  • Sunday Homily 1-8-12, Epiphany

Readings:  Isaiah 60, 1-6, Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem, your light has come!; Psalm 72, Lord, every nation on earth will adore you; Ephesians, 3, 2-6, The Gentiles are coheirs; Matthew 2, 1-12, The Magi arrived from the east asking, "Where is the newborn king of the Jews?"

    Isaiah, a review

Here is another of those passages which make me love Isaiah so much.  I said this on the 3rd Sunday of Advent, when we read Isaiah 61.

Today we have Isaiah III talking again to the Jews who have returned to Jerusalem from the Babylonian Captivity, about 550 years before Christ.

When he says Jerusalem or Zion, you may consider it a metaphor referring particularly to us, to you and to me.

    Ephesians

Paul is directly talking Epiphany, that is God to Gentiles, to us.

    Epiphany Every Day?

Almost every evening Rosemary & I take Aviana for a walk along our street.  Usually we meet a variety of neighbors and neighbor dogs.  It is a fun connection.

This past week we were walking when we met a lady who lives across and down the street.  She had tragedy hit her family.  A daughter with 3 young kids died 18 months ago with cancer.  It had been a lengthy fight and numerous neighbors had helped out.

    Taylor & Zack 1-8-12

We asked her how she was doing.  She waited a moment and then with a gulp she said, “Ollie has cancer.”

Ollie is a 3 year old son of the mother who died.  A week or so before Christmas the family noticed that Ollie had a lump on his forehead.  They took him to get checked and discovered that he has a very rare and aggressive form of child cancer.  Only about 350 cases occur a year in the States, hitting children between ages 1 and 5.  Ollie is 3.

    Torri 1-8-12

The lump has been removed but a port has been put on Ollie’s chest for chemotherapy.  He is expected to receive chemo from 6 to 11 months.  Meanwhile, another small tumor I think in his lymph nodes grew about a centimeter in just about 10 days.

Folks, this was an epiphany moment for me.  I wanted to cry with our neighbor.  My heart went out to Ollie, his dad, his brother & sister, and to my neighbor & her husband, to the whole family.

    Sienna 1-8-12

I would suggest that an epiphany is

        1.  a God light breaking through, especially through & into those corners of myself where I don’t go,

        2. a deeper awareness of the fragility of the Gift, the Gift of life & health & control

        3.  a deeper awareness of my normal insensitivity & ingratitude.

The Accident was an Epiphany.  Check Rosemary.

I suggest that there are large, small, and medium epiphanies.  However, they occur daily.  At home, at work, at Tom Thumb, on the roads, at the Bridge & Austin Street Shelter, at Vines.   In fact, we can be epiphanies for others.

    Your last epiphany?

  • Sunday Homily, New Year’s Day, 1-1-12

Readings Numbers 6, 22-27, The Lord Bless You and Keep You; Psalm 67, May God bless us in his new mercy; Galatians 4, 4-7, So you are no longer a slave; Luke, 2, 16-21, The Shepherds went in haste to Bethlehem.

    The book of Numbers:

            1.  What: the 4th book of the first 5 books of the Bible, the Pentateuch or Torah.

            2.  Date of composition: around 5 centuries before Christ, but was a compilation of years.

    Beginning 1-1-12

            3.  Theme: The people are "numbered" or counted at Mt. Sinai and preparations are made for resuming their march through the desert.  The Israelites begin the journey, but immediately they "murmur" & complain at the hardships along the way. They arrive at the borders of Canaan and send spies into the land, but on hearing the spies' report the Israelites refuse to take possession of Canaan and God condemns them to death in the wilderness until a new generation can grow up and carry out the task. The book ends with the new generation of Israelites in the plain of Moab ready for the crossing of the Jordan River.

            4.  Our selection: God tells Moses to have Aaron & his sons bless the people using this special blessing.

What Kind of a Shepherd am I?

Two weeks ago I had the opportunity to help serve the evening meal at The Bridge in downtown Dallas.  The Bridge is a marvelous facility.  Basically it is the homeless shelter for the greater Dallas area.

It has space for approximately 250 overnighters.  That was the number of people whom we served dinner for the Friday night I was there.  For breakfast & lunch up to 800 people are served.

    Bethany 1-1-12

        Three things struck me.

First, the spirit of the people I was serving.  There are about twenty round tables with, say, 8 places.  I was serving water along with about 6 other guys.  These people were bundled up because it was cold outside.  Everyone I served was super grateful.  I joked and played with lots of the people, men & women.  They had an amazingly up-beat spirit.

    Jon 1-1-12

Secondly, I was struck by three folks, two women & one guy.  They presented themselves as more middle class.  They had a more refined way of speaking, they seemed peaceful.  Except the guy.  He was nice looking with black hair & slender.  But he was more to himself.  He was younger than the two women, probably in his 30’s while the women were maybe in their late 50’s or early 60’s.  They were not together, but at different tables.  The women were talking with people at their tables, but the guy was not.

What is their story?  What events brought them to The Bridge?

The three are still vivid in my memory.

The third thing that struck me was how I got to The Bridge that Friday night.  I got there because the 16 year old girl who lives next door to Rosemary & me invited me.

    Communion Helpers 1-1-12

I knew Sydney volunteered at The Bridge and I told her I would go as her adult whenever her dad or mom could not accompany her.  She invited me.

This was the last day of school before the Christmas break and I am sure lots of kids were out having fun.  Sydney might have done so later, but from 6:00 to 7:00 that night she spent time helping the homeless.  She was like one of those shepherds in Luke story.

What kind of a shepherd are you?

    Rosemary's Blessing

"A new year is unfolding—like a blossom with petals curled tightly concealing the beauty within.

Lord, let this year be filled with the things that are truly good—with the comfort of warmth in our relationships, with the strength to help those who need our hel, and the humility and openness to accept help from others.

As we make our resolutions for the year ahead, let us go forward with great hope that all things can be possible—with Your help and guidance."

  • Christmas Eve Homily, 12-24-11

Readings: Isaiah 9, 1-6, The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; Psalm 96, Today is born our Savior, Christ the Lord; Titus, 1, 11-14, The Grace of God has appeared; Luke 2, 1-14, In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the whole world should be enrolled.  Terrific Readings!

    Isaiah, a quick review.

This beautiful passage is just one of many reasons why I love the Work of Isaiah.

Yes, this is Isaiah I, who composed before the Babylonian Captivity around 600 before Christ.  In fact, he wrote even before Assyria destroyed the northern kingdom of Israel, around 750 before Christ.  He saw it coming.

    Incarnations

Folks, it happened two weeks ago, that beautiful Saturday, December 10.  Rosemary & I were volunteers at a picnic in Flower Mound for underprivileged kids.  We were specifically employed at crowd control in front of a photo shop in a large pavilion where all kinds of things were going on, lunches, dances on a stage, face paintings, and so on.  Horses for riding were outside.

Then there were tons of kids, about 3000 according to one count.  60 school buses, 850 volunteers, and 4500 hot dogs which were totally gone in a nano-second.  We had about 35 members of our own little community.

A whole bunch of events touched me, but three stand out.

    Nativity A 12-24-11

The first person who touched me was Joey, a cute little black girl about 6 years old.  I chatted up everyone in the line, but seemed to spend more time with Joey, which is how I came to know her name.  She just told me.

At one point in our conversations she handed me a small trinket she had glued onto her blouse.  She said, “That’s yours.  I made it.”  I was so touched.  Then she got her picture taken and was gone, happy as could be.

    Nativity B 12-24-11

Another time I was watching a black woman chaperon or bus driver.  She was rounding up her kids and had them all sitting on the cement floor just beyond my line for the photo shop.  When I talked with her she was up to 45 in counting her kids and had more to go.   Her care for all those kids knocked me over.

Then there was a little black girl who was afraid.  She, too, was about 6 and was with about five other girls a bit older and an adult lady.  In the line ahead of her was a black man who was totally dressed as a clown, face painted white, and everything.

    Nativity C 12-24-11

I’m standing next to her and she whispers to me, “I’m scared of him.”  I was touched that she told me.  So we talked.  Eventually I moved into her sight line so she could not see him, because it was like she was obsessing about the guy.

She told the others and they scoffed at her.  However, I was able to let her know that fear was okay and that here she was safe.  I would not let the clown hurt her.  That seemed to calm her; she got her picture, and went happily on her way.

These were incarnation events for me, the spirit of God right there in this crowd of kids on a picnic.  I suggest that these sightings take place daily, in people like the ones I mention, in people who make up my daily life, and in events, to say nothing about nature.

What was your last incarnation event?
