The Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time – Reflection on Readings

Jeremiah.  One of the great prophets.  Spent almost 50 years active as a prophet. at least from 627 to 585.  So we know, time wise we are back before and during the fall of Jerusalem.  I guess, when you are in the middle of a very busy road, you are going to get run over, and if we look at a map of where the kingdom of Judah was, back then, we see that to the north and north east were the Assyrians and Babylonians and to the south west were the Egyptians, and as each army marched to do battle with the Egyptians or the Egyptians marched north, they had to pass thru Judah.  And an army does not pass thru without leaving its mark!

By the way, if you ever visit the Sistine Chapel, Jeremiah is part of Michael Angelo’s ceiling.

Jeremiah was at a very difficult time.  The last of the kings of Judah were weak and didn’t have good foreign policies.  Plus, internally there were strong pro-war groups, which caused the kings to not pick their battles wisely.  Our reading today is from the very beginning of Jeremiah’s time and we hear God promising Jeremiah that God will take care of him.

Our second reading from Paul’s letter to the Corinthians is a favorite of Weddings!  But it is also a very powerful reminder to us of how we should be with one another.

The Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time – Homily

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you.”  An amazing statement!  Poor Jeremiah!  He hadn’t a chance!  Our first reading picks up right after God has told Jeremiah that he is to be His prophet and Jeremiah had answered that he thought he was too young.  “"Ah, Lord GOD!" I said, "I know not how to speak; I am too young." were Jeremiahs words, and then we hear God’ answer, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you.”

And this can be said about each one of us!  Think about that for a moment.  Before we were even formed in our mother’s womb, God knew us!

    Kites 1-31-10

A mother knows a baby before it is born, and this is important.  Remember how a mother sees her child.  The smartest, most beautiful, wisest etc.!!

How often do we think we know others? Jesus in Nazareth was the carpenter’s son, nothing else.  Plus there was a bit of jealousy because the locals had heard about some of his miracles elsewhere, but they could only see him as the carpenters son.

Humans are funny the way we look at things and other people.  We have a tendency to see with prejudiced eyes.

I remember the North of Ireland Tribunal the BBC held years ago, the three old judges could barely sit up, yet their minds were razor sharp.  I had been prejudging them because they looked old.

Before I formed you I knew you.

Paul’s Love is…not jealous, rude, etc.  God knows each one of us, and loves us.  We need to get past our poor vision of others by remembering that our eyesight could be off.  Could we be seeing others thru a set of values, which we need to reexamine?  How would we fare if God had our eyesight?

  • Sunday Homily 1-24-10, 3rd Ordinary Time

    Readings: Nehemiah 3, 2-10; Psalm 19, Your Words, Lord are Spirit and Life; 1 Corinthians 12, 12-30; Luke 1, 1-4, 4, 14-21

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time – Reading Reflections

Our readings today focus primarily on Readings.  Our first Reading from Nehemiah gives us a complete change from the Old Testament reading we have been hearing from for many weeks, namely the time of Exile.  For Nehemiah is writing from a time after the Exile.  The “Remnant”, as the people who had been scattered were referred to, had come back to Jerusalem.  This writing is part of a greater collection of writing composed of 1 and 2 Chronicles and Ezra, whom we hear about in our selection today.  This is the only Sunday in the three-year cycle of readings when we hear from Nehemiah, makes you wonder what he did wrong!

    Mass beginning 1-24-10

The last four books of the Hebrew canon are Ezra, Nehemiah, 1 and 2 Chronicles.  In our first reading today, we will hear about Ezra, so it is worth commenting about both Nehemiah and Ezra as they are both the two men most responsible for the reorganization of Jewish life after the Exile.  There are good reasons for believing that originally the Books of Ezra and Nehemiah formed the last part of a single literary work that began with 1 and 2 Chronicles. Some authors even regard Ezra himself as having been the anonymous Chronicler. c. 400 B.C. as the time of composition of this work.

Nehemiah was the man of action who rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem and introduced necessary administrative reforms. Ezra in turn was the great religious reformer who succeeded in establishing the Torah as the constitution of the returned community.

The second reading from Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians continues where we left off last week, addressing issues within the community in Corinth.  I have chosen to use the optional shorter version and avoid most of the anatomy lesson.

    Lily 1-24-10

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time – Homily

It would seem that the topic for today is “Reading the Scriptures”.  In our first reading we hear of Ezra reading to the people for hours and hours, think how lucky you all are today with these short reading we have!!  In the Gospel, Luke we have the very first verses from Luke’s gospel and then a jump to chapter 4 and a very detailed account of Jesus in his local synagogue in Nazareth.  What strikes me as interesting is the detail, almost like stage directions, which Luke gives us of Jesus getting up to read.

And here in Plano today, we too have listened as we do each week to the Scripture being read to us!  There are not too many human activities, which have remained in place for about 2300 years.  So we must ask the question – what is it about the Scriptures, which makes it survive for so long?

If we start to look at the Bible, we realize that it is the story of a peoples understanding of their relationship with their God, and how that relationship played out over several hundreds of years.  With a sense of their uniqueness, they try to answer the most fundamental questions about human life, how did it begin, what is our place in the world.  To answer these questions they told stories.  Unfortunately up until quite recently we tended to view the stories as historically accurate, and there are some folks who still view them as accurate!!

    Donut Shoppe 1-24-10

As Catholics we have a very long tradition of NOT reading the bible, it was viewed as too dangerous!  Remember, it was reading and interpreting the Bible was what caused the Reformation.  Today, I know of folk who use the Bible to determine their whole code of relationships. “Wives submit to your husbands” came from a society of about two thousand years ago, and yet, in spite of our more liberated view of humans, there are folk who happily live this way.

In 1943, Pope Pius XII published an encyclical “Divino Afflante Spiritu” on Bible Studies.  This was really the first time that the Church was officially encouraging Catholics to read the Scriptures again.

So what about us here today?  Each Sunday, we gather and get short readings and hopefully some background to those reading so that we may understand the context. But you are probably the most educated Catholics ever to sit and listen to the Scriptures.  Remember, when Pius XII was submitting his encyclical, less than 70 years ago, most people could barely read, and had not even completed high school.  So their thinking was done for them by the Church.  Today, we are invited to read and reflect on the Scriptures ourselves.  There is much available by way of help.  Even if we use the online edition of the New American Bible, http://www.usccb.org/nab/bible/index.shtml there are helpful introductions and not too many footnotes.

    Sacrament of the Sick 1-24-10

If we accept that the Scriptures are inspired by the Spirit, then careful reading and reflection can help us to deepen our relationship with God and allow us to better our relationships with one another.

The Vatican II council issued a document on the Scriptures called “The Constitution on Divine Revelation” and urges us to “learn by frequent reading of the divine scriptures the “excellent knowledge of Jesus Christ” (Phil 3:8) and that prayer should accompany the reading of sacred scripture, so that God and man may talk together; for “we speak to him when we pray; we hear him when we read the divine sayings”. #25.

So what is to be our take-away for today?  “Be careful how you read the scriptures” Take the time to understand who wrote it, why it was written, whom it was written for and what was the culture.  Remember, spin-doctors are nothing new.

Notes on Readings for the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Our First Reading is from Isaiah, chapter 62.  The book of the Prophet Isaiah is quite long, 66 chapters and in reality falls into two separate books.  The first section up to and including chapter 39 was written starting around 740 BCE.  Up to this time, Judah, the southern kingdom had enjoyed great prosperity.  The northern kingdom had fallen to the Assyrians, but the southern kingdom, including Jerusalem was fine.  Isaiah starts to write because the southern kingdom has subjected itself to the Assyrians and accepted their gods.

    Mass 1-17-10

Second Isaiah was written many years later.  The situation is totally different because the kingdom has been conquered by the Babylonians, Jerusalem and the Temple have been destroyed and the people carried off into exile.  Our reading today is towards the very end of the book and the author is trying to offer encouragement to the people about the New Jerusalem.  He is trying to build up their faith in God that everything will be all right.  The reading is really a kind of liturgical song.

The Second Reading is from Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians, and the issue he deals with is a whole lot of arguing within the community about the different gifts of the Spirit, and which is the best!!  Just like little kids!!  The verses, which come just before our reading, should really have been included, and I have decided to have them read as part of the reading, as they give full meaning to the reading.

    Geri 1-17-10

Homily for Second Sunday of Ordinary Time

Today is the only Sunday in Ordinary time this year when our Gospel comes from St John.  For the rest of the year we will be reading Luke.  We will run into John’s Gospel again in Lent.  The gospel reading today is about Jesus’ First Miracle, and this is probably why we have this reading, as we are pretty much at the start of the New Year.  Last Sunday we had the Baptism of Jesus, and since John is the only Gospel with this event, hence we have John today!

A few words first about the Gospel itself.  Written between the years 90 and 100 CE.  It is very different for the other three Gospels, namely Matt, Mk and Luke.  They are referred to as the Synoptic Gospels because of their similarities.  But John is very different.  Remember this is the gospel the starts out with “In the beginning was the Word”, by the way, remember that is also the way the book of Genesis begins, “In the beginning…this is no accident.  In Genesis we have the story of the creation taking seven days.  If you read Johns Gospel, you will find that we are in fact on the seventh day if one is counting days in Johns Gospel!  Our reading today properly begins with the words “on the third day”.  That in itself sounds familiar.  It is intended to.

    The Bentleys 1-17-10

I would like to point out a couple of things about John’s gospel.  Written at the end of the first century.  The temple had been destroyed, and this Christian community had been expelled from the synagogue.  There was fierce animosity between the Jewish community and the Christian community.

John never identifies the mother of Jesus as Mary, only as his mother.  We meet her twice in the whole gospel, the first time in today’s reading and the other time is at the foot of the cross when he says to her to take care of the beloved disciple John.

But lets look at today’s gospel.  A wedding, Jesus shows up with his mother and his disciples.  The narrative is carefully crafted.  There is an exchange between Jesus and his mother.  “They have no wine, what’s it to me.”  Then between the mother and the servants, “do whatever he tells you”, then between Jesus and the servants, “go fill the jars” and finally between the head steward and the bridegroom, who doesn’t have anything to say!  And again remember Jesus is later referred to as the Bridegroom!

By the way, that is a whole lot of wine!!  Somewhere between 120 and 140 gallons!! To the person familiar with the Old Testament, that would remind them of paradise!  An abundance of wine.  The water jars were normally used as part of the ritual purification process, which later we know that Jesus basically ignored completely.  But the piece I would like to draw attention to is brief exchange between Jesus and his mother.  It is one of those strange exchanges.  They should have whacked him properly for his answer when they found him in the temple at 12 and because they didn’t this is what you get!!

How are we to understand the whole thing?  Woman, my hour has not yet come!  Remember the next time we meet his mother was when his hour had come!  In spite of the harshness of the rebuke, Mary’s faith is demonstrated by the fact that she knows that anything asked in Jesus’ Name will be granted and so she simply tells the servants “Do whatever He tells you”.  That is the model of faith.

Faith is one of those words where I think for many of us there may be a bit of confusion.  At times faith and a belief system are often interchanged, but they are very different.  A belief system is all the things that have been put together by the Church as facts about our faith, but faith itself is quite simple.  It is an acknowledgement that there is a God who, in human terms, loves me and wants me to share that love with others!  As humans, we tend to complicate things, but it really is that simple.  Jesus told us to Love God and Love our Neighbor.  That was it.  With that in mind, we can go back and look at Mary’s actions in the story today.  First of all, she was sensitive to the embarrassment, which the married couple were about to be in, and secondly she had complete confidence that whatever she asked her Son, he would answer.  She didn’t get caught up in how he answered her, which would have been a distraction.  She simply told with servants to do whatever he told them to do.

    Anniversary & Birthday 1-17-10

Now this is Mary we are holding up, as a model.  We will spend our lifetime trying to live with that kind of complete trust in God.  This is the woman who years earlier had said, “Be it done unto me”.

We have gathered here today because of our own faith.  To have it nourished, to listen to God’s Word, and to share in this Meal.  We have the opportunity to live that faith each day, with our family, our neighbors, the folks we work with or are at school with us.  This week, lets remember Mary’s very simple “faith-filled” response, “Do whatever he tells you”  An answer she could give with complete confidence because she knew she was loved!

    The Status of The Hip:

    1.  The whole process since Wednesday A.M. has been amazingly efficient and pain free (except when I forgot the pain med when moving from the hospital to the house).

    2.  I can walk with a walker, fairly easily & every day more easily.

    3.  I was told one hour of being up, one hour of rest.  So true.  After an hour sitting up, I am exhausted and can sleep an hour.  After a day of this, I am wiped out by 7:00.

    4.  Thanks for everything.

Baptism & Original Sin: traditional & contemporary theology

Traditional theology on baptism & original sin:

    a.  Original sin: the 1 sin of Eve & Adam, the eating of an apple, ruptured the relationship between God & Humans.

    b.  Why we baptized: purification & removal of that original sin inherited by all babies.  A new born baby was a sinner & would go to Limbo forever if not baptized before dying.

    Mass 1-10-10

Contemporary theology on baptism & original sin:

    a.  Original sin:

    1.  no original sin

    2.  Genesis story of the fall is allegory, not fact.  No Garden of Eden and no Adam & Eve.

    3.  from Darwin's Origin of the Species the idea has developed that in our human infancy, we needed certain behaviors to survive.  For instance, killing another person & stealing (like food).  As our ancestors formed communities, norms of social behavior emerged, for example, the 10 commandments.

    4.  St. Augustine, ca. 400:

–A major, if not the major influence on Christian/Catholic theology of original sin and human nature from his time to today

–After conversion from a rather lusty life at 32, he had a pessimistic view of human nature, different from early Christianity

–St. John Chrysostom, bishop of Constantinople (Istanbul), Pelagius, a British monk, & Julian of Eclanum, Italy, a bishop, all found nature good and fought against Augustine

–Augustine used all means to vanquish his opponents with their positive view that nature was good, even to sending a gift of horses to the pope to influence his decision.  Augustine won.

    Daniel 1-10-10

    b.  Why we baptize today: (using the contemporary theology)

    1.  To celebrate a new life

    2.  To ritually & formally welcome the new person into a family, a community, and to a God famous for love and acceptance.

    3.  To cleanse after the journey

    We are Getting Better

I have one more Christmas story to celebrate this baptism today.

There are three people in the story.  My good friend, her little daughter, and her niece, who is about 16 or 17.  The story took place at Collin Creek Mall one or two days just after Christmas.  Guess what they were doing.  Bringing things back.

It happened that the niece had offered to take the daughter to the mall to have girl fun while her mother went to the mall to return various items.  After they had been there a while, the niece phoned to say that it was getting to be time for her to leave.  So could she return the daughter?

They agreed that the easiest way to arrange the swap was for the niece to take the girl in her car, drive over to where my friend's car was, and then transfer the daughter & her car seat.  So they met in the parking lot, my friend's car in a parking place, the other car in the aisle behind the first car.

Mother goes into the niece's car, unbuckles her daughter, and places the girl in her car.  Then she disconnects the car seat and reconnects it in her own car, securing her daughter in place.  Somewhere in this process she set her purse down.  Yep, you guessed it.

Who knows where she set it down.  Maybe by her niece's car, maybe by her own.  But apparently outside.

She gets into her car and drives off.  Almost immediately she notices her purse is missing.  She calls her niece and asks her to look in her car.  No purse.

So they both return to where the car was parked.  They drive around, ask people.  No sign of the purse.  The niece finally departs and mom  goes home.  She calls her mom, then she calls the mall security.  Nothing had been reported or brought in.  Security says to call the police.  The police do not know what to do.  Was it stolen?  Or was it forgotten?

She thinks of her credit card, of getting a new license, she thinks of her phone.  So, using her mom's phone, she starts calling her phone hoping someone will answer   No one answers.

    Georgie 1-10-10

Time passes.  A few hours later in the evening, her mom gets a phone call.  It is young boy, a high school aged kid.  He has the purse.  He says he and his dad found it in the parking lot and simply used the phone's incoming calls to call the number identified as "Mom."

The mom who got the purse back was Bobbi Jo Whitley, mother of Dillon, Hunter, and Audry.  Bobbi's mom is Jo Whitley, who read this morning.  The purse came back.  Nothing missing.

Are there not lots of good stories like this?  Are we not evolving into a better people?  Scott Burns said so in his column in the Dallas Morning News a couple of weeks ago.  A great Jesuit geologist and paleontologist, Teilhard de Chardin, thought so, saying that the human race is slowly becoming more mature, more sensitive, more peaceful.  I think so, too.  For lots of reasons.

    What do you think?
