a positive spin on everything. After all that took place in the Babylonian captivity, Cyrus has defeated the Babylonians and released the Jewish people to return to Jerusalem.

This chapter 66 is the last of the whole book and the work of the third Isaiah.

The Psalm. Can this be true? The Psalm is also 66. It is beautiful and positive. Can religion be better?

Why I am still proud to be an American

This morning in honor of July 4, I want to share why I am still proud to be an American. I have 4 little vignettes.

The first took place when I was in Tanzania giving a retreat or seminar to a small group of delightful Dutch religious sisters. We were at a mission on the outskirts of a little town called Morogoro. A thief got into my room, which was a fixed up shipping container on the edge of the compound, while I was having breakfast. I lost my passport & a few small things.

Who let in that funny man with the hat?

So, I had to go to the American Embassy in Dar es Salaam, the capitol. The staff did not hassle me, but treated me like a fellow traveler. I remember feeling, first, a sense of security and, secondly, a sense of being proud to be connected with a country which was a dream country to so many Tanzanians.

Secondly, Iowa and the marvelous week long 500 mile bike ride the end of this month. 30k people riding from the MO River to the MS River. The atmosphere is so friendly and fun.

Amid all the camaraderie, the event that always touches me the most is the Amish concession. Not just because I can buy a piece of pie (about 5 varieties) for 3-4 $$’s and a huge spoonful of vanilla ice cream being made right there under the tent for another 2-4 $$’s, It is the fact that in America a group like the Amish can live and thrive.

My Dearest Carrie, I remember you as a sweet, pretty little girl from our days at St. Marks. Now look at you, a pretty girl and a doctor. I'm impressed and delighted for you.

I will miss seeing my buddy Henry, the pie vendor, a guy about 24 years old and very friendly. I will miss renewing our friendship. He even loaned me the money once when I forgot my money.

I ride Iowa’s Ragbrai, I am proud to be a crazy American like all the crazies around me.

Aggie, this is fortification for the rework of your knee. May it be successful and bring you peace.

Thirdly, our neighborhood picnic and parade. So many kids, so many families, so many dogs, so many families of color. Rosemary is the refreshment czar and hosts the most popular concession on the campus of the Preston Hollow Elementary, where the disk jockey rides, where the fire truck begins the parade, and where face painting and animal petting all can be found.

Want to know how popular Rosemary is?   I was instructed to pick up 24 dozen donut holes to go with chocolate chip cookies from Costco and grapes in plastic cups.   How many donut holes left over? Zip, zero, nada.

A dozen times during the morning I am touched to be there. I am proud to be part of America and I am proud of Rosemary.

Listen everyone. Connie & John are going to visit Bill in Pagosa Springs. Therefore, what a better way to show Bill our appreciation for his hospitality for Rosemary & me. Enjoy it, Bill.

Finally, remember the Mays when Rosemary & I would join her delightful family to do the Ride New York? While there we would take the marvelous Staten Island Ferry (still FREE!), and pass by the Statue of Liberty, a gift from the French.

On that statue is the following sonnet:

Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teaming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest tossed to me.

I lift my lamp beside the Golden Door.

It takes a team. Especially because we are color coordinated.

John Cade's Homily:

    Our readings today offer visuals of how difficult it can be to fully accept a call from the Spirit within. In the book of Kings we have the little drama between Elijah and Elisha and how Elisha held back at first saying, “Let me kiss my mother and father goodbye, then I’ll follow you.” In this case, Elisha, after being rebuked by him, answered the call of Elijah.

    In Luke’s story the people in a Samaritan village wouldn’t follow Jesus or even let him stay in their town; he was, after all, a Jew. Luke continues his story by giving examples of three different people who responded to the call to follow Jesus by either not giving an answer at all, or by asking for time to bury a parent or to say goodbye to his family.

    My mind and heart are still with Carol and her passing last week. At her memorial we heard testimony to the many ways she followed the Spirit within, calling her. I’m not saying Carol was perfect. Is anybody? I’m saying she was an inspiration to me and to this community. Carol gave permission to her therapist, Jill Grant, to speak at the Memorial. Jill said how at first she couldn’t write anything about Carol but words that spilled out when she thought of Carol. Words like: Kind. Energy. Lovable. Fighter. Tolerant. Leader. Beautiful. Energizer Bunny. Playful. Student. Teacher. Intelligent. Brave. Enthusiasm. Loving. Innocent. Fighter. Friend. Courageous. Beloved. Daughter. Sister. Wife. Mother. Grandmother. Inspiration.

Something I didn’t know about Carol was that, at the age of 7, she was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis, which meant muscle weakness and chronic fatigue, to the point that from 2^nd to 9^th grade she attended classes half days and homeschooled in her High School years. In spite of this Carol not only completed her High School GED, but completed college and was awarded a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology. She again showed herself to be a fighter over the past few years. In spite of fatigue and pain Carol seemed to know more than normal about how to maintain her balance, and her enthusiasm for life as it came to her. To me, a major inspiration.

   You too, Rich, have been on my mind and heart for some time. One thing I have been inspired by was your constancy and your trust in this community. When you and Carol attended together you were clearly here together. When Carol became too fatigued to come with you, there you were. You did not seem to really be alone; I could see Carol’s Spirit with you, as I still do. I want you to know that your constancy and your trust in this community has been an inspiration to me and all here.

My question for us: How do we follow the call of the Spirit within, how do we live our life as it comes to us?
