• Sunday Homily June 9, 2013, 10th Ordinary Time C

    Readings:

1 Kings  17, 17-24,  The life breath returned to the body of the child.

Psalm 30,  I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me.

Galatians 1, 11-19,  The gospel preached by me is not of human origin.

Luke 9, 11-17,  Young man, I tell you, arise.

    Emma 6-9-13

Emma with her arm back in a sling. She was getting a bit sporting before the collar bone had completely healed.

     Observations on the readings:

    1 Kings 17:17-24

The young man’s mother recognizes that the word of the Lord
truly comes from Elijah’s mouth.  He
breaths forth life into her son in this parable.

    Second reading: Galatians 1:11-19

Our Gospel is the proclamation of good news, where good news, is a noun. Paul is preaching good news that came to him
through a revelation of Jesus Christ, where preaching
    good news
    is a verb.  The Gospel
    hadn’t been written, yet.

    Leo 6-9-13

Leo has found a new toy.

    Gospel:  Luke 7:11-17

Paul uses the word ‘flesh’ at least 100 times in his
letters, once in our short reading from Galatians.

     I want
you to understand a verse from John’s gospel.
‘What is born of flesh is flesh; what is born of Spirit is spirit.  To be born only of flesh means that when a
decision needs to be made that person relies only on his mind…and the mind
seeks to have the flesh satisfied.

    Celeste 6-9-13

    Celeste.

    Everything
God created is good; the flesh is good. For example; if you work hard all
morning your stomach lets your mind know that your body wants some food.  So, if you are home, you use your mind and go
to the refrigerator to find something to eat.
Your mind will seek to satisfy the flesh when you open that door.  Anything is fair game.

    Cupcakes of the Week 6-9-13

Cupcakes of the Week, Mike, Diane, and John (really for Alison).

But, what is born of Spirit is spirit, where
the Spirit has a [capital S].  The Spirit
enhances the flesh!  Instead of a desire
to satisfy your flesh your desire is to put your spouse first, even if he or
she is not there. What is born of Spirit is spirit.

    Offertory 6-9-13

Offertory, Jean, Doug, Cliff, and John.

A great way to hone in on Spirit-living
begins with, ‘in everything give thanks.’
If you go to the refrigerator only to find it empty, give thanks. Your
desire to satisfy just the flesh will begin to fade away.  Pick up the list of things on the counter
that you and your spouse make to replenish the empty refrigerator.  Give thanks when the parking place is further
away from the store than you had hoped. The exercise will be good.

    Harper 6-9-13

    Harper.

Someone left a cart in a good parking place.
Give thanks that someone will find it a good place as soon as you push it
    toward the store doors.

    Number 2. Affirm
your spouse for the great things that he or she put on the grocery list.   Affirm the stocker who has just filled up
    the shelf, ‘looks great.’

    Delgados 6-9-13

Delgado Corner with Bernadette and Gilberto sitting with Emma, who has come to see where all her playmates are today. They are on vacation.

    3, Be a good
listener at home, and enjoy looking into your spouse’s eyes and touching his or
    her shoulder or hand.

    Last of all always
forgive your spouse; it is in giving that you receive.  Remember, forgiveness is the message of the
good news of Jesus Christ.  Recall for a
moment our communal services in Lent and Advent.  You listen, you look into each other’s eyes,
you ask to be forgiven, you forgive others; you embrace; you affirm; you give
    thanks.

    Little Axe 6-9-13

Little Axe, OK, scene of the first of 3 tornadoes around & in OK City. Notice how the wind has bent the two steel I beams which had been the foundation for a large mobile home.

In today’s gospel, a young man
is seeking forgiveness. The assembly ritually carries him.  He’s not heavy; he’s their brother. The
assembly mourns along with his mother for all of times that they have not shown
love.  They are professing their faith with
    him.

    23 A, trash pile

Little Axe, we made 3 piles on the edge of the road, metals, wood, and trash. This is mostly wood. A trailer truck with a set of large jaws was picking this up and placing it into trash trucks.  This pile has been pushed up to the road by a bulldozer.

In this parable Jesus is there to grant forgiveness to this young
man.  He will rise to be set free, unbound from whatever had enslaved him.  In faith, through the power of the Holy Spirit
we can say those words to someone; and we have during Lent and Advent.

Is there someone you know who needs
to be forgiven.   Give thanks that you
have the time to heal yourself and them this week.

    7 pick up 2

Little Axe, upside down pickup with a trailer dumped on top. Chaos everywhere. More about the trip this coming Sunday.

Today we had the pleasure of hearing the personal story of Reggie, a resident at Soul's Harbor.

Reggie went to OU on a football scholarship, left OU, and hit the bottom with drugs, even to eating from dumpsters and sleeping in port-o-potties in the winter.  He said that he cannot go around Olive Garden resaurants today because he used to survive on the food in their dumpsters.

With Soul's Harbor he has gotten his life back and become Brent's right hand man at the residence.

  • Sunday Homily, May 26, 2013, Trinity, C

    Readings:

Proverbs 8, 22-31,  When the Lord established the heavens I was there.

Psalm 8,  O Lord, our God, how wonderful your name in all the earth.

Romans 5, 1-5,  We have peace with God.

John 16, 12-15,  I have much more to tell you.

    Beginning 5-26-13

    And now to begin….

    Observations on Proverbs

What : basically a collection of moral and religious teachings.  Pretty boring.  Some amusing like—

    A Trinity

Last Friday Rosemary & I made one of our usual morning bike trips around White Rock Lake.  We come down the White Rock Creek Trail from the north and proceed south, clockwise along East Lawther Drive by the Arboretum, to the dam, where we take a vista stop.

    Buddy-Torri

    Buddy and Torri.

The bike path running along the south shore of the lake and Garland Road is pretty high over the lake and the dam.  There is an observation deck extending out over the lake and dam, which is about 20 feet above the lake and the spillway.  We are looking north across the whole expanse of the lake at this observation point.

    Emma-Zoe 5-26-13

Zoe and Emma with her sling from breaking her collarbone falling out of bed.

Friday when I rode up and stopped just ahead of Rosemary, there was a
young dad with his one or two year old little boy.  Dad had a trailer for the boy and he towed the trailer with his bike.

When I arrived the little blond haired boy with about two teeth was
being held by his dad against the black wrought iron railing.  The boy was throwing little sticks into the lake and watching them go over the spillway.
He was squealing with delight and when I applauded he was more
joyful.  We talked a bit and I was enchanted.

    Cupcake 5-26-13

Cupcake of The Week for Emma to welcome her back after a bad week.

I want to talk this morning about the marvelous Psalm 8 we have just read. It is talking about us and God’s work in us when it says,

You have made people a little less than the angels,

And crowned them with glory and honor.

You have given them rule over the works of your hands.

I looked at the nice dad and his delightful son and thought to myself, ‘What beauty.”

    Harper 5-26-13

Cupcake of The Week to Harper for being so pretty and bringing her grandmother, Cathy.

The psalm writer also talks about the work of His Fingers.  Another striking image.  I saw the work that Friday, also, in the beauty simply in the rich tones of green as we rode along the path in the woods.

Then he talks about the heavens and says,

    When I behold
your heavens, the work of your fingers,

the moon and the stars which you set in place.

Have you ever done this?  Lie down on the ground on your back and look up at the sky?

    Communion 5-26-13

    Volunteers to help with communion.

I do this when we are backpacking in the mountains and I find it
terrific. Whatever the sky is doing, clear blue, partly cloudy, or windy, it is
    sensational.  I come away feeling
humbled, awe-struck, and blessed to be here.

Why I never do it except in the mountains, who knows.  Every year I
    intend to.

    Toy World 5-26-13

Toy World with Emma, Zoe, Buddy, and Torri.

Take a look at that marvelous Psalm 8.   When is the next time you will look at the sky?  When look at the colors of nature.  When look at a child, like the kids running around here,  and say to yourself, 'What beauty!'?

  • Sunday Homily May 19, 2013 Pentecost C

     Readings:

Genesis 11, 1-9,  The whole world spoke the same language.

Psalm 104,  Lord, send out your spirit and renew the face of the earth.

Romans  8, 22-27,  The spirit comes to the aid of our weakness.

Note: the Genesis and Romans readings are from the vigil Mass readings.

John 14, 15-16, 23-26  If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

    Beginning 5-19-13

     Genesis observations

What: First book of the Bible.  It presents Adam & Eve, Cain & Abel, Noah and the flood, and the Tower of Babel, our subject today in Chapter 11.

The book also presents the Great Patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (also called Israel, because he is seen as the father of the tribe) , and Jacob’s 12 sons (12 tribes of Israel), including Joseph, the beloved, youngest son, who is sold to the camel driving caravan, which takes him to Egypt.  Which leads us to the book Exodus, and you know what that is
    about.

    Good reading.  Not history.  Myth.

    Chloe 5-19-13

    Chloe the Dancer.

Subject:  The word Genesis means origins, and that is what it is about.

When:  compiled around the end of you know what, the Babylonian Captivity,  say, 555 years before Christ.

Our subject:  The Tower of Babel.  The story is an example of great spin.   There were the languages of many tribes in those days.   Someone attributes this to the sinfulness of the people.  This is like the preacher who said the New Orleans hurricane was sent by God to punish the people.

    A Pentecost Story

I have a Pentecost story for you this morning.  I am considering Pentecost to be a time when we get hit by a new or special spirit.

    This is what happened.

Last Saturday we started building the 73rd Habitat house, many of which are in the Douglas subdivision of East Plano.

    Georgie 5-19-13

    Georgie ready to help.

We all gathered about 7:30, probably 30 or more people.  It was fun to see our community team and to see other people from previous  builds.

After a while I begin to know some of these people.

At one point I see an elderly lady I had known from our last build, the next door house.  I remember this lady quite well.  She had really bummed me off one Saturday at the last house.

    Buddy 5-19-13

    Buddy with his momma, Michelle.

I had arrived a bit late this Saturday.  Most everyone was putting up and sealing siding. I had done this the Saturday before, so I was comfortable pitching in again.  It was muddy because it had rained.  I had on my Keene sandals.   I noticed this year in the preliminary Habitat notice that they prefer strong shoes with heels and toes.  My mistake.

So I see this group of about 3 working on the west side of the house.  I go up and ask if they need help.  This lady, who is one of the supervisors I
discovered, looks at me and kind of snorts.

    Cupcake A 5-19-13

Cupcakes of The Week, Debbie and Doug on their birthdays.

My memory tells me that she proceeds to tell me that they don’t need any help, that I am late, and that I don’t even have on correct shoes.

Can you imagine that I was really steamed?  So I went around to the east side of the house and worked there for the rest of the morning, avoiding that woman.

    Cupcake B 5-19-13

Cupcake of the week to Dick and Judy on their 10th Anniversary.

Last Saturday morning I see her.  I say to myself, “Stay away from her.”

I start helping to build the exterior walls, situating studs, and hammering.  Since there are an abundance of people on the exterior walls, I decide to go work on the interior walls where fewer people were working.

    Cupcake C 5-19-13

John accepting The Cupcake of The Week for his daughter Joey on her 8th anniversary with Dan.

You guessed it.  The woman is one of the mid-level supervisors of the interior wall project.  Pretty soon I am aware of her standing near me watching my hammering.  And she says, “Good job.”  Then she asks me to help her on some special corner.  When I get it just perfect, she
again compliments me and thanks me for coming out.

For the rest of the morning, I work with her, like her assistant, even redoing some of the hammering work the younger people did a little less than exactly.  All the time she is most gracious and I find her spirit charming to work with.

I had one of those experiences, folks.  Because of one negative experience with this lady, I wrote her out of my will.  Last Saturday I had a complete new look.  A Pentecost event.

    Sandra & Cathy 5-19-13

    Sandra and Cathy.

I propose that these Pentecost events can happen with people, with a sunrise or sunset, a piece of music, a meal, a birthday or anniversary, a graduation, a wedding, a birth,  or even a death.

What is your last Pentecost event?
