  • Sunday Homily 10-10-10, 28th Ordinary Time

     Readings: 2 Kings 5, 14-17; Psalm 98, The Lord has revealed to The Nations His Saving Power; 2 Timothy 2, 8-13; Luke 17, 11-19. 

                                                      

    Twenty eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time- Intro to the readings.

     

    Our first reading today is from the second book of Kings, and was written about the year 560BCE.  The Book of Kings was written at a time of great crisis.  In 587 the Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzer and his armies had attacked the southern kingdom, Judah, and destroyed the Temple in Jerusalem, and taken the Jewish people back to Babylon as slaves. 

     

     The big question for the Jews was “where was their God in all of this?"  What about the promises he had made on Mount Sinai?  The 400 year rule of the Davidic line of kings has come to an end.  The purpose of the writer is to tell the people that it is not God who has been unfaithful, but the people.  He  encourages them to see that God is still faithful to his people. 

     

    Our short story in today’s reading fits with the gospel in that someone saw that the gospel was about lepers and so find something about lepers in the Old Testament!  Recall that in those days most gods were seen as local, and so we find Naaman, who is a high ranking general from Damascus, where Paul was heading when he had his vision, asking Elisha if he can take two mule loads of the earth back with him.  He has been cured by Elisha’s god and wants that god to be with him when he returns home.  To get the full impact of this reading I want to read to you the piece which leads up to our reading today:

     

    Naaman, the army commander of the king of Aram, was highly esteemed and respected by his master, for through him the LORD had brought victory to Aram. But valiant as he was, the man was a leper.  Now the Arameans had captured from the land of Israel in a raid a little girl, who became the servant of Naaman's wife.  "If only my master would present himself to the prophet in Samaria," she said to her mistress, "he would cure him of his leprosy." 

     

     Naaman went and told his lord just what the slave girl from the land of Israel had said.  "Go," said the king of Aram. "I will send along a letter to the king of Israel." So Naaman set out, taking along ten silver talents, six thousand gold pieces, and ten festal garments.  To the king of Israel he brought the letter, which read: "With this letter I am sending my servant Naaman to you, that you may cure him of his leprosy." 

     

     When he read the letter, the king of Israel tore his garments and exclaimed: "Am I a god with power over life and death, that this man should send someone to me to be cured of leprosy? Take note! You can see he is only looking for a quarrel with me!"  When Elisha, the man of God, heard that the king of Israel had torn his garments, he sent word to the king: "Why have you torn your garments? Let him come to me and find out that there is a prophet in Israel."  Naaman came with his horses and chariots and stopped at the door of Elisha's house.  The prophet sent him the message: "Go and wash seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will heal, and you will be clean."

    But Naaman went away angry, saying, "I thought that he would surely come out and stand there to invoke the LORD his God, and would move his hand over the spot, and thus cure the leprosy.  Are not the rivers of Damascus, the Abana and the Pharpar, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them and be cleansed?" With this, he turned about in anger and left.

     

    But his servants came up and reasoned with him. "My father," they said, "if the prophet had told you to do something extraordinary, would you not have done it? All the more now, since he said to you, 'Wash and be clean,' should you do as he said."

     

      

     

    Twenty eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time – Homily

     

    On the surface today’s gospel message seems simple enough, don’t forget to say, “Thank you”.  But because I have two weeks to reflect on the story, and also because a good friend of mine whom I was ordained with years ago told me about a great homily he had heard about the ten lepers, I had to pry deeper.  My friend now lives in England and after spending thirty minutes on the phone with him the other day, neither one of us could come up with what that original ‘great homily’ was all about!  I feel there is more to Luke’s account than a lesson in ‘good manners’.

     

    The story itself is classical Luke.  Jesus is still heading towards Jerusalem, although the geographic clues, which Luke gives at the beginning of the story, tell us that Luke doesn’t have a clue of the geography of the area!  Ten lepers meet with Jesus and are sent off to be inspected and declared free of their leprosy.  Only one comes back to say thanks. 

     

     There are several things we need to keep in mind.  The one who came back was a Samaritan.  Luke seems to have a thing for Samaritans; we have the “good Samaritan, the Samaritan woman at the well, and now the Samaritan leper.  What we can easily forget is that the Samaritan would not be going to Jerusalem to be declared “cured’ by the Temple priests, he would have gone to Mount Gerizim, that was their place of worship. 

     

     When the nine Jewish lepers would have been declared clean, there is explicit instructions for a thanksgiving offering clearly spelt out in Leviticus chapter 13: “30And he shall offer, of the turtle-doves or pigeons such as he can afford, 31one* for a sin-offering and the other for a burnt-offering, along with a grain-offering; and the priest shall make atonement before the Lord on behalf of the one being cleansed. 32This is the ritual for one who has a leprous* disease, who cannot afford the offerings for his cleansing.”

     

    What I would like to read into today’s story is the following.  The nine lepers who went to the temple in Jerusalem were doing exactly what the Law of Moses told them to do.  Of course they were thankful, and did what the Law prescribed.

     

    Whenever Jesus seems to run afoul of the Jewish leaders it is because they are trying to enforce the Law and he is ignoring it!  His laws are fairly simple, “Love God and Love your neighbor”.  Too often we have been raised to “follow the rules”.  As I have said recently, we have become slaves to the rules.  Vatican II has invited us to act responsibly and be accountable for our own actions.  Too often people need the security of “following the rules”.  I came across the following story from Margaret Silf in the current issue of the magazine “America”.

                                                                                                                         

     

    A bewildered traveler was once walking in a strange country. Feeling fearful, without map or compass, he came to the junction of three trails. There was no signpost to indicate where any of them might lead. As he sat on a rock, contemplating the problem, a young boy came by and wished him a bright “Good Morning!” The traveler replied, “And a very good morning to you, son. Can you help me, please? I’m not from these parts, and I’m lost. Where does that trail over there lead?” “Sorry, sir, I don’t know” said the boy.    “Well, what about that second trail there?”  “Sorry, sir,” replied the boy, “I don’t know.” By now the traveler was getting impatient. “O.K., where does this third trail go?”  “Sorry sir, I don’t know,” came the cheerful reply.  Now seriously frustrated, the traveler snapped back, “For goodness sake, boy, what do you know?”  “I know I’m not lost, sir,” came the confident rejoinder, as the boy went on his way. 

                                                                                                                                    

     

    It is that ability to be comfortable with not knowing, with being able to be your own person, make your own decisions after reflection that come to me as the point in the story today.  The Samaritan leper was not bound by the urgency to get to his priest to be declared clean, but decided to go back to Jesus to say thank you.  He would then still need to go the temple at Mount Gerizim.  It was his ability to act for himself and not be determined by the rules, which saved him.

                                                                                                                     

     

     

    St Ambrose, the third century theologian uses a very simple analogy which I think might have value for us today in the rather turbulent times we live in.  He says we need to look at the little fish in the big ocean and try to be like that.  The fish has learned to swim in calm waters and when the sea is raging.  Neither sea bothers the fish, it is happy in its environment.  Most of us would rather the sea be calm, but it isn’t right now, not on any front.  All the rules are being challenged, all our solid truths are being questioned and it feels like the traveler at the intersection of three roads. 

                                                                                                                       

    Remember the lovely story of the apostles in the boat during the stormy sea.  Why were you afraid, did you not know I am with you! 

    This is the message I get from today’s simple story.

    Sunday Homily 10-3-10, 27th Ordinary Time

     
    Readings
    : Habakkuk 1, 2-3, 2, 2-4;  Psalm 95, If today You hear His Voice, harden not Your Hearts; 2 Timothy 1, 6-8, 13-14; Luke 17, 5-10.

     

    Habakkuk (What a Name!), Observations:

    Author:  Habakkuk, one of the 12 minor prophets (small book, only 3 chapters.  Less known about Habakkuk than any other scripture writer.

    Date: Probably right before the great Babylonian Captivity, i.e., around 600. 

    Subject:  The Babylonians are coming.  Get ready for bad times, because you Jewish people have been bad.  Like all prophets, prophesy of doom and disaster for sin, followed by peace after purification by Yahweh.  There is an imaginary dialogue between Yahweh & Habakkuk.  We'll read all of chapter 1 & the first 4 verses of chapter 2 for a richer view of the writing.

    Different Paradigm: Gifted and Giving 

    I recently had the occasion to reacquaint myself with a bad old friend from my youth.  The friend is Stein’s Bakery. 

    Stein’s today is located at Preston & LBJ, southwest corner  When I was a kid it was located at Preston & Northwest Hwy., southwest corner, what is called now Preston Center.

    I had a Dallas Morning News paper route when I was in high school and covered three streets just north of Northwest Hwy, Deloache, Woodlawn, and Park Lane.  When I would finish throwing my papers about 4:30 ( I walked in those days ), I would stop in at Stein’s on my way back home to buy a small fried cherry pie.  They were terrific.

    During my recuperation this year, someone I will name, Cindy Cramer, brought me a new taste temptation from Stein’s, something called cinnamon crisps.  I could not resist.  

    So, I headed back to Stein’s for the first time in 50 years.  I am thinking this is a momentous event, my return to Stein’s.  I order my half dozen & explain to the sales girl I have returned for the first time in 50 years.  I expect maybe she will play a trumpet or Fanfare for the Common Man, at least give me the cinnamon crisps gratis as a welcome home gesture.

    You guessed it.  She was totally ho hum.  I was deflated.  Does she not know who I am, what a great guy I am, where I have been all these years?

    I am reminded of this event because I am intrigued by the notion in the reading that we, I, are all unprofitable servants, just doing what we have been commanded by the master.  This has not been my understanding.  Were we not taught that we are special in the eyes of the creator?

    I see a trap in considering myself simply as an unprofitable creature, in other words, fairly useless.  If I have such a low self image of myself, I will certainly not be excited about my life.  In fact, I probably could be pretty negative.  

    I would propose two thoughts:

     1.  Let me change the paradigm from master & servant to Gifted and Giving.  Servant & master is not what we are into.  This is not our language.  

    2.  Then, let me observe that we are both, both gifted and giving.  Not just gifted or giving.  Moreover, we are even more gifted when we are giving, not as unprofitable and useless creatures, but as also gifted.

  • Sunday Homily 9-26-10, 26th Ordinary Time

    Readings: Amos 61-7; Psalm 146, Praise the Lord My Soul; 1 Timothy 6, 11-16; Luke 16, 19-31. 

     

     

    Intro to Readings

     

     

    I want to talk about our first reading in a bit more detail than normal.  The Book of the Prophet Amos is extremely interesting in so many ways, yet we only have readings from it this year today and last Sunday, and on only one Sunday last year and none next year!! 

     

     

    The book falls into the grouping referred to as the minor prophets, not due to their importance but more to the length of the books.  There are twelve books in this grouping, contrasting with the major prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel.  The book was originally put together around the year 750 BCE and its main message is that the Northern Kingdom of Israel and the Southern Kingdom of Judah are in trouble because they have neglected the poor. 

     

     

    Both Kingdoms are doing very well.  Both kingdoms have had peace and stable rule, but only some of the people are very wealthy.  Most are very poor.  One interesting aspect of the book is that it introduces the concept that all of the nations, not just the Jews, are under YHWH’s jurisdiction, and all will suffer because they have not followed God’s laws. 

     

     

    Amos himself was a shepherd and his work is mainly a social commentary on the current injustices he sees in society.  He anticipates what we know will happen in 721, the invasion and destruction of the northern kingdom by the Assyrians.  Our reading today fits perfectly with the message in the gospel.

    Twenty sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time – Homily

     

    I remember when the church changed the words of the “I confess” and added “and what I have failed to do”.  It added a new level to my understanding of sin.  It used to be that I sinned by doing something and now I was being told that I could also sin by NOT doing something! 

    This is exactly what happens to the rich man in today’s gospel reading from Luke.  By all accounts he was a success- he did very well for himself by the world’s standards- he had very nice clothes and ate the finest foods every day!  There was only one problem – he didn’t do anything about the poor man parked outside his door.  Oh, he knew he was there, he even knew his nam.   He just failed to do anything about him.

     

    Communion 9-26-10

    The rich man saw himself as far superior to Lazarus.  Even in the afterlife he thought he could have Lazarus do his bidding.  He failed to see that all men are created equal and that we are all brothers and sisters in God’s eyes. 

    It is worth noting that even though the rich man appears to have everything, he doesn’t have a name, whereas we do know the poor man’s name, Lazarus.  To further highlight the difference between the rich man and Lazarus, Luke gives us the detail about the dogs, which were considered unclean animals, licking Lazarus’ sores.

    The story is aimed at the Pharisees, who thought of themselves as careful followers of the Law of Moses.  They were also wealthy.  Luke has two agendas running through the parable. 

    One is the danger we fall into when we think we are doing things according to the law.  As Catholics our tradition could very easily lead us to fall into a similar trap.  If we obey all the rules, get all the boxes checked; so to speak, then we will end up in heaven.  It has a tendency to create a kind of mechanical process to our faith!  Plus we run the risk of then deciding that anyone who doesn’t follow those rules just won’t make it.  This was the whole problem, which so many of the Jews had with the whole message of Jesus.  They were scandalized by his behavior.  He ate with tax collectors and sinners!!

    The second item on Luke’s agenda was the challenge of the resurrection!  The rich man thinks that if Lazarus would only reappear from the dead, then his brothers would change their behavior.  Belief in the resurrection isn’t as simple as seeing someone come back from the dead!

    The message for us today:  make sure we are not mechanically just following a formula in our lives, and what does the resurrection mean to me today?

  • Sunday Homily 9-19-10, 25th Ordinary Time

    Readings: Amos 8, 4-7; Psalm 113, Praise the Lord who lifts up the Poor; 1 Timothy 2, 1-8; Luke 16, 1-13

     

    Luke’s Gospel, 3 observations:

     

    1.  The Story.  The rich man and his steward.  The steward is  squandering the rich man’s property.  The rich man tells the steward that he is going to be fired after he prepares the accounts. 

     

     

    The steward figures he will make friends with the debtors by cutting their debts to the rich man.  He cuts bills as much as 50%. 

     

     

    The rich man, instead of berating the steward, praises him for his strategy.  

    2.  What is going on here?  Looks like the steward is stealing from the rich man.   In fact, he is cutting out his commission, not stealing anything.  The Jews reading this parable would know this immediately.  The steward made his living by charging a service fee. 

     

    3.  Any lessons here for us?

      a.  One of Luke’s favorite messages: Our God is merciful.  See the Prodigal Son & Good Samaritan.  The rich man praises the steward for being ingenious.

      b.  We are challenged to be equally ingenious.  Use our talents.

     

    Extra point: watch out for taking a hit from the sayings at the end, trustworthiness, dishonesty in little things, 2 masters.  There might be a trap here: either/or spirituality.

    We Need a Mediator to Ransom Us?

     

     

    Many of you know that this old geezer loves to dance.  In fact, it was through dancing that Rosemary & I met.  I was looking for the best dancer.

     

     

    For the past year or more I have not been able to dance because I could not swing my hips or swivel.  For the past month or at least since I finished the Hotter ‘N Hell Hundred, I have had it in mind that I would like to return to dancing, probably at some special event. 

     

     

    The event took place last weekend at the wedding we did in Ashville, NC, for a girl very dear to me.  It was Friday night.  We had finished the rehearsal and gone to a bar-b-que place for the dinner.

    We returned to the hotel and what they call The Great Hall, the big stone lobby.  Playing dance music was a 3 piece group and a lady singer.  I had thought the wedding reception would be the fitting place to make our dancing debut.  But suddenly that Great Hall, the presence of others from the wedding, and the mood of the place made it the moment. 

     

     

    We danced.  I could do it.  It was exhilarating.  Like getting back on a bicycle after a long lay off.  To top it off, the lady singing even complimented us by saying, “Good dancing.”  I was quite touched.

     

     

    I talk about this event because I want to tie it into a line in Timothy that says more or less, “There is one mediator who gave himself as ransom for all.”

     

     

    My Question: Do we need someone to ransom us?  Ransom us from what?  Did Emma need to be ransomed when we baptized her?  What about Chloe or Zoe or Georgie or Sam or Sean?

     

     

    Many of us have been trained to think that we come into this life stained, imperfect, in fact, sinful, not because of anything we did.  But because some distant ancestors, Adam & Eve, sinned and we all inherit it.  If the baby was not baptized and the sin removed, it would go to where?  Not

    hell, not heaven.  Limbo.

     

    Communion 9-19-10
     

     

    Folks, what if there is no limbo?  The Catholic Church now says it was just a concept, not a reality.  Go further.  What if we don’t need to be ransomed from anything?  What if there really is no original sin?  That when we see a little baby and think how good it is, our perception is 100% accurate. 

     

     

    Biblical scholars and students of the history of religion are now suggesting that, just like Limbo, original sin is a concept thought up to explain imperfect behavior.  If this is so, could it be that none of us is in need of some kind of ransom?

     

     

    That lady singer complimenting us on our dancing in The Great Hall was another glimpse into the goodness of people.  The wedding was overflowing with the goodness.  Parents, the marvelous couple, little kids, and even some old geezers.  No need for ransom there.

     

     

    And if we don’t need to be ransomed, where does that leave us?

    Readings:  Exodus 32, 7-14; Psalm 51, I will rise and go to My Father; 1 Timothy 1, 12-17; Luke 15, 1-32

     

    Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time – Intro to Readings

    Our first reading from the Book ofExodus is a wonderful piece of writing!  There are two sections to the reading; the first is God expressing his anger to Moses because the people have made an idol. 

    Mass Begins 9-12-10

     

    One very interesting human touch in the reading should be familiar to anyone who has had kids, when the kids have not been at their best.  The kids suddenly do not belong to one of the parents!  In our reading, the people are no longer “God’s people” but suddenly are Moses’ people!  The second section of the reading Moses turns the situation around convincing God not to destroy the people.

    The second reading comes from Paul’s First Letter to Timothy. 

    I suppose the first question that comes to mind is “who is Timothy”?  He has two letters from Paul!  Acts of the Apostles Chapter 16 tells us that Paul was in Lystra when he met with Timothy.  We are told who Timothy’s parents are and Paul took him with him on his missionary work, finally sending him to the community in Ephesus, and that is where Timothy was when our letter today was written to him, probably around the year 65 CE.  By this time Paul is in prison in Rome.  The reading ends with what we call a doxology, which is a short type of hymn, we have one when we pray the Eucharistic Prayer and the ending “Through him, with him etc.”  That is a doxology.  Paul simply tried to get the message that if he could be forgiven his sins, then anyone could!

    Homily

    The theme in each one of our readings today is the same “being lost and in need of God’s forgiveness, or being found”.  In our first reading from the Book of Exodus, recall that the people have been lead by Moses from slavery in Egypt and have wandered through the desert for many years.  Moses has gone up the mountain, Mount Sinai, to receive the 10 Commandments from God.  Meanwhile the people are tired of God and have built a golden calf to worship.  Needless to say, God is pretty upset.  They are about to get really lost, but Moses manages to talk God out of it!

    Psalm 51 is our responsorial psalm and is a great favorite of mine.  Like St Paul, you have to be a great sinner to really appreciate this psalm.  There is a great awareness on the part of the writer, sometimes ascribed to King David, of how sinful he is.  “Against you only have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight”

    In Paul’s letter to Timothy, Paul is telling him his own story as a way of encouraging Timothy and to all who feel lost.

    Our gospel reading from Luke gives us three stories about losses.  If you look closely at all three stories, there is another theme running through them, that of “rejoicing”  When a sheep gets lost, he simply lies down and will not get up even when the shepherd finds him, which is why the shepherd picks him up and carries him. 

    I think at times we too can fall into a similar pattern.  When we get lost we have a tendency to lie down and do nothing.  The readings today are a very loud reminder to us of God’s forgiveness.  Two thoughts to take away.  First, are we willing to accept God’s forgiveness and secondly are we able to bring that forgiveness to those around us who need to be picked up?

  • Sunday Homily 10-5-10, 23rd Ordinary Time

    Readings:  Wisdom 9, 13-18; Psalm 90, In every age, O Lord, You have been Our Refuge; Philemon 9-10, 12-17 (expand, 4-22); Luke 14, 24-33

     

    Philemon observations:

    Author: Paul in prison in Rome.

    Time: around 60 C.E.

    Mass Begins 9-5-10

     

    Actors:

    —Paul

    —Philemon, a leader of the Christian community in Colossae ( in Turkey today), maybe a slave owner

    —Onesimus, maybe a run away slave, maybe a brother to Philemon.  This letter was used for centuries by slave owners to justify slavery.  Right up to the Confederacy.

     

     

    What is going on:  Paul is writing to Philemon to request a warm welcome to Onesimus, who, as slave or brother, has apparently run off with money or goods of Philemon.  When Onesimus ran away, he met Paul and they became close, with Onesimus helping Paul while he is imprisoned.

     

     

    We’ll read verses 4-24 for a broader picture of the letter.

    Wisdom observation:  a book of counsel on behavior.  Basically, be good thrive, bad burn alive.  Not written by Solomon.

    Hate My Parents?  Renounce My Possessions?

     

     

    I would like to talk this morning about the Hotter 'N Hell Hundred bike ride in Wichita Falls last Saturday.

     

    Approximately every ten miles of the HHH there is a rest station.  You can get water, gator aide, pickle juice, pickles, bananas, watermelon, and other specialties.  The pickle juice & bananas are for potassium to prevent muscle cramps, which I have to fight.

     

     

    I stop at every rest station except the ten mile station.  Last Saturday I was at the 30 miles station, a favorite because the ladies there bake chocolate chip cookies.  Trouble is, I can only eat one.  Or I’ll throw up.

     

     

    I had made a resolution to lie down at each stop for a few minutes.  So I lie down in the grass near my bike.  Almost immediately another rider says to me, “You okay?”  I was perfectly okay I told him.  Thanks.

     

     

    This caring for one another really touches me and seems contagious throughout the event.  Other people have asked me how I’m doing (maybe they think the old geezer can’t make it) and I ask others.

    My buddy and mentor Hammond tells me another story of people helping people.  He goes by a girl with a flat tire.  He remembers her well because she was all in pink, pink jersey, pink pants & shoes, pink helmet & bike, long blond hair.  Bill said there were about 5 guys all helping her.  I asked him if shortly there was a sixth.

     

     

    Bill said he was telling Greg Moldovan the story at the next rest stop.  A guy near them in the crowd said, “Hey, I was one of those guys and we were only three.”

     

     

    I tell stories about caring for one another to broaden Luke's demanding  message today.  Hate my parents?  Maybe not so hard to do sometimes.  My brothers & sisters?  Renounce all my possessions?  Hey, I’ve done this, actually twice.  It ain’t the answer.  What is the healthy approach?

     

    The Gang 9-5-10

     

    Three observations.

    First, we have here the old Christian dynamic of infinite demand—coupled with infinite acceptance.  It is not meant literally, but symbolically.

     

    Secondly, this infinite demand can be healthy & useful.  What about healthy detachment for a greater good?  High school & college football practice is in full throttle right now.  When I played a bit of high school football, in order to get in shape we did all sorts of conditioning exercises. We did pushups so often I hated them for the rest of my life.

     

     

    To achieve a greater good I may have to detach from my parents & my possessions. 

     

    Thirdly, I have 4 examples of the caring-for-others-way being a greater good.

  • Sunday Homily 8-29-10, 22nd Ordinary Time

    Readings:  Sirach 3, 17-29; Psalm 68, God, in Your Goodness, You have made a Home for the Poor;  Hebrews 12, 18-24; Luke 14, 1-14

     

     

    Introduction to the Readings

     

     

     

    The first reading today is from the Book Sirach, which used to be better known as Ecclesiasticus.  It was written about the year 180 BCE by Jesus, son of Elcazar, son of Sira, and later translated by his grandson into Greek.

     

    Baptism 8-29-10

     

    Sirach was a highly respected scribe and teacher, a person who traveled quite a bit, may even have been a diplomat to foreign courts.  Later in his life he started a school in Jerusalem where he tried to pass on to the young people the great love he had of the Scriptures combined with what he had learned from his own experiences about life. 

     

     

     

    The book is part of the Wisdom literature and the reason for its older title, Ecclesiasticus is that in the past it was one of the most used and quoted books by the Church!   Our reading today fits well with the topic in the gospels, humility.

     

     

    Emma 8-29-10

     

    The second reading is from the Letter to the Hebrews.  The author is unknown, although for a long period of time it was assumed to be Paul.  But today most scholars agree that the style is too different and the Greek used is the best in the New Testament. 

     

     

     

    The overall message of the letter is one of encouragement to hang in and not get too complacent with the faith.  Probably written late in the first century, the main theme is the priesthood and sacrifice of Jesus.  This is the letter where we come across the many references to Jesus as the High Priest. 

     

     

     

    I sometimes wonder if this focus was due to the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem (ca. 70 C.E.) and the end of the priesthood as the Jewish people would have known it, and so to fill the void the author holds up Jesus and his sacrifice as the one true sacrifice. 

     

     

     

    Another important theme is the pilgrimage of the people of God to the heavenly Jerusalem, and it is on this topic that our reading is taken from for today.

    Homily

     

     

    The theme of the readings today is humility.   From a careful reading of the gospel, I am left a little confused because it seems to me that the main point Jesus could be making is how to get more recognition by being humble.  That said, since I have nothing good to say about it, I want instead to take advantage of the fact that today we are going to be baptizing Emma and welcoming her into our community, and so would like to offer some thoughts about baptism. 

     

     

     

    If we go right back to the earliest days of Christianity, we find baptism!  Early in Mark’s gospel Jesus is baptized by John in the Jordan.  In Matthew’s gospel the apostles are instructed by Jesus just before his ascension to “go teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of Father, Son and Holy Spirit”.   And through out the Acts of the Apostles it becomes clear that baptism was the way to join this community.

    It was the Rite of Entry!  And all of the people who were being baptized did so after hearing the message or the teaching as Matthew puts it.  If kids were baptized, it was only because the family was joining. 

     

     

     

    It wasn’t until the fifth century when St. Augustine stated that only the baptized could get into heaven that the focus and practice shifted.  This of course created a huge pastoral problem for those who died before being baptized.  It was only in the 12th century that Peter Abelard came up with the notion of Limbo, for those who had died unbaptized. 

     

     

     

    One of the consequences of all of this was that religion was taught to kids, and not to adults!!  When was the last time any of you were at a formal class or session on your faith, outside of mass?  Think about it! 

    The catholic faith as most of us have it was given at a kid level.  This might have been fine at a time when most adults were not educated beyond the 6th grade, if even that, but today most adults have at least completed high school and a large number even college.

    Let me be clear, when I take about “faith” I am specifically referring to our personal response to God, our relationship with God.  Our acceptance of the invitation from God, to love God.  The information stuff, the doctrines, etc., are secondary.  When we were baptized as infants, someone else made that decision for us.  Today while Emma is being baptized, can we take a moment to reflect on the decision made for us, and make it for ourselves!  What does it mean in your life today, that you are baptized?

  • Sunday Homily 8-22-10, 21st Ordinary Time

    Readings: Isaiah, 66, 18-21; Psalm 117, Go out to All the World and tell the Good News; Hebrews 12, 5-7, 11-13; Luke 13, 22-30.

     

    Luke: 4 observations & an extra

     

     

    Author:  Luke, a physician, a gentile, a Christian, a resident of Antioch (a big Christian center in the early church, Syria), wrote in Greek, and wrote The Acts of the Apostles, also.

     

    Beginning 8-22-10

     

     

    Audience: Gentile Christians who are spread about, e.g., Antioch; more attention to women than other writers; special stories include the Good Samaritan & the Prodigal Son, which I think broadens the concept of our rather threatening Luke selection today.

     

     

    Time: ca. 90 C.E.  Note this is after the defeat of the Jewish rebellion    and the destruction of the temple ca. 70 C.E., & the separation of the Jewish & Gentile Christians from the synagogue ca. 80 C.E.

     

     

    Structure: follows & often copies Mark who builds his gospel around the Jewish liturgical calendar used in the synagogue.

     

     

    Sisters 8-22-10

     

    A Significant Contemporary Shift taking Place Today?

     

    –Ca. 450 C.E. the Council of Calcedon.  Big fight over nature of Jesus, one nature (all divine) or two natures (divine & human).  The two nature people won, not just with persuasion, but killing and bullying.

     

    –Today the one nature position is returning, but not the divine nature position.  The human nature.

     

    –Interesting analogy with Rosa Parks, who sparked the civil rights movement, Dec. 1, 1955, when she refused to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, AL.  Though she never did much else, she is considered the Mother of the Civil Rights Movement.  Others picked up the program and moved it forward.

     

    Did Christianity follow a similar path?  Jesus started something.  Is Rosa Parks an analogy of the Jesus event?  Was it not Jesus' followers, most of whom never knew him, who built the edifice?  Did he even know what was coming?  It is said that Jesus was first declared divine at the Council of Nicea, (Constantine's villa across from what became Constantinople/Istanbul) ca. 325 C.E.

    Homily: The Master of the House has Arisen and Locked the Door?

     

     

    Anybody know who Patrick Sharp is?  Anybody heard of him?

     

     

    Yes, he is the guy who Tuesday shot up the McKinney police station after setting his ammunition loaded truck on fire in the parking lot. 

     

     

    He is also the guy who an hour before that was messaging an adolescent girl in GA and maybe other young girls that he was going to do it.  He said, “I enjoy watching people drown.  I enjoy watching people beg for their life?

     

     

    Then he killed himself.

    Is this guy in hell?  Has the master of the house shut the door on him?  You say, “Well, I hope so.”  And according to Luke’s selection, which has Jesus saying, “Depart from me all you evil doers,” it sounds like this guy is in a bad place right now. 

     

     

    Maybe he was not warned adequately enough about this.  I certainly was as a kid.  Tony told me about the nun with the candle.  I’ll give you $10 if one of you boys can hold your finger in the flame for one minute.  Nobody?  Hell is this candle all over your body forever!

     

     

    I probably was partly motivated by this when I decided I better enter the Jesuits and be a priest.

     

     

    While not wanting to contradict this message, I would like to propose a broader picture and wonder, 'What if there is no hell?'  Two reasons: the nature of our God and the nature of us humans.

     

    The nature of God.  Hold on to the story of the Prodigal Son.  The father, the symbol of God in the story, does not close the door on the son who has done all the most grievous things.  He not only leaves the door open.  He runs down the driveway to embrace the kid when the father sees him shuffling up the lane all filthy and beaten down.  

     

    This is the best image of God.  Add to it the stars in the sky, the moon tonight, good people we know, teachers, parents, coaches.  

     

    The nature of us humans.  As a priest and as a psychotherapist I have worked with and come to know intimately Patrick Sharps.  I might think the person pretty bad until I hear their story.  Maybe bullied by companions, physically abused by a parent, or worse.  Even this Patrick Sharp knew he was damaged goods.  Why?  I've been humbled so often when I judged the book by the cover. 

     

    What if there is no hell for Patrick Sharp?

     

    What do you need to do to let loose of any old fears that you are going to hell?

  • Sunday Homily 8-15-10, Assumption

    Readings:  Revelation 11, 19; 12, 1-6; Psalm 45, The Queen stands at your Right Hand, arrayed in Gold; 1Corinthians 15, 20-27; Luke 1, 39-56. 

     

     

    Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary – Intro to Readings

     

     

    The Book of Revelation or the Apocalypse is one of those books of the Bible, which really needs careful study.  Written probably around the year 90 CE, its purpose was to offer encouragement to the early Christians who were undergoing brutal persecution under the Roman emperor Domitian. 

     

    Begin 8-15-10

     

     

    The style of writing is highly symbolic.  We find beasts representing evil and in this case the Roman Empire. 

     

     

    In today’s reading we have a description of a woman, not Mary, giving birth to a child and the dragon is waiting to devour the child.  Our tendency is to immediately think the woman is Mary, but there were mythical stories from India to Rome about a goddess who would bring forth a savior-king, and this woman would be pursued by a horrible monster, a personification of evil. 

     

     

    Our second reading is from Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians.  This is the longest of the letters in the New Testament, and in fact is one of the longest surviving letters in Greek from that period.  The letter addresses specific issues within the community, which we are told in Acts 18:4 Paul visited.  Today’s reading focuses on the contrast between Adam and Christ, and the fact that Christ’s mission is to return the kingdom to God the Father.

    The church today is honoring Mary.  And for our reflection I would like to ask the question, who do you honor?  You will remember that the fourth commandment told us to honor our father and mother.  And quite a few folks use the old “love, honor and obey” in their marriage vows, but do we have others whom we honor?

     

     

    This past Tuesday I got a phone call at about 8:30 AM from my 5-year-old grand daughter Alaina.  Usually on Tuesday I take her and her two sisters to dinner at Dennys, since Gayle is at Collin Co. clinic.  And on Tuesdays kids eat free at Dennys!!  She wondered if I would come early, like at about 10:00 AM!!  I was honored!

    But don’t get too excited, this same lass can run past me like I’m chopped liver if Gayle and I pull up and she sees Gayle!  But Tuesday I felt honored!  The more I think about the word honor, there are many examples of people getting honored in society:  the honor roll, the military has an 'honorable discharge’ etc. 

     

     

    In the end, when one is honored, one feels “special”.  And I am sure there are people in your life who are special, but do they know it??  When was the last time you told them.

     

     

    We all of us have people around us who are special, but it may be some time since they were told it!  This week, lets try to remember to honor those people.  Neither they, nor us, will be around for ever, and wouldn’t it be a shame if we failed to tell them just how special they were.

    Readings:  Wisdom 18, 6-9; Psalm 33, Blessed the People the Lord has chosen to be his own; Hebrews 11, 1 & 2, 8-19; Luke 12, 32-48. 

    Wisdom of Solomon Explanation:

    Author or composer: not Solomon, but a Jew living in Alexandria, Egypt who spoke and wrote excellent Greek.

    Date: ca. 100-200 BCE.  How do we know these facts?  Because of text analysis.  For example, while the author wrote in Greek, he uses phrases and expressions that have a Hebrew flavor.  Also, he mentions rulers and places that reveal date and locale like Alexandria (Egypt). 

    Winklers 8-8-10

    Subject matter: the book makes use of traditional Jewish material, as well as ideas borrowed from Greek philosophy, in order to teach that God rewards those who are faithful to him.

     

    Special Note: Wisdom is one of the 12-15 books of the deutero-canonical books of the bible.  Not OT nor NT, but in between and the subject of controversy over the centuries.  Were they really part of the bible or not?  How do you know?  Catholic church accepts the books, since the Council of Trent in ca. 1550.

     

    Today’s selection, chapter 18, the next to last chapter: rather quirky and opaque.  Why the editors choose these tiny, disconnected paragraphs, who knows.  Basically, the author is gloating over the fact that the Egyptian first born babies were all slaughtered by Yahweh when Pharoah would not let the Jewish people leave, the Passover.  I will read his vision, vv.14-19 of the same chapter.

    Do not be Afraid Any Longer

     

     

    Your man Tony O’Donovan and I have established a delightful practice of having either lunch or coffee every week. This past week we had a coffee scheduled for the Starbucks near me at the corner of Preston & Royal.

     

     

     

    When I arrived about 9:30, Tony was already seated at a table on the sidewalk.  So I went inside to get two coffees.  There was a line of 8-10 people.  No problem, it always goes quickly.

     

     

    In front of me was a guy about my height, but, let’s say a little portly without much apparent muscle tone.  The line is moving forward and the kids behind the coffee machines are calling to the people waiting in line.

     

     

    At one point a kid calls out to the guy in front of me, but the guy  is looking to my right away from the kid calling him.  So I touch him on his left shoulder and say, “The kid is calling you.”

     

     

    He turns around to me and he says in this intense voice, “Don’t you touch me.  Don’t you ever touch me!”

    Thump.  I am stunned.  I have nothing to say.  I just stand there and I guess I shake my head.  He pays for whatever he wanted and then goes to the end of the counter to pick it up. 

     

     

    Then, he returns to me still in line and says the same thing again, this time adding something like, “You don’t ever touch a person in public!” 

     

     

    Well, folks, I almost unloaded on him.  I was ready to knock him down and stomp on him.  I could handle the first time he spoke.  But when he returned to lecture me,  I nearly lost it.  I do not know what held me back.  Even now as I retell the event I feel my stomach muscles clenching up. 

     

     

    I go outside and narrate my adventure to Tony.  He says that I’m lucky I did not start a commotion that would bring the police.  He would have disowned me.  I was double lucky, too, because my next door neighbor lady was there, a girl I really love for all she did for me when I was home bound. 

     

     

    So what are the lessons from this event in connection with our readings? 

     

    First, I would suggest that you do not have coffee with Irish married priests.  Very bad karma. 

     

     

    However, I see two other lessons, one negative, the other positive. 

     

    Nancy 8-8-10

     

    First lesson, as it said in the very beginning of the Gospel, ‘Don’t be afraid any longer.’  I would suggest this means, don’t be afraid of people, future events, or God .

     

     

    As you continue in the Gospel, it seems to me Luke denies the very statement he makes in the beginning.  God is presented as a demanding master & we are servants who better be vigilant or we will get caught and sent straight to hell.

     

     

    Everyone has their personal view of what our God is like.  I can only say that for me God is at least benevolent, not a master who beats people if they behave in some negative way, like Mark is saying.  Moreover, I do not see us as servants, but rather friends and caretakers.

     

     

    Second lesson.  The Gospel talks a lot about vigilance.  Watch out or you are going to get whacked.  No way.  I suggest, as I have done before, the vigilance is for the beauty, the beauty of life, the beauty of nature, the beauty of people.
