    Readings:

Amos 1, 1 4-7 , Woe to the complacent in Zion.

Psalm 146,  Praise the Lord, My Soul.

1 Timothy 6, 11-16,  You, man of God, pursue righteousness, faith, & devotion

Says Victoria and her buddy, our gorilla mascot, "Welcome in, Everybody."

    Amos observations :

What :  One of the 12 minor prophets, only 9 chapters.

Who:  the book presents the thoughts and observations of Amos, who was a sheep herder and a fig farmer.  He was born in the southern kingdom of Judah in a little town south of Jerusalem, but he is condemning the people, especially the rich, of the northern kingdom, Israel.

Time:  Amos was active around 755 before Christ, but his words and message were revised and edited down through the years, especially during the Babylonian Captivity, around 555 before Christ.  He lives just before the Syrians destroy the northern kingdom of Israel, around 700 before Christ.

    CIMG5933

And Genevieve says, ""Hey, I got a belly button.  You, too?"

Message:  prayer and sacrifice don’t make up for social injustice and oppression of the poor by the rich.

Today:  God will punish you rich and prosperous for your abuse of the poor.  Amos may have seen the threat coming from the Syrians.

    7 Devils

I admit that the gospel today is so rich I would like to talk about it.  However, I really want to talk about our recent 10 day back packing trip in the 7 Devils region of central Idaho.  7 Devils refers to 7 mountain peaks in a straight row, very rough, vertical, probably needing technical equipment to climb.

There were 7 of us.  Beth and her swim buddy, Lynn, both excellent hikers and campers.   Mike, Bill, Ray, myself, and Andrew Sokolowski, a friend of Mike.  All these people are excellent, experienced campers and hikers.

    CIMG5959

Hi, Zoe, I missed you last week.

Three observations about the trip and the group.

First, there was a marvelous spirit of congeniality, fun, and joy among everybody.  This was evident always, but especially around 4:30, when we would have Happy Hour.  We begin this hour with an old tradition I learned the many years I went back packing with the Jesuits.   Everybody gets 2 oz. of Jack Daniels and a slice of cheese, Gouda, Muenster, or some other.

You can picture this.  We have been hiking during the day most often.  We have taken showers in the lakes or rivers.  Mike & Beth even swam in Shelf Lake where he measured the water temp at 52 degrees.  We are hungry and it is getting near twilight.  Mike and Ray have built a campfire.  Ray is cooking the freeze dried main course in a pot over the little stove.  Everyone is sitting around the fire on logs or bear canisters.    The camaraderie and joking around is the best.

It is enchanting.  It is why I go every year.

    CIMG5975

Offertory with Claire & Ray & Bernadette & Bill (two of whom, campers.  Guess whom.).

Secondly, there is a spirit of generosity and mutual responsibility.  We have to purify our water.  So we take pots of water from the lakes or river, pour them into a 1 gallon plastic bag that has a tube with a filter.  The water runs through the filter into another 1 gallon plastic bag.  We get our drinking water from the second bag.

This takes constant care and refilling.  Mike and Andy always kept the first bag filled.

Every evening during Happy Hour Ray was cooking the freeze dried main course, chili, Chicken tetrazzini, and others.    Mike brought chocolate bars for deserts.

    Campfire 1

The Campfire, Beth, Mike, Ray, Bill, Stack, & Lynn.  Andy on camera.

In the morning I always knew when it was time to get up, even if it was dark.  Ray would be banging pots, while he filled one and heated it for coffee and oat meal, whatever each one brought for their breakfast.

Bill would be checking the maps to see exactly where we were headed that day.  He was always our guide on the paths.

    Campfire 2

The Campfire again, Mike, Stack, Beth, Ray, & Bill.

And then there is the third.  Just when I think I am a pretty hot camper, I make a couple of small mistakes.  Humiliation.

We had pulled into this drop dead gorgeous campsite on the western edge of Shelf Lake. It had a beautiful fire ring, two, in fact.

The time was about 3:00 and the trail had been totally dry.  The campsite was even a bit dusty.   It was warm and sunny.

    Campfire 4

The Campfire again, Stack, Beth, Ray, Andy, Bill, & Lynn.

I set my tent up in a delightful little grove of trees.  I wanted the shade so I could take an afternoon nap after my shower.   We intended to spend 3 nights and 2 days doing day hikes out from the campsite.

The first day we cut short our day hike to get back to camp because it was looking like rain.  We had our usual Happy Hour and dinner.  I went to bed.  I had asked Andy to seam seal my tent earlier, so I was content.

About midnight a wind like a tornado blew in.  Dust everywhere, even filtering into my tent.  Then all out rain.  It stopped and then about 3:30 it blew again and it poured.  No problem, I went to sleep.

    Swim 2

Swim anybody?  Delightful, beautiful Shelf Lake, ca. 7 thousand feet, and a fresh 52 degrees.  Swim and you will look like Mike and Beth.

In the morning, yes, in the morning, I wake up.  I am on an island on my Therma rest air mattress.  Water had seeped up through my floor.

Two silly mistakes.  First, I set my tent in a slight depression.  Secondly, since it had been so dry when I set up, I forgot to put hand sized stones around the tent under the edge of the ground cover.

What had happened was that the water from a little trail in the woods near me emptied out near one corner of my tent.  The water jumped over my ground cover and settled under my tent floor, ultimately seeping inside.

    Hiking 1

Ray on top of the World.  We day hiked up here from Lower Bernard Lake.

Fortunately, the day was good and we were staying another night.   I dried my tent and moved to another spot.

30 years of camping, and I still can make beginner mistakes. Rather humiliating.

Without emulating the mistakes, where do you find similar camaraderie, joy, and mutual support?

      Hiking 2

Cooling off in the snow before returning to the Dallas heat.

    Rosemary’s Blessing of The Week

May you live a long life full of gladness and health,
With a pocket full of gold as the least of your wealth.

May the dreams you hold dearest be those which come true,
The kindness you spread keep returning to you.

May the friendships you make be those which endure,
And all of your grey clouds be small ones for sure.

And trusting in Him to Whom we all pray,
May a song fill your heart every step of the way.

    Homily

A hint I’m taking from the Service of the Word is how do we, like Jesus, or like Mother Theresa, attend to the poor?

From the Responsorial we have the verse from Psalm 113, “He raises up the lowly from the dust; from the dunghill he lifts up the poor…”

From the Alleluia verse we heard, “Though Jesus was rich, he became poor for us.”

    John 1

    John, ready for Mass

I heard about a new book by Patrick Phillips (on NPR, Terri Gross or Diane Rheem):  “Blood at the Root: A Racial Cleansing in America” by Patrick Phillips.  It’s about how the entire Black community of Forsythe County, who were also poor at that time in the early 20th century, were forced to leave that county in Georgia.  The author moved there as a kid in the 50’s from outside Atlanta …..there were no Blacks at all….why….rape….lynchings, robbed of houses and land…

    Alter Servers 1

Kevin, Georgie and Buddy are ready.

Abbeville (Louisiana where I grew up)– how protected and insulated we were from the poor, how very little we knew about the poor and the Black members of our community.

Dallas – we still protect our image today.  Remember a few weeks ago the city made the many poor of tent city under highway bridges just East of down town move out; now we’re talking about moving the poor out of their new tent cities that are even closer to Fair Park (near Haskell and I-30), with the State Fair about to open.

    The Offertory

Joe, Meredith, and Brent help with The Offertory

Ways this community has opened itself to the needs of the poor:

    • Love for the children with Bill Hammond’s group—before Christmas is for disadvantaged kids, kids from poor families, to have a fun day and receive clothes and other presents
    • Habitat for Humanity with Tom Fleming helping people build their homes, those who would probably no have a home otherwise
    • Helping fix up and paint houses and do yard work for those needing this help
    • Tornado damaged areas in Texas, in Oklahoma and beyond with Bill and Bona Responds
    • I remember this community helping with the census of the homeless in Plano area of Collin Co.
    • The generosity of community in providing financial outreach to Soul’s Harbor, and also giving items for their thrift stores.

    Shonda

    Shonda getting ready to sing

This list of examples of your generosity of spirit is amazing. You are not slackers; you consistently attend to and care for the poor and needy.  We respond to the poor among us as a community and also as individuals.  E.g., Thursday evening on Abrams going to DARCC (Dallas Area Rape Crisis Center) event, car stopped, guy behind car with gas can….  Or greeting a new neighbor.

    Genevieve 2

    Genevieve enjoying herself

Today’s question: How do you challenge yourself to see the poor, and care for the poor?   Maybe you have other ideas for this community helping the poor?  Will you pass on your ideas?

    Readings:

Exodus 32, 7-11, 13-14,  So the Lord relented in the punishment he had threatened.

Psalm 951,  I will rise and go to my father.

1 Timothy, 1, 12-17,  I am grateful to him who has strengthened me.

Luke 15, 1-32,   The Great Parable & story of the Prodigal Son.  (A superb story.)

    IMG_1884

Says Genevieve, "Wellll, Everybody, just come on in."

    Exodus observations :

What : a story, a long parable.  It has 2 parts, the exodus or exit from Egypt and the years wandering in the desert.

Who: the work is all about Moses, but he did not compose it.  Rather, it was put together by a committee during the Babylonian Captivity, 555 before Christ.

When: it appears that the purpose of the work was to encourage the people during the Babylonian Captivity.  It is not history and borrows stories from other cultures.  For instance, the parting of the Red Sea comes from a Mesopotamian creation myth and the 10 Commandments resemble the Code of Hammurabi.

Our Subject: The people have been bad, God is mad at them, and Moses defends the people.

The Prodigal Son: A Work of Art

I want to talk about my favorite parable of the whole Bible.  Two special notes to start with:

    1.  The author has carefully crafted a work of literary art.  Not history, not reality, but parable, story.
    2.   Purpose: to show that God loves us unconditionally, not conditionally.

Let me give you three observations about the son, three about the father, and an extra three to show you how astounding this story is.

The final question: can you believe in an unconditionally loving God?

    IMG_1888

Begin In the Name of the Father…

    First, the younger son:

    1. He has no right to ask for inheritance.  None.  By asking he is saying he wishes the father and the older son dead.  A symbolic murder.  Father can kill him for this.
    2. He works feeding pigs instead of asking for help from the temple.  This means he rejects the religious tradition and is considered a traitor not only to the family, but to the religion.
    3. So, as a horrible failure as a son of the family and a son of the religious tradition, he decides to return.  A conversion, not quite.   He makes up his little speech and heads home.  He is hungry to the point of dying.  Do this, he calculates,  or die.  Many listening Jews would say, Die.

    Offertory

Offertory with Tom, Teresa, and Tim Quinn.

The Father: he actually commits as many crimes and sins as the son.

    1. He runs down the road to the son when he sees him coming.  A very undignified action.  Outrageous.  People who emphasize conditional love point out that the son at least came back.  Despite this point, all the other elements of the parable point to a father with unconditional love.
    2. He embraced and kissed the son.  Huge violation of Jewish religious custom and law.  By doing this the father positions himself outside of the religious & cultural community.  He is a reject like the son.
    3. He cuts the son’s speech off before he can finish, eliminating the last sentence, “treat me as you would one of your hired workers.”  And to make it worse, he orders the servants to bring the finest robe, ring, and sandals.

    CIMG5839

Daddy, I think it is time I start playing this guitar.

The robe, the ring, and the sandals:

    1. The robe: restores the son’s dignity.
    2. The ring: gives authority to the son, even equal to the father and certainly more than before he left.
    3. The sandals: gives the son freedom.  Slaves were not given sandals so they would not run away.  The father is doubling the message he gave when he cut the son’s speech off before he could say the third part about being treated as a servant.

    CIMG5836

Thanks, Georgie, for being such a great help to Buddy.

A word about the older son, because we so often identify with him.  Two additional and final points.

    1. That he tells his father how he feels.  Great.  In those days, it meant the father can kill him.  Today: communication.
    2. What is his challenge: acceptance of his brother, his father, and himself; focus on gratitude for all he has; move from trying to be a good boy to loving?  Any one of these?  Or all?  All.

    CIMG5830

Zoe, we got to get you up to light the candles again some time.

I apologize for so much data.  There is even more.  The point is that the story is a carefully crafted literary work of art that attempts to describe how totally unconditionally loving our God is.

I had once a lengthy discussion with another priest who insisted that the father's love was conditional, conditional on the son choosing to return.  I still believe that the love was unconditional.  I am influenced by the two previous parables, the lost sheep & the lost coin. Luke is an artist.   It is no coincidence that the two little parables both emphasize the Hound of Heaven concept.

How does this image of God reflect your image of God?   Can you believe that our God loves you and me unconditionally?

I would appreciate it, if you would please post the attached message to your blog.

I really value all of the support from you and the Stack Community.

    Thanks, Anthony DeGenova

    Dear Stack Ministry,

Hello, my name is Anthony DeGenova.  I am 17 years old, and am working on my Boy Scouts Eagle Project.  My mission is to donate LEGO blocks to under-privileged children.  This project includes the collection, cleaning, sterilizing, sorting, packaging, and delivery of the LEGO blocks to a few charities that cater to children. I plan to donate all of mine, and would like very much to collect as many as possible from friends and neighbors like you, who wouldn’t mind giving theirs up for needy children.  I am accepting both used and new LEGO blocks. Please bring the LEGO blocks to church and my parents will pick them up.  Alternatively, I will gladly pick them up from your house, at your convenience.

If you have any questions, please contact me at:

    Telephone: 972-495-3639

I look forward to your support, and hope to make this drive and my Eagle project a success. Thank you very much for your help,
